Madre Juana, the sixteenth century Spanish nun who resonates with trans and intersex experiences today
Tumblr media
Today, May 3, is the feast day of Madre Juana de la Cruz, one of my favorite holy transcestors. I'm flattered that my art piece above was included in this year's sharing of QSpirit's article on Juana; I highly recommend that article for aaaall the details about Juana!
I've also written an article that hones in on Juana's genderfluid visions of God, and other ways the life and preaching of this sixteenth century Spanish nun resonates with trans and intersex experiences today. Learn about Juana's adam's apple and sex-shifting clothing choices, God's pregnancy cravings and seamstress skills, and other fun stuff!

Love opened a mortal wound. In agony, I worked the blade to make it deeper. Please, I begged, let death come quick.

Juana Inés de la Cruz calling Maria Luisa “Phyllis” and “Lysis” throughout her poems is so fucking extra.
Phyllis is a woman from Ancient Greek mythology who killed herself because she thought her lover wouldn’t return to her. A tree grows where she is buried, to blossom when her lover does return.
Lysis comes from Plato’s dialogue of the same name. Hippothales is in deep, unrequited gay love with Lysis. And Socrates/Plato basically tells him off for being a simp. And so Juana Inés pointed at Hippothales and was like: “lol me”
From this, we may conclude that lesbians have always been real fucking extra.
