English for Specific Purposes:  Observation Report 1

On April 24th, I observed an EAP class at the Law School. It was a reading-only course. The group was made up of twenty-two college learners. The lesson was divided into three parts. The first one consisted of practice on conjunctions. The second part involved presentation and practice on the –ing forms. The third part consisted of a reading comprehension activity.

The entire lesson was conducted in L1. The teacher began the lesson by writing an outline of the topics that they would deal with on the blackboard (“conectores (corrección)”, “grammar (-ING)”, “guía 6 (lectura)”). She referred to the lesson plan and checked homework on conjunctions. Students were expected to provide the logico-semantic relation between ideas signaled by the connector (“and”, “although”), mention the ideas related and give a meaningful translation. While she was checking, the practitioner provided pieces of linguistic advice on translation and reading comprehension. Then, the teacher presented the –ing forms through a written text about types of crimes. Learners read the text and tried to get the meanings and uses of the –ing forms. The teacher gave some tips related to reading comprehension strategies, such as paying attention to the title and the structure of the text, so as to get the global idea of the text and not to get lost in unknown words. While correcting the task, the teacher introduced some vocabulary items that were new to the students and monitored. To introduce new vocabulary items, she asked them the meaning of the terms and also the word class the item belongs to.

In the last part, students were supposed to read a text and answer general comprehension questions on the civil law and the common law. The teacher carried out pre-reading activities, such as asking them to infer meanings and contents from the heading and sub-headings; while-reading activities, such as focusing on general and specific information, and as post-reading activities, the teacher asked them to draw a timeline for homework.

Regarding the rationale of the lesson, at all points in the lesson, the teacher tried to make learners aware of significance of what they were learning and practicing. The practitioner encouraged students to reflect upon the structures and vocabulary items in L1 and L2—when they had to translate—and to keep in mind the goal of the course, which is that they acquire the basic skills and strategies to understand and interpret text related to the legal field. She also tried to put emphasis on the functions of a grammatical item. In general, legal documents have high lexical density and a complex syntax, so they tend to be complex to read and interpret. Apart from knowing the contents, developing the capacity to deal with the complexity and even translate those texts requires a minimum understanding of grammar. Lawyers and lawyers-to-be may encounter texts belonging to different law-related genres, which can be more field-specific, such as sentences, verdicts, certificates, lawsuits, among others, and even newspaper or magazine articles, papers, and all sort of documents and texts that are related to the practice of law for personal or collective use. Being familiar with the different genres and registers—including specific terminology and grammatical structures—helps lawyers and lawyers-to-be understand and interpret texts in L2 globally or specifically. In fact, the teacher reminded learners of the different reading approaches when she gave instructions.  

The learning process in this EAP course is a conscious one. Learners know why they want and need to learn to read and interpret text in L2, but the teacher also makes sure that they know why learning certain skills and strategies can help them achieve the general goal. For example, once they finished checking homework, the teacher explained that what they had been doing was a mock test and asked them about their perceptions. She also asked them: “¿Para qué creen que vemos esto (-ing forms)?”, so that learners could reflect upon the purposes of the tasks and grammatical items.

One of the issues that called my attention was how the teacher managed the fact that she is not an expert in legal issues. Instead of assuming that she had all the answers with respect to, for example, legal terminology, she encouraged learners to try to relate what they know in their L2 with their linguistic and content schemata in L1. For instance, she discussed with learners the equivalents of “civil law” and “common law” and asked them how they used them in L1. The teacher learnt about the topic and new terminology while learners participated with their reflections and background knowledge. The teacher provided support for vocabulary recognition and grammar, and was willing to answer questions, discuss meanings and guide students in their learning of both reading and basic translation skills and strategies. Some students were willing to participate actively, but others seemed uninterested or did not want to participate. This last point is confusing considering that the course is not compulsory. Taking into account that the level was elementary, another issue that I noticed was the use of some grammar-related metalanguage, such as “preposición”, “complemento de régimen”, “oración subordinada”, “oración principal”, and “modificador”. Though learners are not linguists, I think that some metalanguage is helpful for both the teacher and students so as to focus on different items in an explicit way, and it can also help them identify grammatical structures and understand how syntax works in L1 and L2 from a linguistic point of view. This understanding will eventually help learners interpret texts.
