Old-school Moon Knight: phase one
Moon Knight makes his first appearance in Werewolf by Night #32 (1975) as an antagonist-who-turns-ally to the titular character.
Point of note: Werewolf by Night’s name is Jack Russell, because Stan fucking Lee.
Mercenary Marc Spector agrees to catch a werewolf for a bunch of businessmen in exchange for ten grand.
In a perfectly normal move for what’s basically a rotary club, they dress their new hire up in a silver superhero costume and tell him to go by Moon Knight.
Marc Spector:
Tumblr media
Their evil plan is actually to keep Jack Russell captive and “release [the werewolf] at periodic intervals, in the hopes that he will commit various murders for our own private purposes.”
Just in case you’re sitting there like ‘That sounds like a dumb plan,’ I am here to remind you that ten grand in 1975 money is almost $54,000 in 2022 money.
You can buy so much actual murder with that kind of money!  From guys who can probably read a map and talk and remember whether or not they did the murders, even!  You’re almost a year out before you break even on the werewolf-hitman scheme, and that’s assuming a) the werewolf reliably kills the people you want dead and b) Spector returns his silver ($24 per ounce in 2022 money) suit.
Which Spector does not, bee tee dubs.
In a perfectly ‘70s Comics move, he just... doesn’t take the costume off when the job is done.  He doesn’t even decide to keep it after he has a change of heart and helps the werewolf break free and put an end to the murder-scheme.  He just sits around in full cosplay mode for a day because the guys who hire him won’t pay up until Jack turns into a werewolf again and everybody’s sure the job’s done.  Murder Rotary is just like “Okay you seem to have gotten real attached to the outfit and lbr, none of us are capable of taking it off you, so you can just call it a bonus.”
I mean, I’m not going to lie, comics costumes have some incredibly stupid origin stories. “An evil conspiracy of homicidal entrepreneurs asked me to dress up in this, and then I liked it so much I kept wearing it even after I kicked their asses for justice” is almost refreshingly straightforward.
About a year afterward, we get two Moon Knight-only issues in a character-grabbag title (Marvel Spotlights #28 & 29) and a series of prominent guest appearances in other titles, like the Defenders arc where Nick Fury’s beer-loving supervillain brother builds himself a robot Nick Fury, which leads to the real Nick Fury and the robot Nick Fury going :| at each other in shared grief after the supervillain brother’s death.
As the character gets more fleshed out, we find that mercenary Marc Spector previously made a lot of money doing *clears throat* Extremely Probable War Crimes, which as always puts a little bit of a crimp in how fun it is to spend a lot of money, so he has a secret identity: Stephen Grant, millionaire.  Also he has some superpowers as a result of Jack Russell biting him.  He is definitely not a werewolf, possibly because Jack Russell’s lycanthropy is the result of a familial curse, Because Comics, but Spector’s powers do get stronger or weaker by phase of the moon, Because Comics.
Marc Spector’s other secret identity is cabbie Jake Lockley, which he uses to gather intel on crime.  If this seems like a really time-intensive way of gathering intel on crime, it would be, but he primarily gathers intel on crime by asking people really blunt questions about crime while they go “What are you, a fucking cop?” and also by being the only cab driver in Manhattan willing to pick up a superhero fare at midnight in a shit part of town.
Like, you know that stupid thing where Superman shows up and everyone’s like “Now where’s Clark Kent, he’d just be tickled pink to meet you!”?
Only Moon Knight’s like “Don’t mind me, I’ll just walk home from here” and then five minutes later along comes a cab moseying through the mixed-use organized crime/industrial district at three AM right past the intersection where The Thing just got finished punching someone through the sidewalk for supercriming in an unbelievable stroke of luck.
The Thing’s like “Wow it sure is a shame Moon Knight decided to hoof it when this incredibly convenient cab showed up right after he left, but I guess them’s the breaks.”
Moon Knight’s like “Ha ha, yeah, it’s cool you don’t have your wallet, I’ll just bill the Fantastic Four.  So, have you heard anything about any weird crimes or supervillains lately?”
There are some jokes to the effect of Marc taking his alter egos a little too seriously and having to swap identities rapidly as situations call for one persona or another in quick succession, but no indication that they’re actually separate personalities.
Incidentally, throughout all of this, Marc’s butler and girlfriend/personal assistant are fully aware of his shenanigans and wish he’d cool it.  Marc’s friend/helicopter pilot is fully aware of his shenanigans and thinks they’re pretty dope.

They also collaborated on How The West Was Won (1962), Firecreek (1968), and The Cheyenne Social Club (1970). The were frequently seen on TV awards shows and tributes.
Lucille Ball and Jimmy Stewart never appeared together in a dramatic context. They often were guests on the same awards shows, tributes, and talk shows. The first was “Hedda Hopper's Hollywood” (1960) and the last was Lucille Ball's final public appearance on “The 61st Annual Academy Awards” (1989).
Fonda, Ball, and Stewart, were all neighbors in Beverly Hills. Lucy talks about his vegetable garden, a subject she has mentioned on other programs. Lucy jokes about what a respectful neighbor he is. She also ribs Stewart about his somewhat prudish reputation.
Tumblr media
Lucy: “Next to Jimmy Stewart, Fred MacMurray is electrifying!”

TRIVIA
The American Film Institue (AFI) is an organization that educates filmmakers and honors the heritage of the motion picture arts in the United States. It was founded in 1965 by a mandate from President Lyndon Johnson. Their annual life achievement award began in 1973 and was awarded to John Ford. The ceremony that honored Henry Fonda was the first and only one not to have a host / presenter.
Tumblr media
Henry Fonda: “I dated Lucy once. I guess you could say I didn't really plight my troth. I cry myself asleep a lot because if I had plighted by troth properly, they might've changed the name of that studio to Henrylu.”
Lucy's daughter, Lucie Arnaz, and her husband, Gary Morton, sit next to her in the audience.
Film clips from two out of three film collaborations with Lucille Ball, The Big Street (1943) and Yours, Mine and Ours (1960), are included.
Tumblr media
“General Electric's All-Star Anniversary” (September 29, 1978)

Synopsis: John Wayne hosts this 90-minute ABC variety show. He gives a capsulized running history of the past 100 years between musical numbers, vignettes, and vintage film clips. Leslie Uggams and the group Sha-Na-Na perform musical numbers and Albert Brooks does a routine about holding auditions to find a new national anthem.
TRIVIA
Tumblr media
Although video of this special is scarce, photographs show Lucille Ball interacting with host John Wayne and performing a fast-paced dance number. There are no photos or other records of Henry Fonda's role in the celebration.
John Wayne also hosted a similar patriotic variety show, “Swing Out, Sweet Land,” in 1971. Lucille Ball did a serious monologue as the internal voice of the Statue of Liberty. Bob Hope and Leslie Uggams were also involved in both shows. Mark Twain was a character in both.
Tumblr media
This special was ostensibly to mark the General Electric Corporation's (GE) 100th Anniversary, which came as a surprise to many as it had just celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1970!  Although the company was formed in 1895 by the merger of several smaller companies, GE eventually decided that its Anniversary should be marked by the day Thomas Edison himself formed the company in 1878. This change was primarily for advertising purposes – and this special was one of those marketing strategies.
From 1953 to 1962, GE sponsored the anthology series “General Electric Theatre” which, like “I Love Lucy,” was aired on CBS. It was hosted by future US President Ronald Reagan. Henry Fonda played clown Emmett Kelly in “The Clown” aired on March 27, 1955.
In 1952, Lucille Ball was featured in a print ad campaign to promote GE Ultra-Vision television sets.
Tumblr media
“America Alive!” (November 9, 1978)
“America Alive!” was a short-lived hour-long NBC daytime show which featured consumer tips, relationship advice, entertainment news and reviews, and comedy, from its home studio in New York City as well as remotes from Los Angeles.
Cast: Jack Linkletter (Host), Lucille Ball and Gary Morton (Co-Hosts), Henry Fonda (Guest)
TRIVIA
Tumblr media
While Lucy and Gary were in a California studio, Lucy was supposed to interview Henry Fonda, who was in their studio in New York. The following day, host Jack Linkletter infers that it wasn't strictly an interview. Linkletter doesn't specify what happened and there are no video records of the interview.
The following day, Lucy spent the entire hour taking questions from an audience of students at UCLA.
“The 36th Annual Golden Globe Awards” (January 27, 1979)
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Henry Fonda was in attendance to support his daughter, Jane Fonda, who won for Coming Home and received the Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite. Fonda was also a presenter.
SPEAKING OF HENRY....
Tumblr media
In 1971's “Lucy & Carol Burnett: The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (HL S3;E22) the ensemble sings “Hooray for Hollywood” with specially-written lyrics that mention Henry Fonda and his children Jane and Peter.
Tumblr media
In 1973's “Lucy and Joan Rivers Do Jury Duty” (HL S6;E9), Lucy and Joan are on a deadlocked jury they compare to the film Twelve Angry Men (1957) starring Henry Fonda as the holdout juror.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Moves to NBC” (February 8, 1980) kicks off with a tour bus driving through Beverly Hills and the tour guide's voice announcing the homes they are driving past, including the Henry Fonda’s. When the bus reaches Lucille Ball's Roxbury Drive mansion, Lucy gets out of the bus – having hitched a ride from after her downtown shopping trip. In real life, the Arnaz family actually did live in the same neighborhood as Henry and Shirlee Fonda as well as James and Gloria Stewart and Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone.
Henry Fonda died in 1982.
Shirlee Fonda: "She [Lucy] was always calling or coming over to see him when he was ill. And after he died, she was one of the ones who always included me in social gathering. When I gave that first party after Henry's death, I said, 'Lucy, you have to be there and help me get though this.' And she was there for me, for 100%"
Lucille Ball died in 1989.

2017 Round-Up (Part two)
As with yesterday’s list, here’s more movies I saw last year, but otherwise didn’t post a review of On here for one reason or another.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2.
As with the first entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series, Volume 2 follows our swashbuckling group of space pirates-turned-unlikely-heroes as they attempt to not kill one-another and save the galaxy from one threat or another. This time, Kurt Russel’s Ego The Living Planet (Peter Quill/Star Lord’s otherwise absent father) decides its time for some good old-fashioned bonding/intergalactic destruction with his newly-found son. So, yeah, apparently Star Lord has some serious cosmic powers that allow him to damn near do whatever he wishes (and Kurt Russel can turn into David Hasselhoff and is nearly immortal due to him being a motherfucking planet with a humanoid avatar) The gang saves the day, and its hinted that every one of Stan Lee’s Cameos may actually be one and the same cosmic being just doing what he wants to do. Micheal Rooker’s Yondu gets a heartfelt side-story and Sylvester Stallone is there for some reason. This is one that is definitely better on the big screen than it is on the small screen. 7.8/10
It (2017)
An adaptation of the widely-regarded Stephen King horror novel of the same name, It tells the story of seven youths that have to drive an evil entity (Pennywise, the dancing clown, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård) out of their town before It kills them as horrifically as it does Stuttering Bill’s little brother in the film’s opening moments. Unlike the novel (which takes place in 1958) the movie takes place in the much more familiar 1980′s. The movie really covers the majority of the flashback part of the book, leaving the Losers Club’s second go after the unspeakable horror for another day. Bill Skarsgård really nails it as Pennywise, and it never seems like he’s trying to outdo or emulate Tim Curry’s portrayal of the demonic clown from the 1990 miniseries. The kids themselves do a great job in their respective roles and I was really surprised at Finn Wolfhard‘s performance as Richie “the mouth” Tozier (formerly portrayed by a Pre-Robot Chicken Seth Green) I’d only previously seen him in the Netflix original Series “Stranger Things”. It’s a fun, albeit frightening ride (this coming from someone that grew up on Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees) 7/10
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
It’s hard to find a movie that really shouldn’t exist, but this one does and we’re all the better for it. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is based on the Dav Pilkey novel series of the same name, with elements from the first four novels tying the story together for the theatrical runtime of just under an hour and a half (huh). The film doesn’t hesitate to modernize the now-twenty-year-old source material and the movie is all the better for it. Something I really loved was the theme by “Weird” Al Yankovic... the last time that happened was for the 1996 Leslie Nielsen comedy “Spy Hard”. Tra-la-laaaa! Captain Underpants gets an 8/10
Justice League
The much-hyped team-up of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash (No word on whether or not Warner will waste a cool few hundred mill to bring Green Lantern to life again), Justice League brings our heroes together to... fight off one of Darkseid’s baddies... I guess? The story is really hard to follow at times. Because it shoehorns two backstories (Cyborg and Aquaman... and Aquaman’s isn’t done well) into the overall story, it isn’t easy to follow. It’s basically Justice League: War, but without Green Lantern and Shazam but with Aquaman. It’s a mess and I can’t say I really want to see it again. The best things I can say about it are that Gal Gadot continues to stun as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince and that Jason Momoa is hot as Arthur Curry/Aquaman. 6/10

This encyclopedic comics history of the formative years of hip hop captures the vivid personalities and magnetic performances of old-school pioneers and early stars like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, plus the charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons; Debbie Harry, Keith Haring and other luminaries make cameos.
The lore of the early days of hip hop has become the stuff of myth, so what better way to document this fascinating, epic true story than in another great American mythological medium ― the comic book? From exciting young talent and self-proclaimed hip hop nerd Ed Piskor, acclaimed for his hacker graphic novel Wizzywig, comes this explosively entertaining, encyclopedic history of the formative years of the music genre that changed global culture. Originally serialized on the hugely popular website Boing Boing, The Hip Hop Family Tree is now collected in a single volume cleverly presented and packaged in a style mimicking the Marvel comics of the same era. Piskor’s exuberant yet controlled cartooning takes you from the parks and rec rooms of the South Bronx to the night clubs, recording studios, and radio stations where the scene started to boom, capturing the flavor of late-1970s New York City in panels bursting with obsessively authentic detail.
With a painstaking, vigorous and engaging Ken Burns meets- Stan Lee approach, the battles and rivalries, the technical innovations, the triumphs and failures are all thoroughly researched and lovingly depicted.  plus the charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons, Sylvia Robinson and then-punker Rick Rubin. Piskor also traces graffiti master Fab 5 Freddy’s rise in the art world, and Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, The Clash, and other luminaries make cameos as the music and culture begin to penetrate downtown Manhattan and the mainstream at large.
Like the acclaimed hip hop documentaries Style Wars and Scratch, The Hip Hop Family Tree is an exciting and essential cultural chronicle and a must for hip hop fans, pop-culture addicts, and anyone who wants to know how it went down back in the day. Full color

The next league match is not until 22 April as the Champion of Champions tournament starts today 15 April.  We wish all of our entrants the very best of luck in all disciplines for this annual event. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information.

SOUTH ALICANTE SPITFIRE DIVISION (A) 2017 WK 10
LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Didn’t start the week off too well as La Marina TS lost to Quesada DS five nil. Dave Hadaway and Dave Taylor lost to Derek Sale and Terry Morgan and also losing were Peter Parsons and Tom Spencer.  Still another two games to play.
The last VCL game promised to be a cracker …and it was.  La Marina needed ten points to stay up and Vistabella Saxons wanted five points.  It was close throughout with the Singles finishing first as usual.  This week it was Jan Parsons being the Star winning 21- 7 while Pete lost by a similar score.  The Pairs was a close fought game all the way through with Margaret Finlayson and Tom Spencer winning all the way until the 17th end when they dropped a four only to pick up a three on the last end to get a draw.
The Triples was a little easier but a good game to play in as our opponents clawed their way back picking up six shots on the last six ends.  Thankfully, Barry and Wendy Latham and Carol Smith held on to win by three. The two Rinks each had great games.  Barry Sadler, Dave Taylor, Roger Stacey and Dave O’Sullivan also dropped a four on the 17th end but got the necessary two on the last to secure a win by one shot.
Our other rink again went very close everything coming down to the last wood on the last end.  Unfortunately on this occasion it went to the Visitors.  Counting it all up La Marina 90 shots and Vistabella 88 making the overall score 9 points to 5 in favour of La Marina.  Can’t ask for any more than that.  Well done to all who played in a great game for the last game of the season in the VCL.

We will have 1 in Div A, 1 in Div B and 2 in Div C and it is as much the latter where we welcome players – either those who have played in the leagues and want to continue, or those who are now ready to test the water and get involved and above all enjoy the game.

As there has been so much speculation and discussion about SAN LUIS BOWLS GREEN hopefully this will explain the current situation:
“When Vic announced that we were to have the base done, a new underlay and a new carpet, as discussed and quoted for by the Greengauge representative, we all had high expectations of a great playing surface to be the “flagship” for them, of what they could provide.
Unfortunately, this has not been the case as the base has shown to be “not suitable for purpose”. The Company, commissioned by the Greengauge representative, after much discussion via Julian Pering agreed to try and rectify the matter f.o.c.
In order to do so the carpet and underlay had to be unstitched and lifted and then when the base was done relaid, and restitched – AT A COST – through no fault of Vic’s. Greengauge were not prepared to give in anyway at all saying the base was not within their remit, although their representative had been involved with “providing” the company.
Vic has decided NOT to have any more work done on the green FOR THE TIME BEING. We have a good carpet and underlay but unfortunately the expectations of a great playing surface has not been met. BUT it is still perfectly playable and no worse than certain rinks at other clubs.
So, let’s just get on with bowling and enjoying our matches and each other’s company and show what a great club we are.”

La Marina Report by Barry Latham
Last week we beat the VCL League Leaders and this week we upset the number two by beating San Miguel at our place 10-4.  The togetherness continued for the Parsons, both Janet and Peter played the Singles and won 21-17 each.  Isn’t it lovely? Captain Colin Armitage, Martin Butler and Lynne Armitage had a tight game but came out the winners 14-12. Last (Well, off the green.) but not least the rink of Barry Latham, Wendy Latham, Mike Smith and Barbara Forshaw had a good win by 18 to 13.  The overall shot difference was very close, we got it by one.  We might still be last in the league but we are at the moment upsetting the leaders.  May it continue!!!!    When I arrived to watch the Pilots I was told as we walked to the ground we were down on very rink bar one.  Obviously it must have been our cheering and ribald comments that spurred the Pilots to eventually chop down the Greenland Gladiators.  Good to see a lot of our friends from our old club but even better to beat them 10-4.  Close all the way though but gradually La Marina took over.  Mike Smith, Peter Bailey and Jean Tregoing plus Terry and Jean Perchard and Reg Jackson both pulled off creditable draws.  Dave Taylor, Tom Spencer and Mo Taylor had a good win by four shots.  And the Hadaways are back ……. to form both winning.  Dave, Arthur Cronk and Dave O’Sullivan won 20-15 and Shirley, Steve Hindle and Carol Smith won 25-15.  Two cracking results this week so well done Captains and Selectors who get a lot of stick at times.
Don’t forget if you want to join our happy little Club you can phone our Captain Steve Hindle on 966184360.  Don’t worry if you have never played before we can lend you all the kit you need plus some coaching.
