Afropunk BLKTOPIA at Lena Horne Bandshell at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!

On Friday, August 23, 2024, Afropunk returned to Brooklyn for a two day event called Afropunk BLKTOPIA at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park as a part of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. The first day featured wrestling, a Battle of the Bands, a Ballroom Battle, plus live performances by Brazil’s Larissa Luz, and Erykah Badu, who graced the same stage two years ago. Badu is headlining both nights with each set being different; the first night had a hip-hop & funk feel to it.

BRIC Presents Digable Planets as Headliners for Hip-Hop 50th Anniversary Celebration

Digable Planets is headlining BRIC's Hip-Hop 50th Anniversary celebration this summer. The bohemian rap legends are currently on tour observing the 30th birthday of their Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) debut album. Southern rapper Kari Faux who just saw her debut REAL BITCHES DON'T DIE, will open for Digable Planets. The show is on August 11th at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Fans can RSVP now.

The 2022 BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Juneteenth UNITYFEST concert, co-presented by the Robert Randolph Foundation (@therrfound) was held in Brooklyn, NY. A national multi-cultural experience united diverse voices and communities, in commemoration and celebration of Juneteenth and Black culture, featured performances from multi-award winning gospel artist, Tye Tribbett (@tyetribbett), legendary vocalist, Deborah Cox (@deborahcox), Grammy-award winning gospel singer, Israel Houghton (@israelhougton), inspirational R&B singer, Mali Music (@malimusic), and six-time Grammy-nominated steel pedal-guitarist,Robert Randolph (@robertrandolph). The event was hosted by actor and comedian Barry Brewer (@barrybrewerjr) and made possible by a phenomenal list of sponsors and partners, including Heal America, Levitt Foundation, and LiveOne as the official streaming partner.

Glass Animals provided relief to an audience that endured and survived toxic times since the band last appeared in Brooklyn. Maybe this helps explain why the band's local popularity zoomed in recent months. Music fans seek a good-time party band to uplift downtrodden spirits, and Glass Animals provided the right medicine at the right time.

On Saturday, August 17, 2024, this year’s edition of Curlfest took place at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park during BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!’s annual summer concert series.

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, Fishbone (of Los Angeles) and Son Rompe Pera (of Mexico City) performed sets at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park. This was the first time in the season’s 46-year-history that punk bands were booked to play the bandshell.

Ana Tijoux and Ambar Lucid at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! at Lena Horne Bandshell

On Friday, June 21, 2024, the 46th season of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! continued with a free show from Chilean artist Ana Tijoux and Ambar Lucid, who resides in New Jersey. This was Tijoux’s third time performing at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, with the series’ Executive Director, Saidah Blount, calling her family when introducing the headliner to the stage.

Juneteenth UNITYFEST with DJ Spinna, Crystal Waters, Merlin Bobb, and more at Lena Horne Bandshell

On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! held their Juneteenth UNITYFEST show at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY. The free concert was presented by BRIC and The Robert Randolph Foundation and featured DJ sets by DJ Spinna, Merlin Bobb, and DJ Quinnette, who warmed up the show when doors opened at 5PM. There were live performances by Monique Bingham, Lady Alma, and Crystal Waters as well as readings done by Ryan Jamaal Swain, Jerrie Johnson, and Ianne Fields Stewart.

Michael Brun Presents BAYO at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! at Lena Horne Bandshell

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, Celebrate Brooklyn! held a benefit concert of their 46th season with Michael Brun Presents: BAYO at Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park. The outdoor featured DJ sets from Kolo and Brun himself. There were live performances by Haitian artists along with others from the diaspora such as Paul Beaubrun, Sarina, Anie Alerte, Danola, Pierre Jean, Troubleboy Hitmaker, Oxlade (who came to Brooklyn from Nigeria for the event), AndyBeatz, J Perry, J Balvin, Maxwell, Colmix & Tonymix, Lakou Muzik, and Tabou Combo. Tabou Combo were given a proclamation from New York City to help close the special event.

I captured the event as a house photographer for Celebrate Brooklyn! and some images can be found in the gallery here. I’ll be at the park throughout this season and again later today for Juneteenth UNITYFEST.
