Charles & Max

-- It makes sense that both Max and Charles are good at Bronc/Bull Riding. One of them has always been good at holding on when things get tough and the other has always had problems letting go of things

- At first Charles didn’t mind losing out because the prize money for second place is enough. However, after overhearing a conversation between max and his father about “the wimpy kid in second” he’s made it his life’s mission to not only buy his mama a farm house with a wrap around porch like she always wanted, but to crush his stupid fucking, asshole rival and his beautiful blue eyes into the dust.

- The first thing Charles noticed about Max was how he couldn’t keep still. The second was how intense the eye contact was from across the dirt arena. And how strange it made him feel.

-- Both Charles and Max know how to square dance and swing (living in Texas core) Sometimes to cheer Charles up, Max will make Charles dance with him

- Charles is more broody than Max in this au, I just kind of envision him as a sweet but unapproachable cowboy at the bar

Just Max

- Max’s horse is named Bullseye

- Max talks to his horse and is CONVINCED he can understand him

- Max, despite what you may first think, has a good voice, and enjoys singing working songs to pass the time when he’s alone on the plain

- Max’s favorite ranch hand was Daniel, a high spirited man who left for Iowa to compete in bull riding at a higher level. Having failed at that, and having broken his bones and spirit in the process he returns to the Rising Sun Ranch much more solemn, and often takes the night shift with the herds

- Max had a lonely childhood, either being out with a herd as form of punishment or being pushed to his limits by his father

- While he was alone he invented games to keep himself entertained, often just games for himself but once Charles enters the picture he modifies them to involve two players

Just Charles

- Charles red boots were a gift to him from his father, originally embarrassed to wear them due to them not being a typically cowboy boot color he now would give up his life before giving up his boots, haven taken up mending them himself whenever he can to keep that connection to his father

- Charles ranch is called the Caballo Encabritado Ranch

- Charles’s horse is named Enzo

OK SO I’ll do some quick bullet points

-if ur not from Tx/a rodeo state there’s a little mini event at the rodeo for kids called Mutton Busting (it’s ADORABLE) where basically kids grab onto the sheep wool, the sheep runs, and they see how far the kid can hold on (this is like to bull riding/bronc riding as go carting is to F1)

-SO I think Charles and Max met as children mutton busting but it was probably in passing so it’s one of those 🤨 do I know you 🤨 or maybe not

-Carlos is a nomadic farmhand at the farm Charles works at, he’s always on the move looking for more adventure and better ranches but he’s stuck around this long for Charles (and lando)

-Lando works at a ranch a county over BUT him and Carlos used to be steer roping partners, and he has since found a new… close friend and roping partner in the quiet new farmhand named Oscar

-Max HATES working at his father’s ranch and rodeoing. All he wants to do is sit around in a field with his horse

-coincidentally… Charles also loves to sit around in a field and to ride his horse as far as he can before the sun sets. Often, this leads him to the top of a hilly ledge, looking down at an empty field often occupied by an unidentifiable figure and his horse

-side note… rodeo can be very dangerous… and can cause injuries that need to be tended too 😳

-also side note… just imagine the elation and celebration after a good bull ride only for it to be crushed by your competitor and rival holding onto the bull with better form for just a few seconds longer 🗿

OH MY GOD SOMEONE ACTUALLY ASKED ok ok ok

So. Here’s my vision. Its like Texas circa 1980s (just for the vibes and fashion)

Charles left his family at a young age to become a ranch hand/wrangler to send money back to his family and help support them! As a part of this he gets into rodeo (specifically bull and bronc riding) to earn prize money.

His biggest rival (especially in the bull riding category ) is this asshole Max Verstappen who’s father used to be a champion rider. And OBVIOUSLY Charles hates coming in second to this nepo baby loser when he has a family to feed so there’s that tension there

Ofc we also have the ranches both of them work at with assorted ranch hands and supervisors (I.e a German immigrant named Sebastian has been a long time wrangler at Charles’ ranch)

I have sm more but I don’t want to sit here and write like 4 pages 😭😭
