If you’re new to my work (which you might be because I’m new to Tumblr), I’m a comic artist. Biggest comics I’ve drawn so far are:
The Autumnal, a nearly 200 page horror comic by writer Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water), myself, and colored by Jason Wordie, lettered by Jim Campbell, and published by Vault Comics.
House of Slaughter (Vol 1), a spin-off of critically acclaimed series Something Is Killing The Children, written by James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal, drawn by me, colored by Miquel Muerto, and lettered by Andworld. Published by BOOM! Studios.
I’m currently working on 2 comic series that are coming out monthly, also from Vault and Boom:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightfall Double Feature is a horror double feature, 2 ongoing horror titles in one book each month. 60 pages of comic in each issue. The story I’m doing in that is called Denizen, it’s written by DB Andry and Tim Daniel, colored by Jason Wordie, and lettered by Andworld. Published by Vault Comics.
Specs is a horror comic by writer David Booher (Canto), drawn by me, colored by Roman Stevens, and lettered by Jim Campbell. Published by BOOM! Studios.
Other than that, I’ve contributed to anthologies like Young Men In Love, Bi Visibility Vol 2, and I’ve done covers for almost every publisher.

Nonfiction Thursday: More Juneteenth Picks
Stony the Road by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
The abolition of slavery in the aftermath of the Civil War is a familiar story, as is the civil rights revolution that transformed the nation after World War II. But the century in between remains a mystery: if emancipation sparked "a new birth of freedom" in Lincoln's America, why was it necessary to march in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s America? In this new book, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of our leading chroniclers of the African-American experience, seeks to answer that question in a history that moves from the Reconstruction Era to the "nadir" of the African-American experience under Jim Crow, through to World War I and the Harlem Renaissance.
Through his close reading of the visual culture of this tragic era, Gates reveals the many faces of Jim Crow and how, together, they reinforced a stark color line between white and black Americans. Bringing a lifetime of wisdom to bear as a scholar, filmmaker, and public intellectual, Gates uncovers the roots of structural racism in our own time, while showing how African Americans after slavery combatted it by articulating a vision of a "New Negro" to force the nation to recognize their humanity and unique contributions to America as it hurtled toward the modern age.
The Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward
In light of recent tragedies and widespread protests across the nation, The Progressive magazine republished one of its most famous pieces: James Baldwin’s 1962 “Letter to My Nephew,” which was later published in his landmark book, The Fire Next Time. Addressing his fifteen-year-old namesake on the one hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote: “You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon.”
Award-winning author Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin’s words ring as true as ever today. In response, she has gathered short essays, memoir, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. And she has turned to some of her generation’s most original thinkers and writers to give voice to their concerns.
Shoutin’ in the Fire by Danté Stewart
In 2016, Danté Stewart was a rising leader at the predominantly white evangelical church he and his family were attending in Augusta, Georgia. Like many young church leaders, Stewart was thrilled at the prospect of growing his voice and influence within the community, and he was excited to break barriers as the church’s first Black preacher. But when Donald Trump began his campaign, so began the unearthing. Stewart started overhearing talk in the pews—comments ranging from microaggressions to outright hostility toward Black Americans. As this violence began to reveal itself en masse, Stewart quickly found himself isolated amid a people unraveled; this community of faith became the place where he and his family now found themselves most alone. This set Stewart on a journey—first out of the white church and then into a liberating pursuit of faith—by looking to the wisdom of the saints that have come before, including James H. Cone, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison, and by heeding the paradoxical humility of Jesus himself.
This sharply observed journey is an intimate meditation on coming of age in a time of terror. Stewart reveals the profound faith he discovered even after experiencing the violence of the American church: a faith that loves Blackness; speaks truth to pain and trauma; and pursues a truer, realer kind of love than the kind we’re taught, a love that sets us free.
We Are Each Other’s Harvest by Natalie Baszile
In this impressive anthology, Natalie Baszile brings together essays, poems, photographs, quotes, conversations, and first-person stories to examine black people's connection to the American land from Emancipation to today. In the 1920s, there were over one million black farmers; today there are just 45,000. Baszile explores this crisis, through the farmers' personal experiences. In their own words, middle aged and elderly black farmers explain why they continue to farm despite systemic discrimination and land loss. The "Returning Generation"--young farmers, who are building upon the legacy of their ancestors, talk about the challenges they face as they seek to redress issues of food justice, food sovereignty, and reparations.
These farmers are joined by other influential voices, including noted historians Analena Hope Hassberg and Pete Daniel, and award-winning author Clyde W. Ford, who considers the arrival of Africans to American shores; and James Beard Award-winning writers and Michael Twitty, reflects on black culinary tradition and its African roots. Poetry and inspirational quotes are woven into these diverse narratives, adding richness and texture, as well as stunning four-color photographs from photographers Alison Gootee and Malcom Williams, and Baszile's personal collection.

personal pet enjoyment. just some things from the letters and ad space from mirage 8 i thought were funny. (literally just text. okay. and 2 outside images but just for joke purposes)
first not including the whole thing but just the use of the phrase comics fandom. in 1986. NEAT!
Bade Biker #1: Jim Lawson returns with a "prequel" to the Bade Biker story which appeared in TMNT #7. In this 30-page story, you'll discover the origin of Orson the frog, and see how he met up with the drifter, Bade Biker… and how they together confronted the evil Moto-Man! Art and story by Jim Lawson. Shipping September 15, 1986.
sorry for never having read bade biker but now just thinking the phrase "origin of orson the frog" issss so funny. (asss... mentioned. the version of issue 7 i read didnt have ANY side stories so /shrug)
Grunts #1: In every war, there are the foot-soldiers, those valiant trench-sloggers -- the 'grunts'. Now. Mirage Studios presents an anthology-style comic with stories by various artists and writers, featuring the exploits of these unsung heroes, with a twist all of the characters are anthropomorphics ('funny animals', for the uninitiated)! Thirty- two pages, black and white, hopefully bimonthly. First issue shipping in mid-1987.
literally just. 'funny animals' yeah man. yeah....
...Keep it coming! I love it! I think I've figured out who's who: Raphael's the crazy brawler. Michaelangelo's the warm, sensitive type, Leonardo seems to be the leader (aside from Splinter), and Donatello's the one with the mechanically-inclined mind! Am I right? (Spot-on, pal!--Peter) 'Til Fugitoid transforms into a truck, MAKE MINE MIRAGE!

this is 1986 👍🏻 i say once again why do ppl act like the cartoon invented turtle personality. and being a comedy. that saaaaidd.....
The turtles are best in the city fighting thugs, killers, muggers in the alleys, rooftops, streets and sewers. This space stuff sucks -- Star Wars is dead! After the Cerebus issue, please get back to the basics, strong story and plot, and please start and finish the story in one issue. TMNT seems to work better that way. I'll be glad to see this space opera end. Also it is very violent. - "taking off heads"? Kids read this, you know. "Kick ass"? "Damn" all the time. You guys are an influence. Please consider that.
Despite all of that, I'll wait and see what #9 brings before I drop/continue collecting. Color would help the turtles.
Larry Mindy Chicago, IL
yes im gonna blast a rando from 1986... well e&l did it first (i never know whats weirder sending hate mail. or publishing it in ur comic). again. pre cartoon era here (tho coming soon). take the turtles back to basics. Oh you mean like issue 1 where THEY KILLED SOMEONE?? incredible. wild shit. turtles are making the kids violent the gift that literally never stopped giving. (pretty sure they say worse than 'damn' in these books)
anyway.

[ID from alt: 1. the turtlepedia advisory warning "You're not on Nicktoons anymore!" that says "Some TMNT stuff really isn't for little kids." 2. the next level up advisory "Hey, Kid, you're a long way from Nicktoons" that say "Some TMNT stuff was always meant for grownups. END ID]

Chilling Adventures Presents... Strange Science, cover by Butch Mapa
Just this once, I'll copy Archie's full press release:
With a string of top-selling comics establishing Jinx Holliday as the latest star of the Archie Horror imprint from Archie Comics, supporting character Danni Malloy will be next to take center stage. The duo embarks on a new terrifying adventure in CHILLING ADVENTURES PRESENTS... STRANGE SCIENCE, a one-shot comic book releasing in August.
Writer Magdalene Visaggio (Eternity Girl)—whose run on a modern update of the classic character Li'l Jinx began with the instant sell-out anthology JINX: GRIM FAIRY TALES last fall—teams with artist Butch Mapa (Star Wars) for this latest entry, a turn towards dark sci-fi. In a story about being true to yourself and what matters most to you, STRANGE SCIENCE will also reveal that Danni is transgender.
"I've been wanting to make this happen for a long time, and it's really cool to see it finally come to fruition," Visaggio said. "I never wanted Danni's trans identity to be gimmicky, or for her to feel like she was only created to be trans. So, I'd like to apologize for sneaking her over the line like this! I wanted you to have a chance to fall in love with her for who she is, not what she is. I'm honored I got to make it happen, and I'm grateful to Archie for never, not even once, pushing back on my insistence on making their books a little bit more queer. I hope Danni finds a good home at Archie with supportive writers and artists helping to keep her alive for years to come."
The new one-shot takes its title from the 1989 comic book series DILTON'S STRANGE SCIENCE, which introduced Danni, a science genius who rivaled tech expert Dilton Doiley's prodigious talent. In Visaggio's story, Danni has left that life behind to become an artist and musician, exposing her to criticism from Dilton as the teens try to save themselves from a bizarre time travel accident.
"STRANGE SCIENCE is one of, if not the, most important one-shots we've released to date. It also showcases how versatile horror can be, as it deftly blends sci-fi with horror and tells a beautiful, poignant tale about confronting the past," said Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. "That’s all thanks to writer Magdalene Visaggio, who had the idea to have Danni Malloy tell her own story about her transition. We just needed to figure out the best way to make it fit, and a callback to her character's classic origins mixed with the new horror surroundings she's been re-introduced in just made the most sense."
Mapa added, "Magdalene wrote a story that is vital and poignant and brilliant at the same time, while also being a fantastic piece of horror/sci-fi. Expect lots of weirdness, emotion, action, and character."
Danni's first appearance in the modern Archie Horror universe was THE CURSED LIBRARY, a one-shot released on Free Comic Book Day earlier this month, and she reappears alongside Jinx in their first full-length solo adventure this week in JINX: A CURSED LIFE, both with art by Craig Cermak (Red Team). The sequence subtly establishes linked continuity in Archie Horror for the first time with references to events in other titles, and serves as a starting point for all horror fans looking for a new storytelling universe to explore.
"I think it's clear to anyone reading this that there is a ton of passion and heart in this story, which was demonstrated on every script page," Rotante said. "I'm so proud of this book, but moreover, it's an honor to help bring this beautiful story to life, and I'm consistently awed by the amazing talent I have the opportunity to work with."
STRANGE SCIENCE, with an open-to-order variant cover by Skylar Patridge, colors by Ellie Wright, and lettering by Jack Morelli, releases August 16 in comic shops nationwide and will be available for pre-order in comics shops this Friday.

Genesis Uprising
Discover the new comic from Angry Ape Army and EEP Universe, in collaboration with XRM Media and Zumeta Studios, in an exclusive Smash Pages preview.
Long ago, before the war on Genesis World, a powerful energy called the Aura flowed through the roots and veins of every living thing, a source of magic for the peaceful Genesis Apes. That is until a legion of technologically advanced Nano Apes took the planet by force, drawn to the Aura as a source of fuel for their own dying planet.
Now, the Nano Apes rule and the history of the Genesis Apes, robbed of their homes and their dignity, is snuffed out, living on only in whispered legends. There are tales of magic, and of mighty warriors called Valkyries who fought to protect it and their home with a powerful, wild weapon, even as they were hunted. But those are just bedtime stories told to children. Technology is supreme. Magic is forbidden.
As the Nano Apes tighten their grip and strip-mine the Aura, there’s a stirring in the ranks. Kambris, a low-level grunt, is about to discover there’s something special about him. With his friend Hatch and their reluctant ally, the Valkyrie Amaxa, Kambris embarks on a journey that begins with an accident but will engulf the planet in fiery revolution. Genesis has been beaten long enough; it’s time for an uprising.

DECEMBER 2022 (Part 2)
Part 1
Book of Fuligin
Editor Ramón Perales recently announced the final list of participants for Book of Fuligin, “a sequential anthology” inspired by Gene Wolfe’s science fiction novel Book of the New Sun. It’s quite the list of contributors. I’ve written a sci-fi/horror story for the anthology titled “A Column of Ashes” which H. Berlin is illustrating. In the story, a merchant hires a gardener to bring an old garden back to life, but neither gardener nor garden are quite what they seem. (I’ve yet to master making the story-in-a-sentence enticing, but I promise the story is weird and contains a sating quantity of blood.) The title is taken from a line of dialogue in a play-within-the-novel:
“You are a ghost and less, a column of ashes upheld by the wind.”
Book of Fuligin will be be crowdfunded and published by Strangers Publishing.

After the End
“Lápida” (’tombstone’), written by me, illustrated by Tim Fischer, and lettered by Tim and @andriylukin, is set in a near future where a journalist with a deteriorating memory travels through a post-apocalyptic South America, writing about a world which now revolves around sports. “Lápida” was created for the anthology After the End, “a 350+ page post-apocalyptic comics anthology featuring an exciting group of 23 emerging artists and writers”, successfully funded on Kickstarter a couple of weeks ago. A beautifully designed and eclectic collection of stories. After the End is the first book published by @jakereevesart’s One Shot Books and will be available to buy once backers have received their copies.

Big Hype
The first crowdfunding campaign of the year I was involved in was for Big Hype Vol. 2, a massive anthology published by Doug Wood’s Jumpstart Comics. The anthology includes “Sistrenday” by me and Julian Adkins, a fantasy story in which two sisters steal from a family of deities who transform the older sister into a bird. “Sistrenday” was intended to be a pitch for a longer story in which the younger sister goes on a journey to find a way to reverse her sister’s transformation. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of it, but may revive the project some day. This was also originally in color, so it may reappear elsewhere in color.

Legendary Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola and Acclaimed Artist Ben Stenbeck Unveil an All-New Fictional Universe: Lands Unknown
Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown
is an Anthology of Folklore-inspired Fantasy Stories, Written and Drawn by Mignola,
Colored by Dave Stewart and Lettered by Clem Robins
That  Introduces a Shared Universe of Stand-Alone Stories Created by Mignola and Stenbeck
Thirty years after Mike Mignola created Hellboy, the legendary cartoonist is introducing readers to a brand new shared universe, created with frequent collaborator Ben Stenbeck, the writer/artist of the acclaimed series Our Bones Dust. In December, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, an anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories written and illustrated by Mignola, coloured by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robins. The book will be the first publication from Curious Objects, Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse and will set the stage for more weird, wicked, and whimsical stories in the “Lands Unknown” universe from Mignola and Stenbeck.
In Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the stories are fantastical, odd and charming — from a search for the beating heart of a long-dead sorcerer, to a pirate girl who makes a deal with the devil, to the titular boy who wins a grim prize in a game with undead interlopers.
“It all started with an Italian Folktale about a boy who goes bowling with corpses,” said Mignola. “I fell in love with the story as soon as I discovered it but I wanted to play fast and loose when adapting it, so I created a whole new world. Not TOO different than our world a few centuries ago, but with a lot more gods and monsters. Once I created that world new characters and stories just started pouring out of it. There is a whole lot to play with here and I expect to be at it for a very long time.”
few years now Mike has been emailing me designs and pages and ideas and maps and lists of place names for this world, and his enthusiasm for this project is indomitable and infectious,” said Stenbeck, who will be writing and drawing other, unannounced future Lands Unknown comics. “So often my reaction to these emails is ‘that's great Mike! But I still have two books to draw before I can even move on to this work!’ and then I find myself taking three days off to write a new story. Luckily Mike likes my stories. My first project is set far off in a distant corner of this world. That way I can't bump into anything Mike is doing and make a mess. Spoiler...it will have monsters in it.”
In addition to the Hellboy Universe he created three decades ago, Mignola has co-created the Outerverse Universe with New York Times bestselling novelist Christopher Golden, co-created a series of eerie and off-kilter Victorian-style gothic mysteries with Warwick Johnson-Cadwell, starring Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox, and Ms. Mary Van Sloan, and recently co-created Radio Spaceman with Greg Hinkle and Leonide the Vampire with Rachele Aragno. In addition to his work on the Hellboy and Outerverse universes, Stenbeck’s writer-artist debut Our Bones Dust has generated widespread acclaim.
Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown is a 112-page hardcover that will be released in bookstores on December 3, 2024 and in comic shops on December 4.  Follow Dark Horse Comics on social media for more news, announcements, and updates.

Episode 805: Alex de Campi on FULL TILT BOOGIE
Having just talked about the early days of 2000AD, we thought it would be fun to chat with someone with a strip running in the Progs right now. Starting with Prog 2367 was Book Two of the strip “Full Tilt Boogie”, the continuing adventures of teen bounty hunter Tee, her grandmother, and their cat as they criss-cross the galaxy. Drawn by Eduardo Ocana, colored by Eva de la Cruz, lettered by Annie Parkhouse, and written by today’s guest.
She is a multi-hyphenate creator whose CV would take the entire show to lay out in detail, so with her indulgence I will paraphrase. A writer of prose, comics, poetry, film and television, she is also a director and collaborator and obviously a multi-tasker of the highest order. She has mashed up the Archie gang with the Predator, worked with Duncan Jones, and edited an anthology of soldiers autobiographical stories about their deployments. While not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do all manner of creative jobs herself, her eye for collaboration has led her to working with such talents as Carla Speed McNeil (on No Mercy) and Erica Henderson (on the pulp horror Dracula Motherf**ker and the more recent Parasocial), as well as the aforementioned Ocana even prior to “Full Tilt Boogie”.
Greg tried to keep this episode’s conversation coherent but because today’s guest is Alex de Campi, with so many avenues for questions and straight-shooting answers, it was no mean feat. Find out how he did and more on today’s chat!

Her poet laureate project, “Ekphrasticize That!” focused on ekphrastic writing and art and inspiration from the letters of Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo. Hailey studied English and Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University, where Gary Sange, Gregory Donovan, and David Wojahn helped her hone her poetry. Her writing has been published in The Northern Virginia Review, A Wreath of Golden Laurels: An Anthology of Poetry by 100 Poets Laureate, Written in Arlington, The Poetry Society of Virginia Centennial Anthology, New Departures: Write By The Rails Anthology, and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Focused Inquiry Textbook.
This book is funded in part by FLP’s One Last Word Program. ONE LAST WORD helps to bring the last works of gifted poets to the world.
PRAISE FOR Intrastate Lines by Alexandra “Zan” Delaine Hailey
Intrastate Lines is an open invitation to sink into the beautiful brevity and saturation of Alexandra “Zan” Hailey‘s work. Her voice floats like a ghost between the lines…speaking softly, but carrying great hope. Through the fragility of time and the impermanence of life, Zan unveils the quiet daily moments that are often overlooked but still yearn to be seen. Her poetry will let you taste summer clouds and leave you begging the bumble bee to show discernment, and kindness, when weighing down a petal. The world that she creates through her words is a revolving door that you want to step through again and again.
–Natalie Potell, Poet Laureate, Prince William County, VA, 2018-2220
Each of Zan Hailey‘s poems is a love letter to life: perceptive, spare, melodic. Like various parts of a musical score flirt with each other, some being repeated but in a different key or to a varied tempo, Zan’s poems speak to one another and to the reader. Whether she observes without judgment or describes beauty so it’s somehow even more heartbreakingly beautiful, each poem is both its own song as well as a chorus of travelers celebrating life.
–Kathy Smaltz, Poet Laureate, Prince William County, VA, 2016-2018
As I wander down the roads that lead me to when I was your teacher, Zan, I marvel at your window on our world of beauty. I look up at your blossoming sun, your bulbous clouds, and celebrate my days with you as you began writing your magical poems.
The readers of your lines here will find soothing pleasure in following you as you paint your scenes that are harnessed with rainbow language.
You are the teacher as we reach to find our own quiet scene and react to these lovely ekphrastic and nature poems.
