FROZEN 3 and FROZEN 4 are both in development, and I can't wait!
The news sounded odd to me initially, I didn't expect anything like this from Disney Animation, but it became immediatly appealing the moment I realized the GREAT potential a double feature could have for the franchise, most importantly when Bob Iger specified “Jenn Lee, who created Frozen, the original Frozen, and Frozen 2 is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one but actually two stories.”, which would mean:
More time to enstablish new elements, new characters, time to explore new lore and new places without the risk to rush everything;
Tumblr media
A bigger story that can help flesh out our protagonists in their new roles, their new wants and changes they might face, considering how the F2 ending brought many new possibilities;
Tumblr media
A narrative context where the new crysis (whatever it might be) could be explored even better, also allowing to maintain things in a complex prespective just as the Frozen movies like to do, where the matter of "good and evil" not at the center, and things are first of all deeply personal for the characters
Tumblr media
It seems to me that Jennifer Lee always wanted to delve deeper into things, this is why the Broadway Musical was a perfect opportunity for her and the Lopez to expand the characters and flesh out things in the story, also adding new elements that would've been useful for F2.
And when they worked on Frozen 2, they built it as the "second part" of the story, reconnecting almost all the aspects of the sequel to the 1st movie, and the story was clearly meant to be BIGGER and longer compared to what we ended up having because of numerous issues and rewrites. J. Lee and C. Buck didn't want to introduce something that would feel just as "a new adventure", and more about the actual characters evolving, see what they left unresolved, breaking the "Happy ending" scenario of F1, which also led them to NOT give the new human characters (Mattias and the Northuldra) the same relevance given to Spirits of Nature, in order to remain focused on Elsa, Anna and the rest of the gang.
Tumblr media
Now, Lee will most likely not direct or write these two new movies, but she is still directly involved, because it's both part of her job as CCO of Walt Disney Animation Studio and because Frozen is her (and Chris Buck) baby. It will be curious to discover with what idea Marc Smith came out with, but the fact he worked on the 1st Frozen as a storyboard artist and the became Director of Story for Frozen 2 says a lot about him and why Lee trusts him so much, and I'm sure they will follow the approach used with the 2nd movie and carry it on with 3 and 4. Numerous sagas used the two-parter approach, like the books adaptations of Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games series, or more "original cases" like Pirates of the Carribeans or what we are getting now with the animated Spiderverse movies (Across and Beyond). But I think the best similarity (and probably what led to this ambitious choice) is with Avengers Infinity War/Endgame, where the BIG FINALE gets developed in two movies.

Mattias: I’m gonna be strong for you, man. You know, I really did love Agnarr.
Elsa: He was my dad, Mattias.
Mattias: Yeah, but he loved me more than he loved you. He told me that.
Elsa: Yeah, he told me that too, actually.

There's also the "Post Frozen 1" version: Mattias is Oaken, Honeymaren and Ryder are Duke Weselton, and Yelana is Hans.
Though Mattias, Duke Weselton and Oaken's differences to the other characters are much bigger than you might think which would make the pool a bit uneven lol

Top three contenders for Ella's father.
Tumblr media
King of Maldonia, Lancelot (Wish Realm), and Destin Mattias. In no particular order, I'll give a brief story for each. At the end they'll be a poll and you can vote based on which story you liked the most.
King of Maldonia (fc: Colin Salmon)
Tumblr media
Cecelia, Ella's mother, was married to King of Maldonia for a brief while. Then he suddenly, without any reason, cast Cecelia aside and remarried. Cecelia was pregnant with the King's child, but he refused to legitimize the baby or recognize her as his. The King eventually had two sons, Naveen being one of them, whom would become his heirs.
Lancelot (Wish Realm)
Tumblr media
Sometime in between officiating Wish! Snow's and Wish! Charming's wedding and Wish! Snowing stopping the Evil Queen's curse, Lancelot traveled to The Magical Forest. There he met Cecelia and fathered Ella. While Ella was still a baby, Lancelot enlisted in a war. He saved the life of a cook - who would go on to change the tide of the war and marry Queen Eudora - to the detriment of his own life.
Destin Mattias (fc: Ricco Ross)
Tumblr media
(This is a reimagining of the character Lieutenant Destin Mattias from Frozen II). Destin was the son of a Duke who was also the head of the Royal Army. A Marquis himself, Destin became military leader and the best swordsman in the realm. As a young man he fell in love with Cecelia whom he married. They had Ella together and were very happy. One day, Destin led an investigation into why people were suddenly going missing in a mist shrouded forest. While investigating Destin himself disappeared.

Destin Mattias and Change
Lieutenant Destin Mattias was the newest introduction to the Frozen family and fits right in alongside Queen Anna (and future King Kristoff, don't @ me) in Arendelle as her General.
In my Honeymaren analysis, I mentioned how she acted as a mentor character to Elsa, and guided to towards her true destiny. Destin has this same role, except for Anna instead - even more interesting, however, Anna actually acts as his mentor in return. He and Anna actually mirror each other and follow a very similar development through Frozen 2, revealing to us that Destin is actually a very deep character, even with his short time in the sequel.
Fun fact - Destin means 'destiny' in French, which falls in line with the overall themes in Frozen 2 and his role in the film.
Destin and Anna share a lot of similarities - their unwavering loyalty to those they care about, their love for Arendelle, and their sheer determination to do the right thing, even if it means sacrificing their own well-being.
However, the similarities do not stop there.
When we first meet Destin, he is wary of the Northuldra and the spirits due to what he had witnessed before being locked away in the woods. He was under the impression that the Northuldra attacked them, and somehow caused the death of the King he was loyal to.
Anna starts Frozen 2 with a similar mindset. She witnessed the spirits destroy Arendelle, and Elsa act secretive about the voice. Anna wasn't ready to trust the spirits, and she also wasn't readily willing to put the lives of the people she cared about, and the life she clinged onto, on the line. When Elsa proclaims she will help everyone in the woods, Anna is concerned "That's a pretty big promise, Elsa." then Anna remarks to Honeymaren with a more realistic promise "We'll do all we can."
Later on, Anna and Destin spend a moment together during the camp scene. They talk about a couple things, first about Hamila.
Anna remarks that Halima is still single, but Destin is conflicted about this. This is an interesting scene because it actually showcases something that Anna is trying to avoid. Change. Destin is saddened by the fact that someone he cares about is single, even though it benefits him because if he gets out of the woods, he can try to be with her. He cares more about Halima's happiness than if she is available to him, even though that would mean that something in his life was changed and he can't do anything about it.
Anna has to also face a similar issue. Anna doesn't want her life to change. She wants it to remain the same because she doesn't want to lose her happiness again. However, this comes into conflict when Elsa has a calling that could change the fabric of Anna's world - whether through Elsa leaving her behind or Elsa getting hurt. Thus, Anna is faced with this issue where she wants Elsa to be true to herself and be happy but is also struggling with the idea of Elsa's calling leading her away from Anna - either by choice or by death.
Thus, both Destin and Anna are faced with a similar issue - should they be happy that the person they care about is finding a life outside of them, or should they dread it? The good thing is that Destin gets to have his second chance with Hamila, and Anna can have Elsa in her life even while Elsa chases her calling.
The second thing they talk about is a prelude to The Next Right Thing.
Anna: What else do you miss? Lt. Mattias: My father. He passed long before all this. He was a great man, Built us a good life in Arendelle, But taught me to never take the good for granted. He'd say, "Be prepared! Just when you think you found your way, life will throw you on a new path". Anna: What do you do when it does? Lt. Mattias: Don't give up. Take it one step at a time and... Anna: Just do the next right thing. Lt. Mattias: Yeah, you got it.
Here, we see Destin unknowingly give Anna the best advice that she needs. Anna, as said, is struggling with change. Destin tells her how being prepared for change is important because life will always throw you something unexpected. The voice suddenly calling Elsa created a shift in Anna's life that she was not prepared for, or even wanted to acknowledge.
However, Anna has an inkling that things will change, no matter what she does, and she asks Destin how to deal with it. How does she deal with her life being different without her consent? And thus, he replies to her that she just needs to take everything one step at a time and do the next right thing. And when Anna is faced with the hardest moment of her life, she does just that and more.
We circle straight back to this during the Dam scene. Anna tries to convince Destin to let her destroy the dam. She tells him things that would ultimately change his perception and his very purpose. Destin swore to protect Arendelle and was loyal to his King, only for Anna to shatter the reality that he was living with for 34 years. Was he going to accept it and do the next right thing, or fight it for his own comfort?
Destin chooses to follow his father's advice and do the next right thing, even if it meant going against everything he stood for. Just as he helped Anna emotionally prepare for change, Anna helped him do the same. Thus, toward the end of the film, both Anna and Destin learn to trust the spirits and fight against injustice, even if it meant turning their backs on everything they knew.
Destin Mattias is an interesting and deep character that fully envelopes the themes and messages of Frozen 2, while also helping Anna and mirroring her own development. I hope he continues to play a significant role in the future of the franchise, and hopefully, he'll finally get to sing.

Frozen 2 Rewrite
This is definitely late, but I rewatched Frozen 2 recently and honestly? It’s a lot more disappointing than I remember. I went to watch it in the theater back in 2019 when it first came out and loved it, but I think I was mostly just caught up in the hype.
The movie is very rushed and a lot of the characters were done dirty. And of course, the deleted scenes were better than the final product.
So, I decided to do what I mostly do when I see a movie/show with wasted potential: make a rewrite! This post was also the main inspiration for this
So this is what I think could be changed to make the film a bit more coherent:
* The seasonal spirits rule over the forest alongside the elements, keeping balance within the forest. But when King Runeard killed the seasonal spirits, the elements ran rampant. Because of this, there was no balance, and the forest began to deteriorate.
* Each season works with an element: Winter and Water, Spring and Earth, Summer and Fire, and Autumn and Air. Every time a seasonal spirit passes away, an elemental spirit picks a new seasonal spirit to replace the old one.
* Elsa- Winter Spirit; powers are ice and snow
* Honeymaren- Spring Spirit; powers are plants and storms
* Ryder- Summer spirit; powers are light and heat
* Kristoff- Autumn spirit; powers are harvests and fog
* Anna is the fifth spirit and serves as the neutralizer for the other spirits. She is the physical representation of love and her powers are that of the northern lights
* Kristoff is revealed to be part Northuldra on his father’s side, which is one of the reasons he gets picked to be the Autumn spirit. Another reason is that the previous autumn spirit was the reindeer king, who fought Anna and Elsa’s grandfather in the past, and Kristoff has a connection to reindeers through Sven. He also still tries proposing to Anna, but like that one deleted scene, Anna proposes instead.
* Mattias is the one who saved Agnarr and Iduna and he was taken in by the Northuldra (basically think of the alternate opening of the movie). Throughout the film, he shows his leadership skills and aids the Northuldra in saving their home.
* The Southern Isles hold the map to the Forest, due to King Runeard brokering an alliance with them and even betraying the Northuldra alongside them. And so the group recruits Hans, who has lost his prince title because of his crimes and is now a seafarer. He takes them to the Enchanted Forest on his boat. Hans reveals how his family has mistreated him, and that only his mother and one of his brothers have actually cared for him (this is info from one of the frozen books). His kingdom mocks him and he is frowned upon indefinitely
* Ahtohallan is a place that actually holds the truth to whatever the person desires, rather than just the answers to the past.
* While Anna and Elsa look for the spirits, Kristoff and Hans help with the Northuldra alongside Mattias and Yelana. The Northuldra have actually been trying to get to Ahtohallan to look for answers to save their home, but the water spirit- aka the Nokk- has blocked their path. When Elsa arrives to Ahtohallan, the Nokk creates the tsunami that will flood Arendelle, but the kingdom has not been evacuated. So, Mattias and Hans must race against the clock to help the people of Arendelle, while Kristoff stays behind to help the Northuldra.
* The main villain is the Nokk, who Elsa must pass to get to Ahtohallan. It’s actually revealed that the water spirit was responsible for the death of Anna and Elsa’s parents, stopping them from getting to Ahtohallan to find the truth about Elsa.
* Agnarr and Iduna aren’t portrayed in a fully positive light, as they’re criticized for hiding Elsa’s powers despite Iduna living with elemental and seasonal spirits.
* In the end, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Honeymaren, and Ryder protect the forest alongside the four elements. Arendelle is evacuated and the castle gets destroyed by the flood. The Nokk has been tamed by Elsa, as she proved herself to be worthy of being the Winter Spirit. The characters help rebuild the castle, but Anna and Elsa cannot stay due to their new status as spirits. So, they leave the kingdom under the governance of Mattias, making him the new King of Arendelle.
* At first, Hans believes he’s gonna be sent back to the Southern Isles, but the gang have grown to trust him and refuse to send him back to his awful father and brothers. So, they promote him to Admiral, and he helps Mattias rule over Arendelle
This probably seems like a lot for one movie, but it’s just personal vision. Let me you what you think!

In case anyone wondered, yeah, all the most recognizable Frozen characters are in the final group photo, even Hans that many thought was excluded just because Elsa jokingly froze him in the picture.
So, to all the fellow Hans fans out there: calm yourself, take a deep breath and accept that Hans getting joked about is still a way to take him into account because, at least, the protagonists can express their disdain for him, which is totaly fare.

When the Rain Comes
Very loosely took the day 18 prompt "time of my life" with Elsa and Mattias in the Rowing AU (continuing with the loose plot I've been following this month)
There was a light rain as Elsa began driving to the boathouse that morning, and very little traffic because it was so early. Since she was alone, she sang along at the top of her lungs to the radio.
“I’ve had the time of my life…”
It wasn’t her favorite song by a long shot, but she had heard it enough times that she knew all the words, and it was fun to sing along to.
Some Beatles came on next.
“When the rain comes…”
The rain could only be described as torrential by the time she arrived at the boathouse.  She always had several extra layers of rain gear ready to change into in the trunk of her car, since Coach Mattias was not about to cancel practice if he didn’t have to, and she knew the weather could change quickly.
“Good morning, Elsa,” he called out from his office.
“Good morning,” she called back. “Are we going out today?”
“We’ll try to,” he said.
Just then, they heard a boom of a thunder strike.
“I spoke too soon, didn’t I?” he laughed.
“Let me put away my rain gear and I’ll help set up in the weight room,” Elsa said.
There were never quite as many rowers in the spring as there were in the summer, since all the college students were away at school, so they would all fit inside easily enough.
“How is Eric doing?” she asked as she began setting up stations.
“He’s pretty well. He’s going to be resting another week, then hopefully he’ll be back.”
“I’m glad to hear it.  That was pretty scary.”
“We’re lucky we found him when we did,” he said. “You did a good job stopping the boat and getting everyone back, Elsa.”
“Thanks,” she said.
There was some more thunder as other people began arriving.
“Indoor practice!” Elsa called out.
