a lot of rhaenyra's entitlement (and subtextual transness, in a way) comes from the way she navigates her status as heir not as a woman from the society she lives in but as a man. while her entitlement is in part due to her privilege as the princess of the kingdom, that entitlement comes from total blind eye of viserys towards all of rhaenyra's mistakes on virtue of And the emphasis on rhaenyra being his rightful heir and thus she can do anything she wants. that's the daemon treatment. it's the joffrey baratheon treatment.

viserys has been thinking of rhaenyra as Rhaenyra And Baelon And Aemma at the same time, for the majority of rhaenyra's life. this is why rhaenyra cannot comprehend the suffering alicent went through because of her lack of choices; choices that rhaenyra did have. why rhaenyra could've solved the lordship of driftmark problem with the argument of either baela or rhaena being the daughters of laena, eldest daughter of the lord of driftmark having the right to inherit (just like rhaenyra's own right) without even bringing lucerys into the situation, but she didn't. it didn't even occur to her that alicent might not have wanted to marry viserys, or that she could use herself as a comparative to fight for other women’s right to inherit and reaffirm her own right to the throne that way.

because rhaenyra does consider the male claim to be superior to the female one, and herself to be the exception to this because although rhaenyra knows, logically, theoretically, that she is a woman, she doesn’t perceive herself as such in practice. she wasn't raised as viserys’ daughter, the first female heir, as a signal of sociopolitical change in court and politics, but simply as viserys’ heir. visery’s son, in title and treatment and rights and wrongs, in all but name and gender and because viserys’ opinion was the only one with relevance at the end of the day, she ends up feeling double trapped by the external forces of the patriarchy. she and viserys cannot comprehend why other people refuse ignore all of her mistakes on virtue of her birthright, and instead treat her as a woman when women’s place is clearly not to rule?? she is viserys’ beloved son and heir so why won't anyone see it??? why is everyone committing treason??? it’s fascinating.

Stop comparing Alicent to Cersei. Compare Rhaenyra to Cersei instead.

Let’s go over some similarities they share, shall we.

1. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra had several children with their lover (Jaime and Harwin) and pretended like those children were legitimate even if it was pretty damn obvious in Rhaenyra’s case that they weren’t, and somewhat suspicious in Cersei’s. Alicent didn’t love her husband either, yet her children were all legitimate and fathered by her husband.

2. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra were pretty spoiled children of rich parents that made them believe that their actions will have no consequences, so they could get away with pretty much anything since their daddy has their back. Alicent was never spoiled and never really did anything that she would regret. She always did her duty as wife, mother and queen.

3. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra always pretended like their children are perfect and could do no wrong. I’m cheating a little with this one, tbh, since Cersei kinda knew that Joffrey was fucked up but still, she never really did anything to stop him/fix him. The only time she slapped him was because he asked her “if Robert fucked other women when he grew tired of her.” She never really punished him for everything else he did and always took his side. Alicent always calls out Aegon for his behavior and don’t forget the “you are no son of mine”. Cersei would’ve never said such a thing to any of her children, not even Joffrey. Neither Rhaenyra or Cersei would comfort the rape victim of their child.

4. This one is kinda hard to explain but; both Rhaenyra and Cersei are responsible for the way their children turned out to be. Cersei was responsible for Joffrey being the way he was, and Rhaenyra was responsible for Lucerys’ behavior (i will never shut up about him cutting Aemond’s eye off). But you cannot fucking blame Alicent for Aegon being a rapist (i haven’t read the books but as far as i’m aware, that never even happened in the books, it’s just a show thing to demonize the Greens. Correct me if i’m wrong).

5. Even tho both were women, neither Cersei or Rhaenyra ever were feminists. They only cared for themselves and their own well being, as well as their children’s. Alicent has always been an altruist and although she doesn’t do much to overthrow patriarchy either, she doesn’t really have the power to do that. But again, at least she cared for others and the smallfolk, not just for herself.

6. Cersei kills or threatens anyone who dares speak to her or her children the wrong way, and Rhaenyra isn’t much different, being afraid that the truth about her bastards might come out. Alicent was not an usurper, she never tried to silence others for the truth, since she has nothing to hide.

Jace takes the news about you being a camgirl pretty well.

It only takes about a minute or two for him to regain consciousness.

You hand him a bag of potato chips, the two of you sitting down face to face as you tell your friend everything. Jace sits there, watching you speak intently. He feels like his entire existence has been turned upside down at this new revelation but he realizes how much harder this must be for you. He even stops by McDonald’s to get you both an order of chicken nuggets and soft serve ice cream. You’ve never been so grateful for Jace Velaryon as you are today.

He drops you home, walking you to the door of your apartment, leaving a chaste kiss on your cheek, hands in his pockets as he trudges back toward the car.

And as he puts the key in the ignition he finds himself wondering…

Neither you nor Dany are shocked to see that Sunspear’s most famous couple are even more gorgeous in person than they are on screen. Ellaria radiates a sexy, powerful aura, so confident with how she moves as she walks over to greet you, wrapping an arm around you and kissing your cheeks in greeting. And Oberyn is one of the most handsome men you’ve seen in your entire life. He greets you with a kiss on each cheek as well, his suave, debonair nature making you and Dany both want to swoon. The two of you take a seat opposite them and place your lunch orders, Oberyn ordering a bottle of Arbor Gold for the table.

Ellaria leans over and smiles at you, hands folded beneath her chin, “So, from what we can tell, you don’t typically do collaborations. Is that because you don’t feel comfortable being intimate with someone on camera?”

“Well,” you pause before admitting to her, “I haven’t been intimate with anyone. This is something I just sort of started doing and ended up really enjoying it.”

Her and Oberyn exchange a surprised look, the latter speaking, “Well, how about we do something where you don’t necessarily have to be intimate with someone? We tease you with toys on camera? So it’s a bit of a gray area.”

“Oh, that could work,” you nod excitedly, “I really admire both of you and would love to make this collaboration work. Dany here is my best friend and my mod so she can work with your guys’ mod to figure out when works best.”

“Excellent idea,” Ellaria winks at you, lifting her wine goblet to clink against yours, then Dany’s, then her boyfriend’s.

You’re a bit tipsy by the end of lunch, but Dany remains stone cold sober, watching you giggling and enjoying yourself with a small grin on her face, thinking how much you deserve this after how stressed you’ve been. But what she gets a real kick out of? How flustered you get when eating dessert, a bit of whipped cream getting stuck on the corner of your lip. And Oberyn leans over to wipe it from your mouth, licking his own finger clean.

After the lunch, the two of you get into Dany’s car, chatting excitedly about what the actual fuck just happened. You cannot wait to do this collaboration, it might just be the most exciting moment of your life. You think to yourself that collabing with Jon will probably be a bit more nerve wracking since you actually know him, but you don’t completely nix the idea.

The idea of collabing with Cregan gets you very nervous, however. Maybe it’s because he’s so goddamn good-looking, or maybe it’s the massive crush you’ve developed on him. Whatever the reason, you decide to keep that on the backburner for the time being and focus on this upcoming collab.

As you and Dany drive through the streets of King’s Landing, you see none other than Aegon, Theon, and Viserys, standing outside Theon and Robb’s apartment building, sharing a joint. It’s weird, you think, but the three of them being buddies actually makes a lot of sense. Slutty. Smoke weed. Pretty but dumber than a bag of hammers. You say as much to Dany, who bursts into near hysterical laughter, honking at them and waving before driving away.

That night, after sobering up, you decide to do a surprise stream, which of course, all your loyal viewers tune into.

Thoughts on the Alysanne is Maegor's daughter AU? I feel like it has some interesting potential, and it vastly recontextualizes different parts of Jaehaehae (I do not like him sjsjsjs) and Alysanne's relationship (such as Jaehaehae's treatment of their daughters) but I wanna hear what you think about it!

I’ve touched on this a bit before but since you actually want to hear my thoughts, allow me to present to you my Jaehaerys Is The Goddamn Worst, And Alysanne Annoys Me Too: An Essay lmao but my answer is basically “yeah all of what you just said.”

I think it makes Alysanne much more palatable (to me) as a character because as she stands, she just fixates on forcing her daughters through these fucked up marriages at too young an age bc it traumatized her to be married and pregnant at 15 too but she’d never admit that being a willing participant in her own kidnapping by her brother-husband was the single worst thing that ever happened to her, and because Alysanne doesn’t want to admit it (and Jaehaerys would never see it as wrong or a mistake) F&B really shies away from delving into the fact that Alysanne is as deranged of a mother as Cersei is. So as she stands, she’s very flat to me because she’s presented very flatly and inconsistently. She’s so in love with Jaehaerys, she’s maritally raped by Jaehaerys, she’s a loving and doting mother, she forces her daughters into marriages when they’re the same too young age she was, she accuses her teenage girls of being scheming whores then gets angry when her husband accuses their teenage girls of being scheming whores, and worst of all we are just told “Maegelle tells them to make up so they do” so we don’t know why Alysanne gets over all of this. What is the point of riding a dragon when you never use that dragon to protect your daughters from unwanted teen marriages? We’re just not given a good enough justification for why her behavior is so weird and frustrating towards her daughters.

Make her Maegor’s daughter though…most of her behavior as an adult makes more sense. Like a worse version of Rhaenyra’s childhood almost - a father desperate for a son, but lowkey obsessed with his daughter, who makes all his hang ups about his parents the problems of every woman around him, except Maegor is out here blood sacrificing and torturing and starting wars and forcing babies on wives he discards quickly and brutally. Then here comes Jaehaerys on a white horse green dragon to save her from the horror her life has become, and he loves her so much he runs away with her even though Alyssa says they shouldn’t marry because people won’t like it. And they have beautiful children, and a beautiful marriage, and build a beautiful kingdom.

Then her pregnancies start getting dangerous. Gaemon, then Valerion, die. Alysanne thinks of the shriveled up mutants she called brothers, if Maegor’s taint has passed to her. Her perfect husband ignores her no, and forces Gael on her. Alysanne remembers that he said nothing to Rogar when Alyssa died, merely wept. Then her daughters start to die. Daella, Alyssa, Viserra, all within a few years. Then Jaehaerys makes Saera watch as he murders her boyfriend, calls her a whore, and says Alysanne cannot follow Saera to Lys. Alysanne thinks of Maegor torturing the Harroways over Alys’ presumed infidelity. Jaehaerys says he’s sorry, and her daughter badgers her into forgiving him, and she remembers how she helped Jaehaerys badger Alyssa into forgiving Rogar. Not two years later, Jaehaerys passes over Rhaenys. Alysanne thinks of how she was never enough for her father, how she felt so superior to Rhaena banished to Dragonstone and resented by Aerea, yet there she is dragging Gael away from court because she can’t stand to be with Jaehaerys. How her father was surrounded by dead women and dead babies and how Jaehaerys is surrounded by his own dead daughters, but surely she did the right thing, surely Maegor was worse, surely the realm is better off? Is he right to pass over Rhaenys? Is she enabling a man just as monstrous as her father? She will never decide, because Maegelle will guilt her about keeping Gael isolated at Dragonstone, and Alysanne will do as she’s told, just like Rhaena, and Alyssa, and Jeyne, Elinor, Ceryse, Alys, and Tyanna, just like every one of her daughters.

I do get why Alysanne is Alyssa & Aenys’ and not Maegor’s. The weird Targ babies, the line not descending from Visenya, Jaehaerys and Alysanne being held up as the perfect Targaryen couple specifically because they are brother and sister and dragon riders. I do even think canon Alysanne is likely traumatized by her time as a hostage on Dragonstone, and the ensuing war, and the trauma bond that caused with Jaehaerys, and it makes her idolize Jaehaerys, and then he isolates her at Dragonstone so he can swiftly and safely marry, groom, and knock her up. It’s not like,,,, a fun time, and it’s enough to make anyone crazy and weird about their daughters, but I think having her father be Maegor makes Alysanne herself much deeper because it gives her, as the most beloved Targaryen queen, a blood tie to the most hated Targaryen king, and a marriage to the most beloved Targaryen king. It fits better with a lot of the themes of the main series (again, imo) - forcing the spotlight on the outsiders to see how the affect the story from behind the scenes. The fall of Aegon’s sons, and The Long Reign, not told from the PoV or to serve the PoV of any of the kings or princes, but of the queen that tied them all together.

well yes legitimacy IS a social construct and the people who get on the internet and litigate who the rightful king is like “rightful king” is an innate concept and not ALSO a completely made up social construct confuse me too. Usurpation is a made up completely relative crime that you only get charged with if you lose and fail to hold onto power otherwise you ARE the rightful king. I think understanding that legitimacy and usurpation are just constructions of power makes the narrative more interesting and enjoyable because then we understand that right and wrong don’t matter because everyone who wants power is going to try and take it and justify it to themselves.

all that being said i do think that Rhaenyra getting her claim nullified because she is a woman (not that the greens wouldn’t’ve tried anyway even if she was a son they’d just be less successful) is obviously not great and worth noting in a story very much about the interactions between gender and power.

Matt Smith and his character are still the things the GA tunes the show for. Just like the GA watched GOT for Dany instead of D&D's own black hole character. I hate when film writers change things from a book to fit their little fantasies. For example in Harry potter lilly and James are ment to be 21 but the actors look mid 30''s. Their death was ment to be sad because they died so young. But no we got older actors because the directors wanted to have Snape played by Alan.

Just like house of the dragon we got a team green wet dream fanfiction instead of the tragic story of a woman fighting for her throne because of sexism and an awful stepmother.

I always distinguish between the book canon and the film/series canon, because for me the existence of one does not exclude the existence of the other. In such cases, the best example for me is Marvel - the movie and comic book canons can exist independently of each other, having their own fandom groups. And no one cares, even if one source is worse. The GoT canon and the ASOIAF canon are also two different things for me, and I know that there are people who do not know the book canon and limit themselves to the series. And that's fine, until they start claiming that what is the canon of the series should be placed above the canon of the books… well, usually only in those cases that suit them.

TG like to claim that the series is created for the benefit of TB (often because Rhaenyra should be a stupid and cruel woman, but she is not, as if F&B was not written in the way presented by TG sympathizers…), but the truth is, that the series whitewashes TG A LOT and it makes no sense to me. No one was whitewashing Cersei, Joffrey, or Ramsay, and people still managed to enjoy these characters. Why did someone decide it was necessary to do this? Some characters don't have to be tried so hard to be sympathetic. Back in the day, we could have a villain who was a villain because of greed and a desire for power, and that was okay. The way you people finds ways to shame and denigrate female characters for how they handle and process patriarchal violence and abuse is absolutely astounding, and imply that there's good victims and bad victims is absolutely ridiculous. None of these characters ''accept'' their suffering. That's such an incredibly disgusting thing to say. They are young girls that live in a society that restricts and limits them, and preys upon them and these are victims to men in power that use that power to use and abuse them as they see fit. That's why (alongside a plethora of other reasons, of course) you're not going to see me shame Rhaenyra for getting groomed by her grown male uncle, or Cersei for getting abused by Robert or Daenerys for being abused by her brother for years and sold to and SAed by a grown man.

All of these characters were stripped of any real choice and power and were forced into submissiveness and passivity by their violently patriarchal society for years and years, and the most meaningful part is seeing them break out of it. Stop making weird connotations to people emotionally connecting to victims of abuse who were regulated and constrained by people that have power over them, and had to survive by enduring and pretending. Like of course this is a narrative that I would be emotionally engaged with considering how much I personally relate to a lot of aspects to it in regards to my own life and experiences, and so many other people see differing aspects of these characters and their hardships, how they endured, who they became and how they broke away from all of the limitations, and it means something to them in regards to their own lives, and that's an absolutely beautiful thing.

Sansa, for example, attempted to kill herself, attempted to push Joffrey off the tower, constantly made digs at him when she could, bolted away and refused to kneel when she was forced into marriage and continuously aimed to get out at the right time. She never ''accepted'' her suffering. She did what she had to do to survive, but there was always steel underneath even as she was only eleven/twelve. There was a lot of power to that, and there was also a lot of power in all of the moments of her faking and enduring these horrors and continuing on pretending regardless. Also, Alicent strode in, interrupted and boldly declared war at her current enemies' wedding. All of these women are forced into horrible positions, had to endure, and break away from it or take control of their lives in their own time. Even if they hadn't endure, or didn't break away from it at the end, they definitely wouldn't be ''worse victims'' for it like you seem to imply. My other issue with the other side of the HoTD fandom is how you all try to dictate who people are and are not allowed to like and what takes people are and are not allowed to have based on your own personal narratives. Also, the ''too powerful for their own good'' isn't just my Targ take, it's the whole conundrum that GRRM explicitly stated he wanted to explore with that family. Like wow I'm talking about what this man wanted his readers to talk about. Big problem. Anyways, if you don't want to see my takes, don't go to my account. So regarding that anon about people not understanding why Alicent and Aegon knew Rhaenyra would kill all legitimate claimants including his children. This is a big problem with the ASOIAF/HOTD fandom where, a lot of these people need to have everything spelled out in crayon for them lmao. Like, unless Rhaenyra or Daemon directly state in the books or show they will kill Aegon and his siblings and kids, the stans won't accept it.

This relates to an even bigger problem with the fandom - the fandom has this tendency to judge a character by what they say and think about themselves and not by their actions or consequences of those actions. For a series that is based off of differing viewpoints, obfuscation, and playing with memory and ambiguity the fandom is hilariously stupid about this.

This is why you have so many Dany stans that literally cannot understand what Martin was doing with the Mereen, Astapor, and the Yunkai arcs. Dany will have chapter after chapter where she thinks of herself as a Good, Just, Selfless, Kind, and Benevolent Ruler and the fandom thinks 'Well, okay, case closed nothing to analyze here. She is obviously a Great Ruler it LITERALLY says so right there in the books YOU THINK MARTIN WOULD JUST LIEEEEE.'

Viserys was an idiot. Not by making Rhaenyra his heir. That was his legal right as king. Or even remarrying since the royals were down to three at that point. He should have married either someone so low down the social ladder that is would be borderline insulting to nobility to have her as queen, a foreigner, or just take a page out Nymeria's play book and no royal goodies for the rest of the kids: Egon, Amon, Helana, and Darrin. The issues with House Targaryen start with Jaehaerys and his refusal to establish succession laws for their royal house.

I know GRRM states succession laws were messy in feudal times but we have Nymeria establishing Rhoynar - absolute primogeniture laws in Dorne and the Andals following their own succession laws as well.

By Andal Law Rhaenys should have been the next Queen and the lords of Westeros would have been fine with it. Would there have been some discontent sure, but I imagine it would have been nothing like the dance.

However Jaehaerys goes through great lengths to publicly establish his House does not follow Andal Law and sets a precedent in the eyes of Westeros that House Targaryen follows strictly male primogeniture. Not only that but Jaehaerys allows and gives the great lords of Westeros the right to decide House Targaryen’s succession. It’s honestly fucking absurd.

So I’d argue the whole “it’s his right as King” is a little messy because it doesn’t really mean anything does it? Cersei establishes that for us in the main series, Kings die and their word means nothing after that. Jaehaerys knew this which is why he went through such great lengths to “officialize” The Great Council.

In Viserys’s defense he does have all the lords swear to Rhaenyra in an official ceremony…but like Daemon doesn’t even show up lol. It’s such a joke and shows Viserys’s inability to rule. Ultimately his decision to marry Laenor & Rhaenyra was a good one and could have been established as well…”fixing” the error in the succession earlier.

Laenor & Rhaenyra are honestly a perfect partnership as long as they stay together at least until she ascends (The Strong boys being Strongs can be ignored for the time if the entire house is rallied behind them). Daemon needs to die… lmao his avaricious, annoying ass needs to go. Preferably after having children with Laena who can then wed Laenor’s sons.

I don’t think Viserys should have remarried since Rhaenyra’s situation is so precarious in being the first Targaryen Queen. However if he had too. You are right that it absolutely should not have been with such a powerful house as Hightower. Perhaps an elder widow past childbearing years.

The only excuse I can think of with him having had his children with Alicent is Viserys having their children publicly and officially swear obedience to Rhaenyra as their next monarch and force them all to intermarry. Aegon has to be sent off to the faith or the wall. Helaena forced to wed Jace as the next Queen consort. Perhaps Rhaena&Aemond but even then it’s all bandaid solutions me thinks…

I am someone who will always advocate for more women on the show, especially women from a different social/economic background from the noble ones we got in s1. So if they choose to make Sara Snow a real person, there won’t be any real qualms out of me about it (unless they write her weird lol). But ngl it will be hard watching Baela fight, quite literally, while jace is away possibly falling in love and Rhaenyra sits on her butt at dragonstone. And daemon is away grooming another young girl???

Like who and what are they fighting for!!!

So in order to get the house that Rhaenys, Viserys, and Corlsy all already give Rhaena and her future kids with Luke....the girls have to be handed their already-assured inheritances by those who are seeking to make them and those they lived with as family members for 6 years hostage...Cuz that's what Otto is doing: trying to make these girls hostages and limit their options so they, Daemon, and Rhaenyra can't retaliate in fear of these girls and these girls' parents' lives...If any of them were to just give up!

The other thing is that, once again, Corlys is the one to have made the arrangement with Viserys concerning who will inherit and marry who. not Rhaenyra, who is merely following their directive and wishes that also benefit the two girls mentioned!

You know, perhaps it's because of the jump cut and HotD's terrible writing limiting how much screentime each actor gets to show emotion, and how we the audience do not actually witness how Rhaenyra's family became a family after she and Daemon marry (Spoiler alert, it is!). jeynearrynofthevale writes this about one thing the show should have done:

Spend way more time on court politics and the buildup of the dance. Show why the two sides are falling the way they do and establish the core issues at play. Spend some more time establishing the characters before time jumps. Maybe give Rhaenyra motivation for ruling in terms of what she wants to do. Have her and Alicent navigate around each other in court.

the reason why it feels like Baela seems placid or uninterested is not because she is emotionally distant from her own family, but because these writers aren't worth their salt. the Jump cut robbed us all.

You don't even need to have read any ASoIaF book to understand any of this. how could one not know that being Queen Consort is a coveted and sociopolitically advantageous position?!

I think what GOT did with Cersei vs what HOTD’s done with Alicent are two very different things. Book Cersei was a fully realised character with motives, a backstory, and reasons both nature and nurture for how she had become the woman she is. She has thoughts and feelings, and all of that was ripe for adaption - GOT just didn’t bother. They didn’t like the character Cersei was in the books and the show version is just their shabby effort at trying to fix what they thought GRRM had wrong about her.

And obvs I’ve expressed my own thoughts about what I feel GRRM could have done differently with Cersei, but it amounts to a few tweaks to an already (imo) excellent character. GOT just razed her to the ground and started finger painting in the ashes lol

Alicent is different because Alicent is just a secondhand portrait of a tired trope in F&B. She’s just a wicked stepmother, and we don’t even have a perspective to see why she’s that way: she’s just the villain to Rhaenyra’s anti-hero, and honestly?? It’s fucking boring lol. She has no interesting motives, no interesting personality traits, she just wants her kids on the throne and she wants Power™️ and it’s like cool okay well. GRRM’s ‘grey character’ motif didn’t even seemed to apply to her, because there was no sense of interiority or conflict. She’s like…. barely even a pound shop Cersei, there’s just nothing there lmao. And like fine, that’s the format GRRM was using, it doesn’t allow for his usual character work, but I reserve the right to be bored by it

And I don’t really know why people are griping over the loss of that. Like…. no one was talking about Alicent before HOTD. No one had any real thoughts about her character. No one cared. But HOTD couldn’t just include a character like that and expect her to hold up, there had to be some workshopping. And there was. And now people are interested, because she’s got some of what makes a character worth watching in this franchise. Ageing her down and giving her that backstory with Rhaenyra is a choice, sure, but it’s a choice compared to a complete lack of them in the case of F&B’s Alicent. They could’ve adapted her as a kind of Cersei, but why tread that ground again (with likely lesser results) instead of doing something new?

I think actually making a female relationship one of the core relationships in HOTD is also really important - we don’t get those much at all in GRRM’s world, much less centre stage. I hope we get more still, with Rhaenys and Rhaenyra/Laena and Rhaenyra etc, but it’s not like Alicent and Rhaenyra comes at the expense of any of those - or the expense of anything really lol

Cregan stands there for a minute after you close the door, grinning to himself, before walking back to his apartment, feeling very pleased with himself. He can’t remember the last time he felt this excited for a date, even more so because he knows you’re not going to be the kind of person who shames him for camming, considering you do it yourself.

Back at the Targaryen-Velaryon family’s mansion, Daemon, Alicent, and Rhaenyra struggle to come up with an excuse to get Luke out of the house.
