#Living Wage

GOD I wish the minimum wage was a living wage.
I'm not flipping burgers, I'm cleaning litterboxes and doing basic vet care like checking weights, administering medicine, bathing, using IVs, keeping records, making lists, doing photography, and way way more. But the point is even if I was just cleaning litterboxes... I love the work. I wish I could pay rent. Shouldn't I be able to clean litterboxes and feed cats who were rescued from the streets and do that fulfilling wonderful work without wondering where I'm going to live?
Shouldn't someone be able to flip burgers, make art, clean up trash, care for the oceans, teach your children, or rescue animals without being forced to choose between their job and their bills?
What if I don't WANT to climb the ladder and use my degree and search for high stress high pay jobs in order to live? What if I want the high stress job of seeing a kitten crashing below survivable temperature and bringing them back from the brink of death, knowing that I'm the only thing standing between this homeless, unwanted kitten and an early grave?
Shouldn't that be enough? Shouldn't I be able to afford food and rent by doing that?
I don't want to work at a vet office that can give me steady pay increases. I want to work here, with cats who have no owners, nursing them back to health and helping pick their forever home. I want the infrastructure to support me in doing that. I want the laws to say I can and have programs in place to make it so my shelter CAN support me. I want rent to reflect wages. I want wages to reflect rent.
I want to help the world and be able to survive doing it. I want to thrive doing it. I want that for everyone.

Republicans see the world through the lens of rape culture enabling billionaires.
In GOP world, rapists need rights. Abusive billionaires need more advantages. Safety nets must be destroyed to fatten top 1% tax cuts.
Vote Blue.

I don't want a livable wage, I want to live without a wage
I don't want to limit the ages of who governs us, I want no one to govern us at all
I don't want to switch to electric cars, I want to nearly eliminate cars and put effort into eco-friendly means of public transport
I don't want to settle on social change, I want to build a new world from the ashes of the old

The B.C. government is shutting down a commission it created to improve pay for the province’s lowest-paid workers, despite the objections of labour leaders and the commission’s own members.
Last week the provincial Labour Ministry quietly published the final report from the Fair Wages Commission, which examined the gap between the minimum wage and the “living wage” needed to cover basic costs for families.
The report’s biggest recommendation was that the commission should become a permanent, independent body to study and advise government ministries on how to address the prevalence of low-wage work.
But the Labour Ministry rejected the call, saying in an unattributed statement Thursday that it “is not considering making the commission a permanent entity at this time.”

For National Zookeeper Week, it would be interesting to theoretically message or email a local or frequently visited zoo and request as a regular patron that keepers be compensated appropriately for the work they do.
Politely, of course, since those the people monitoring public facing accounts are just the messenger.
Kind of important for people who take care of highly endangered animals to be able to afford rent and food, after all, without having to work multiple jobs.
Might have an interesting impact.
Theoretically.

Currently, the minimum wage in New York City is $16 per hour, but the sub-minimum wage for tip workers -- that's bartenders and waiters -- is less than $11 per hour. The assumption is they make up that difference with tips. "Women of color are tipped much less than white men and it's very unjust and unfair," Assembly member Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas said. A new bill being considered in the state Legislature would require restaurants pay their servers minimum wage. "We want to make sure folks can still take home that extra cash but their paychecks are able to provide a livable wage," Gonzalez-Rojas said.

Friendly reminder regarding strikes
When the media cries about how the 'strikes could hurt the economy' - the correct response is, "I guess they're essential workers and should be PAID A LIVING WAGE."
