Writing about film for more than ten years has allowed me to cover movies from blockbusters to indies. It’s also given me the privilege of attending major events like TIFF in Toronto and Sundance in Utah. While traveling around the country is nice, it’s the ultimate thrill to be on my home turf, proudly…
The Daily Show and its consequences have been a disaster for comedy.
In the before times, back in the long long ago there was a man named Craig, he was a tall man, he was a funny man, and he knew how to make late night comedy worth watching for everyone.
For those of us that remember those bygone days we know it used to be fun and lighthearted, and funny without resorting to constantly shitting on one demographic or another.
It was comedy for the sake of being funny and everyone was available as a target.
We had quality comedy in the Kilborne days, before the darkness came.
Before stewart ruined it, by being a pretentious partisan douche that thought his job was to tell people how they should live, act, and vote.
Instead of making them laugh. One of the few good things I can think of him doing in the last 15-20 years is fighting to ensure the 9/11 victims are still being cared for.
Look at those two faces in the promo shots and tell me which one is going to have the show that's actually funny and entertaining for a wide audience.
Now we have jackasses treating a comedy show as legitimate news, dragging the media literacy of the country down with it.
Show Description:
On May 12th at 7pm & 9pm please join "3 Times Voted Best Comedian in Pittsburgh"Gab Bonesso as she returns to Arcade Comedy Theater to record her upcoming album tentatively titled Gab Bonesso: Manic Depressive. Gab is also a Nationally Awarded Mental Health Public Speaker and Children's Performer (the Josh and Gab Show). Throughout her career Gab has used comedy as a way to share her journey with mental health and to promote kindness in schools. Through her work with Josh Verbanets (Meeting of Important People front man), Gab started writing music and has been writing songs for the last decade. Her upcoming album will feature LIVE standup comedy, and original music that will be recorded in-studio. Gab is working with legendary Pittsburgh producer and musician Jake Hanner (Donora) on this project. The idea is to use both standup comedy, original music and other sounds to convey the mind of Gab Bonesso. Josh Verbanets is also working on this project as both a musician and producer.
SOME STUFF FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT GAB!!!!
Gab Bonesso has been described as "the read deal and f**cking hilarious" by Curb Your Enthusiasm's Richard Lewis.
Lizz Winstead (co-creator of the Daily Show) described Gab as a "Superstar".
TJ Miller (Silicon Valley) said that Gab was, "an AMAZING alternative comedian and not just in Pittsburgh, like everywhere."
Joining Gab on May 12th are Harriet Riley and Alan Olifson.
Harriet Riley, a UK native, has become a recognizable presence in the Pittsburgh comedy scene. Harriet's wit, keen eye and hilarious humor about American culture is absolutely brilliant. She is one of the best hosts in Pittsburgh and can be seen every summer hosting the Milvale Music Festival. Gab is so excited to have Harriet joining her for this special night.
Alan Olifson is an award-winning humor columnist, public radio commentator, comedian and regular host of Pittsburgh’s monthly Moth StorySLAMs. He created the acclaimed storytelling series WordPlay in his hometown of Los Angeles. He’s hosted storytelling events for conferences, schools and, believe it or not, bridal showers. His book, ManChild: My Life Without Adult Supervision, is now out on Six Gallery Press. Alan relocated to Pittsburgh with his wife and two children years ago but never tires of hearing people complain about “traffic.” Gab is a big fan of Alan and so happy to have him on the show!
This week, celebrate the New Year with a bunch of events, including an all-day Game-A-Thon, the Shaq'tacular Spectacular VR concert, Lizz Winstead's comedy purge of 2022, a Times Square metaverse, Sparklerama at the MN Children's Museum, and more!

~special~ 394. Newseum Daily Show Exhibit: Seriously Funny
Earlier this week, I finally made it to DC to go to the Newseum and to see the Daily Show exhibit. Most of it was Daily Show post 2005, around the time I stopped watching because the interview segment was beginning to overtake the actual show -- of course this is just my personal opinion. I was there for the correspondents more than the interview.
There were some gems from the early days however:
(i’m really sorry if some of these look blurry, you know, no flash in the museum)
This is the only mention of the Craig Kilborn years. It’s a picture from an issue of Esquire. The women standing next to him are Lizz Winstead and Madeline Smithberg, creators of The Daily Show. I got legit excited up in Panera when I saw the magazine on the Internet Archive. (January, 1998, big reading size here, 2)
OH. This was the infamous article where Craig said that Lizz found him attractive and if “I wanted her to blow me, she would.”
Craig got in big time trouble, was suspended for the show for a week, and correspondents Beth Littleford, Brian Unger and A. Whitney Brown hosted. Sadly those clips are gone forever.
Anyway, back to Jon. Right when you walk in, you see that there is a giant braille transcript of the exhibit:
Jon’s desk is incredibly tiny. This was the desk he had from 2007-2015.
lol, I almost cried when I saw Jon’s stuff he kept under his desk.
Like Jon, I also prefer a cheap bic pen.
When Steve Carell got on John McCain’s campaign bus back in late 1999, it was of course a big deal, to have someone from little Comedy Central interviewing a major presidential candidate.
I want that 3D Jon smiling face in my roomoffice for the rest of my life. By the way, there were NO Daily Show items in the gift shop. None. Newseum kinda dropped the ball there.
Oh man, back in the day I used to chase down any magazine in Barnes & Noble or at Target if they had a Daily Show ad inside. This one is from 2004.
I realized when I was at the exhibit, these two magazines have been stuck in our storage unit since 2005. Sadness.
There was a little binder of correspondents near the end of the exhibit. I was like, “great, its probably just going to be Steve, Stephen, and anybody who was on the show past 2005.” but nearly everybody was in the binder from Jon’s tenure. Steve’s screencapture was from during the 2000 Election recount.
I think if I didn’t have a relative with me, I would have started crying while flipping through this book.
Damn, they even put Miriam in here.
Okay, this is when I almost began to well up seeing my boy Mo, and Beth.
Aw, I really almost cried when I saw Vance.
Unfortunately, the rest of the newseum trip was canceled because I went with someone who was too offended by the other exhibits at the museum. I’m trying to make it back out there (by myself) before the museum closes (moves?) by the end of the year.

You know I have to plug my Daily Show zines at the end of this entry, right? I have a Nordstrom Card bill coming up from the damage from this trip.
This is the one about my fan website I had about the show from 2000-2005. I just recently lowered the shipping on it. The binding is also different now, I just keep forgetting to update the photo.
The second volume is my favorite episodes from 1999-2001.
