Week 12- Making Friends Abroad
Before you go abroad one of the most nerve racking thing for some is how the heck do you make friends? At Loyola, I would like to think I have a lot of friends and are pretty popular. But, now I am in another country for only four months and unless I plan to isolate myself and just talk to birds my whole trip I think it is best to make some friends. Something that is important to remember is that everyone is in the same boat as you. For me, it was easier to see who was on the boat with me because I am in a Visual Arts Living and Learning Community. I chose to live with people who are passionate about art and wanted to learn more about it. I believe I discussed this in a previous post of mine but this really made making friends easy. Automatically, I knew I had something in common with the nine other people I was living with.ย
At this point, I feel like I have made some real friends and I know I am really going to miss them when I have to go back to the States in a few weeks. The beginning was a little rocky, none of us knew each other or really knew what each other was about. One weekend, my roommate asked me to go to the Glass Market in Copenhagen and I nearly didnโ€™t go because I just wanted to go home and feel the comfort of my friends back at home. I encourage you to push past that feeling! In the beginning, never pass on an opportunity to make friends because no one will admit it but, they want to be friends just as badly as you.ย
Now one of my roonmmates, Clรฉo, and I are here enjoying the rooftop breeze at a cafe on top of Illum. If you told me at the beginning of the trip I would be thriving and feeling comfortable with these people I would say you were nuts! Not because they were mean or had a weird smell or anything but because I was scared. I was scared that they would think I was weird or that they would decide they didnโ€™t need to have me around. But, if you have friends at your home school and are confident in who you are donโ€™t worry! Friends will come and they will experience your growth and fun abroad with you!

Week 10- Reflection on the past two months...
Tumblr media
This is a picture I took while at Stevns Fort.ย  My class had a field study here at a military bunker. Iโ€™m no history buff so the missiles and copious surveillance technology from WWII really didnโ€™t excite me. It was cool but what really took my breath away was seeing the view of the sea from this small underground bunker. The bunker led out to the sea and I have never been part of a scene so tranquil before. Waves crashing up against the small pebbles and watching some of my class members skip rocks across the sea was a sight that I made sure to remember forever. This moment at the fort made me realize that I have been abroad for over two months and this was the first time that I had seen the legendary coasts of Denmark that so many Danes have told me about during my stay here. I realize that I have gotten comfortable in Copenhagen and that is not necessarily a good thing.ย
In Copenhagen, I have a solid routine and I am learning where everything is and I am pretty confident with directions but I have stopped exploring. I lost the desire to explore and see the many hidden gems of Copenhagen and that isnโ€™t good. Traveling while abroad is cool but the place you decide abroad becomes a second home. This is something that I thought I would never say about Copenhagen but traveling really made me realize how nice Copenhagen is and how thankful I am to be studying here.ย
That be said I should make an effort to continue to explore Copenhagen and see the many museums and foods that I have yet to try. I need to try the street food and the waffles on a stick. I am comfy here and I feel like I feel so at home that I am treating it like I am back in America just enjoying the every day life. But who knows when I will have this opportunity again?

Week 5- LLC Weekend
Tumblr media
I think one of the best decisions I made before coming to Copenhagen was applying to be in a Living Learning Community. This housing options allows you to meet people who are interested in similar things as you and you get to explore this interest in Denmark. There areย  a lot of different LLCs to choose from there is Music, Performative Arts, Entrepreneurship, Social Justice, Visual Arts (which is what I am in), Culinary and some more I canโ€™t think of.ย
Because I am in the Visual Arts LLC I explore the art scene in Danish culture. Something that has me go to things I would never normally go to and experience Copenhagen even more. We have done a couple of events as an LLCย  like going to visit the Cisterns in Copenhagen and going to the opening of an art gallery!
This week was our LLC Weekend where we spent the night at an art museum and went to a sleep concert. Although, I learned that despite the name youโ€™re not supposed to sleep at a sleep concert. Anyway, we went to a small looking white building that looked more like a church than a museum. We put our bags downstairs by the cafe and started exploring
All the art there were live installations so there people making art with rope and for one piece we were immersed in the art and were part of a musical. The sleep concert was not for me because I would describe it as a whale yelling in your ear for eight hours but it was an experience to remember. I highly recommend doing an LLC if you go abroad because you really get to see some Danish culture as well as meet some really cool people.ย
