Man, I am just in such constant awe over how quality these Hedkandi releases always are. I mean, I honestly couldn't tell you what their comps are sounding like these days—and they've been owned by Ministry of Sound since 2006 anyway—but back at the turn of the millennium, when they were on their own as an independent UK-based entity that was mostly specializing in glamorously chill and soulful house music, this label really just could not find a way to ever miss. Every single dispatch just seemed to come with an unwavering commitment to a certain sleek-sounding, contemporary underground, and by the time you were done listening to one of these things, it would always put into perspective just how vast and sonically diverse this whole little-known world that they were sampling from truly was. And it would also leave you scratching your head as to why the American music cognoscenti largely chose to ignore it all too ❓❕

Now, Hedkandi is known especially for its array of house comps, but something else that they've also kept a close and keen eye on since jump is chillout. In fact, the label's second ever release was the initial installment in their Serve Chilled series, and this 2001 third volume from that same series, as had been their standard, is pretty damn exquisite too. This is a double-disc that delivers a bunch of different and luxuriant strains of downtempo, but two types that it really seems to hone in on especially is a British-born vocal kind that features a soft and quiet, often reflective lead female vocal (think Portishead or Massive Attack's "Teardrop," which was fronted by none other than Elisabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins), and the other is just sublimely loungey bossa nova vibes 😌.

So let's get a prime example of each, shall we? For that UK vocal stuff, we have Rae & Christian's beautiful "Not Just Anybody," a quintessentially silky-smooth, submerse-yourself-in-the-bathtub kind of chill pill that features Mark Rae's very own cousin, Kate Rogers, on vocals. Just purely blissful escapism here, and with some wet trumpet between some of Rogers' singing too. An absolutely phenomenal song.

And for the bossa nova, it's hard to pick just one here, but "Jelba," by the UK's Russ Gabriel, is a track that might lull you into a full daze. It takes a little bit of time to start to fully unwind, but eventually it hits some extra sweet spots by combining its highly rhythmic bossa elements with extremely mellow keys and a cycle of things like electric guitar, panned-right acoustic guitar, and a bunch of percussion too. Breezy and pure instrumental joy 😊.

So, yet another terrific offering here from the one and only Hedkandi empire, before it had really managed to grow out all of its own tentacles. A few tracks here and there seem to go for a little bit more of a mass appeal, and as a result, end up missing the mark, but for the vast majority of these two discs, you can really expect nothing short of truly vintage y2k-era Hedkandi greatness 👍.

Today's pic post spawned a possibly-weird question from a USian - do British men really sit in a bathtub? By choice? Do they not have showers in the old houses? I have rarely - very rarely - seen a man in the US sit in a tub unless no shower was available.

Much like anything, this is largely down to personal preference, but yes! Some British men sit in a bath by choice rather than having a shower.

But before I get into that, I'll answer your question about showers.

Every UK house, flat, hotel, B&B, and guesthouse I've every stayed in has had a shower, and some of those buildings have been quite old. In fact, showers are more popular than baths, generally. I have no stats to give you on UK men specifically (searching for gender-specific studies on anything to do with bathrooms only leads to a minefield of transphobic articles). However, in a 2019 study, fifty-seven per cent of UK adults preferred showers to baths.*

But the question 'would people rather use a bath or a shower?' is a bit of a misnomer because you use them for different purposes. Having a bath is rarely just about getting clean. Unless you really had to, you wouldn't choose to spend all that time running a bath just for a quick scrub down, would you? Nah. For most people, a bath is about relaxing.

It's a bit of an event, usually involving scented bubbles or bath salts, a good book or a TV show, some candles or mood lighting, a beverage of choice, and maybe a face mask. And maybe a little rubber duck if you're letting out your inner child. All of this can be achieved fairly cheaply - it doesn't cost a lot to give yourself a bougie bath experience. Why shouldn't men treat themselves a little?

Away from the subject of relaxation, there's a labour aspect to this too. A lot of folks who work in really physical trades like construction will soak in a hot bath fairly often to help with sore muscles at the end of a long day. Maybe they're a bit less bougie about it because they do it more regularly. Or maybe they're winning at life and getting an hour of peace and quiet with some bath salts and mood lighting 3-4 times a week. Who knows?

Anyway, I hope this helped clarify that a) the UK does have showers in the vast majority of their buildings, and b) sitting in a bath is a fun thing to do sometimes.

2008 - Four Tops

Four Tops singer Levi Stubbs died at his Detroit home, aged 72. Stubbs had been in ill health since being diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and a stroke and other health problems led him to stop touring in 2000. The group signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced 20 Top 40 hits over the following 10 years, making music history with other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown stable.

2005 - Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury's 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow failed to sell in an eBay auction, having not met its reserve price. It had been listed by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, who had inherited the car from him. The auction had attracted nearly 200 bids and exceeded £60,000 (approximately $93,000). The luxury vehicle had not appeared in public since 2002, when it had been used to transport the Bulsara family to the premiere of the Queen stage musical We Will Rock You. It came with a box of Kleenex Mansize tissues left in the car by Freddie.

2000 - Jimi Hendrix

A flat in Montagu Square London, which was once owned during the 60s by Ringo Starr went on the market for £575,000. The two bedrooms, two-story property was also home for Jimi Hendrix, John & Yoko and Paul McCartney during the 60s.

1999 - Thomas Durden

Thomas Durden died aged 79. Wrote the lyrics to Heartbreak Hotel, one of Elvis Presley's early hits. Durden had read a newspaper account of a man who had committed suicide, the man had left a note saying, ''I walk a lonely street,'' Durden used the phrase as the basis for 'Heartbreak Hotel.’

1981 - Christopher Cross

Christopher Cross started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Arthur's Theme, (Best That You Can Do)', his second US No.1. and a No.7 hit in the UK.

1973 - The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones performed two shows at Foret Nationale, Brussels, Belgium, as part of a tour of the UK and Europe. Opening for the tour's shows were Billy Preston and American group Kracker, the first band to be signed to Rolling Stones Records. Bobby Keys didn’t show up for the concert, which resulted in him being banned by Mick Jagger from future Rolling Stones tours until 1989, with occasional exceptions. According to legend Bobby missed the gig due to him filling a hotel bathtub with Dom Perignon champagne and drinking most of it.

1964 - Manfred Mann

Manfred Mann started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy', possibly the first No.1 with a Nonsense Song Title. Also a No.1 in the UK, the song was first released by the US group The Exciters.

1962 - The Beatles

In between their lunchtime and night shows at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, The Beatles travelled to Granada TV Centre in Manchester to make their television debut. They appeared live on the local magazine program People and Places performing two songs ‘Some Other Guy’ and 'Love Me Do
