Now all of my readers will be able to remember which words truly belong in -[end italics]- Aotearoa -[italics]- and which do not.

Despite a distance of more that 18,000kms from the palace, New Zealand news headlines have featured a steady flow of royal family gossip: the latest potential snubbing, deep-dive analysis of the new king’s conduct, invitation list scandals and features on the coronation quiche.

For some, the fanfare and compulsive coverage has been grating.

“People are sick of it – they don’t care about how much a diamond costs and who’s wearing what dress,” said Hāmiora Bailey, a Māori artist [ringatoi] who created the plugin. “Across the globe, Indigenous folk are tired of [this] rhetoric around frivolity and class.”

The service, called Pikari Mai!, is a free plugin to download, and promises users an opportunity to “switch off the toff”. Made with agency Colenso BBDO, it uses data scraping to scan webpages for words and images related to the royals, then replaces those with articles linking to Indigenous news produced by Indigenous Māori outlets.

A bilingual book about the Māori creation story has won the highest accolade in children's literature.

Te Wehenga: The Separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku by Motueka writer Mat Tait (Ngāti Apa ki te rātō) won the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award at New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults held at Wellington's Pipitea Marae.

Te Wehenga simultaneously tells the Māori creation pūrākau, which explains the beginning of the world, in te reo Māori and English.

As media discussion of the Royals reached fever pitch approaching the coronation of King Charles III, Mr Bailey saw an opportunity to provide a service for those who have heard enough.

He told Aotearoa / New Zealand news outlet Newshub the plugin is "for everybody to enjoy" and prioritises indigenous news, "and in particular what's going on in your neighbourhood".

The plug-in works by scanning web pages for keywords and visuals relating to the Royal family. The aristocratic content is removed and replaced by articles sourced from multiple indigenous publishers.

Mr Bailey said he is not an anti-royalist as such but believes news closer to home takes precedence in this instance.

"We can all understand the institution at play. It is the Crown and I think, more recently, we've seen on Netflix and, you know, through media - it is a PR machine," he said.

"What I am trying to say is… we deserve to define who we are out in the motu (island) and how we are received, and we deserve as much coverage as that institution, if not more."

The NZ first party is now not only insisting that Māori people are not indigenous, they are also claiming that the only Māori who believe themselves to be so are "Elites" who need to be exterminated. Their definition of "elites" seems to be Māori who speak the language, are involved with or aware of their culture and history, or are generally not buying white supremacist bullshit.

A Māori party candidate has had her home broken into, her signs smashed down, her fence driven into and terroristic threats made both in these attacks and via mail.

Māori party billboards have been defaced with swastikas and broken down.

There have been two anti-māori marches in the last two weeks.

National, ACT, NZ First and a host of other far right parties are parroting and endorsing extremely racist conspiratorial shit about Maori and others. I am seriously worried that there is going to be a terrorist attack at a māori event at some point soon.

Tatou ma, we HAVE to vote in this election. And especially to pakeha, take further action. Support kaupapa māori, participate in the ongoing protests and counter-protests and educate yourselves. We have protests here supporting primarily American kaupapa that get more turnout than Māori led actions do. We need to change that.

I feel that māori are slowly starting to shift things in our favor, but unfortunately one of the clear symptoms of that is that right-wing extremists are scared enough to be making serious threats to our safety. Fuck them. Fuck them all. It will be a long fight over the next few years, but we /have/ to do it, if we want the best future for our country.

after seeing some of the discourse about how a lot of people are drawing miguel o'hara with western/european features and being reminded of something that has been bugging me for a long time, i just wanted to give a little reminder for some people out there;

the clones of star wars, jango and boba fett are all literally fully modelled after temuera morrison. a māori actor who incorporates so much of our culture and heritage in his performances and as such, deserves to be recognisable as the physical inspiration of said characters in fanart of them. with features as distinctive as his, it just makes it so jarring to see images of the clones looking NOTHING like him.

and before anyone says it, i am fully aware that the clones in the clone wars don't really look like him either and that too bugs the hell outta me. At the very least try to incorporate his distinctive features in whatever form your particular art style takes.
