Not a Fanbinding - Crochet Patterns!

One of my other hobbies is crochet. Previously I have printed out patterns to carry around in my craft bag, but the patterns always end up folded and crumpled.

In an effort to keep the patterns in acceptable shape, I figured I would protect them inside a book! I chose an open spine style, a combination of Coptic-style (the center stiches) and two-needle style (stiches on the top and bottom of the spine).

I am a fan of one particular crocheter: many of the patterns in my book I either bought from that artist, or were available online for free. They very much enjoy rainbow colors in their work. In tribute, I chose rainbow colors for my threads: the two-need style allows the color variation, where I couldn’t figure out how to make that work with Coptic-style. I was able to use of some of the embroidery thread stash my mother gifted to me.

The boards are the same material that clipboards are made from, kind of … mini-MDF? I don’t know the name of it. My SO was kind enough to cut the boards to size and drill holes for me. The cover paper is a decorative paper that I bought to cover magazine holders (I have not covered the magazine holders), and the inside of the cover is a paper I originally intended for another book, but this worked out much better!

All in all I’m very pleased with this book! At almost 500 pages, this should keep me busy for a while >.> I do plan at least one more book in a similar style to collect more patterns from other artists, but there are other books in the queue beforehand!

Blue felt his heart clench before he even opened his eyes. The air around him was pleasantly warm, but his skin was still cold and clammy, and his sweat almost stung from the temperature difference.

“Fuck,” he managed to spit out around his chattering teeth. Thankfully, the carefully controlled environment was already helping his body adjust to not being cryogenically frozen, and his mind was quickly catching up.

A mechanical, unnervingly cheerful voice echoed through the speakers in the ceiling. “Good morning. You have been in suspension for nine nine nine nine-“

“Shut up,” Blue groaned, tuning out the announcement and sitting up carefully in the bed…pod…thing he was in.

He rubbed warmth back into his arms as he took stock of the room. Aside from the smooth, pristine plastic and chrome of the cryo pod, the room was unremarkable. There was a greenish-grey carpet with a pile low from dozens of occupants over time. The furniture was modern but cheap – MDF panels printed to look like rich wood grain, the scuffed corners revealing the plain fiber underneath. Embedded every few feet in the ceiling were fluorescent light fixtures buzzing just within his range of hearing. The space was reminiscent of a cheap motel pretending to be a mid-range motel. Was it sad that he found the familiar view as comforting as he did?

“Seems they’ve been losing funding,” he muttered, finally readying himself to swing his legs out of the pod.

The announcement he’d been ignoring cut off abruptly, leaving a strange gap in the soundscape. A few seconds later, a voice he’d never heard before came from outside his room.

“Hello? Is this the room with the live human in it?”

“What the f…”

Without thinking, he stumbled across the room to the door. He nearly toppled, still unsteady from cryosleep, but he caught himself on the wall. 

“Hello hello!” the voice called again. Too cheery for Blue’s liking. “Are you awake in there?”

“Gimme a second, geez.” He pushed himself back to standing, already feeling more secure on his legs.

The door stuck for a moment, which was not something Blue ever knew it to do. But after a few strong tugs (kind of strong – he was still waking up, give him a break), it popped open. 

Blue was expecting to see some lab rat with a clipboard or a medical cart or something here with a surprise test. Instead, his eyes met the empty Relaxation Center hallway. 

“Yoohoo! Hi!” 

With the door open, he could locate the voice. Almost directly above him was a glowing red eye hanging from the ceiling.

“Uh,” he said eloquently.

“You must be the human! Obviously. Nice to meet you!” By now, his eyes had adjusted to the dim light in the hallway (why were the lights out?) and he could make out a white-painted metal sphere surrounding the glowing red iris. “You can call me Red. I’m the Readjusted Emotional Development core. I think I can access your files?” Sliding metal sheets stylized into eyelids shifted in and out as Red thought. “We’re in quadrant F, block S, row A, so you should be…”

“Blue,” he cut off. “Just…call me Blue.”

Red’s mechanical pieces paused for a moment, then his eye opened wide in excitement. “Okay! Nice to meet you!” he said. Again. “Obviously you’re alive, which is a great step one. And your brain works enough to talk! And carry a conversation!” Something whirred inside the core. “Does this count as a conversation?”

“I guess.”

“Great! I think the important part is that you understand me and can respond. So, check!”

“What are you talking about?”

How a single dangling robot eye managed to look sheepish was beyond Blue’s understanding. “Well, you’ve been, ah, asleep for…a while. Longer than is…recommended. So I wanted to make sure you were…functioning. That your brain was functioning.”

Blue felt his heart clench. “How long is a while?”

Red hummed noncommittally. “The math is, uh, a bit tricky on that one.”

A chill wrapped itself around him, and he absently felt his shoulder hit the wall. An incalculable length of time in cryosleep. 

“Whoa, are you alright?”

“Fuck,” Blue whispered, sliding to the floor. He swore he could feel his brain matter refusing to thaw. Years in cryo. More than years. 

A violent shiver ran down his spine. He was supposed to be woken up every 50 days to make sure he didn’t fall apart. They told him he’d get used to it, but going back under was more daunting every time. Even now, in the slightly-warmer-than-average relaxation center room, he could feel the chill of the pod’s activation sweep over him like he was sitting in it. It hurt, every time. Like frostbite but with teeth in every cell of his body. 

He had told them that when they woke him up for his first requisite cognitive check. They had made a note on a little clipboard and told him they would ask him again next time. And then they had put him back in. Over and over. Until he had stopped describing it, and they had stopped making little notes. Just little ticks on a checklist and his own impending dread.

They had promised to wake him up every 50 days. All he could do was trust them to follow through. At least the cryo-inducement was consistent in its pain; he could trust his own senses. But he was apparently right to doubt their calendars.

“Blue? Blue, can you hear me?” Red’s concerned mechanical voice cut through the icy fog surrounding his thoughts. “I’m sorry if I scared you. You’re scaring me, now. Please, tell me you’re okay.”

Blue let out a slow breath, forcing the cold out of his lungs. “I’m fine. I’m fine.”

“Great! Because we need to leave.”

“What? Why?” He was already pulling himself to his feet.

“It’s a bit of a long story. Hypothetically, we should be relatively safe for now, but I don’t like our odds now that your room has been reactivated. He’ll notice eventually, and we should be somewhere very far from here when he does.”

Blue unzipped the upper half of old jumpsuit he was wearing and pulled it down his from his shoulders. “Who’s ‘he’?” he asked as he tied the sleeves around his waist.

Red twisted around on the rail he was attached to. “Vio, of course. He runs everything. Now, let’s get out of here!”

HDF

Similar to MDF, HDF (High-Density Fibreboard/Hardboard) is a manufactured composite panel product formed from compressed wood fibers. It is sometimes referred to as HDF wood. With a normal density of up to 900 kg/m3, it is a stronger, harder product than MDF. Where this density is necessary, HDF is mostly utilized in laminate flooring products, while it is also used in underlayment and door skins. Given that HDF is frequently supplied with perforations and has a normal thickness of 3mm to 8mm, it is absolutely improper to use it as a base for interior moldings.

Advantages of HDF

Due to its excellent soundproofing and high insulation value, HDF is frequently used for kitchen cabinets, classroom furniture, and bedrooms in interior design. Especially with older types, hardboard has frequently been employed as the surface material for clipboards. In addition, several skateboard ramps and the half-pipe use it as the last layer. Hardboard is also widely utilized in theatrical settings, frequently as the stage's final painted surface and as the walking surfaces of built-in scenery. Below I'll make a list of everything that I got that was mandatory by the school to get and I'll give descriptions:

Face Masks Black Disposable 100PCS for Men & Women Adults Breathable Face Mask Brand HUEZOE. This is important for clinicals obviously and given the state of the viruses and bacteria going around in the world, I'm staying as safe as I can lol.

Reebok womens Walk Ultra 7 Dmx Max. These are amazing, I've already tested them out and they're genuinely so easy to walk in and I have super flat feet and a lot of pain because of arthritis.

Airanes Anti Fog Safety Glasses. These were mandatory on my end for my school and I looked for hours, sifting through reviews and I tried them on and they're super cute.

MDF® Acoustica® Deluxe Lightweight Dual Head Stethoscope. THESE ARE SO COMFORTABLE. I love them and I've been using them and testing them out with Justin and my mom, it's also a very justifiable price.

Prestige Medical Adult Premium Aneroid Sphygmomanometer. This is so cute and I'm hoping to really make it a conversation piece with elderly and kiddos.

Utopia Care Medical and Nursing Lister Bandage Scissors. These were required by the school and these are very comfortable to hold and your hand doesn't cramp up at all.

Waterproof Horizontal ID Badge Holder. These were required and so were the stationary clips they come with. We're not allowed to have retractable ones since people like the elderly and kids will pull on it.

Here, I'll make a list of everything that I got just for fun:

4Pcs Headbands with Buttons Face mask for Nurse. This I got because I have bangs and hate when hair gets in my face. I think it'll be useful in all environments; lab, lecture and clinicals.

Lion Latch. This I got because I wear some jewelry and I don't want to lose anything when in lab and clinicals.

Peppermint oil. THIS IS A MUST. I don't know if you've smelled the smells that come out of hospitals and patients, it's insane. So I'm gonna take this peppermint oil and put it between two masks when I know I'm going into a stinky case.

Opoway Stethoscope Carrying Case. This I got to keep my stethoscope and blood pressure cuff safe since I'll have a lot of things in my bag at all times.

Hongri Clipboard. This is just a must considering we'll be walking and standing a lot in lab and clinicals. It's really sturdy.

Office Supplies Divider Sticky Notes. These are amazing to pop in and out of text books.

On top of that, I got a really nice planner, pens and highlighters and pencils, a huge three ring binder with 36 dividers, 2 pairs of scrubs from my college bookstore.

I'm still hoping to get a book bag and a new lunchbox.

Recommendations:

So, nurseinthemaking on etsy is AMAZING. She sells, planners, study guides and a BUNCH of other things. On instagram and tik tok, she'll nclex questions of the day and she'll post individual concepts broken down. From her, I would recommend the nursing bundle and the full set of nclex flashcards. It's important to start studying for the nclex as you go through the program instead of once you finish it.

I also recommend RNExplained on etsy and the other social medias.

New semester starts tomorrow and I’m getting ready, so I thought now would be a good time to show you guys what I bring with me to clinicals. Clinical is actually on Friday but I like to prepare early in case I need to run out and grab something!

hand cream + hand sanitizer // cerave + vaseline // you can get these anywhere but i get them from target. i love this hand cream bec its not only moisturizing but it creates a barrier to protect your hands from constantttt hand hygiene. health care facilities obv have hand sanitizer but this is my fav for personal use because its super moisturizing and NOT sticky

essentials for your lady bits // cora // i love this brand bec they are organic + don’t have any nasty chemicals or fragrances. i have the subscription plan which makes them pretty cheap + you don’t have to worry about running out to grab more them when you realize you forgot to buy them.

How to Make a Fabric Pinboard

How to Make a Diy Fabric

Although individual upholstery tacks are available in 24 counts, it would have been very expensive to purchase enough for my entire board. I decided to add a nailhead detail only to the corners. My pinboard was transformed for less than $8. Next, I marked each corner with a ruler 1 inch apart so that I can know where I need to put the screws to attach it to the wall. To hang the pinboard up, I used 2 1/2" screws with flat washers. Because this pinboard was very light, I didn't need to attach anchors or screw into the studs. It should work fine without them. You should not drive the screws into the foam board too deeply.

Plan B was to go through my fabric stash and search for pinboard fabric. I discovered that I still had one tablecloth to match the ones I used for upholstering these chairs and this bench. The print is beautiful and I knew it would look great on my studio wall. I also had a tablecloth leftover from my son's first birthday party. It has sentimental value. I had a small foamboard with me, and I was looking to find ideas to turn it into a memo board.

Wrap a Bulletin Board in your favorite fabric

When you're done, your back should look like this. A brief guide for how to load a stapler has been included. The craft store sold me a muslin for $5 per yard.
