I mean it was a finale I guess.
I'm really feeling that spn effect (unsurprisingly). Profound feeling of "Oh that happens now I suppose. Alright. Something else could've happened too, but I guess we're doing this." - except with additional bloodshed, which randomises events even further. And of course it makes sense that anyone could die at any point, in this setting, but it also makes everything feel very inconsequential.
There is also that other spn effect; the constant quest to be more and MORE shocking and outlandish every time. It, again, further randomises the structure of the story. This has been the weakness of the whole show since season 2, it hinges on more and more outlandish villains instead of working with the cast we already HAVE, which makes everything so pointless. I mean, S2 introduced whatshername who's mainly forgotten after kicking off that alt right metaphor. Then we got Soldier Boy, who, frankly, was mostly interesting because JA is hot and the character was in some ways designed around that. We also got Neumann, we lost Maeve and Noir, we got three new characters this season, does anything matter? At all? Do we care?
This show could've worked a LOT better if we'd kept it confined to the main cast and worked with them. They have/had the potential to carry the whole story. Instead, we got this mess of ever-changing characters introduced as new villains to spice up the main cast, which to me just feels like those memes and sound effects people put into YouTube videos to keep people with short attention spans hooked. It also makes me feel that if the writers don't care about these random characters, why should I? They're a bunch of new toys that get discarded once the shine has rubbed off.
Also, I'm so tired of the constant "oh but what if this good thing happened? - Surprise! Bloodshed!" Like okay. We get it. Can we say something interesting now?

Jensen may get a lead in a The Boys spin off, but honestly that entire franchise feels so "bought" that I won't be all that impressed. I'm not saying it because it's Jensen. Or Kripke. Or a half dozen of our other people. (That's what makes me hold back from being as critical as I'd like.) But I'm honestly tired of Amazon throwing so much money into promo that a short order streaming drop eats up all the creative bandwidth audiences have. Hope for better, but I think TB lead will be what he gets
Amazon has the try-hard vibe going with The Boys promotion, and then turn around and dumped it from it's Emmy campaigns and then the show fizzled out in season 3. My main issues are Kripke can't leave his ego at the door, which affected his writing.
Somebody once asked me how can Kripke be "too problematic" for SPN and "too PC" for The Boys.  Easy, Kripke is the common denominator.  How he treated SPN fans is how he's treating The Boys fans now.  Kripke did a fairly good job of painting SPN fangirls as crazy that shouldn't be listened to.  And now he's doing the same to The Boys fans by painting them as bigoted neckbeards that no one should listen to. It won't matter who actually makes up the shows' demographics, the small percentage of fans who are the way he's stereotyping them will be used to justify away all criticism. And it's like, it's just criticism, it's not like anyone is campaigning to get him fired or end the show, it's just people saying they did or didn't like the season 3 finale or did or didn't agree with a character's motivation.
Kripke seriously needs to stop commenting on the plot points via Twitter or interviews where he tries to insert elements into characters that are not present on screen, worse, it looks more like projections of his own agenda.  For example, he said Hughie was motivated by toxic masculinity to take Compound V.  People who have been watching the show would disagree because Hughie wanted to use it to protect people, meanwhile Kimiko takes the V because "so pure and selfless" but Hughie takes the V to protect people is just being toxic. Uh.. what? If Kripke wants to criticize toxic masculinity then he also shouldn't be a hypocrite about it. But you know what I think about toxic masculinity.  It's the same opinion I have regarding male feminists; it doesn't exist.  Dudes calling themselves male feminists are just pick up artists using it as a short cut through the courting process and getting straight into your pants.  Now apply that to Kripke's motive.
The problem that I think some people have with Kripke is that some of the questionable writing decisions stem from his desires to posture himself a certain way politically.  He said he won't kill off Maeve because he refuses to be "the showrunner that kills off an LGBT character".  And yet he killed Termite because he's not a main character.  He also killed off Noir, a popular Black character.   It all comes off as “I would rather sacrifice the story’s quality to avoid being bullied online by 5 twitter users.”  Writers like this become what they've previously mocked in the past, so Kripke is becoming Vought and focusing on popularity and projections lol.
Then the finale happened and that LGBT character Kripke wouldn't kill off became "Maeve could have beaten Homelander and she can survive falling from a skyscraper without powers because she's gay".   This then retroactively makes Maeve look like she enabled all of Homelander's terrible actions for years thus making her a villain.  Kind of like how destiel-hellers interpreted Cas's goodbye speech in 15x18 as romantic but then it retroactively makes Cas a villain the whole time.
If deconstruction and subversion overtakes good storytelling, then you've failed as a writer.

bit of a weird announcement:
that spn fix-fic I've been throwing so much of my time and life into for the past 2.5 years?
yknow, the one that quickly devolved into an incomprehensible crossover clusterfuck that requires the reader to know 4+ dead languages?
...yeah I'm not doing that anymore.
I guess it crossed some kind of Overcomplication Event Horizon bc I looked away for five seconds and when I looked back I realized that I'd written the bulk of a VERY fun original modern fantasy novel.
so yeah this is my announcement that I'm writing a book
(...or have already written a large part of a book. for two years. before realizing I was writing a book)
The Third Road
is a modern fantasy story combining mythology, solarpunk/hopepunk, environmentalist, antifascist, faecore and post-apocalyptic themes.
Since the industrial revolution, Heaven and Hell alike have been influencing humanity to further its destruction of the environment, and of itself, in order to create ideal conditions for the apocalypse. However, in the early 2010s, just as the apocalypse was set to begin... it didn't.
Now, ten years later, Heaven and Hell are mired in infighting and blaming each other for God's failure to appear as promised. Caught up in their own strife, they forgot about the countless chain reactions of death and ruin they had left on earth, needing only the tiniest push to topple.
Unaffiliated spirits of the apocalypse, angry at being denied their promised rule, began wander the earth and found a biosphere on the verge of total collapse, and many powerful humans extremely receptive to the idea of jump-starting Revelations.
This holy(?) collaboration began quickly amassing eager allies in other pantheons' spirits of waste and destruction, and as they pushed over the metaphorical first dominoes in various chain reactions, mortal, political, economic and supernatural forces alike rose to support their cause.
The only line of defense lies in various gods and spirits of the wild, the seasons and the cycles of time, but they are spread thin after years of undoing what they can of Heaven and Hell's damage and holding the world together with the magickal equivalent of duct tape and safety pins. Unprepared for the onslaught of the forces of Waste, only a handful of survivors were left the flames died down. Since then they have lived on the run, forming unprecedented alliances and taking on new roles as needed.
One such creature who finds herself in an unexpectedly central role is Daéna. Never given a name for most of her existence, she had, like most monsters, lived many incarnations alongside her more famous son, Grendel.
In this latest life, the pair had the good fortune to find a mentor and guardian in Queen Maeve of the Unseelie Court, and quickly rose to prominence in their own right.
For many years, the three have lived, traveled and fought together as the Fae Courts' fastest and foremost strike team against the encroaching spirits of waste, even as Daéna and Grendel's nature as half-fae, half-christian monsters put them directly in the center of the oncoming war.
It is now 2023, and everything has gone wrong.
anyway, though I will definitely keep applying/writing abt these HCs re:fandom on my main blog, I'll have a sideblog set up soon for everything related to the actual novel.

I feel like Stella Maeve is to me what those spn men are to you people in the sense that I am just confounded by her being upset that people read Julia as sapphic/prefer sapphic ships for her when she acts Like That tm with every woman she’s on screen with in the show… make it make sense

Maybe the prequel will have scenes where it just cuts back to Dean and Cas sitting on their porch in Heaven and Dean being like “what did you think of that story Cas?” And Cas is just like “Can we go upstairs and fuck now? I don’t care about this, I hate your dad.”

The way the boys fans get so viscerally angry about spn fans watching the boys makes me laugh. Especially the ones who defend it like “it’s gross thay they’re attracted to him ew” baby, it’s the boys. They all suck. Every single one of them. I guarantee you I can look up homelander x reader fics on here(and I have seen these under the homelander tag), the deep x reader fics on here(I have seen a few of these as well), y’all are thirsting after them too like you’re not above supernatural fans that still find Jensen Ackles attractive in this role. No one’s saying he’s not a shitty character but that doesn’t change that he is an attractive man. And most people who are thirsting over jackles are strictly thirsting over him as an actor, not soldier boy. Also lots of us are genuinely fans of the show and not just him. And I would argue most of the ones that are fans of just him are purely watching the scenes he’s in only. Please just shut up the world is falling apart, spn fans enjoying a show created by the creator of their show with a few stars from that show is not the thing to get angry over. And I mean it’s on Amazon if you’re getting morally righteous over an amazon show you might need to do some internal reflecting
