Sources and Production Crotonic aldehyde is produced industrially as a byproduct during various chemical manufacturing processes. One of the major industrial sources is during the catalytic oxidation of butadiene to produce acrylic acid. Crotonic aldehyde is formed as an intermediate product during this reaction. It is also found in trace amounts in the production of maleic anhydride from benzene or butane. Other sources include the pyrolysis of biomass and degradation of certain plant-derived terpenoids. Crotonic aldehyde levels may increase during the storage or cooking of fats and oils subjected to high heat.
