REVISITING A PHOTOGRAPH.
Tumblr media
Above: OCTOBER 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR, Lake Superior, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada.
BACKSTORY.
The timestamp is 5:05am. The time when I applied finger pressure on the shutter release and captured the ORIGINAL WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR. I remember how peaceful and whisper quiet that summer morning was. I felt content as I took in the scene. The rising sun over Thunder Bay's former Manitoba Pool 2 grain elevator as it illuminated the morning sky. Rays of sunlight reflecting off Lake Superior’s surface. I was confident images being captured inside my camera were good.
I didn’t think I’d come back to that shoot… to this photograph in particular. This past January I revisited the original photograph to perform additional work on it to better reflect how I felt and witnessed the scene when I captured it.
Tumblr media
Above: JANUARY 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR.
The interesting thing about the process of shooting is what the photographer witnesses, captures and commits to memory vs. a camera may be quite different. In my view post production is where those two avenues meet and a picture comes together. This doesn’t really apply to shooting in-studio where most elements are in the photographer’s control without too many surprises.
I thought my January 2023 version was the final image. I was incorrect. Yesterday I re-visited the photograph and thought it didn’t accurately reflect the moment I captured it. I could make it…. better. An updated version for October 2023.
UPDATING THE PHOTOGRAPH.
For photographers reading this, you may find the following interesting. I spent some time revamping the image and share details of the process below. The October 2023 version of the photograph is now heavily stylized compared to the original.
Which photograph one prefers will come down to personal taste.
COLOURS
Warm colours of the sunlight, especially the reds and oranges were enhanced to better reflect the mood. Colours in general throughout the photograph were warmed up, though some cool blue was left as the morning air was on the cool side. Reflections off the water’s surface have been enhanced. The atmosphere of the image now better reflects the low light that was quickly changing as the sun rose.
EXPOSURE
By changing the exposure, the photograph better reflects the low light of the moment, which was quickly increasing due to the rising sun.
CONTRAST
Smoothing out highlights and shadows makes for more of a muted appearance which better reflects the time of low-light capture.
BLUR
The water’s surface now has a beautiful, silky blur. The original image was captured with a one second shutter speed, therefore little blur exists. There’s a human subject in the image who wasn’t asked to sit perfectly still to allow for a longer exposure. In addition, the quickly changing light levels didn’t make this practical and would’ve altered the sun-ray details.
CROPPING
The image ratio and the image itself has been slightly cropped, making for a stronger story.
FINISH
Analog film effect added.

Above: ORIGINAL: WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR.
WRAP-UP.
As you can see there are many details to occupy your thoughts during and after the shoot. I’m quite happy with the new OCTOBER 2023 WOMAN WATCHES SUMMER SUNRISE OVER GRAIN ELEVATOR, and don’t think I’ll be pursuing more work on it. But as the saying goes:
Never Say Never 😄.

Cars for rent in brandon
Tumblr media
Whether you're exploring the vibrant city of Brandon or venturing out into the scenic Manitoba countryside, having a reliable set of wheels can unlock a world of possibilities. But let's face it, car rentals can put a dent in your travel budget. Don't fret, budget-conscious explorers! Finding cheap car rentals in Brandon is easier than you think.
Tumblr media
This guide will steer you towards the best deals, navigate rental options, and ensure you cruise through your Brandon adventure without breaking the bank. So, buckle up and get ready to discover the freedom and affordability of cars for rent in Brandon.
Planning Makes Perfect:
Before diving into the rental pool, a little planning goes a long way. Consider these key factors:
Trip Duration: Will you be cruising for a weekend getaway or embarking on a month-long exploration? Rental rates often decrease with longer booking periods.
Travel Dates: Peak seasons (summer holidays, festivals) see higher demand and prices. Opt for flexible travel dates if possible to snag better deals.
Passenger Count and Luggage Needs: Compact cars are fuel-efficient and budget-friendly for solo travelers, while SUVs cater to larger groups and cargo.
Transmission Preference: Automatic transmissions are generally more expensive. If you're comfortable with a manual, you can save some cash.
Exploring Your Rental Options:
1. Local vs. National Brands:
Local Brandon car rental companies often offer competitive rates and personalized service. National chains boast wider vehicle selections and convenient locations, but prices might be higher.
2. Online Aggregators:
Websites like Kayak, Expedia, and Priceline aggregate deals from various companies, allowing you to compare prices and features at a glance. Be mindful of additional fees and insurance costs mentioned in the fine print.
3. Discount Clubs and Promotions:
AAA members, loyalty programs, and corporate partnerships can unlock special discounts. Signing up for rental company newsletters or following them on social media can also alert you to deals and promotions.
Cheap Car Rental Gems in Brandon:
Now, let's delve into some budget car rental in Brandon companies known for their value:
Town Car Rental: This locally owned company boasts a stellar reputation for friendly service and competitive rates. They offer a variety of vehicles, from fuel-efficient compacts to spacious SUVs.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car: With multiple locations in Brandon, Enterprise offers a wide selection of vehicles and straightforward pricing. Keep an eye out for online coupons and weekend deals.
Budget Rent-A-Car: True to its name, Budget focuses on offering affordable rentals for all budgets. While their vehicle selection might be smaller, their prices are often unbeatable.
Beyond the Price Tag:
While price is crucial, don't overlook other essential factors:
Insurance: Understand the different coverage options and choose what best suits your needs. Consider adding personal liability insurance if your own policy doesn't cover rentals.
Mileage: Unlimited mileage packages might seem like a good deal, but if you're planning a short trip, a limited mileage plan could save you money.
Fuel Policy: Opt for "full-to-full" policies to avoid refueling charges at inflated airport prices.
Read the Fine Print: Carefully review the rental agreement before signing. Understand cancellation policies, late fees, and any additional charges.
Bonus Tips for Budget-Savvy Renters:
Consider public transportation: If your trip primarily involves exploring Brandon city, the local bus system might be a cost-effective alternative.
Carpool with friends/family: Splitting the rental cost with travel companions can significantly reduce your individual expense.
Fuel efficiency matters: Choose a fuel-efficient car, especially if you plan on covering long distances.
Avoid one-way rentals: These often come with hefty drop-off fees. Consider returning the car to the pickup location to save money.
Hitting the Open Road with Confidence:
By following these tips and exploring the cars for rent in Brandon options, you can embark on your Manitoba adventure without worrying about breaking the bank. Remember, cheap car rental in Brandon is possible with careful planning, informed choices, and a dash of savvy negotiation. So, buckle up, hit the gas, and create unforgettable memories in this beautiful corner of Canada!

The Provincial Nominee Programs of Manitoba and Saskatchewan
THE PRAIRIE PROVINCES•
Tumblr media
Provincial Nominee Programs are one of the most popular channels for skilled newcomers who want to work or study in Canada.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are permanent resident programs co-administered by provincial and territorial governments and the federal government of Canada. Regardless of the elaborate names the provinces and territories adopt for them, PNPs are composed of two major categories: a skills category recruiting foreign workers and a business category recruiting businesspeople.
This article introduces the respective PNPs of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Though the two adjoining prairie provinces may discourage some potential newcomers due to their extremely cold winters, they do have their charms. Manitoba has the sunniest winter in Canada despite its frigid temperatures, and it is the longitudinal centre of Canada, while Saskatchewan is best known for its grain farming and proudly labels itself the “Land of Living Skies.”
Manitoba was the first province to launch its own immigration program, yet it is still facing a labour shortage, which makes admission and retention of its provincial nominees equally important. Another fact worth mentioning is that Manitoba is the last province to have incorporated the Express Entry (EE) into its PNP, which it did in January 2018. Saskatchewan is one of the very few provinces that facilitates EE candidates without a full-time job offer from an eligible local employer. Meanwhile, its mandatory six-month business operation period before entrepreneurs may apply for the nomination is relatively short when compared to other PNPs’ business category.
The Manitoba Nominee Program (MPNP)
The MPNP consists of three categories: Manitoba for Skilled Workers, International Education Stream (IES), and Business Investor Stream. The skills category provides two streams: Skilled Worker in Manitoba and Skilled Worker Overseas. The IES, which has come into existence only recently, is intended for Manitoba graduates. The three streams of the IES indicate that it is an integration of skills and business: Career Employment Pathway, Graduate Internship Pathway, and International Student Entrepreneur Pilot. The business stream encompasses two pathways: Entrepreneur Pathway and Farm Investor Pathway (FIP).
The Skilled Worker in Manitoba stream sets two basic criteria for applicants: they have been working on a full-time basis for a local eligible employer continuously for at least six months; and they have obtained a long-term, full-time job offer from the same employer. Where applicants are graduates from other Canadian provinces, the requirements for the full-time working period extend to one year. The stream does not recognize work experience gained without a work permit and unauthorized work, nor does it accept self-employed and full-time students’ work experience. Job-ready language skills are required, but only applicants whose skill level is National Occupational Classification (NOC) C or D are requested to submit a language test result to prove that their language level has reached Canadian Language Benchmark  4 for English or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC) 4 for French.
The Skilled Worker Overseas stream is open to overseas foreign workers who have a strong connection with Manitoba. To be eligible, a candidate must either: (1) have a Manitoban supporter, either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident who is a family member or friend; (2) have previously studied or worked in Manitoba for at least six months; or (3) have been invited to apply by the MPNP. The province introduces two point-grid systems to select candidates: registration point-grid and candidate assessment point-grid. First, applicants must get 60 points out of 100 to be able to register with the MPNP. Then, after registration, candidates in the pool are ranked against a point system of a maximum of 1000 points. Previous study or work experience in Canadian provinces other than Manitoba cause deduction of 100 points each. The MPNP launched two pathways for this stream in January 2018 and February 2019 respectively: the Manitoba Express Entry Pathway and Human Capital Pathway. In addition to the above eligibility requirements, both streams require applicants to have a minimum of six months’ work experience in an occupation on the In-Demand Occupations list of the province, which further narrows down its access for overseas skilled workers.
The Career Employment Pathway and Graduate Internship Pathway of the IES share some common criteria: (1) applicants are graduates who have graduated from a designated post-secondary institution in Manitoba within three years; (2) their language level has reached Canadian Language Benchmark 7 or NCLC7; (3) they possess adequate settlement funds; and (4) they reside in Manitoba when applying to the stream. Nevertheless, the two streams suit different graduates and have their unique features. The Career Employment Pathway requires applicants to obtain a minimum of a one-year, full-time job offer from an eligible employer for which they have worked. It also requires that the position be related to their major and falls within the In-Demand Occupations listed by Manitoba. The Graduate Internship Pathway is restricted to Manitoba graduates who have completed either a master’s or doctoral degree. Though a job offer is not a condition, these graduates must have completed an eligible internship.
The International Student Entrepreneur Pilot of the IES is a business stream that accepts a maximum of 20 graduates aged 21 to 35, who have completed a minimum of a two-year, full-time academic program in the province. Language and residence requirements mirror the other two streams, but settlement funds double. Previous experience constitutes a favourable factor, yet not an eligibility requirement.
The Entrepreneur Pathway of Business Investor Stream requires that applicants, at a minimum: (1) possess $500,000 net worth; (2) have three years of business operation experience as either an owner-manager or an employee-manager; (3) have reached Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for English or NCLC 5 for French; (4) invest $250,000 if the proposed business location is in the capital area, and $150,000 if outside that area; (5) have a high school education; and (6) create one full-time employment for Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
The FIP of the Business Investor Stream is for farmers who have owned and operated their own farm for at least three years of the last five. Its net worth eligibility criterion equals the amount of the Business Investor Stream. A minimum of $300,000 investment is required and the language level is not specified, though the latter nevertheless remains a crucial assessment factor. The stream also demands that applicants reside on the farm and limits the farm to one that produces primary agriculture products. Approved FIP applicants need to transfer a deposit of $75,000 to the MPNP.
The Saskatchewan Nominee Program (SINP)
Saskatchewan classifies the SINP into four categories: International Skilled Worker Category, Saskatchewan Experience Category, Entrepreneur Category, and Farmer Category. The two skills categories break down into the following streams:
The International Skilled Worker Category, which is for workers who are not in Saskatchewan when applying to the category, includes:
Employment Offer
Occupation In-Demand
Saskatchewan Express Entry
The Saskatchewan Experience Category, which is open to workers working in Saskatchewan, includes:
Skilled Worker with Existing Work Permit
Semi-skilled Agriculture Worker with Existing Work Permit
Health Professionals
Hospitality Sector Project
Long-Haul Truck Driver Project
Students
The Entrepreneur category is unitary. The Farm Category sets up a stream for young farmers under 40 years old.
The Employment Offer requires applicants to obtain a job offer from a local employer in skill level 0, A, B, or designated trades listed by the province. In addition, they must have at least (1) one year of experience related to the offered position; (2) a score no less than 60 out of 100 of the province’s point system; and (3) reached Canadian Language Benchmark 4 for language.
The Occupation In-Demand stream is only open to workers in the occupations that are defined by the province as in-demand. A job offer is not requested. The minimum score, work experience, and language level requirements of the Employment Offer apply to this stream as well. It further requires that applicants complete at least one year of post-secondary education and possess adequate settlement funds. Moreover, since most of the in-demand occupations are licensed, applicants must be licensed to be eligible.
The Express Entry stream is among one of the most accommodating PNP streams. EE candidates may register with the province through this stream if they score at least 60 out of 100 of the province’s point system. The province selects high-ranking candidates to apply for a nomination.
The Saskatchewan Experience Category admits workers who have obtained a job offer from a local employer in qualified NOC skill levels, and have been working for the same employer for more than six months. Job offers need to be approved by the province. Skill level C applicants should reach language level Canadian Language Benchmark 4. Additional requirements for each stream are noted below.
For the Skilled Worker with Existing Work Permit, job offers should be in skill level 0, A, B, or designated trades listed by the province. The Semi-skilled Agriculture Worker with Existing Work Permit is aimed at workers in NOC 8431 and 8432. Applicants need at least to have a high school education and obtained their existing work permit through the Seasonal Worker Agricultural Program, International Experience Canada, or Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
The Health Professionals stream targets physicians, nurses, and other health professionals who have been working in their profession for at least six months and have obtained a job offer. For physicians, job offers must be offered by the provincial health authority or the health education institution for which the physicians are currently working. For nurses, the offer should be issued by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, or a publicly-funded health employer. Offers to other health professionals may come from either the two eligible employers for nurses or a health employer; these health professionals need to demonstrate that they are eligible to the licensure of the province where their occupation is regulated.
The Hospitality Sector Project accepts workers working in NOC 6513, NOC 6711, and NOC 6731. Other than meeting criteria that apply to all streams of the Saskatchewan Experience Category, completion of a minimum of grade-12 education is imposed on this stream. In addition, the employer must be an approved Saskatchewan Hospitality employer. Long-haul truck drivers through the Long-Haul Truck Driver Project must hold a valid 1A driver’s licence issued by the province. Their supporting employer must be a SINP-approved Saskatchewan trucking firm, and their work permit must be supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
The Students stream is open to Canadian post-secondary graduates. Applicants must hold a valid post-graduation work permit (PGWP) and have obtained six months of work experience in the province. Job offers must match their field of study. Paid work experience acquired during their study counts for graduates of the province, not for graduates of other provinces. Moreover, only work experience directly associated with their training will be considered for graduates from other provinces.
The Entrepreneur Category sets out the following minimum requirements for applicants: (1) have $500,000 in net worth; (2) invest $300,000 if the proposed business is either in Saskatoon or Regina, otherwise $200,000; (3) acquire three years of business management experience in the past ten years; and (4) create two full-time employment opportunities for Canadian citizens or permanent residents if the business location is in Saskatoon or Regina.
The Farmer Category restricts its access to farmers who plan to set up a farm in the province producing crops and livestock. Applicants should have farm operation knowledge and experience to operate the proposed farm. Other applicable criteria are; (1) a minimum of  $500,000 in net worth; (2) no less than five working days’ exploratory visit to the province; and (3) a $75,000 deposit. The net worth amount reduces to $300,000 for applicants younger than 40, but three other requirements get added to the stream: (1) applicants have three years’ experience in farm ownership, management, or experience; (2) the proposed farm is able to generate a minimum of $10,000 in annual revenue; and (3) applicants or their spouse possess adequate employment skills that may supplement their farming income.

This was the 4th MPNP draw of this month within the last 16 days. This draw was conducted for :
Skilled Workers of Manitoba
Skilled Workers Overseas

A total of 249 applicants were invited to apply out of which there were 155 LAAs for Skilled Workers in Manitoba with a minimum score of 771; while International Education Stream issued 46 LAAs with no mention of the minimum score. Whereas Skilled workers Overseas invited 48 applicants with a minimum score of 703 and 36 LAAs were issued to candidates who had valid Express Entry profile numbers and job seeker validation codes.

Important things to consider
1. Skilled workers' expressions of interest Foreign applicants have only been taken into account if they meet the following criteria: received a direct invitation from the MPNP as part of a Strategic Recruitment Initiative or possess a current Express Entry profile number and job seeker validation code.
2. If you haven't received a Letter of Advice to Apply despite having a score higher than the applicant with the lowest ranking, there are a few possible explanations.
Tumblr media
As you indicated in your EOI, you took an approved third-party language test to demonstrate your proficiency in English or French, but you failed to include a valid Test Number or the test has expired;
Get a free Canada assessment form
You indicated that you were invited to apply to the MPNP as part of a Strategic Recruitment Initiative, but you failed to include a valid Invitation Number.
Observe that there is help text accessible for every question in the EOI, offering thorough instructions on the data you must provide. You may want to amend your EOI with the relevant information if one of these situations applies to you to be considered for the upcoming draw from the EOI pool.
3. Candidates who stated they are employed in a regulated profession and have a valid Manitoba work permit were chosen in this draw. The MPNP reserves the right, however, to not accept or reject complete applications from candidates who are not genuinely employed in a regulated occupation and/or who do not present documentation proving they have completed all stages required for Manitoba employment licensure. If this applies to you, you might consider turning down your letter of recommendation to use.
International Education Stream
The International Education Stream (IES) for graduates of Manitoba is committed to offering international students graduating in Manitoba and addressing the demands of business with quicker nomination processes.
Three routes are available:
Career Employment Pathway
Graduate Internship Pathway
International Student Entrepreneur Pilot (ISEP)
Eligibility - Skilled Workers in Manitoba
A Manitoba business must have employed you full-time as a temporary foreign worker or international student working graduate for at least six consecutive months (consecutively) for which you have a valid work visa.
You might be eligible to apply for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program as a temporary foreign worker if you are successful in obtaining a temporary work permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program's Skilled Workers in Manitoba track is not evaluated based on points, in contrast to the other linkages to Manitoba in the program.
Eligibility - Skilled Workers Overseas
All applicants to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) applying to the Skilled Workers Overseas pathway must show they have a strong connection to Manitoba, either through the support of family or friends, through primary education or employment in the province, or through an Invitation to Apply they received directly from the MPNP as part of a Strategic Recruitment Initiative.
How to Apply
The paths under the International Education Stream and the Skilled Workers Stream both follow this procedure:
Creating an Expression of Interest (EOI) profile.
Those suitable applicants who have a connection to Manitoba and receive the highest scores will be given a Letter of Advice to Apply (LAA), which permits them to submit an MPNP application.
Applications are meticulously evaluated by an MPNP officer.
The MPNP proposes successful candidates.
Submit a separate application for visas to Canada's government within 180 days of the date of nomination for you and your family members.
Check whether you qualify for MPNP as your Canada Immigration Pathways! To get more details regarding Canada Permanent Residence you can give call to our Canada Immigration Experts.

Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, and BC hold PNP immigration draws this week
Tumblr media
Ontario invited over 1,500 skilled trades candidates and Saskatchewan issued over 1,700 invitations in two draws
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia have released results for their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) this week.
Most Canadian provinces and territories (with the exception of Quebec and Nunavut) operate their own PNPs. Through these programs, interested candidates may be invited to apply for a provincial nomination. Although provincial nomination is not in itself the same as a permanent residence, it can act as the first step towards obtaining permanent resident status for eligible candidates by maximizing your CRS score.
For instance, PNP candidates with Express Entry profiles who receive a nomination get 600 points added to their score. They also become eligible to be invited to apply for a PNP-specific round of invitations.
Following its launch in 1998, the PNP welcomed only 400 immigrants, but due to its success, it now welcomes more than 80,000 per year. The increase in the number of PNP admissions in Canada is due to the fact that the federal and provincial governments consider it an effective tool to promote the economic development of the country.
Discover if You Are Eligible for Canadian Immigration
PNP draw results September 2-8
Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan invited a total of 1,703 candidates over two days on September 6 and 7, nearly doubling the number of candidates invited on the previous draw on September 1, which was the largest draw of 2022.
On September 6, Saskatchewan held targeted draws for a variety of NOC occupations in demand and through the Express Entry system. There were two draws in each category, totaling 760 candidates, due to different minimum scores. Some targeted NOC’s required minimum scores of 61 and others needed a score of 69.
The September 7 draw invited 521 candidates through Express Entry and 422 through the Occupations-In-Demand stream for a total of 943 candidates with a minimum score of 70 for both categories.
These latest draws continue Saskatchewan’s trend of inviting more candidates each week. Until July of this year, Saskatchewan held draws approximately every two months and, even pre-pandemic, totals seldom exceeded 500 candidates per draw.
Ontario
On September 7 Ontario held a draw under the Skilled Trades Stream of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The province invited 1,521 candidates to apply with minimum scores of 320 and above.  This stream is aligned with Express Entry, meaning invited candidates receive additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points and an Invitation To Apply (ITA) for permanent residence at a future draw from the Express Entry pool.
British Columbia
British Columbia invited more than 369 candidates to apply for provincial nomination on September 7. BC typically holds a provincial nomination draw each week.
Most candidates, 361, were invited in a regional, targeted draw for tech occupations. In this regional draw, invitations were only issued to candidates with job offers outside Metro Vancouver Regional District. Candidates may also have been invited based on other criteria such as:
Education – level and field of education and where it was completed
Language skills
Occupation
Duration and skill level of work experience
Wage and/or skill level of job offer
Intent to live, work and settle in a specific region
Strategic priorities – factors that address specific labour market needs in B.C. or support government pilot projects and initiatives
The invitations were issued to candidates in the Skilled Worker and International Graduates categories and included Express Entry candidates. The draw also included Entry Level and Semi-Skilled candidates.
The minimum SIRS score for the targeted regional draw ranged between 95 for Skilled Workers with Express Entry to 71 for Entry Level and Semi-Skilled candidates. SIRS acts much like the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) but is only used for British Columbia’s PNP.
The province also held rounds of invitations for candidates working in the following occupations:
8 early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 4214) with scores of at least 60 points.
Healthcare workers with scores of at least 60 points.
Manitoba
Manitoba held its most recent PNP draw on September 8 and issued 278 invitations through the Manitoba Provincial Nomination Program.
The invitations were divided across three immigration streams:
Skilled Workers in Manitoba issued 217 invitations with a minimum score of 616
Skilled Workers Overseas issued 20 invitations with a minimum score of 703
International Education Stream issued 41 invitations with no score requirement.

#53?
(here you go, this took way too long to write and I don't like it much but oh well)
53, There are worse ways to die
November 11th 1917 passchendaele.
“There are worse ways to die.”
Matthew wished that he had stayed dead. The dark abyss swallowed your conscience, wrapped you in a blanket of nothing. Nothing to think about or feel, no pain. A chance to actually rest instead of fleeting moments when both sides were holding their breath. He should try and die more. He could escape the disappointed look Father was most definitely giving him right now; how embarrassing.
“Private, are you listing to me?”
The accent that usually brought comfort brought dread. It was muffled and sounded so far away yet right beside him from a shell that had gone off near him. And the mud, God, he hoped it was mud this time packed into crevices of his inner ear he wouldn’t know existed if it wasn’t for his boys;(1) and not a concoction of rotting flesh and blood of children. Whatever it was, he needed it out.
"If you can't look me in the eyes or acknowledge me, at least tell me how long I wasted looking for you."
"Lost count at five." Gunk and mire fell from the boy's mouth as he dislodged his throat to speak. It coated every inch of his esophagus, and he wasn't sure if the blood that pooled in his lungs was his own or someone else's he was lucky enough to partake in.
"Five-, dear lord boy, last time Jack heard of you was almost two weeks ago. I have been digging for three days." Matthew hadn't the strength to open his eyes, but he could hear the waver in the man's voice. "Look at me when your superiors are talking to you."
He expected it to be blinding like it usually was when one was resurrected. The sun having no mercy for those who are dead or those who should be. Matthew wondered if the sun had died too. Why would it stay if the world which it kept alive was killing itself? If it came, nothing would be living at the end of the war. Arthur looked like he had been crying. Eyes red and watery, but that could just be a lack of sleep. He never slept enough for Matthews liking. A pinch of annoyance at his caretaker clouded his thoughts. Three days were spent looking for him when England should have been sleeping. Why on earth would he spend three days digging for a useless dominion when he could have been gathering strength. Cursing himself, Matthew rolled onto his side to throw up more bloody mud. If only he tried harder to hold on to the duckboards, father wouldn't have bloodshot eyes.
"Jack?"
The British man was now kneeling beside the Canadian, supporting him into a seated position and pounded on the boy's back, encouraging coughing. Arthur reminisced when he would do this with a much smaller and helpless colony after Canada would tumble into a river or lake. Sitting on uneven planks of wood, soaked and shivering, coughing up dirt, he was a pitiful sight. But it was still the same colony, just taller now and not so helpless.
"The lad's alright. Managed to convince the nurses to keep his rat."
"His rat?"
"James did not write anything else regarding the matter." (2)
Satisfied that his younger siblings seemed okay enough, he opted to stay quiet. Quiet, it was quiet. For the first time, Matthew took in his surroundings. The fields looked the same, still Sludge and grime waiting to swallow up anything that came in its path. It was hungry, starving and ate everything like it was the only thing that could bring back the grass and crops. Mines, shells, shoes, people, the same boards that kept the people out of the mud. There was no escaping it. In the chaos that was war, Canada was focused on his people, his boys. Thomas, a fourteen-year-old boy from Manitoba, was injured and starving. Thomas didn't tell anyone that he was hungry, but Matthew knew. It was a curse, being able to look at your citizen and know that they had two sisters, a mother who missed him and that he had not eaten in four days because he was so anxious. Canada got out his rations and sat the boy down, giving him some corned beef; he reached for his canteen and fell. The fields of Belgium were ruthless, and Matthew was tired. Thomas was brave and tried so hard to pull his nation back up out of the mud. It was no use. Matthew was stuck in the ground, drowned by the next bugle sound.
"It was."
Arthur turned and gave him a tired look.
"It was the worst way to die."
"Let's get some food into you." England clapped Canada's back, pulling him up, then took his shovel. "You're too dramatic for your own good."
"No, I-" Matthew stumbled, taking his first step in days. Mud squelched between his toes. It was the same consistency as the mucus in his lungs. Biting back frustrated tears, he took two more steps before falling to his knees. He wished he could die from embarrassment. Here he was, The empire's most trusted spearhead, and he couldn't even walk two steps. It was utterly pathetic and unacceptable. The whereabouts of his rifle were even unknown. Don't cry, don't cry; it's not helpful; why would anyone want the help of someone who cried all the time. Don't cry, don't fucking cry.
"Private, look at me." (3)
He couldn't. The shame was too much and the world too loud; why weren't they being shot at? Where were his boys?
"Private Williams"
He abandoned them, oh no. the one thing he always strived not to do; he knew what it was like to be abandoned now he did it to his boys.
"Matthew Williams, I am talking to you."
Thomas, that poor kid, He had to witness his nation die, and oh, he tried, that boy did all he could, but it didn't matter. Matthew felt sick. How could he let that happen to Thomas? The boy didn't know that Matthew was his nation; of course not. But they always felt drawn to their presence. How could Canada torment that poor boy's soul like that?
"Breath, lad, there you go. Everything is alright. You've been dead for a while I take it." Arthur pulled the dominion closer to him and offered his rum ration. Everything wasn't okay, but there was no way England could get Canada back to headquarters to make it as okay as it could be if he was like this.
"Dad?" The soft voice made Arthur's breath catch in his throat. That was the voice of a child who was too good at war for his own good. The child who quietly stayed by his side and never complained. The child who is so fiercely loyal it was suffocating. It was the voice of his child who was born into a world of war. He shouldn't be here; he should be in that god damn cold land of his writing letters to his siblings. What a Horrible world they created where children had to go to war.
"What is it Matthew?"
"Where are they? My men. I abandoned them I-" he swallowed thickly, the rum burning his mangled throat. "Are they okay? is Thomas-"
"What day do you last remember?" Arthur had a sinking feeling his son had been continuously drowning for longer than he thought.
"October 28th was the last day I saw my men." The silence was deafening. Arthur almost cried. That was fourteen days ago. His child had been drowning and repeatedly dying for fourteen days.
"Matthew, October 28th was fourteen days ago. The battles over we won." He didn't have the heart to tell him that it was worthless. "Your men are remarkable."
"Where are they?"
"Resting for a bit, I suppose. Ignoring their superiors and ruining their uniforms." He managed to get a small smile out of Canada. "I swear I'm at war with them more than I am the krauts." (4)
Matthew drank the last bit of rum. Already feeling the effects of warmth. Wiggling his toes, he decided to walk and slowly stood his way up.
"Oh no, you're not lad; you have been decaying for fourteen days. I do not trust those limbs to hold you." Bending down, he offered his back to the stunned boy. "Get on. I want to have a shower, and you kept me from my tea long enough."
Matthew realized just how tired he was, and though he should have refused, his arms wrapped themselves around the man's neck just like he used to when he was smaller.
"Good heavens, boy, you've outgrown your uniform again. I swear you're going to be as tall as Alfred one day. Speaking of which, he asked about you, worried, I think. Don't fret though, lad I told him you are the best fighter anyone could have on their side, you and your men, always loyal and ready-"
"Dad." Matthew cut him off, embarrassed from the praise and from being carried. "Thank you for finding me." Arthurs's shoulders relaxed a bit. A slight quirk of his lips got rid of the worried look on his face.
"Of course, where would we be without you?"
Canadian soldiers, especially French Canadians, were known to take the ears and noses of those captured and killed during trench raids to show their accomplishment.
Jack is Australia and James is New Zealand. They were both also at the battle of Passchendaele.
Private is the lowest rank among British soldiers. (Canada was British then). I think Matthew had the option of ranking up but never accepted it because he wanted to be like most of his men.
Canadians in ww1 were kinda hated by the British. Canadians were known to ignore the British superiors and the rules they set out to know their friends or have fun. They often tore off their rank slide (which showed their rank and job) because they didn't want the responsibility or follow the many British rules.

DAY OF WHIMSY THUNDER BAY WATERFRONT.
There’s a lot to take in. Colours of the rainbow, fireworks, hot-air balloons, rocket ship launch, high-flying jet plane, monarch butterflies all a flutter, bald eagle and floating lanterns. If deemed not enough search for the effervescent moon, and beneath Lake Superior’s surface never-seen-before pod of dolphins, humpback whale, manta ray, and scuba divers. There’s a merchant ship adjacent to the Sleeping Giant where a murder of crows fly, along with the TBay lighthouse and lightning over the iconic former Manitoba Pool 2 grain elevators.
INSPIRATION.
Yes, there’s elements of illustration. What started as a panoramic photograph took to life as a DAY OF WHIMSY. During a late afternoon last year when summer changes to autumn, a rainbow presented itself over the Thunder Bay waterfront. Just for a few beautiful minutes. It was long enough for me to hastily capture it.
Today, with summer fully upon us, Thunder Bay locals and beyond are embracing the sunshine, arts, cultural events and night outs of all kinds. For two plus years the pandemic kept social activities to a bare minimum. Now there’s music festivals. Beer festivals. Art festivals. Car shows. And, more. Not to mention all the access to nature northern Ontario offers en masse.
What a time to be alive!
ONE OF A KIND.
DAY OF WHIMSY is the first picture of its kind I’ve created; it may or may not be the last. But it’ll always be the first. I’ll be offering a limited number of reproductions. Details to follow.
I hope you enjoy DAY OF WHIMSY. I enjoyed creating it. Even if you haven’t visited Thunder Bay, the scene isn’t only a fun celebration of the city’s waterfront, but more so a tip of the hat to the kid in us all.
Here’s to fun in the sun, and original art work out of left field. See you next time.
Order details for a one-of-a-kind gallery-wrapped canvas of DAY OF WHIMSY.

Apply for your Canada PR Process with us - Aptech Visa
Indian immigrants have often concentrated their efforts on the US and the UK when it comes to travelling overseas and pursuing an education. Canada has become a well-liked choice for candidates during the past ten years.
In comparison to other Western nations, Canada has lower living and education costs. In addition, immigration regulations in Canada are more lenient than in the US and UK. These are the main arguments for choosing Canada over other nations, particularly when applying for a PR Visa.
Three well-liked methods for navigating the Canada PR procedure.
Three tried-and-true ways to enter Canada and obtain a PR Visa are as follows:
The Express Entry System
The Provincial Nominee Program
Family Sponsorship
They are elaborated on below.
1.  Express Entry
Aspiring immigrants might consider using the Express Entry System. This is due to two factors: applicants do not require a work offer in order to be eligible for this visa, and the processing period is extremely short. This approach, which aims to make the immigration procedure quick and simple for newcomers, is relatively new.
Under the Express Entry System, there are 3 programs:
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Canadian Experience Class
2. The Program for Provincial Nominees
Since there aren't many people in Canada, this initiative concentrates on bringing in qualified immigrants to close the skills gap in the labour market. Your line of work must be in demand to qualify. A provincial nomination is very valuable and ensures that your CRS score will receive at least 600 points.
GET A FREE CANADA ASSESSMENT FORM
If you choose the Provincial Nomination Program, your application could be handled more quickly. If you choose to apply through Express Entry and also indicate that you are interested in moving to a certain province, they will be able to choose your profile from a pool of other candidates. You will complete the task more quickly and get more points simultaneously.
Tumblr media
The provinces that provide this facility and the titles of their programs are as follows:
Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program
British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program
Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program
Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program
New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program
Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program
Northwest Territories Nominee Program
Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program
Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program
Quebec Skilled Workers Program
Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program
Yukon Nominee Program
Also, read: Provinces to have more control in Canada Immigration?
3. Visa for Family Sponsorship
You can sponsor a family member (spouse, relative, parent, grandparent, dependant) to live and work in Canada if you are a permanent resident of Canada over the age of 18.
Under this program, there are 4 streams:
Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorships
Child or Other Dependent Sponsorship
Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship
Super Visa
Eligibility for permanent residence in Canada
The requirements for eligibility are as follows:
If your score is 67 or above on a scale of 100, you are eligible. They emphasize the following factors:
Language skills- 28 points
Education- 25 points
Work Experience- 15 points
Age- 12 points
Offer of Employment- 10 points
Adaptability- 10 points
You ought to choose a career that is in demand in Canada.
You must be fluent in both English and, to some extent, French, depending on where you are in Canada. Your speaking, reading, writing, and listening abilities will be evaluated. Immigration and Citizenship Canada must approve the test. A reliable exam to demonstrate English ability is IELTS.
You must demonstrate that you have the resources to sustain yourself while you are in Canada.
There is no maximum age, although candidates between the ages of 18 and 35 are probably going to score the highest.
The Canadian Education Board must accept your educational credentials.
You need to have enough pertinent job experience. Full-time, salaried employment is the most reliable.
Your profession must fall within the National Occupational Classification's Skill Type 0 or Skill Level A or B categories.
Although it is not required, having a job offer from a Canadian firm is advised since you will earn more points in this method.
Additionally, keep in mind that if your spouse is with you, their score will have an impact on your own.
