Lee Moran at HuffPost:
Kellyanne Conway was accused of spreading “alternative facts” once again with her commentary on Donald Trump’s visit to a church in Detroit over the weekend. “You got Donald Trump in Detroit talking to 8,000 people at a Black church,” Conway boasted to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo. Conway managed Trump’s 2016 campaign and later served as his White House counselor. She was seeking to highlight what she claimed is a vast difference in support for the presumptive GOP nominee over President Joe Biden in the upcoming 2024 election. But videos from the event at 180 Church that were shared online showed the audience was perhaps only in the hundreds.
And as Reuters noted: “While some fervent, MAGA cap-adorned supporters waited for hours to get in, the line numbered in the hundreds, not thousands, and some attendees said they had just happened upon the scene by chance. As the event began, the church was not at capacity.”
Kellyanne Conway busted in yet another lie.

Ooff… even in their early days as a couple after just graduating high school, Frank & Maria Castle’s relationship was already beginning to show cracks!
Not only was Frank engaging in murderous acts of vigilante justice behind Maria’s back like when he targeted his old classmates who got his friend Steadman Sternberger killed in a drunk driving accident, but Frank abandons Maria immediately after she tells him he’s pregnant by joining the marines as an outlet for his anger & bloodlust (which he similarly did with hockey back in school) and gives zero reaction to his wife’s news, and 8 months later after returning from boot camp Frank doesn’t even say goodbye to Maria when he’s deployed into active service.

Jason Aaron has honestly done a phenomenal job so far in this maxiseries at highlighting how even long before officially becoming the Punisher, Frank Castle was always a deeply unstable and emotionally disconnected individual who hungers for violence, always hiding behind the convenient excuse of “enacting justice against evil doers” (even long before his wife and two children were infamously gunned down in the park during a mob shoot-out). The far-right scumbags IRL who constantly glorify the Punisher as a “hero” and claim that Aaron “emasculated and ruined the Punisher” with this series seem to forget that Frank Castle was originally envisioned back in the 1970s by writer Gerry Conway as a cautionary tale about the dangers of toxic masculinity and vigilante justice, as well as the failures of a corrupt neoliberal capitalistic society which produces monsters like Castle. All Aaron did was bring those monstrous traits that the Punisher has ALWAYS represented boiling up to the surface.

THE ANGEL PROBLEM ft. OPALITE ( ficswap for @eternalit ! )
"The Angel and the Devil play their game on an infinite chessboard... The Devil wins if he can strand the Angel... The Angel wins just if he can continue to move forever." — "The Angel Problem," John H Conway "We have given a strategy for the Angel of power 2 such that the imaginary green line never reaches the x axis again, and thus the Angel never paints the same wall again (Proposition 4.3). Since in a bounded domain there are only routes of finite length where the green line could go, obviously the green line will leave every bounded domain—hence the Angel also will leave every bounded domain, however the Nice Devil plays. Thus ... we immediately obtain the following. Theorem 4.6. The Angel of power 2 can defeat the Devil." — "The Angel of power 2 wins," András Máthé "Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the Angels' Orders? and even if one of them pressed me suddenly to his heart: I'd be consumed in his more potent being." — "The First Elegy," Rainer Maria Rilke

The Wertheimer Portraits
A retexture by La Comtesse Zouboff — Original Mesh by @thejim07
The Wertheimer portraits are a series of twelve portrait paintings made by John Singer Sargent of and for the British art dealer Asher Wertheimer and his family. The series amounts to Sargent's largest private commission.
The family became close friends of the artist John Singer Sargent. He often dined at their home at 8 Connaught Place, where the dining room (sometimes described as "Sargent's mess" ) was decorated with eight of the family portraits. Mr and Mrs Wertheimer commissioned Singer Sargent to paint two portraits to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1898, and ten more commissions followed in the next decade. Most of the portraits hang in the Tate Museum in London, after Wertheimer's death in 1918. The donation was an scandal, as some antisemitic comments emerged, such as that of the historian Sir Charles Oman: "these clever, but extremely repulsive, pictures should be placed in a special chamber of horrors".
The bequest and wish for the portraits to be displayed together was seen as a distasteful display of wealth with opponents claiming it was Jewish excess and asking “Is there any other gallery that has been given so many paintings?
Since the paintings would hang among royalty, clergy and historical figures, to have a room dedicated to one family deemed outside the British establishment was so controversial that it was debated in Parliament.
Nowadays, the portraits are regarded as masterpieces, and most of the antisemitic comments remained in the past, but some critics have thought that the paintings "exudes caricature-like features and projected racial stereotypes onto the sitters" although the family was perfectly happy with them (of course this wouldn't have been issue if the family belonged to catholicism or other western-predominant religion)
This set contains 12 portraits, with the original frame swatches, fully recolourable. They are of:
Elizabeth "Betty" Wertheimer, Mrs. Euston Abraham Salaman (oval shape)
Flora Wertheimer (née Joseph) Mrs. Asher Wertheimer
Helena "Ena" Wertheimer, Mrs. Robert Moritz Mathias, "A Vele Gonfle"
Madame Asher Wertheimer (née Flora Joseph) (another portrait of Flora)
Miss Almina Wertheimer in Turquerie Costume.
Mr. Alfred Wertheimer
Edward Wertheimer (unfinished)
Asher Wertheimer with his Poodle, Noble.
Elizabeth "Betty" and Helena "Ena" Wertheimer.
Hylda, Conway and Almina Wertheimer.
Miss Hylda Wertheimer.
Ruby, Ferdinand and Essie Wertheimer.

Trump lies constantly and so do his craven lickspittles.
The very first lies of the Trump administration involved inflating crowd size at his 20 January 2017 inauguration.
Kellyanne Conway continues the Trump tradition of inflationary crowd numbers.
Kellyanne Conway tried to draw some distinction between Donald Trump and Joe Biden during an appearance on Maria Bartiromo’s Sunday Morning Futures, noting that Trump was making outreaches to Black voters. “You got Donald Trump in Detroit talking to 8,000 people at a Black church,” she told Bartiromo. However, what Conway failed to note was that Trump did not speak to 8,000 people nor was the majority of the crowd Black when Trump spoke at 180 Church in Detroit on Saturday.
I went to Google Maps and and looked up 13660 Stansbury Avenue in Detroit - the address of the church. Using satellite view and Google's instrument for measuring distance, I measured the exterior of the building which was roughly 160' X 93' or 14,880 square feet. For comparison, a college basketball court is 94' X 50' or 4,700 square feet.
Here's the front of the 180 Church. It's no megachurch., perhaps 8 car lengths wide.
Tumblr media
Kellyanne Conway is asking us to believe that 8,000 people were squeezed into an area the size of 3 basketball courts. Keep in mind that my calculation of 14,800 sq. ft. covers the whole building, not just the church sanctuary where Trump ranted. There are offices, presumably classrooms for Sunday school, a foyer, hallways, storage areas, and bathrooms.
Of course, being an attendee at a Trump event at a "Black church" does not necessarily make you Black.
A Reuters report noted that the crowd was a diverse mixture of white and Black attendees and “numbered in the hundreds, not thousands, and some attendees said they had just happened upon the scene by chance.” The report also said that the event was not at capacity once it started.
The MAGA zombies are impervious to factual reality, so they'll believe that there were 15,000,000 people there if told that by the Trump Mendacity-Industrial Complex. But calling out bullshit by Trumpsters can have a cumulative effect on people who aren't hardcore Trump cultists.
Somebody who has more time than me should devote a blog to actual crowd sizes at Trump events.

July Books
I can't remember when I last did one of these but as I ended up reading a lot this month, here it is! Bolded are my favourites.
Saturnalia - Stephanie Feldman: a near-future alchemical horror? thriller? in which a former fortune-teller who was ousted from an occultist club gets dragged into her old life. I happened to spot this in the library and enjoyed it quite a bit.
Nothing But Blackened Teeth - Cassandra Khaw: a horror novella about rich young people going to a haunted manor house for a wedding, badness ensues. I liked the messy relationships in this and some of the horror elements, but there were some quippy moments that weren't so much my thing: I felt they undercut the tension in a less-fun way.
Vivi Conway and the Haunted Quest - Lizzie Huxley-Jones: second in an adorable kids' series based on Welsh mythology. I loved the first one and enjoyed this one more: it felt tighter and more driven as Vivi has embraced her magical connection to Nimue and the group of pals is a solid team. Lots of good creepy moments and lovely straightforward moments showing and discussing disability, neurodivergence, and queerness. Perfect for kids (I read it to my child for bedtime); a cute read for adults too.
Nevada - Imogen Binnie: weird that this is known as a classic trans book when it's only 11 years old, but that's a whole other thing. Maria is a trans woman in Brooklyn who's perhaps too online for her own good and struggling with her relationships and workplace. She heads out on an unwise road trip. I liked this a lot: it's very much a book about messy early-20s screwups and it felt very human.
Gender Failure - Ivan E Coyote and Rae Spoon: memoirs from two performers about growing up and transitioning. I enjoyed learning more about the authors (I wasn't familiar with them before) but the choppy style was a bit too choppy for my liking and resulted in some repetitiveness in phrasing/subject that could have been smoothed out a bit.
Boys Weekend - Mattie Lubchansky: a graphic novel about Sammie, a transfem nonbinary artist's assistant who attends a stag weekend with their techbro friends on a libertarian-paradise island on which sinister techbro cults are lurking. I enjoyed this a great deal, it was very funny in places, and pretty heartbreaking in others.
Small Beauty - jia qing wilson-yang: a Canadian trans woman is grieving her cousin, and moves into his old, remote house on the edge of a small town while learning more about their family and loved ones, as well as herself. It's an unassuming sort of book, but it packs a punch and stands up for itself. The magical realist moments were lovely. I keep thinking about it every so often: it was pretty lovely, and moving.
Cuckoo - Gretchen Felker-Martin: queer teenagers in the 90s go through the harrowing experience of a wilderness conversion camp, while also trying to escape an entity that wears their skin, returns to the outside world as "perfect" teens, and infests others. This was a really tough read thanks to the intense, ongoing abuse the characters suffer and the unflinchingly awful horror scenes. I couldn't put it down.
Darryl - Jackie Ess: this dramedy? tragicomedy? was a nice palate cleanser after the intensity of Cuckoo. Darryl's a bit of a sad sack in his forties, despite his easy trust-fund lifestyle his life has become stagnant and he's exploring being cuckolded, his own queerness, and the BDSM scene. I just loved Darryl's voice in this: he's such an anxious doofus and I couldn't help but enjoy how silly he, and a lot of the story, was while also having genuine moments of emotion and compassion.
