Sicily and Malta: two incredible destinations to discover during your boat itinerary!
Sicily and Malta are two top destinations of European tourism during the summer period. Find out in this article how to combine both of these destinations into a single unmissable experience onboard a rental boat:
CONTACT US FOR YOUR CHARTER IN SICILY AND MALTA
Why sail from Syracuse? How to reach this marina?
For our boat holiday, we choose to sail from Syracuse, a city in eastern Sicily overlooking the Ionian Sea, rich in history and culture. An authentic architectural gem that deserves to be visited.
Syracuse is easily accessible by air. Catania’s “Vincenzo Bellini” Fontanarossa International Airport is only 45 minutes by car from the city center.
Marina Yachting in Syracuse, also known as “Porto Grande” is instead the perfect port to set sail for our itinerary. In addition to offering excellent service in terms of customer support, Marina Yachting in Syracuse is able to accommodate up to 180 boats up to 35 meters in length and a maximum draft of 5 meters.
What could be a possible boat itinerary from Sicily to Malta?
The best 7 days sailing itinerary in Sicily and Malta departing from Syracuse is: – Day 1 – Syracuse – Day 2 – Calamosche and Noto – Day 3 – Marzamemi – Day 4 – Malta, visiting the Golden Bay – Day 5 – Gozo and Ramla Beach – Day 6 – Comino and the Blue Lagoon – Day 7 – Back to Sicily and disembark in Syracuse
{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [ { "@type": "Question", "name": "What could be a possible boat itinerary from Sicily to Malta?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": " The best 7 days sailing itinerary in Sicily and Malta departing from Syracuse is: – Day 1 – Syracuse – Day 2 – Calamosche and Noto – Day 3 – Marzamemi – Day 4 – Malta, visiting the Golden Bay – Day 5 – Gozo and Ramla Beach – Day 6 – Comino and the Blue Lagoon – Day 7 – Back to Sicily and disembark in Syracuse " } } ] }
Why choose Malta as a boat trip destination?
The Maltese Republic is an archipelago made up of two major islands, Malta and Gozo, and a third smaller island, Comino.
There are numerous beaches and even more coves where you can stop and spend the day between a dip and a sunbath. Among the most famous we certainly find the “blue lagoon” beach on Comino island, Ramla Bay on Gozo, and the Golden Bay on the island of Malta.
This small country, however, is not only suitable for those in search of sun, sand, and tan but also lends itself to cultural tourism. There are numerous historical places of interest, starting from the capital, Valletta, famous for its medieval walls from which it also takes the name of city-fortress.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN SICILY
Made up of a multitude of narrow streets, its medieval historic center preserves intact the characteristic signs of that historical period and this is why it has been named a UNESCO heritage site.
Floating quickly on the waves of the sea with your boat, we recommend you to discover the impressive Gozo megalithic temples and the site of Hal Saflieni, famous to be the only underground prehistoric temple in the world.
In our opinion, the best way to experience all the nuances that this archipelago offers its visitors is through a boat trip. In fact, Malta and its natural beauties lend themselves perfectly to be discovered one after the other floating quickly on the sea.
What are the main marinas in Malta?
Malta seems tailor-made for sailing and navigation lovers, not only because it is rich in natural bays and inlets but also, and above all for the large number of marinas that the island offers to its yachtsmen.
The bay that protects Valletta is in fact a large port area where there are some of the best-equipped marinas in the Mediterranean Sea that can accommodate even large boats. Among these we mention the Grand Harbor Marina, located near the Sant’Elmo lighthouse, it offers 240 berths and can accommodate boats up to 135 meters in length and 5 meters of draft.
Roland Marina, on the other hand, is located in the Ta ‘Xbiex stream inside the protected port of Marsamxetto, it offers a full service open 24 hours and has 150 berths available for yachts up to 32 meters in length and draft up to 10 meters.
Finally, we point out the Manoel Island Yacht Marina, located on the southern coast of Manoel small island and is capable of hosting 300 boats up to 80 meters in length and 18 meters of draft.
What could be a possible 7-day itinerary from Sicily to Malta?
At Your Boat Holiday, we specialize in preparing and managing itineraries tailored to our customer’s requests and preferences. What you see below is just one of the many possible itineraries that our company usually organizes between Sicily and Malta islands:
Day 1: Syracuse
After making acquaintance with the crew, we set sail from the Syracuse marina heading south. We spend the first hours on the boat to acclimatize, between a welcome cocktail and a few dives off the Sicilian coast.
Day 2: Calamosche and Noto
We begin the actual navigation arriving in the first of the two Sicilian destinations where we will stop during the approach march to Malta: we will have the opportunity to visit the beach of Calamosche and the nearby town of Noto, famous all over the world for its Baroque architecture declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Day 3: Marzamemi
The following day we head to Marzamemi, our second and last appointment with the Sicilian beauties. Considered one of the most typical villages of eastern Sicily, Marzamemi is an ancient fishing village that has now become a destination for tourists in search of its picturesque and colorful places.
Day 4: Valletta, in Malta, and the Golden Bay
We finally arrive on the Republic of Malta main island. Here we are spoiled for choice on how to spend the day. A visit to the capital, Valletta, can be a good way to spend the morning, walking along its ramparts and savoring some Maltese culinary tradition typical dishes for lunch.
In the afternoon we will instead sail to the northwest coast to reach the beautiful Golden Bay and its magnificent beach.
Day 5: Gozo
The following day we move north to the second-largest island of this small nation, Gozo. Here we spend the day looking for the best beaches and bays in which to drop anchor for a dip in the sea. Among the many, we certainly cannot give up a visit to Ramla beach.
Day 6: Comino
We end our adventure in Malta by visiting an authentic natural wonder located on the island of Comino, the smallest of the Maltese archipelago. We are talking about the Blue Lagoon, a stretch of sea with various shades ranging from blue to turquoise, home to many marine species such as dolphins and sea lions.
Day 7: Back to Sicily to disembark and enjoy your relaxing last day in Syracuse;

* Shroud Cay - The Shroud cay can be an experience like no other. It is a series of several smaller cays that are joined together by creeks. The cays are all surrounded by several waterways here which can only be explored through a boat or a yacht.
* Wardrick Wells - The Wardrick wells is the ideal place for nature lovers. The Island is rich in local flora and fauna and there are plenty of hiking trails on the island to explore it. The waters here are very clear, perfect for snorkeling.

Filming in New York: In, On and Under the Water
More film productions are shooting on the water in New York State, and for good reason—there’s lots of it: more than 7,600 freshwater lakes, ponds and reservoirs; 1,600 miles of Long Island coastline; and 315 miles of Hudson River shoreline. And there’s more, including the Erie Canal, two Great Lakes, 2,000 waterfalls and cascades in pristine natural settings Upstate. New York’s plentiful water locations, plus the state’s deep pool of talent, production resources and film tax credits have all contributed to a rise in seaside (riverside and lakeside) shoots.
Tumblr media
“Filming on the water, like filming in general, has grown so much in New York over the past several years,” says Chris Barnes, owner of The Stunt Dept. Inc. and a marine coordinator for productions that include Elementary, Pose, Blue Bloods, The Deuce, Ray Donovan and Law & Order:  SVU.  “I used to get calls for filming on, in or around the water maybe once a month. Now I get a call a week,” says Barnes, an industry veteran of more than 25 years. “That’s good not just for me and my company, but for all the other people—divers, boat captains, boat rental companies, support people—we hire to work with us on those shoots.”
For the new Starz series Hightown, about a National Fisheries Service agent on Cape Cod who gets caught up in a major drug conspiracy, New York State doubles almost entirely for the series’ Massachusetts setting. Barnes says the village docks and marinas of Westchester and Long Island can match the look of Cape Cod, and he can aim the camera out on Long Island Sound to make it look like the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. With scenes on or around the water in all eight episodes of the show, now in post-production, Barnes had to call on his extensive list of contacts for everything from securing live lobsters in bulk to renting camera barges and commercial fishing boats. “I pull together a lot of experienced captains, divers, boat owners and suppliers on these shoots,” he says. “The last shoot day on the water, I hired two local dive shop owners, two local commercial fishermen along with their boats, a dock building company and their barges, and one local marine mechanic. Filming on water brings business to a lot people who might not ordinarily think of themselves as being in the movie industry.”
Barnes described another recent shoot in Upper Manhattan involving 60 dancers doing a choreographed routine while standing waist-deep in a pool for the Warner Bros. film adaptation of the hit musical In the Heights. “It wasn’t quite the Atlantic Ocean,” Barnes says. “But anytime you’re putting people in the water, you’ve got to have trained safety people on hand.”
Another on-the-water New York location is the 100-year-old yacht Ventura, a cutter rig sloop berthed in downtown Manhattan’s North Cove Marina that is mostly hired out for charters and corporate events. Owner-partner James Brooks of Sail New York says the yacht recently hosted filming of an episode of the CBS show God Friended Me and hopes to bring aboard even more film and television shoots. Ventura is also a favorite backdrop for promotional videos, photo shoots and TV broadcasts, including those for Harper’s Bazaar, Adidas, Nautica, Brooks Brothers, Macy's and ABC's Good Morning America.
The Coast Guard gets about 10 to 15 film requests a year for film shoots in New York Harbor or on commercially navigable waterways like the Hudson River, says Petty Officer First Class Ronald Sampert.  Those projects range from features like Sully (Warner Bros.), starring Tom Hanks, which to recreate American Airlines Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s 2009 emergency landing of plane on the Hudson River required a floating airplane set and had actors swimming in the Hudson off midtown Manhattan. The indie film Crypto involved throwing a “body” off a tugboat moored under the Walkway Over the Hudson bridge, which is a New York State park.  “We needed a permit from parks to attach lights to the bridge,” says Crypto Unit Production Manager Brian Papworth. “We had three boats on the water—the tugboat, a camera boat, and a chase boat with safety crew—so we needed a permit from the Coast Guard. Ulster County police had jurisdiction over the shoreline—bottom line it involved several different agencies, but it was all reasonable and with help from the state and local film offices, we got it done.”
Regardless of the production or scene-setting specifics, film and television producers know that New York State’s abundant watery locations, experienced crew, unmatched resources and incentives make it a great place to make waves in front of—or behind—the camera.

Essex, Conn.: A Small Town Where History Lives On
Before moving into their Federal-era home in the river town of Essex, Conn., Pam and Tom Carroll demolished an addition in back and gutted the interior. The three-bedroom house, for which they paid $500,000, fronts Main Street in Essex Village and has backyard views of a cove off the Connecticut River. But it was in “sorry shape” when they bought it, said Ms. Carroll, 57, an interior designer.
The renovation took a year, and the Carrolls frequently drove up from their home in Southport to check on the project. But it wasn’t until after they moved in, in 2017, that they realized their neighbors on and around Main Street had been watching the construction with more than passing interest.
“They say they just hold their breath when any of the historic houses on Main Street change hands, because really there’s nothing on the books that makes it a historic district that says what you can and cannot do,” Ms. Carroll said.
Essex is known for its old New England Main Street, lined with homes dating to the town’s heyday as a bustling center for shipbuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. The street ends at the town dock on the banks of the Connecticut River, which flows down from Canada, through four states, and into the Long Island Sound.
The Carrolls’ home still fits right in — they kept the original front facade intact. And they’ve quickly found community by joining the Essex Yacht Club, a short walk from Main Street.
“Essex is a really good location for boating: It’s very protected because we’re up the river a little ways from the storms,” Ms. Carroll said. “But it is so easily accessible to zip right down to Long Island Sound, and a super easy run over to Shelter Island, Sag Harbor and the Hamptons. On the river, there’s Hamburg Cove, just opposite Essex. People go in there and drop anchor, hang out and barbecue, paddleboard.”
Nancy Tela is hoping to take crewing lessons now that she owns a home in the village. A real estate broker in Manhattan, Ms. Tela grew up boating and is familiar with much of the Connecticut coastline. But she only recently began exploring Essex as a possible remote-work getaway when a “quirky” three-bedroom house with river views came on the market last winter. She dashed up to the open house.
“It was kind of perfect,” Ms. Tela said. “It just clicked.”
She closed in May for $600,000, in time to enjoy the property’s wildflower gardens in full bloom.
“The area is incredibly bucolic,” she said. “It’s got a little bit of everything. And you get so much bang for your buck.”
What You’ll Find
Covering 12 square miles, the Middlesex County town of Essex is small, with a population of less than 6,700, but encompasses three villages: Essex Village, Centerbrook and Ivoryton, each with its own ZIP code.

Essex Village grew up around the shipbuilding trade — and continues to support a cluster of marinas, yacht services and boating clubs — while the other two villages were fueled by industry along Falls River, which crosses the town from west to east.
Now primarily residential, Essex is “one of the few places where you don’t have a main city at the mouth of the river, so it stays very clean and picturesque,” said Colette Harron, a real estate agent with William Pitt Sotheby’s and a longtime Essex resident.
The town’s population skews older, with a median age of 53, compared with a statewide median of 40, according to census data.
Centerbrook is the more commercial section, with a supermarket, service stations and pizza parlors. The center of Ivoryton, once a hub for the manufacturing of ivory products, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as “a well-preserved example of a company town.”
Historic district protections for the town have been discussed in the past, but have never received broad support, said Melissa A. Josefiak, the director of the Essex Historical Society. Yet those who appreciate history often choose to live in Essex because of its historic architecture, and voluntarily “maintain their properties in keeping with the historic character of their neighborhood,” Ms. Josefiak said.

What You’ll Pay
The median single-family home price for the year ending in May was $380,000, roughly the same as the previous year, according to information provided by Ms. Harron.
About 80 single-family homes and 15 condominiums were on the market as of July 7. The least expensive single-family house was a one-bedroom ranch on 1.69 acres for $125,000; the most expensive, at $2.995 million, was a renovated four-bedroom Victorian on Foxboro Point with expansive river views.
Condominium prices ranged from $150,000 for a one-bedroom unit to $539,900 for a new two-bedroom townhouse. One of the more popular developments is Heritage Cove, on River Road, Ms. Harron said. Although it is an older complex, all of the condos and townhouses there have water views. “People buy them and redo them,” she said.
Historic homes with preserved exteriors and fully updated interiors tend to sell quickly, especially if they have water views, said Joel Lucas, an agent with Coldwell Banker.
Buyers from New York City are plentiful, particularly because “the property taxes are practically free,” Mr. Lucas said, compared to what you might pay across the Sound on Long Island.
85 DENNISON ROAD | A three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house with a back deck and a hot tub, built in 1997 on 0.92 acres, listed for $359,000. 860-306-2812CreditMatthew D’Alto for The New York Times
Essex Station Luxury Rentals, which opened last year, is the only rental complex in town. The 52 one- and two-bedroom apartments there are fully leased, at rents ranging from $1,595 to $1,895 a month, with 40 names on the waiting list, said Penny Parker, an agent who works with the developer.
“It was tough to get through zoning, because Essex isn’t used to apartments,” Ms. Parker said. “But it’s been very well received.”
The Vibe
Essex Village draws tourists to its Main Street shops and restaurants, including the well-known Griswold Inn, which has a Colonial-era tap room with live music and an all-you-can-eat brunch called the Sunday Hunt Breakfast.
Other attractions include the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat in Centerbrook, operated by the Valley Railroad Co., and eagle-watching cruises that depart from the dock at the Connecticut River Museum.
In Essex, most any holiday is an excuse for a parade, including the Fourth of July, St. Patrick’s Day and Groundhog Day. Ms. Carroll recalled wrapping holiday presents at home one day in December when she heard music in the distance and opened her front door to find a fife-and-drum band marching up Main Street playing Christmas carols.
Professional theater productions can be seen year-round at the Ivoryton Playhouse, a 250-seat theater that dates to 1911. A farmers’ market is held on summer Saturdays on the adjacent Ivoryton Green.
The Schools
Essex is part of a regional school district that includes the towns of Chester and Deep River. Each town has its own elementary school and board of education, and a fourth board oversees the regional district.
There is a regional preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 at Essex Elementary School, which has about 340 students in preschool through sixth grade.
The regional John Winthrop Middle School, in Deep River, serves about 265 students in seventh and eighth grades. Students can learn how to grow and harvest vegetables in an extensive campus garden. Since 2008, the New England League of Middle Schools has recognized Winthrop as a Spotlight School for its record of “effective teaching and learning.”
Valley Regional High School, serving ninth through 12th grade, is also in Deep River.
The Commute
The Amtrak train from the neighboring town of Old Saybrook to Penn Station in Manhattan takes about two hours and 15 minutes. One-way fares start at $42.
Shore Line East trains run regularly from Old Saybrook and Westbrook to New Haven, where commuters can catch a Metro-North train to Grand Central. The ride takes two to three hours; a one-way ticket ranges from $24 to $30, depending on the time of travel and method of purchase, and a monthly pass is $573 to $589.
Driving the roughly 110 miles to Manhattan on Interstate 95 can take as long as three hours, depending on traffic.
The History
During the War of 1812, Essex shipbuilders specialized in building privateers, privately owned warships used to prey upon British merchant ships. On the night of April 7, 1814, British troops attacked Essex and destroyed 27 of the ships, causing one of the greatest financial losses of the war. The event is commemorated annually with a Burning of the Ships Day, featuring a parade and re-enactments.

Opinion: It's like paradise (if you can overlook a few things)
Gary Gerth, 74, the recently elected town supervisor of Shelter Island, described this sylvan knob of land tucked in the crook of the East End of Long Island as “an emerald jewel set in the bracelet of turquoise waters.”
Gary Gerth, 74, the recently elected town supervisor of Shelter Island, described this sylvan knob of land tucked in the crook of the East End of Long Island as “an emerald jewel set in the bracelet of turquoise waters.”
“It’s not for everyone,” he added.
Georgiana Ketcham, 82, discovered Shelter Island more than 50 years ago, after her husband inherited a boat and the couple combed the Long Island coast between Amityville and Montauk, looking for a place for a summer home. Ten years later, they moved there permanently.
“I’m the oldest living real estate broker on Shelter Island,” Ketcham said. So she knows what she is talking about when she tells you it “isn’t for everybody.”
Shelter Island is a qualified paradise because of challenges that are the flip side of its charms. The 4-by-5 mile chunk of Suffolk County, shaped like a disastrous experiment in pancake making, is reached somewhat inconveniently by ferry, but residents say their cares drift away as they cross the waters from the North or South Fork. The island has clams, osprey and golden forsythia foaming like Champagne in the spring, but lacks a hospital, a movie theater and home mail delivery. Police mostly deal with small stuff like returning lost wallets or field calls about felled power lines, but if you are caught speeding, your name will be in the local newspaper.
“My mother can’t wrap her head around the fact that there’s no shopping,” said Annemarie Norris, 41, who in 2015 bought a four-bedroom house with her husband, Benedict, for $775,000 in the Silver Beach neighborhood.
Which is to say, Shelter Island has a pharmacy, a bookstore, two hardware stores and a grocery store but nothing remotely resembling a mall. “We sit around the firepit,” Annemarie Norris said. “Or we sit on the back porch. Or we walk around the corner. Or we sit on the beach.”
With a population of 2,400 that explodes to five times that number in the summer, the island has two kinds of residents.
The Norrises are part-timers. They live in a two-bedroom Brooklyn co-op with their two young sons and spend weekends in their brick-and-shingle house on Brander Parkway. They even enjoy coming out in winter, when the island is low-key and windswept, and only a few restaurants are open. (A favorite, the Tavern at the Shelter Island House hotel, has recently changed hands and is turning Italian; it reopens as Caci this month.)
By contrast, John Kaasik, 62, grew up on Shelter Island and returned after spending much of his 20s in Europe.
“I stayed here against the better wishes of my wallet,” he said, referring to the island’s narrow, service-oriented economy, which encourages multitasking. He and his wife, Anu, own the Azalea House bed-and-breakfast and the Go’fors taxi company and stage the annual high school musical. John Kaasik is also a playwright.
The permanent population, with its many retirees, is its own clan, residents say. Shelter Island’s churches, school, library and fire department are all volunteer strongholds that keep people active throughout the seasons and raise the quality of services.
But the twain do meet at the island’s golf courses, tennis courts, sailing school and beaches. And at Sylvester Manor, a plantation that was run with slave labor into the 19th century and is now an organic farm with cultural events and educational programs; at the farmers’ market on the grounds of the historical society, which is being expanded; and at concerts at the Perlman Music Program, a summer institute for young string players founded by Toby Perlman, the wife of Itzhak Perlman (he leads the faculty).
And there are clashes. As Shelter Island attracts wealthy buyers sidestepping the snoot and traffic of the Hamptons, prices are rising and the character is changing.
“I wouldn’t want it to feel like some sort of gated community in a retirement village in Florida,” John Kaasik said. “I can’t say it’s the case now, but it’s trending toward that.”
In August, six residents filed a lawsuit to reverse a rule forbidding short-term rentals. Although the law was enacted to reduce disruptions caused by raucous visitors, the plaintiffs argue that renting gives vital income to homeowners who need help paying mortgages or taxes.
Gerth, the town supervisor, is on their side. Renting for any length of time, he said, brings in tourists, and tourists are often converted into residents. Besides, he added, “Renting is a tradition here.”
What You’ll Find
Shelter Island has a variety of topographies and housing styles and one great common theme: water. There are four marinas, as many public beaches and an assortment of ponds, bays and creeks.
The Mashomack Preserve, more than 2,000 acres of protected oak and beech forests, meadows, salt marshes and pine swamps, takes up a third of the island. The habitable remainder contains neighborhoods with different aqueous bodies and wealth indexes.
Shelter Island Heights, for instance, the neighborhood near the North Ferry terminal, has frilly Victorians sunning themselves on hillsides overlooking the harbor and yacht club. These houses are kept close to the bosoms of multigenerational families and come on the market only once in a while. The cluster of nearby businesses includes Stars Café on Grand Avenue and Marie Eiffel’s organic market on North Ferry Road.
Another attraction is the Chequit on Grand Avenue. Built in 1872 as a Methodist retreat, the 37-room hotel was recently renovated and is for sale with its restaurant for $9 million.
Dering Harbor, to the east, has the distinction of being an autonomous village with the smallest population in New York state (11, according to the 2010 census). This status gives the village its own mayor, water supply and an architectural review board that has been criticized for being arbitrary, if not spiteful.
Hay Beach, to the north, is a 1960s subdivision with minimum 1-acre lots. Little Ram Island and Ram Island are narrow spits connected by causeways to the east, where almost all of the houses are on the water or have ocean access or views. Silver Beach, to the southwest, is a former postwar summer community on a peninsula where modest homes are routinely replaced with fancier ones. Nostrand Parkway and Westmoreland Farm are both elite enclaves to the west.
The center of the island is where Ketcham lives on 2 acres, near Gary Paul Gates, journalist and author, and Eric Demarchelier, the restaurateur and artist (and the brother of fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier). “If Shelter Island were a target and you threw darts at it, my house would be in the bull’s-eye,” she said.
Asked whether the island has changed in the 40 years he has known it, Demarchelier, who owns an 1860s clapboard house on a former lima bean farm, said, “Not much. The houses have gotten a little bigger, but there are still no traffic lights and no traffic jams.”
What You’ll Pay
Deborah Von Brook-Binder, who sells real estate for Daniel Gale Sotheby’s on Shelter Island, said the market for the first quarter of this year was slower than last year. The new laws affecting property taxes and mortgage interest rate deductions might be discouraging buyers, she added. “Also, the weather hasn’t been that great.”
According to the real estate website Trulia, the median sales price of Shelter Island homes as of March 18 was $837,500, a year-on-year increase of 5.3 percent based on 116 transactions.
Twenty-three properties were offered on the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island’s website as of May 14. They included a two-bedroom ranch house on 2.2 acres, at 57 North Midway Road, listed at $699,000, and a shingled Colonial-style home with six bedrooms and 600 feet of private beach, at 29 Winthrop Road, listed for $6.9 million.
The Vibe
Shelter Island is “chill,” to use Annemarie Norris’ expression. On their first visit, she and her husband had paused during a cycling excursion when a child approached them. “He was maybe 10,” Norris recalled. “Maybe younger. He said, ‘Do you need help getting anywhere?'”
It wasn’t just that the boy was polite; he was totally unsupervised. She thought, “That’s what I want for my children.”
Kindnesses, small and large, are typical of the islanders, John Kaasik said. After his daughter received a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma, he received concerned messages from community members he barely knew.
“I’ve seen it happen over and over again,” he said. “It’s the perfect example of how things should be.”
The Schools
Christine Finn, who became superintendent of the Shelter Island Union Free School District in the fall, said the district has been reversing the greater Long Island trend of declining enrollments and is showing an uptick. “We’re going to keep the trend going by offering more electives and AP classes,” she said.
Ketcham pointed out that the district just passed an $11.7 million budget, and divided among the 222 students in prekindergarten through 12th grade, that comes to more than $52,700 per student. “Come on, you can send a kid to Choate for that!” she said.
Among the elementary school students who took the 2017 state tests, 51 percent met standards in English versus 42 percent statewide; 54 percent met standards in math versus 46 percent statewide.
Among the middle school students, 48 percent met standards in English versus 40 percent statewide; 26 percent met standards in math versus 39 percent statewide.
The average SAT scores for high school juniors and seniors who took the test in the fall of 2016 were 609 for reading and writing and 557 for math, versus 528 and 523 statewide.
The Commute
Shelter Island is about 2 1/2 hours east of New York City. The North Ferry departs for Greenport, New York, on the North Fork every 10 to 20 minutes. The ride takes eight minutes and costs $16 round trip for a car and driver making a same-day return. The South Ferry departs for North Haven, New York, in the Hamptons every 10 to 15 minutes. The crossing takes four minutes and costs $19 round trip.
The History
In June of 1947, a conference about theoretical physics took place at the Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island. Twenty-four of the world’s leading scientists — including Edward Teller, J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann and Richard Feynman — gathered to discuss the foundations of quantum mechanics. On the way to what is now known as the Shelter Island Conference, the men were given celebrity-style police escorts, tributes to the work many of them had done on the atomic bomb.

A guide to the East Village
Sixth Street development is in the can.
You need a glossary to understand just what is coming to the East Village, the neighborhood east of Interstate 30 and north of Ninth Street. Two breweries — Rebel Kettle and Lost Forty — kicked off development here, and it's now identified by street flags on Sixth Street. So here it is:
The Paint Factory: The new home of Cromwell Architects Engineers at 1300 E. Sixth St., formerly the home of Stebbins and Roberts paint company, hence the name.
12 Star Flats: One- and two-bedroom apartments coming to the second floor of The Paint Factory.
The Mixing Room: A community and event room for rent to the public in The Paint Factory.
The Printshop: Just like it sounds, a retail printshop, in The Paint Factory.
Cathead's Diner: At 515 Shall (pronounced shawl) Ave., but really part of The Paint Factory, it's another enterprise whose purpose you don't have to guess at: It's a restaurant, operated by Donnie Ferneau and Kelli Marks.
The Bike Shop: Not a bike shop, but a 15,000-square-foot warehouse at 1212 E. Sixth St. being renovated by Cromwell Architects Engineers and Moses Tucker Real Estate to the tune of $1.5 million.
The Rail Yard: Not a rail yard, but a food truck and beer garden site. Located in The Bike Shop.
Count Porkula BBQ: Happily, just what it sounds like. Located in The Bike Shop.
eStem: The new elementary and junior high school that is part of the eStem Public Charter Schools Inc.
Now that you're oriented, let's start with The Rail Yard and Count Porkula in The Bike Shop (which used to house Ron King's Recycle Bikes for Kids refurbishing shop, now located at 717 E. 10th St. in North Little Rock). The Bike Shop
Though it has a masculine-sounding name, The Rail Yard is a venture of three women — sisters-in-law Murry Newbern and Linda Newbern and their aunt, Virginia Young — who were inspired to create this outdoor venue that will feature food trucks in rotation. They got the idea for the business on a visit to the Texas Truck Yard in Dallas; they got the idea for the location when they attended a Downtown Little Rock Partnership pop-up party in the alley west of The Bike Shop, along the Union Pacific Railroad track. The decision by Count Porkula to locate in The Bike Shop sealed The Rail Yard deal, co-owner Murry Newbern said. The food trucks will surround a beer garden featuring craft beers; wine and cocktails will be served as well.
Dogs will be welcome at The Rail Yard, though they may have to be restrained to keep them from charging Count Porkula. Kelly Lovell and Walt Todd, owners of the Count's food truck, had been looking for a kitchen "to do more catering out of," Lovell said.
"It just kind of organically grew. ... It was just kind of a perfect fit" with The Rail Yard, he said. They hope to be smoking by the first of July.
Rock Town Distillery at Sixth and Shall streets is moving to SoMa, leaving empty a space that Dan Fowler, Cromwell's director of finance and business development, calls "amazing." Moses Tucker and Cromwell have not yet announced plans for what will go in the Rock Town space, but Fowler said they would have a couple of "exciting things" to say about the space in a few months
The Paint Factory
Now cross Shall Street to The Paint Factory, the new home of Cromwell Architects Engineers and other enterprises. There, whiskers willing, Cathead's Diner will open in May.
Donnie Ferneau (formerly of Ferneau, Ferneau's Good Food and the 1836 Club) will once more assume his chef's toque, this time to offer Southern dishes, both traditional and eccentric: His partner, baker Kelli Marks, said the menu should offer such things as "meat and three" plates, pulled pork, ribs, fried chicken and ... and donut sandwiches and biscuit nachos. Cathead's will serve brunch both on Saturday and Sunday, and Saturday's is being called the "Instagram Brunch," Marks said, because "it's going to be amazing things you're going to want to put on Instagram." Sunday brunch will be an all-you-can eat "hot line." Marks, who formerly operated Sweet Love Bakery, will be baking the biscuits and pastries for the farm-to-table, cafeteria-style operation. The entrance to Cathead's will be from Shall Street.
The Cromwell offices, The Mixing Room and The Print Shop will all be entered from Sixth Street. The Mixing Room will be a 900-square-foot meeting and event space for the community. It will be available for rent, but Cromwell will allow such groups as neighborhood associations to use it without charge. "The concept there is exchange and mixing of thoughts — advancing ideas and thoughts in the community," Fowler said. Its name references paint mixing; the room could be the birthplace of ideas as varied as the color spectrum.
The Print Shop will offer retail printing for such things as high-volume business printing, booklets and large-format items like posters and banners.
The 12 Star Flats, 16 apartments named for the best-selling paint of Stebbins and Roberts successor Sterling Paint, are on the second floor of The Paint Factory, with an entrance on Sixth. Fowler said the flats will be ready for occupation in mid-April, and that several have already been leased. Available are three two-bedroom, two-bath units and 13 one-bed, one-bath studios.
Fowler hopes to see more development in the area. "I think what really needs to follow on the heels of retail and office is a really great focus on the neighborhood to the east and south of our area," he said, including more housing. Some of that will come from Harbor Town, John Burkhalter's apartment development on the Arkansas River east of Heifer International.
eStem Elementary and Junior High School
EStem charter schools, with grades K-9 campuses on Third Street and Louisiana and 10-12 on the campus of UA Little Rock, will open a new elementary and a new junior high at 400 Shall St. in July, when the 2018-19 school year begins. WER Architects helped transform a 120,000-square-foot warehouse into the schools, which will serve 750 elementary students and 300 junior high school students at opening. Eventually, the schools will hold 850 elementary seats and 450 junior high school seats. The school received a Walton Family Foundation grant of $2 million to buy the Shall Street property. The total cost of the project is $30 million; eStem is using federal New Market Tax Credits and federal and state historic tax credits to finance the construction.
Rock City Yacht Club
It's been about 12 years in the works, but John Burkhalter's marina development on the Arkansas River, just east of Heifer International, is taking shape and will be open this summer, the engineer's spokesman said.
"The cat's out of the bag and we're full steam ahead," Chris Masingill said. "[We're] building a whole community down there. ... And it's connected to all the additional synergies downtown."
The Rock City Yacht Club, a public-private partnership that's taken myriad state and federal permits to build, will feature a four-acre park and public access ramp built by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, at least 158 boat slips and a dock store. A year or so down the road, Masingill said, Harbor Town — Burkhalter's name for the whole development — will include a luxury apartment complex called the Fountainbleau. "Every unit will have a view of the river," Masingill said; there will be a total of 176 two-bedroom "high-end" apartments in seven three- and four-story buildings. The apartment complex will feature a pool and clubhouse.
Massingill expects ground to be broken at the end of the summer or fall on the Fountainbleau. It sounds ambitious, but then so did the entire project.
At full build-out, there will be 258 slips, and boat rental will be available. A $1.3 million federal Clean Vessel Act and Boating Infrastructure grant was used to build the fueling dock. Game and Fish contributed $100,000.
"If you had told me nine years ago that I would just now be at this stage," Burkhalter told the Arkansas Times in 2015 as he gestured to the pipes and crane along the river, "I would have taken a pass." His estimated opening date then: summer 2016. It took two years more. The entrance to Harbor Town — on East Second Street (by way of Bond and Sixth streets) will be stunning, Masingill said: "A 60,000-pound anchor from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier placed in the middle of a fountain — water jets shooting up all around it, lights flashing ... that's going to be the first thing that people see when they come into the marina," he said.
A 2,000-square-foot, full-service dock store will service boats. A restaurant adjacent to the dock store will open after the residential development is complete.

Undecided from which Greek island to sail next summer? Choose Milos and discover the Cyclades archipelago by a boat!
Due to its volcanic origin, Milos is considered a rarity among the Cyclades islands. Its coasts made of rocks where splendid beaches and cliffs overlook the sea, combined with Greek typicality, its history, and traditional white houses, make it an island sought after by thousands of tourists every year.
The island navigation is also particularly convenient thanks to the protection provided by its gulf, a huge natural harbor that provides shelter and therefore welcomes a large number of boats all year round.

Where is Milos located?
Milos is an island of Greece and is located in the Aegean Sea. It is in fact part of the famous Cyclades archipelago, composed, among the numerous islands, also by the famous Santorini and Mykonos.
In particular, Milos is the inhabited island of the Cyclades located further west, symbolically placed halfway along the sea line that separates Athens (Greek capital) from Heraklion on the island of Crete.
How to reach our destination?
It is not possible to reach Milos by direct flight as the island has only a small domestic airport. To arrive on the island by air, it is, therefore, necessary to make a stopover in Athens and then take a direct flight.
A valid alternative to the local flight is the numerous ferries that connect Milos daily with Athens or with Santorini, which also has an international airport.

What is Milos’s main marina?
The main tourist port of Milos, also the destination of the many ferries that arrive on the island every day, is that of Adamas.
The marina of this small town is located in the shelter of the Gulf of Milos, a natural inlet embraced for three quarters by the coasts of the island and therefore, an ideal place to sail.
The Adama’s marina offers 50 berths up to 50 meters long and a maximum draft of 5 meters.
Here are available various services such as water supply, ATM and car rental. The marina also offers a bar and a restaurant but our advice is to taste the typical Greek cuisine in one of Adama’s restaurants.
What attractions to see in Milos?
The most important village on the island is Plaka, characterized by classic narrow streets with whitewashed houses and colored doors and windows. It extends on the sides of the hill overlooking Milos and on the top of which stands the wonderful Venetian castle of Plaka, a must to enjoy a breathtaking landscape.
Among the archaeological finds of Milos, its catacombs stand out. Built around the first century AD and rediscovered in the 19th century, they were used as Christian cemeteries during the Roman domination. It consists of three catacombs interconnected through hundreds of narrow corridors.
On a hill not far from the catacombs stands finally the ancient Roman theater of Milos. Built and used by the Romans, it still resists although the signs of the passage of time are clearly visible on it. Even today it is used by the inhabitants to host various cultural events.

What are the beaches not to be missed in Milos?
Their volcanic characteristic makes Milos beaches particularly unique, thanks to the extraordinary colors and interesting rock formations that surround the coasts.
Sarakiniko beach is probably the most famous and photographed on the island. Don’t expect to find classic sand or pebbles here. It is in fact a very suggestive almost lunar landscape made of long horizontal rocks that stretch towards the sea.
Tsigrado bay, southeast of Plaka, hides a small sandy beach surrounded by huge cliffs and bathed by enchanting waters.
A short distance from Tsigrado is Firiplaka, a small and long beach with soft sand, also surrounded by huge rocks.
