Cranking the turbochargers' boost wasn't enough to make this kind of power alone (with larger compressor wheels and intercoolers the turbos now make a total of 24.6 pounds of boost, up from 19.6 in the AMG GT R), so AMG stuffed the hand-built engine with tech. This is very appropriate, too, as the AMG GT Black Series represents the end of Tobias Moers' run as chairman of AMG before he departs for Aston Martin to take the reins of the British brand from Andy Palmer.
What has Moers and company wrought? For one, the cross-plane crankshaft is out and a flat-plane crankshaft subs in. A flat-plane crank has many advantages (and a few legit disadvantages) for a performance car, but with the Black Series, some compromises are acceptable to make it the ultimate AMG GT. For one, the even firing order of a V-8 running a flat-plane crank allows the engineers to optimize the manifolds for flow. That means more power. The other advantage is truly exceptional throttle response. This flat-plane bent-eight is going to sound remarkably different from the cross-plane units of other AMG GT models, too.

The modifications are extensive enough that the engine gets a new code: M178 LS2. Makes sense to us. It might be based on a lesser AMG engine, but this is a whole different animal.
2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: Lighter, Quicker, Faster, Stronger The rest of the driveline changes are less involved because the underlying hardware is plenty capable. There's a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle that's upgraded to handle the engine's increased torque. Likewise, AMG increased the gearbox's cooling capacity to help it better handle abuse during hard driving. Shift times and shift programming are also tweaked for track performance. Power is channeled rearward through a carbon-fiber driveshaft running through a lighter torque tube, also made of carbon fiber rather than the aluminum torque tube of lesser GTs. The net result is a torque tube that's 40 percent lighter.
While the engine is the dynamic heart of the AMG GT Black Series, it arguably plays second-fiddle to the lurid biplane wing that towers above the car's hindquarters. The large blade elements are carbon fiber, and the smaller flap in the upper wing is electronically controlled and tied to the AMG Dynamics mode. Retracted, the flap aids in top speed runs, but it can pop up to aid in braking or turning. Paired with the other aero mods the Black Series sports, the wing contributes to a total maximum downforce of more than 882 pounds at 155 mph.
Weight reduction is a factor here, as well. In addition to its carbon-fiber torque tube, the Black Series welcomes additional smatterings of carbon fiber elsewhere. On the handling front, the Black Series cribs much of its hardware from the GT R. Still, Mercedes tuned this 720-hp monster to better handle bumpy tracks, such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife, in order to provide enough suppleness to maintain adhesion for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires. Amazingly, this vehicle-specific tire is available in two compounds: A standard "soft" rubber and a harder compound for higher-temperature track use.
Don't worry about the stability control nannies ruining the fun, either. AMG claims the traction control system—with a multi-position intervention switch—controls a variety of parameters and drivers can adjust it on the fly. Level 1 is a conservative setting for wet conditions, while Level 9 allows the least amount of intervention. The system monitors wheelspin and controls engine torque, as well as the engagement of the locking rear differential.

A most distinguished Triumph T140 from Hong Kong
In theory, owning an old Brit bike is a great idea. In reality, your right hand will become more familiar with a Whitworth spanner than the throttle grip.
Of course, you could go out and buy a ‘modern retro.’ But if you want a machine with old school charm and modern reliability, a restomod is an equally valid option.
The owner of this Triumph is a racing driver who chose to go down the restomod route, and he had a clear idea of what he wanted.
Just one hour after buying the T140, he was in the Angry Lane workshop in Hong Kong—run by Guillaume Barras, organizer of the territory’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.
“My client didn’t want to change the bike radically,” says Guillaume. “He just wanted it restored, and made neater and lighter. It needed to be more reliable, and start on the first kick.”
“I said to him, ‘So you want something that Steve McQueen would ride?’ He said, ‘I’d prefer something like Paul Newman would ride!’”
To be precise, the Triumph is a 1977 Bonneville T140 RV. The RV was an export version of the five-speed ‘V,’ with engine modifications to suit the US market. The gear lever was switched to the left-hand side to comply with regulations.
Guillaume describes the bike as ‘virtually new,’ and he’s not exaggerating. The engine was stripped for a complete rebuild with new cylinders and pistons, and new valve gear.
The most frustrating part was preventing leaks from the pushrod tubes—an issue that will be familiar to many T140 owners. After several attempts with different O-rings and guidance from the British Cycle Supply Company, the tubes were finally sealed. (“Special thanks to our British friend Simon Bollix, AKA ‘Grumpy Old Man,’ for rebuilding the engine three times!” says Guillaume.)
There’s a custom 2-into-1 exhaust handmade by New Zealander Paul Bryant, and the carbs have been upgraded to new Amal MKI Premier 932s, with velocity stacks.
To match the added pep from the new engine, Angry Lane have installed a new (and lighter) brake system. Alloy two-piston calipers from AP Racing bite down on floating discs from EBC, and the lines have been replaced by custom hoses from HEL.
The wheels are low-key: black anodized aluminum Sun Rims, with spokes from Buchanans. The hubs have been ceramic-coated black to match, and the tires are Heidenau K60 Scout dual sports: 4.00-18 on the rear, and 100/90-19 on the front.
The fork tubes are original—but everything inside is new, including a set of progressive springs. New triples and risers have been fashioned out of aluminum billet. At the back, there’s a pair of new Öhlins shocks, supplied by the French specialist Mecadata and configured to match the rider’s weight.
The electrics are a mix of old and new. A modern Antigravity lithium battery provides the juice, and there’s an electronic ignition from the New Zealand company Pazon. But there’s also a new high output 12V 3-phase stator-rotor and regulator rectifier from the original Prince Of Darkness, Lucas.
There’s a Motogadget m.unit control box to ensure everything is communicating correctly, and the German company also supplied the bar-end blinkers, the tiny speedo, and the neat circular bar-end mirrors.
They’re attached to classy new bars from LSL, with controls from Renard Speedshop and Kustom Tech—who also supplied the Grimeca 12mm clutch master cylinder and lever. The headlight is a Bates, and the taillight is a Bates-style LED unit supplied by Motone.
The mods to the frame and bodywork are subtle. With the help of friend and welding whizz Tom Lonnen, Angry Lane have shortened the rear of the frame. And the tank has been modified to clamp onto the frame via brackets rather than the original center attachment system.
It’s topped off with a Monza-style gas cap. All the visible nuts and bolts on the Triumph have been replaced with new stainless steel items.
There’s deep and glossy new 2k paint on the frame, tank and fenders. After checking several shades of green, the choice was set on a lovely Mercedes Caledonia Green.
The front fender, believe it or not, is a modified carbon fiber Ducati item. At the back is a much more conventional stainless steel unit from Daytona Japan.
Angry Lane’s specialty is leatherwork, so Guillaume’s brother Ben has created a magnificent ribbed seat wrapped in Italian vegetable-tanned leather. Matching saddlebags are modeled on the design of vintage postbags used in the US.
The right saddlebag even features a USB charging plug, requested by the client, and the left one contains a toolkit. The handgrips, gear shifter, and kick pedal are covered with the same leather.
And yes, the bike now starts on the first kick.

This Restomod ’56 is the Product of Four Decades of Admiration of Tri-Five Chevys
John Clark fell in love with Tri-Five Chevys in a bizarre way. Young John was on his way home from school one day when he had a life altering experience of sorts. First he heard the sirens and then the screeching of rubber on the blacktop. Finally he caught an eyeful of what the commotion was about. It turns out it was a badass bright-yellow 1955 Chevy trying to outrun the local cops. To the youngster that was the coolest thing he had ever witnessed in his eight years of life.
From that moment on John was hooked. Soon he would be on the fast track to being a true Bowtie connoisseur. But first he needed a ride to call his own. He funded his first Chevrolet by way of his paper route, buying a ’55 two-door sedan at the age of 14. Thirty-nine years later and he still owns that ride, but it doesn’t look or act much the way it did when he first brought it home. Now fully caged with a tilt nose and an aluminum headed 427 stuffed between the rails, the Chevy is one tough performer out on the strip and the street.
After owning that ’55 for almost four decades, John decided he needed another Tri-Five in his stable of cool rides. This time around he figured he would build a ’56 as he always liked the more refined look of that one-year design. And since that model gets the least attention of the Tri-Fives, he figured it would be a good one to build up into his dream ride. The only thing left was to source a good starting point for his project.
Luckily for John, a good friend had a decent ’56 shell that was there for the taking. After 25 years of ownership, the buddy figured he would never get to it, so he handed the title over to John. He was more than happy to take the stripped body off his friend’s hands and give this ’56 the attention it deserved. So then he drew up a plan; a strategy to build this ride into a Tri-Five to be reckoned with.
First things first. Even though the carcass was pretty solid as far as 60-year-old East Coast cars go, John decided to mediablast the body and correct a few issues. There was very little rust on the body panels but he decided to replace them anyway. He added a new floor, trunk floor, and firewall, which brought the ’56 to near OEM standards. Next, the newly repaired shell was sent over to C&M Autobody in Middletown, New York, where the Chevy would have its final bodywork done. Once its flanks were straightened to perfection, C&M laid down the Scion Electric Wasabi Green paint, and accented the hue with Mercedes-Benz Black. The two colors worked well with each other and helped make John’s ride stand out from the typical Tri-Five builds seen over the years.
Next, the chassis was broken down, mediablasted, and refinished. John then selected a few choice parts that would ultimately give this Tri-Five the ride quality he was after. Tubular upper and lower control arms and Heidts 2-inch drop spindles were installed up front, while Super Slider 3-inch drop rear leaf springs were placed out back. These mods gave this particular Bowtie the stance and ride John craved. To get this hot rod pointed in the right direction, a CPP close-ratio power steering gearbox was sourced and added to this muscle ride’s menu.
To get this Chevy to come to a halt, a CPP big-brake kit was installed. It’s a four-wheel disc system with drilled and slotted rotors: 13-inch up front and 12-inch in the rear. The system’s four-piston calipers are fed by a Wilwood master cylinder. Out on the corners, John chose to adorn his ride with American Racing Ridler wheels: 17×7 up front and 20×9.5 out back. They are shod in Nexen N3000 tires: 215/45ZR17 and 255/35ZR20, respectively.
For motivation, John started with a four-bolt main 400ci block, cleaned up with at 0.030-inch overbore, which punched it out to a 406. The bores were filled with 10.5:1 pistons and hooked to an OEM GM forged crank. Dart aluminum heads and a Victor intake were added up top and a Comp flat tappet Magnum cam gets the valves jumpin’. A Quick Fuel 750-cfm carb helps feeds this beast the octane it needs. All this splendid power is topped with a killer March Performance air cleaner. It’s kept cool with a PRC polished crossflow radiator and condenser module with a pair of SPAL electric fans.
An MSD billet distributor and ignition handles the start and spark. Patriot Clipster ceramic-coated headers send the spent gasses out to a fully polished Pypes exhaust with electric dumps. This ’56 is shifted with a Turbo 400 with a manual shift valvebody and a 3,500-stall converter. A TCI outlaw shifter gets it through the gears and a beefed up ’56 rear housing with 3.55 Richmond gears gets the power to the pavement out back.
The interior in this stunning Tri-Five is nothing short of stellar. Keith from Amity Upholstery in Newburgh, New York, handled the duties on the ’56. They first built a custom console and a set of door panels and finished it all off in soft-black leather using all real hides. A pair of Procar by Scat seats was sourced for the build and covered in that same leather fabric. A Flaming River stainless column was added next, along with a Vintage Air unit for climate control. As far as the dash goes, John had a plan. “I love the stock dashboards in these cars so to help modernize the look we covered it in leather,” states the owner. To finish it all off, the interior received Clayton Machine Works handles and cranks, and plenty of carbon-fiber accents all around.
All of John’s hard work paid off in spades when he and his father, Jack, (a lifelong hot rodder himself at 77 years young) debuted the ’56 at the Right Coast Nationals in Syracuse, New York. This Chevy was chosen and singled out in a field of almost 8,500 show cars. It won a Top 100 Award and received a Designers Dozen Award nomination from Creative Rod and Kustom out of Pennsylvania. Today, John is enjoying the fruits of his labor, running this swift Chevy out on the streets where it belongs. Who knows, maybe a drive-by in this ’56 will inspire another young gun to join in, get involved, and make the hot rod hobby part of his or her life.

Black ’n’ Blue: Lexus GS F and RC F 10th-Anniversary Specials
Lexus can’t lean on motorsports heritage to sell its F-branded performance cars, but now that 10 years have passed since the first one went on sale, it is marking the occasion with RC F and GS F anniversary editions. Consider them a tribute to naturally aspirated V-8s and rear-wheel drive.
The matte-gray RC F and GS F pictured here will be sold as the F 10th Anniversary in Japan and limited to 500 total, and they celebrate all the big-bore, fat-tired Lexus models since the first IS F launched in 2007. That compact sedan surprised everyone, and despite never seriously challenging the BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG during its seven-year model run, the IS F proved Lexus could unbutton its collar and cut loose.
The GS F comes with gloss-black wheels, blue brake calipers, and a carbon-fiber body kit (rear valance, decklid, and chin spoiler). Inside, Lexus chose a blueberry Toaster Strudel theme: the blue leather seats feature a thick, white stripe, while the blue steering wheel’s 12-o’clock rim marking also is white. More blue leather adorns the shifter, the dash pad, and the rear-seat headrests and bolsters. The seatbelts are blue, as is the microsuede that wraps the instrument panel. That same material (in black) covers the armrests and a mesmerizing headliner, which has a similar origami-inspired pattern to the one found in the 2018 LS.
The RC F largely follows suit, although its mix of matte-painted and glossy carbon-fiber panels gives it a cobbled-together appearance. The limited-edition coupe keeps the blue, white, and black colors inside, but unlike in the GS F, the rear seat and associated seatbelts are entirely black. Both RC F and GS F models receive their own blue woven-carbon-fiber trim patterns.
While there are no engine mods to either car, Lexus fits upgraded dampers and a titanium exhaust that should render the company’s synthetic Active Sound Control superfluous. When we last tested a GS F, we turned off that feature and let the 467-hp 5.0-liter V-8 sing to the 7300-rpm redline as its Yamaha engineers intended.
