Kalaignar international convention centre to come up on 25-acre land in Chennai

CHENNAI: As part of the 100th birth anniversary of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday announced the state government would build a Kalaignar International Convention Centre on a 25-acre land in Chennai. The centre will have a seminar hall with a capacity to accommodate 5,000 people, exhibition halls, parks, star hotels, restaurants and multi-storey parking lot. On the occasion, Stalin also released the logo for the centenary celebrations of Karunanidhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the world-class convention centre will be suitable for conducting global industrial exhibitions, trade conferences, technical meetings, international film festivals etc. Such utilities would take the glory of Kalaignar across the globe. “This idea struck my mind during my recent visit to Singapore and Japan,” he added.

Referring to the presence of the former Governor of West Bengal Gopalakrishna Gandhi at the event, the Chief Minister said, “The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi is here to pay encomiums to Karunanidhi who is the ‘ideological heir’ of Periyar EV Ramasamy.” Stalin said both Periyar and CN Annadurai had great respect for Mahatma Gandhi.

He said the state government has planned to celebrate the centenary of Karunanidhi for a year and recalled the contributions of the late leader for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu over several decades. Speaking on the occasion, Gopalakrishna Gandhi recalled when he joined the civil service, Karunanidhi was the chief minister and Stalin was just 15 years old.

“In public life, Kalaignar symbolised maturity. In administration and in governance, Karunanidhi symbolised balance. He knew what the word Alavu in Tamil means - Measure - When to do and what to do. Also, when not to and what should not be done. He was a skilful politician and a tremendous administrator. I would like to say this particularly to the young ministers present here and to his grandson on the stage today,” he said.

“In the politician Karunanidhi, there was a statesman par excellence. In that statesman, there was an artiste. Kalaiganar was supremely an artiste in the administration. When the late MGR, who was the heartthrob of millions was critically ill, Kalaiganar, the artiste expressed his wish that MGR should return to political life.

“The mandate to govern is the duty to discharge not a power to flaunt. Public properties should be protected as the assets of a trust. Every moment in the office is holy,” he added. On the occasion, the chief minister also released a short film on the contributions of Karunanidhi to the state, and inaugurated a photo exhibition covering the important events in the life of the late leader.

Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan recalled the contributions of Karunanidhi to the people of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil language and its literature. Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, ministers and senior officials were among those present on the occasion.

Remembering Gemini Ganesan, the legendary star of South Indian Cinema, on his 98th birth anniversary today.

Gemini Ganesan was one of the Big Three of Tamil Cinema of yesteryear, the other two being M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan.

He was born as Ramaswamy Ganesan on 17 November 1920 to a typical Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu. From a teacher's job at Madras Christian College, where he did his graduation, he later joined the production department of Gemini Studios and eventually became known as 'Gemini Ganesan'.

Beginning his film career with Miss Malini in 1947, Gemini Ganesan went on to do an astonishing number of hits in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. His first major success as a lead actor was 'Manampol Mangalyam' in 1953. His first Hindi film was 'Miss Mary' in which he was paired opposite Meena Kumari.His most memorable films are 'Naan Avan Illai', 'Pasamalar', 'Kalathur Kannamma', 'Vanjikottai Valiban', 'Then Nilavu', 'Konjum Salangai', and 'Avvai Shanmughi'. He starred beside Sivaji Ganesan in 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman'.

Melodrama, romance, tragedy, comedy, historical... Gemini Ganesan effortlessly portrayed heroes of all shades. He played everything from college student to music guru to romantic hero, in a career that spanned nearly half a century. He was Known as ‘Kadhal Mannan’ (King of Romance) for the characters he essayed on screen.

Despite his long innings on the screen, he never got any National award, not even as a supporting actor. He neither dabbled in politics nor did he nurse a fan club. When the two giants, MGR and Shivaji, backed by a scaffolding of fan following, were striding the Tamil screen, Gemini eventually established his place — by playing roles that suited him.

After starring in more than 200 movies, the actor passed away on 22 March 2005.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tributes to AIADMK founder and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M G Ramachandran on his birth anniversary and lauded his efforts towards poverty alleviation and emphasis on women empowerment. Born in 1917, MGR, as he became popularly known, was a Tamil film superstar who joined the C N Annadurai-led DMK and rose to be one of its popular faces. He formed his own party in 1972 following differences with M Karunanidhi, the then DMK chief after Annadurai’s death. “Bharat Ratna MGR lives in the hearts of several people. Be it the world of films or politics, he was widely respected,” Modi tweeted.

“During his CM tenures, he initiated numerous efforts towards poverty alleviation and also emphasised on women empowerment. Tributes to MGR on his Jayanti,” the prime minister said. As chief minister for over 10 years after leading his party to victory for three consecutive terms till his death in 1987, MGR is credited with popularising several welfare programmes, including mid-day meal scheme, in the state. The southern state is likely to have assembly polls in May with the two Dravidian parties being seen as the main contenders for power. The BJP had tied up with the ruling AIADMK in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
