Hi guys.

Incase you haven’t heard, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam are trying to raise money for a Terry Jones statue in his home town of Colwyn Bay Wales.

I’m a little angry it took so long, but better late then never am I right?

I just know that Jonesy would be so proud and honored. I really hope enough money is raised for this to happen.

Eric is also involved, and of course Cleese isn’t because he’s a cu*t, but that’s beside the point.

I got a bit of a shock when I saw that Terry Jones’s X account posted something. I’m like “did the ghost of Jonesy do this or something?” Lmao I was so perplexed. But then I read into it and I realized what was happening and I got very emotional and very excited.

If you don’t know, Jonesy is my favorite python and when he passed away almost 5 years ago, I was utterly devastated and depressed. I still miss him very much.

I have a feeling enough money will be raised. I hope the statue is the older version of him. It just kinda makes more sense.

Listen... as a huge film buff, I am unable to be short about this question. So you’re getting a top 20 fav tv shows and a top 40 fav movies (and I still had a hard time, there were so many more I wanted to include) Tv Shows:

1)     Trust (from 2018 about the kidnap of John Paul Getty III): nobody seems to know this show exists and it’s SO FUCKING GOOD! Go watch it!!! 2)     Breaking Bad 3)     American Horror Story (Asylum, Freak Show and Cult) 4)     Mindhunter 5)     Penny Dreadful 6)     Spartacus 7)     The Haunting of Hill House 8)     Vikings (up until season 4, after that it got horrible imo) 9)     Game of Thrones (for Theon) 10)  Hannibal 11)  Bates Motel 12)  Fargo 13)  Six Feet Under 14)  Kulderzipken (this is a Belgian show that I watched with my family over and over again as a kid, it’s hilarious and I love it) 15)  Misfits 16)  Wentworth 17)  The Walking Dead 18)  Shameless 19)  Stranger Things 20)  La Casa de Papel

During the question and answer session that concludes his solo production, George Gershwin Alone, Hershey Felder was asked by an audience member at Berkshire Theatre Group’s Colonial Theatre why he did not choose to be a concert pianist.  His response was that in performing his nine distinctive one-man shows he plays more concerts than any other pianist in the world:  almost four hundred per year.  To those who say that one cannot combine acting with piano-playing, Felder points to the shows he has created, each about a brilliant composer/pianist, using first person narration, accompanied by their music.

There have been other celebrated pianist/entertainers like Liberace and Victor Borge, but Felder’s plays with music are a unique blend of genres. Painstakingly researched, they are distinguishable from Michael Feinstein’s presentations because Felder is not only a singer/pianist but also an accomplished actor who knows how to bring a character to life and to interact with his audience.  In addition to Gershwin, he has resuscitated such greats as Chopin, Beethoven, Bernstein, Liszt, Berlin, and Tchaikovsky and has several more in the works.

Previously staged on Broadway, George Gershwin Alone is directed by Tony Award-nominee Joel Zwick, who has also collaborated with Felder on Beethoven and Maestro (Leonard Bernstein).  Zwick is an actor, drama professor, and a theatrical, television and film (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) director.  This run of George Gershwin Alone, unfortunately only one week in duration, should be seen before it closes.

In the course of a packed ninety minutes we hear scratchy old recordings of George and Ira Gershwin’s music and songs, we learn about music theory (who knew that the same two repeating chords that introduce  Summertime were given a totally different approach by John Williams in Jaws!) and study the critical and controversial influence of jazz.  Projected upstage are large photographs of the people and historical places prominent in Gershwin’s life as Felder traces his career in America and later Paris.  Beginning chronologically in 1898 with the composer’s birth in New York City to Russian immigrant parents, Felder regales us with personal stories revealing the ups and downs experienced by Gershwin, all the while playing his memorable music, including a complete rendition of Rhapsody in Blue.

Through Felder’s impersonations, we meet Gershwin’s family, friends, teachers, employers, and the many artists and musicians he knew. There was Al Jolson, for whom he wrote Swanee (he sounded as though he had “a megaphone in the middle of his throat”), and Ethel Merman (whose voice “sounded the same as Jolson”), Paul Whiteman, who commissioned  Rhapsody in Blue, which imitated the sound of a train on which Gershwin traveled and the noise of the cities he passed, DuBose Heyward and his wife Dorothy, who helped Gershwin adapt Heyward’s novel into the opera Porgy and Bess, and Kitty Carlisle, who admitted to  Felder in an interview for this show that her mother wanted her to marry Gershwin.

Though the performance is infused with humor, Felder also personalizes Gershwin’s physical pain, in the form of terrible headaches, which were eventually diagnosed to be the result of a brain tumor that killed him at the age of 38, as well as the emotional pain caused by some wretched reviews of An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess.  In addition, he  suffered the indignity of the anti-Semitic, racist attacks on his religion and music by Henry Ford in the Dearborn Independent.

The production is a pleasure for the eyes as well as the ears, thanks to  the work of Lighting Designer Michael T. Gilliam, whose colorful palette not only matches the mood of each piece, but can also focus, laser-like, on Felder’s hands, when the rest of the stage fades to black.  Sound Designer Erik Carstensen’s use of original recordings of well-known songs injects period authenticity into the production.

After Felder’s performance was officially over, he asked the audience which songs they would like him to play (Gershwin wrote over one thousand of them).  He then located the music for the requested selections in the oversize books he kept on a desk nearby (some of which were original scores), and supplied the words as willing patrons sang along, following which he answered questions.  Felder talked of the great artists he has researched and impersonated in his shows, and how they put the human condition into their art in order to make the world more beautiful, more elegant, and finally, something we have lost today—more civil.  As the evening drew to a close, Felder played Clair de Lune by Debussy, whose music had a great influence on Gershwin—a perfect example of beauty in the world.

It Shouldn’t Happen To A Film Journalist

One of the horrors of being a film journalist is the roundtable interview, or RT, in which a group of writers from various countries crowd, well, round a table and stare at an empty seat that’s been reserved for the ‘talent’. After long minutes of stilted conversation or, worse, heavily pregnant silence, in walks the director or star.

The frenzy begins, with everyone clashing questions and only listening to half an answer before pouncing on the slightest pause to fire another query. It’s chaos – especially if the group is large (I’ve been on RTs ranging from three journalists to 25) and full of dicks… Sorry, personalities.

In most cases, it should be stressed, Total Film is afforded one-on-one access, meaning a rapport can be built without an Australian journalist jumping in to ask Michael Fassbender if he’s ever dived the Great Barrier Reef or flown Qantas.

But sometimes, especially at film festivals, RTs are inevitable. The only thing for it is to steel yourself and ride into battle.

In 20 years of doing this, last month’s Cannes RT with Adam Driver, for Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, was my most excruciating yet. Worse than Sabotage, when David Ayer sat down and a journo immediately asked, “Who are you?” then followed his admirably calm answer – “David Ayer, director” – with, “Can you spell that?”

It started when the 6ft 4in Driver said his hellos and a journalist whistled, “You’re a big boy. Not like Spike Lee [director of Driver’s other movie in Cannes, BlacKkKlansman] – he’s a termite.” “I wouldn’t say that to his face,” came the shocked reply.

Then, for five or six minutes, everything went fine, with Driver’s hackles smoothing and his initially clipped, guarded responses beginning to stretch and warm. Step up yours truly to make things weird again.

“I’ve just noticed your t-shirt,” beamed Driver. I looked down and realised I was wearing a Star Wars: Episode II top and needlessly blabbed, “I only brought it for the gym but I haven’t had time to go and I’ve run out of clean washing. I hate the film.”

His face crumpled and I immediately realised he’d spotted only the big STAR WARS lettering, in red, and missed the tiny Episode II legend – clearly he thought it was a Last Jedi shirt. “No, this is Attack Of The Clones!” I yelped. “I love your Star Wars movies.”

It sounded sycophantic and insincere, and his curdled reply was both suspicious and embarrassed: “Riiiiiight.”

PERSONAL PAIN

Thankfully for me, though sadly for the interview, our blundering exchange was swiftly obliterated by another writer’s attempt to pursue a ‘personal angle’.

Journo: “In Don Quixote and BlacKkKlansman, both of your characters are Jewish.” Driver: [silence] Journo: “Is that intentional?” Driver: “I don’t decide.” Journo: “But what does it mean to you?” Driver: “What does it mean to me?”

Journo: “As a Jewish man, what does it mean to you to play Jewish characters?” Driver: “I’m not Jewish.” Journo: “You’re not Jewish?” Driver: “No.” Journo: “I thought you were.” Driver: “No.”

PR person to group: “Last question, please.”

Same journo, refusing to let anyone else have a chance: “What are you?” Driver: “What am I?” Journo: “What religion?” Driver: “We’ll skip that one.”

And then, with Driver departing, the rancid cherry on top: “How does it feel to not be Jewish?” the journo cheerfully called out in a woeful attempt to defuse the tension. We’ll never know as Driver just kept on walking.

Thoughts : Starship Troopers (1997)

For years, I used to shoot down any notion that Starship Troopers was a classic movie.  Many, many of my friends with excellent taste in movies attempted to persuade me otherwise, and like I fool, I didn’t listen.  After hearing lots of critical evaluation of the film, particularly that of Rob Ager, I realized something : I failed to see the movie for what it really was.  I had been taking the movie at face value, and for that reason alone, I failed to see the genius of it, but all that has changed now.

It’s the 23rd century, and Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is a young man in love with Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards), a fellow student with aspirations to be a pilot in the Federation.  The armed force was created to defend Earth against Arachnids (or Bugs, as they’re commonly referred to), a threat that has emerged as a response to Earth’s explorations and colonization of space.  Many of Carmen and Rico’s fellow students have become Citizens (members of the Federation) in hopes of gaining rights and proving themselves to their peers, and Carmen’s journey to become a pilot, in combination with her obviously developing feelings for fellow pilot candidate Zander Barcalow (Patrick Muldoon), causes Rico to become a Citizen as well, albeit as an infantry member.  Rico quickly ascends to become squad leader, but an unfortunate call during a live round exercise results in the death of a fellow squad member.  Career Sgt. Zim (Clancy Brown) stands up for Rico, who is publicly punished, but despite this, Rico decides the Federation is not for him.  With one foot out the door, however, tragedy strikes in the form of a Bug invasion, resulting in the deaths of Rico’s parents, friends and former residents of the annihilated Buenos Aires, where Rico is from.  With no home to go to, and a newly found desire for revenge, Rico rededicates himself to the Federation, now at war with the Bugs.

The American military has always had a way of subtly dehumanizing the enemy in order to gain popular favor for conflict, and Starship Troopers certainly embodies that idea by literally making the enemy Bugs.  With the military being such a key element of their society, it must be sustained with no end in sight in order to thrive, and this dehumanization of enemies allows that sustainability.  Furthermore, designating non-military as ‘civilians’ and military as ‘citizens’ continues to drive that idea home, as anyone who thrives any stature is almost forced to join for access to what seem like inalienable rights.  This wouldn’t be an issue if the military had a fixed set of morals and goals, but as they learn more about the enemy, the culture shifts, which causes a sort of schizophrenic nature among the ranks as those deemed unimportant suddenly have value.  All of these elements, as well as the zealotry found in those who partake and support in the military, completely demonstrate the concept of the ‘fog of war’.

As previously mentioned, my prior interactions with this movie found me taking it very literally and at face value, as if they were going for a proper science fiction film that checks all the boxes.  It took learning about the director and his intentions with the film, however, to finally understand the genius levels of satire and commentary found within the frames of Starship Troopers.  In terms of satire, it is a complete send-up of both space and war movies, leaning heavily into the tropes found in those genres and using them to propel characters towards (mostly) tragedy.  In terms of commentary, its stance taken on the military is a scathing one.  The film does not hold back when turning the microscope towards the effect it has on families and relationships (both romantic and otherwise).  The fact that ‘administrative punishment’ is still used in such a technologically advanced society is also a bit of a dig at how the military ‘forms’ career soldiers (or, if you base their role on the punishment given to them, ‘slaves’). 

For a film made in the 1990s, the special effects hold up surprisingly well, especially the aliens.  A solid integration of internet and news media-style presentation seemed to be a glimpse into the future of what communication would eventually evolve into.  Despite the film’s lighter tone at times, the violence is incredibly hyper-realistic, both in casual and combat scenes, which helps create a sense of danger and high-stakes in what would otherwise be a dark comedy.  With all going on in the writing, the ability to have Rico as the center of both a love triangle and a separate unrequited, doomed romance still worked incredibly and surprisingly well.

Casper Van Dien manages to make his character pitiful enough in the beginning that his eventual transformation into a career military man is both jarring and equally convincing.  Dina Meyer and her singular parallel focus on becoming military and winning Rico’s heart makes her short-lived victory on both fronts incredibly heartbreaking.  Denise Richards plays enough of a tease to make you care for Rico, but is self-driven enough for us to not completely dismiss her character.  Jake Busey brings a much needed sense of levity and a character that the audience can easily relate to.  Neil Patrick Harris managed to break himself out of his child star shell with this role, playing young enough for his high ranking to fall into a sort of mental uncanny valley territory.  Patrick Muldoon provides a solid foundation for the main love triangle to be formed upon, with his smugness and arrogance being the characteristics that drive him.  Patrick Muldoon, Clancy Brown, and Michael Ironside are all perfectly cast as military leaders.  Seth Gilliam turns in a memorable performance early in his career as a standout member of the Roughnecks.  Amy Smart, Rue McClanahan and Brenda Strong also make memorable appearances.

Films like Starship Troopers continually remind me how good art can subvert expectations, as well as remind me how much time can change our personal perspectives.  For as much as I love Robocop and consider it to be top-tier Paul Verhoeven work, I think I can safely say I’ve been converted to the camp that considers Starship Troopers a grossly underrated cult classic.
