Note: i wrote this while listening to “si tu m’aimes demain’ by iliona + the intro is inspired by 500 days of summer, so that’s basically the vibe of the story 😋 Ik there isn’t a market for GG fics but I just love me some Jess.
Tumblr media
SUMMARY | Jess says something about how it’s a shame that people arent as beautiful and interesting as books, but he looks at [Name] and realizes that she could be the only person who could be compared to the books he loves.
Tumblr media
The soft glow of Luke’s Diner’s sign casts a warm ambience onto the quiet street, the last remnants of daylight as it settles to the night sky.
Inside, the diner was practically buzzing with people, the sounds of plate clattering and a few conversations filled the air.
Ring. The sound of someone coming inside alerted Jess but he didn’t bother to stand up from the bar stool.
“The Old Man and the Sea? I love Hemingway!”
Jess was so caught up in his world that he failed to notice the girl seated next to him at the diner countertop. “Excuse me?”
“I said I love Hemingway,” She repeated, now gaining Jess’ full attention. “You have good taste in books.”
“Thanks, uhh?” — “[Name]” The girl said with a smile. ‘A pretty name for a pretty face’ thought Jess, looking at the girl beside him up and down.
“If you read Hemingway, I’d suggest Bukowski if you’re into poetry.” She recommended, looking down at her nails as she was slightly nervous by the way the boy was looking at her.
“I take it you like classics.” Said Jess, putting down his book.
“Oh, I like any genre! Mystery, historical, sci-fi… you name it.” Smiled [Name] as she rambled about her interests.
Jess found it adorable. “Quite the bibliophile, aren’t ya?”
“Guess you could say that, stranger.”
He was just about to ask for her number when someone came behind the counter.
“Jess, your break’s over.” Said Luke, glancing over the teenagers in front of him.
“Well, duty calls.” Sassed Jess, grabbing his book by the counter but not without giving the girl a wink. “Bye, stranger.”
Tumblr media
Ever since that day, Jess couldn’t seem to get [Name] out of his mind and it didn’t help that she was everywhere; the quaint bookstore, at school, the library, even at the Walmart he works at, and that’s at Hartford!
If Jess had learned anything by being [Name]’s friend is that he knew that the way to her heart was to challenge her.
The two could make a conversation about just about anything, whether it was debating the end of The Bell Jar or trying to find the best coffee place in New Haven.
When she talked about her favourite books, Jess had the time of his life listening to the passion in her voice. And it wasn’t only him. Whenever Jess talks, [Name] sounds like she’s actually interested in whatever he’s talking about.
They’d exchange books, they’d lend each other books and return them fully annotated with their own opinions. They’d have study dates after school, which skyrocketed Jess’ grades by a ton and he even helped [Name] out with her AP classes. They’d go to each other’s houses to have movie nights, [Name] would pick some kind of chick-flick and he’d be “mad” at first and then grow on to love it.
Every time he spent time with her, his blooming crush would only grow and grow. At some point, he realised that his feelings for [Name] went beyond simple platonic attraction and not only did that scare him from having a genuine friend at Stars Hollow but it was how he couldn’t contain it.
Not to mention, Luke started to get sceptical when Jess said he was going to school. Since when did Jess actually go to school?
“I’m leaving!” Shouted Jess with a book bag slung across his shoulder as he closed the door.
Luke’s curiosity got the best of him and he followed Jess to a house. He knew it, Jess was lying, again. But right before he was about to reprimand him, a girl who seemed about Jess’ age walked out of the house, she looked a little familiar.
The two seemed to talk to each other for a bit before walking back… in Luke’s direction.
Luke had no choice but to hide in the prickly bushes to remain hidden from his nephew’s sight… ouch.
Later that Day
“Why’d you got a bandaid on your nose?” Asked Jess, referring to Luke’s earlier injury.
“It’s nothi- just shut up.” Challenged Luke as he walked over to refill a few coffee mugs.
Tumblr media
A few hours passed until closing time and the diner was starting to get empty. Just when Luke was about to clean the countertops, the front door opened. It was the same girl Jess was with before.
She approached the counter with a friendly smile, the kind of smile Luke hadn't seen in a while.
"Hi, is Jess here?" Asked [Name], her eyes wandered around the diner.
Almost on cue, Jess walks out of the kitchen and greets the girl with a smile. “Oh, great. Are we throwing a fiesta or organising a pity party? 'Cause, you know, I'm just on the edge of my seat here.” Babbled Jess.
"Jess, I got a 95 on AP Bio!" The girl excitedly says, holding a paper in the air. "Really? Let me see," he replies, walking over to her.
“What, you don’t believe me? Well, it’s there and it’s in a big red mark with the words ‘Fantastic’!” She eagerly hands it over, her eyes shining with pride.
“Look at that, Ms. Fantastic,” Smiled Jess as he looked over her paper. “You hungry? It’s Danish day. C’mon it’ll be my treat.”
After hearing the news, [Name] gasped, “It’s like the stars were aligned” She giggled, taking a seat at the nearby table.
Once Jess walked over to the counter to grab a freshly cooked Danish, Luke cornered the boy.
"So, what's the deal with you and that girl?” he asked, his tone more curious than accusatory.
Jess shrugged, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. "Just helping her out with her AP classes. Turns out, I’ve got a brain in this pretty little head of mine."
Luke raised an eyebrow sceptically. "And since when did you become the tutor type?"
Jess rolled his eyes, “I like her, she reads Hemingway.” He said as he looked at [Name] who was still walking on cloud nine.
Luke nodded, understanding dawning in his eyes. "She’s a good influence on you, kid. Don’t screw this one up, okay?"
Jess scoffed, but there was a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Yeah, well, don't go spreading that around. I've got a reputation to maintain."

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT — JESS MARIANO
Tumblr media
masterlist
pairing: jess mariano x reader
description: decorating luke’s for christmas reminds you how far from festive jess is. but it might also lead to confessions that put him much more in the christmas spirit.
warnings: little swearing. fluff !!!
author’s note: shoutout to i’ll be home for christmas in this imagine is because it’s my all time fave xmas film and i had a HUGE crush on jonathan taylor thomas as a child because of it. it’s also not super long but i made sure it’s not too short… anyway ENJOY! <3
“Y’know, I don’t see why you have to be such a Grinch,” you pulled the candy cane from between your lips as Jess scoffed, “All Luke asked was for us to put up a few decorations. Even he has more fucking Christmas spirit than you!”
Jess rolled his eyes, “Oh sure, because I’m usually so enthusiastic about stuff like this. How out of character of me,” he paused to touch his forehead with the back of his hand, “I must be getting ill.”
You tutted, placing the last of your candy cane back into your mouth with a crunch! and folding your arms across your chest.
He quirked his brow, waiting for a snarky response that never came.
Instead, you turned on your heels and headed over to the stereo, flicking the switch and resuming the Christmas CD you’d been listening to before he’d grumpily trundled down the stairs into the diner.
“Oh God,” Jess groaned, “Do you seriously enjoy torturing me?”
You scoffed, “Do you want the honest answer?”
It was at that moment Luke briefly poked his head round the corner, “What are you two bickering about now?”
You crossed your arms over your chest as Jess did the exact same thing, except with a huge wad of tinsel now attached to his sweater.
He waved his arm around frantically as you burst out laughing at his desperate attempt to rid himself of the sparkly red decoration, “For fu—,”
“Ask Ebenezer Scrooge over here,” you teased, freeing Jess of the tinsel by yanking it away as Luke rolled his eyes, “Just help her out, Jess.”
“What does it look like I’m doing?”
“Being a moron.”
“Fork found in kitchen,” you mumbled, earning a glare from Jess, “We’re nearly done, c’mon.”
Jess fought back a smirk, folding his arms again and shaking his head, “You’re a pain in the ass, Y/N.”
“At least I’m a festive pain in the ass,” you sing-songed, twirling tinsel around the cash register as he laughed at you, “Hey, I can see a smile there! He can smile! What a heartthrob. I could almost mistake you for Jonathan Taylor Thomas in I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”
“I look like who from what?” Jess contorted his face in confusion, unsure whether what you were saying was a compliment.
Kirk appeared out of nowhere beside you both, an inquisitive expression on his face, “Jonathan Taylor Thomas from the 1998 Christmas movie I’ll Be Home for Christmas. I have to say I think you’re wrong though, Y/N. He doesn’t have nearly as much of his boyish charm.”
You burst out laughing again, clasping your hand to your mouth as you watched Jess blush just a little as he stood slack-jawed.
“Boyish charm? I’ve got plenty of boyish charm,” Jess scoffed, puffing out his chest, “Why do I look like him anyway?”
“Oh, you don’t,” Kirk shrugged, “Y/N just has a crush on him and a crush on you.”
“Ok that’s quite enough from you Kirk,” It was your turn to blush crimson now as you gestured towards the tables, “We’re not even open yet. You—uh— just go sit down.”
“A crush on me, huh?” Jess was smirking now, and you couldn’t tell if the bubbling in your stomach was sheer embarrassment or excitement at the way he was looking at you.
Obviously, it was both.
You shook your head, “Oh, ‘cause you should totally trust Kirk.”
Jess quirked his eyebrow, “When it comes to town gossip, I’d say I do.”
You looked down at your feet, cheeks still incredibly warm and your heart palpitating so hard you were sure it’d burst out of your chest at any moment.
“You know, you’ve gone bright red. So red in fact that I think it’s put me in a festive mood,” Jess quipped smugly, elbow on the counter as he leaned a little closer to you.
You scoffed, “It took me being embarrassed to feel festive?”
Jess shook his head, and said nothing for a moment.
You wondered whether he was about to embarrass you even further, but his expression softened so much that it confused you.
“No, it took being told that you do like me,” he shrugged, but he was clearly not as nonchalant about it as he was trying to appear, “To save me the embarrassment of a not so festive rejection under the many, many Christmas lights— seriously why do we need so fuckin’ many?”
Your heart swelled at his initial words, but you rolled your eyes yet again at his grumbling about the Christmas lights, “It’s Christmas, Jess. And so pretty.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Jess was quieter as he spoke now, his eyes twinkling as he moved even closer to you, “So pretty.”
Now you were certain that every drop of blood had rushed to your cheeks, the intensity of his stare making you bite your lip and look away again.
His hand lifted up to touch your cheek, drawing your eyes back to meet his.
Your mouth had gone dry, and you couldn’t help but notice how carefully he watched your lips as your tongue swiped over them.
“You—I—We need to finish decorating and open up, Jess,” you stammered, but Jess wasn’t letting you get out of this conversation now.
“If it wasn’t for Kirk, I’d really like to kiss you right now,” he looked briefly away and saw that Kirk had seemingly entirely disappeared, “Oh, it might be my lucky day. Now I’m really feeling festive.”
You giggled, “Then what—what’re you waiting for?”
He didn’t waste a moment after that, immediately capturing your lips with his as you leaned into his chest.
The kiss was short lived, but you almost didn’t mind because your mind was racing at the fact that it was actually even happening at all.
Jess beamed across at you as you pulled back, your eyes locked on each other for a fair few moments of silence.
“I’m finally in the Christmas spirit, Y/N,” he sing-songed as he finally broke the silence, still staring intently at you as you shivered under his gaze, “So much so that I think I’d like to go watch the town Christmas lights being switched on tonight. If you’re up for it. If not, like, whatever. Just a suggestion. Since you love Christmas and—,”
You laughed, placing a hand on his bicep to interrupt his rambling, “I’d really like that, Jess. Even if you are going to drive me nuts complaining about the lights, it’d be nice to go. Like, together.”
Jess seemed pleased with that answer, a broad smile overtaking his face as he leaned in even closer, “It’s a date, then. And now we can get back to decorating.”
You bit your lip, “A date. Woah, Jess Mariano is taking me on a date to see the Christmas lights getting switched on. If I didn’t know any better I’d think I was still tucked up in bed dreaming.”
“I’m in your dreams a lot then, huh?” he teased, the smirk back gracing his features as you gently nudged his arm, “My nightmares, maybe.”
“Hm, guess you dream about that John Tyler guy more then,” he feigned offence, and despite mistaking the name you found his pout incredibly adorable.
You laughed, “Jonathan Taylor Thomas?”
“Mhm.”
“Don’t be jealous, Mariano,” you hummed, leaning into his side as you teased him.
“I’m not jealous,” he grunted, “What does he even look like anyway?”
You giggled, and he didn’t seem impressed by the way you went straight into your head thinking about the actor, “You’ll find out later when I force you to come back to mine and watch it with me after the lights are on.”
“No fuckin’ way!” he shook his head, and you forced a pout until he sighed, “Fine. Only because I like you. And I’m choosing our takeout if I’m going to be third-wheeling you and the TV on our first date.”
You grinned, “Fine by me. It’s a date!”
“A date? Finally, kid,” Luke reemerged for a moment again, poking his head around the corner of the kitchen.
“He’s taking me to see the Christmas lights being switched on,” you grinned, watching Luke’s brief shocked expression being quickly replaced by a small smile.
“The lights?” he repeated, and you nodded.
“I knew he liked you, I mean the whole town did. But it looks like he must really like you, huh?”
“Yeah,” you basically whispered, looking over at Jess for a moment and seeing him smiling softly at you despite his irritation at his uncle poking his nose in, “I guess he does.”
———

cw: angsty, unexpected pregnancy, but otherwise fluff??

Tumblr media
When you got pregnant, it was…unexpected—not planned whatsoever. You were only sixteen, not ready to raise a kid, of all things. But you couldn’t find it in yourself to give it up. And when your daughter was born, it made all the pain worth it. She was ethereal.
She was three years old now, full of personality, a lover of all things squishy. She preferred to hide behind you in the grocery store than talk to people, but she smiled at every book she saw and pet every dog you passed. Even with all of that, she didn’t have her Dad.
It wasn’t surprising that Jess got freaked out and ran when she was firstborn. You guys were just friends who hooked up, and suddenly you were pregnant. With the way his life went, it didn’t surprise you. But it hurt; it made you so angry you wanted to scream. You endured, though; you had to.
That’s why it was unexpected when an unknown number called you in the middle of the day.
“Hello?” You answered, shoving the phone between your shoulder and head as you finished cutting some carrot sticks for a snack. There was breathing at the other end of the line, and for a second, you worried something nefarious was at play. “I will call the cops—“
“Don’t,” the voice said, the familiar baritone New York accent you had spent years learning. The intonations, the snark—you knew it like the back of your hand.
“Jess?” You guessed, setting down the kitchen knife and holding the phone tightly.
“I, uh….fuck,” you heard him swear on the other line. You didn’t say anything; just let him work out whatever he wanted as you tried your best to control your breath. “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“How are you?”
“Really,” you deadpanned. “Three years, and that’s all you got?”
“I don’t know what to say to you,” Jess sighed. “I thought I did, but, fuck, hearing your voice…” He didn’t elaborate, but he didn’t have to. You knew all too well. You were experiencing that same feeling right now. “I’m sorry.”
“I…appreciate that,” you coughed.
“I want to see you and…”
“Her, Maria,” you responded. It occurred to you that Jess never learned your kid's name. He wasn’t around long enough for that.
“Maria,” he said, feeling the name around his tongue. I want to try.”
You laughed at that, some of that bubbling anger surfacing in a way you hadn’t felt.
“Why now?” You inquired, your fingers tapping on your cutting board.
“I’m ready now,” Jess said, and you could hear that familiar snark you used to love so much.
“I wasn’t ready; I just had to deal with it,” you seethed, and it took a deep breath to help you not start yelling. “I didn’t get that choice.”
“I know, god, I’m…sorry.”
You don’t remember the last time Jess ever really apologized for anything.
“You can’t choose to show back up because it’s convenient.”
“Y/N…” his sigh was evident on the other line. “Please, let me be better.”
You were silent for a few moments, contemplating everything—whether it was worth it, whether you wanted to try. You rubbed your eyes as if it would clear your head.
“Lunch,” you sighed. “You get a lunch with us. And only if Maria wants to. It’s her choice whether she wants you in her life or not. Alright?”
“Alright,” the relief was evident in his voice, and you tampered down any softness that might undermine your frustration.
“Alright.”
Lunch happened at Lou’s, a deli you frequented with your daughter. It was public, safe, but neutral territory that helped you see Jess again after so many years. You almost didn’t recognize him when he came in, even though he looked exactly the same. He just seemed…older. You guess you were, too.
Maria was quiet during lunch, picking at her sandwich and sending shy glances towards her father. You didn’t realize that they had the same eyes, the same suspicious furrow of their brow that showed how intelligent they were. You convinced yourself she had none of him at all.
One lunch became two, then three. Then it was routine to get lunch. At some point, it became dinners. Eventually, you let Jess take Maria out, just the two of them. She’d come home with a smile and some book he bought her. He introduced her to the Ramones (you thought she was a little young, but it wasn’t terrible, so you let it pass). She sometimes would mumble the words “Judy is a Punk” to herself while she read.
Jess became such a staple of your life that you allowed yourself to open up to him again. He was writing, getting his GED, and working on opening a publishing press with some friends. He was excited to hear you were still in college and hadn’t given up. He said the saddest thing that could’ve become of you was never realizing your potential. You had to hide your flush when he said it.
One night, when Maria was asleep, and the two of you were picking up toys in the living room, he asked you to move in with him.
“Can you even support that many people?” You scoffed, piling her books on one of the side counters.
“Yes.”
“Why?” you inquired, standing with your hands on your hips. Why was the question that haunted you throughout this entire experience. Why did he call? Why does he care? Why did he leave? Your life was dominated by the second-to-last letter of the alphabet—why?
“You guys are my family,” Jess breathed, fingers twiddling from nerves. You raised a brow, wanting more of an answer. “I had a revelation, after spending time with my Uncle…that I was terrible. I want to be better.”
You took a breath before answering. “Where do you live?”
“Stars Hollow.”
“Where’s that?”
“Connecticut.”
Your eyes bulged from your head, and if you had a drink, you would’ve spit it out.
“Jess!” You exclaimed. “That’s three hours away!”
“I’m aware since I’m the one who travels it,” Jess said, his hands in his pockets, indicating obvious discomfort. You were wrapping your brain around the fact that Jess traveled three hours every week just to get lunch with you—with your daughter—and he had never brought it up. Something shifted in your mind about that. “Look…”
“Jess–”
“I want to try again.”
“Another baby?” you exclaimed, and Jess put a hand up to his face and groaned.
“No, Jesus Christ,” he swore. He cut you off before you could say anything else. “I was a complete idiot for leaving you, for leaving Maria. I don’t deserve half the kindness you’ve given me, but, fuck, I want to try this…family thing. I want to try with you.” Jess shoved his hands in his pockets, reminding you so much of his teenage self that it was almost painful. “I want to try with us.”
It took you a second to decipher what he was saying, and you felt your eyes widen. You were never actually in a relationship with Jess, just two friends who had drank too much one night. But you always cared. You loved everything in his nature up until he left. With him back, you remembered why you felt so much in the first place.
“Okay,” you stammer, watching Jess’ eyes widen with disbelief. “Let’s try. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen?”
“We hate each other?”
“I’m looking forward to it,” you chuckle, and that coaxes a similar laugh out of Jess. You both end up dissolving into laughter, something raw and so unlike the layer of the past that has haunted you guys for the past months. It felt like a dam opening up, everything crashing down but resolving into something tangible.
A few weeks later, you move to Stars Hollow, your meager items in matching luggage. The college agreed to let you finish your degree online, and you find work at the Dragonfly Inn. The town is much more colorful and friendly than the New York you are used to. Still, you find yourself loving it—just as you find yourself loving Jess, how he responds to your daughter, and the apparent way he’s grown up.
Yes, it was unexpected. But not unwanted.

Your first date with Jess was going to the mall to play arcade games. On that note, he'd probably get too competitive playing with you or even innocent bystanders who just wanted to have fun.
“I’m sorry, babe, I got too focused,” — “Talk to the hand, Mariano.”
Loves to walk around town with his hand over your shoulders.
He'd spend all day showing you new CDs or books he bought from the store.
“Just snagged this new book earlier. It's like a trip into the Twilight Zone meets Plato on steroids.”
If you two share a class, he'd flash you a wink or a smile from across the room that makes you almost instantly blush.
Jess loves watching you get ready whether you're doing your skincare or make-up. He won't mind if you take a while to get ready for your hangout.
"Okay, what the hell do you mean you’re baking? You baking your face now or what?“
It went to the point where you did his makeup for fun, and he had fun too, mostly because you sat on his lap the entire time.
You wear his oversized sweaters, even if it's a little worn out, you love it because it's Jess'.
His weakness is you playing with his hair.
When it's too cold for Jess' liking, he'd immediately hold your hand.
“Jess, it’s summer.” — “So what? Global warming is serious, you know? All these cold surges can’t get any worse.” — “It’s 30°C.”
Taylor loves you because you keep Jess busy instead of running around destroying town property. P.S: you get discounts at the market.
