im asking abt modpack design. what makes a good modpack? Is that the same as a balanced modpack? how many way are there to work around mods not wanting to coexist & how much work usually goes into packs you make?
Ive slapped together a few packs for myself that took a few allnighters back when i wasnt sleeping anyway lol. then wanted to play with friends and had to slim it down to something all our pcs could handle.... fun times
oh boy here we go... What makes a good modpack is simply: Fun. Not every good modpack is balanced, and not every balanced modpack is good. Generally, the more balanced a modpack is, the better it is, but you can have crazy op superflyingdragonkilling ultra 9000 swords and still have lots of fun with them, as long as they aren't literally made out of dirt. An example I like to use when people ask "well how could an unbalanced modpack be fun?" is the Minecraft but X is OP! type datapacks that are pretty common in clickbait YouTube thumbnails. Those are really fun to mess around with! Balanced? Oh gods no. But sometimes how ludicrous it is can be the fun in and of itself. A balanced modpack is one where your power level as a player is roughly proportionate to how much time you invest into it. It's roughly self explanatory but can be a bit hard for me to put an example to with something in regular minecraft. Another, minor aspect of a good modpack imo is the environment and ambient atmosphere of everything. If you have a mod with mspaint sprites that are plastered everywhere, it's gonna ruin immersion and make the game less serious, which is a big component of keeping a modpack engaging and therefore fun. In terms of getting mods to work that just refuse to? For some performance related backend mods there are alternatives (LazyDFU and DataFixerSlayer, Rubidium/Sodium and Embeddium, etc.) that could solve issues, but more often that not, if it's a crash, you just gotta cope and take one of them out of the pack. If it's a not crash related issue, for example for balance or something related to, you can always remove the mobs / items / anything else that is causing issues with mods like Bad Mobs, You Shall Not Spawn, or Item Obliterator. I usually put 1-2 weeks of work into a good serious modpack, but I mostly make kitchen sinks, and the longest project I ever worked on personally took me around 2 months to fully complete and be ready. Custom textures, modifying datapacks, tweaking mods and finding new ones, all to create an intensely immsersive atmosphere for a roleplay server that never ended up going live. (yeouch) Slimming down modpacks is honestly tough, but I just like to focus on a direct theme or two. Earlier this week I had a pack with 218 mods that i slimmed down to just under 100 by cutting out chaff and really focusing on the 3 lines of progression the people wanted. (Tech, Magic, Adventure) If you ever want help making a modpack for anything, hmu! DM me here and I'll toss you my discord :D (this goes for anyone)

What kind of Minecraft player would every 1b member be?Like if there was a Private UA server world and 20 computers with Minecraft on it,what would happen?
Not proofread we die like men
Awase - he likes to make hidden rooms and mini bases in other peoples areas in case he ever needs to stay the night there or smthn (hes never used a single one)
Sen - he has no food, no house and no tools but he is 20,000 blocks away from spawn looking for that one 'perfect spot' still (he aint gonna find it)
Kamakiri - hes homeless but is a god a pvp. He will walk into other ppls bases and they let him stay simply because they know he could beat their ass lmao
Kuroiro - he builds this massive gothic mansion in the middle of nowhere but when it comes to actual advancement hes stuck on iron
Kendo - she would be the richest on the server if it wernt for the fact that she keeps giving her dimonds to everyone around her.
Kodai - she has a cute little cottage in the middle of the woods where she lives with a few of the girls. She mostly builds automatic farms to improve their area
Komori - she shares an area with kodai. She builds everything and they all have the cutest cottage core vibes to it. She also has every kind of flower in the game all around their area :>
Shiozaki - she is the best at landscaping and making the nature look unique and intricate while also looking natural. But she cant build buildings to save her life.
Shishida - he probably stays close to spawn and makes the entire area safe and spawn proof so anyone who died and didn't set spawn doesn't have to worry about creepers and things like that. He provides them food and some basic armor too.
Shoda - he probably rarely logs on and when he does he simply talks with his friends while his character stands completely still slowly starving to death.
Pony - she either builds things from her favorite animes or she lives in a hole that she carved in the wall. She probably doesnt live in the girls base but shes extremely close to them.
Tsubaraba - dude has been killed by an armor stand. He doesn't know how he did it but he did it. Other than dying to everything you can possibly die from he likes to fill peoples bases with chickens.
Tetsutetsu - he got on the server and didnt get off until he beat the final boss of the game. After that he built his on mojo dojo casa house and started his farmer life
Tokage - she travels alot to constantly check in with what her class mates are doing. She doesnt have a set place she stays but she has multiple holes in the walls all around the map. Shes the only one who knows where everything is.
Manga - spends all of his time making banners and cool map art to randomly shove in other peoples houses. Hes homeless and poor though.
Honenuki - he spends most of his time wandering around and helping everyone else with whatever project they've been working on. He helps his classmates collect wood, mine, kill monsters whatever they rlly need help with ykyk?
Bondo - he picked a spot for his house and he refuses to leave. He stays in his area and farms, never exsplores and never mines... only farms (He also gives everyone food when they come by his area)
Monoma - he just went around killing peoples animals and blowing up their bases until he was banned lmao
Reiko - idk why but i think she would be amazing at pvp but other than killing her friends (in game) she doesn't log on often. She will spend time at the girls base and afk their auto farms for them though
Rin - hes the one that somehow is much farther in the game than everyone else but hes been playing the same ammount of time. Like everyone else is making a starter house while hes mining out the end for a mega base

Listen. Listen. Are you looking for new hermits to watch? No? You should be! Hermits are all great and there's not too much to backlog this season, so you want to get on that!
Welcome to a Semicomprehensive list of hermits by someone who watches (almost) everyone. I will not be including welsknight, xisuma, hypnotizd, Mumbo or Grian in this post as I do not watch Wels, hypno or X and Grian is Grian and Mumbo is Mumbo, and the chances are that you've probably heard about them.
Do you want insane builds and some of the Noises ever made from a human mouth? Try bdubs! Bdoubleo100 uses a lot of experimental editing in his videos, with strange camera angles, cuts with transitions that are just him sneezing, or experimental zooms in his intros. He's an incredible builder and has mastered the art of small interiors, and his redstone is compact, pretty, and functional, even though he once spent a very long time on a complex farm before his daughter pointed out he could change which pickaxe he was using.
Cubfan is the hermit for you if you want wacky technical Minecraft, unusual ideas and off the walls grinds for difficult to farm materials. Last season he made a dripstone, red sand, raw iron and rooted dirt custom biome, and he often does speedruns over on his twitch. This season he's teamed up with Ren, building a house in his basement.
Do you want game breaking technical skills? Farms you wouldn't think possible? Weird taste in what farms are normal and sane to build? As long as your brain can process deep voices, Docm77 is the hermit for you! He's got a hive mind of technical Minecrafters behind every farm and is racing against Mojang to exploit glitches before they're patched. Who knows, maybe dinnerbone will take his other arm for this.
Etho hasn't yet returned to hermitcraft, as he's on hiatus to take care of his parents, but when he's back he's full of wacky hyjinks, strange farms and builds with insane palettes. He's been doing Minecraft since the very beginning, giving many their start and teaching many a Minecrafter a thing or two.
Falsesymmetry is a PVP powerhouse, and being the queen of heads, hearts and body parts she can and will go head to head with the best of the best. She's also an incredible builder, organics and massive digs comprising many of her recent projects. She's witty and cool and her builds are often out of this world.
Do you like your Minecrafters sweet and terrifying? Geminitay keeps ravagers as cows and doesn't blanch at taking on a woodland mansion on day one. She freehands statues, bonemeals custom trees into existence, and stays upbeat and positive through it all.
You've probably heard of goodtimeswithscar, with his improv prowess, incredible terraforming and absolutely insane, detailed builds. He's absolutely hilarious, taking the bit to the extreme, but don't let the bumbling exterior fool you, the man is scarily competent when he remembers to check his elytra durability.
Ijevin is a mix of technical and beautiful, with detailed builds and fascinating ideas, but he's also one of the more prolific farm builders of the hermitcraft server. While he may not invent quite as many farms, he almost always builds scarily productive farms with hours of work put into them.
Impulsesv is an incredibly creative technical YouTuber, known often for his mob wrangling and creative theming for his builds and inventions. When it comes to interactions he's not lacking either, fitting into any group with laughter and ease.
Another super, mega, dare I say Omega YouTuber is Iskall, whose infectious laugh and creative time lapses never fail to brighten up a day. He's chill, and he often builds whatever comes to mind, be it a carrot hill or a villager encampment, and all of them look incredible.
Coming to you as he always does from Nashville Tennessee, joehills spends much of his time on the server on community projects, teaming up with Cleo, or simply making the Joehills difference. His videos aren't as fast-paced as some other hermits, but he streams frequently and is simply a joy to watch.
Do you like your family friendly YouTubers toeing the line? Do you like your guys to know what a house looks like? Then keralis is the guy for you! His builds remain grounded while at an incredible scale, and each time he makes an innuendo, his voice is so calming you can almost believe he doesn't do it on purpose. Almost.
Pearlescentmoon makes building an art form with gorgeous colors, organics with incredible detail and the small tendency to rotate her builds 90° if she's not happy with them. She's energetic, off the walls bouncy, and she never fails to bring a smile to the face and awe to the server.
Do you want lore with that? Get your lore with rendog, the official Lore Guy of the hermitcraft server. His lore carried over, landing gigapods and making gigapies after the disaster that ended the last server, with instructions from his alien compatriots and a significant amount of yes, and.
Stressmonster has earned her rightful place in the hermitcraft hall of chaos, full of giggles and excitement, not a moment of her videos are ever dull. She's in awe of it all, excited by everything in the game and incredibly creative in all of her builds. Who else builds a teapot as a starter base?
Do you want ravagers? You can get ravagers with tangotek, builder of insane farms, with off the walls redstone and an affinity for one of the game's most dangerous mobs. He's best known for inventing the iron farm, creating a new version of it each season, and for Decked Out, the mini game he's revamping this season with Even More Ravagers, Wardens, and who knows, maybe a captured wither or two.
Tfc is like when you're watching your friend or family member play Minecraft, just doing the every day tasks, mining, mining, more mining. He puts the hermit in hermitcraft, but as the server's resident grandpa, he's allowed to take it slower than the crazy kids around him.
Vintagebeef is like when you take a man who is absolutely Not normal and wrap him up in a veneer of Just Some Guy. His videos are calmer and chiller than many of the hermits, but his projects are by no means small... I'm not going to spoil anything, but if you're a fan of map art, you should absolutely check him out.
Xbcrafted deserves his spot in the Hermitcraft Hall Of Should Absolutely Cuss. He is straining at the confines of the family friendly content, and when he and keralis are together, only good things happen. Being one of the shyer members of the server, he's also fairly calm, but he and keralis also make up the flirting quota of the server.
Zedaph lives up to his mad scientist base of season eight, making the game interesting with insane challenges submitted by viewers for him to complete for retextured pumpkins and bragging rights. He's into automation in the most inefficient method, because redstone is meant to be funny, not maximum output.
And finally, last but not least, zombiecleo themself! They're a master at armor stands, a skill few can claim, and also a stunning builder. Going for a mythological type of vibe for this season, they've recently changed their hair to snakes, all the more ways to terrify bdubs. They're sarcastic and witty, and I thoroughly recommend their videos for a good time.
As always, every hermit has something to enjoy, and don't limit yourself! Poke your head in a video, check it out, even if you're not sure you'll like it! Who knows, you could find your new favorite!

I wasn't initially such a big fan of the simulation thing, because I kind of hate stuff where it's like 'oooh it's all a dream" or "ooooh it's a simulation!" But I think I'm okay with this. Mostly for one reason: it's only season 8 that is a simulation. Hermitcraft is real and exists in-universe as a place and a group of people. The other seasons weren't simulations. I was afraid at first they would go the route of full simulation like, fourth wall breaking "we're all video game characters being watched by people on youtube" sort of simulation. And, some fourth wall breaking did happen in hermatrix.
But at the end? No, there's a story reason why this is happening. It's to protect the hermits from a virus. They will wake up and S9 will proceed and be real. Stuff is being carried out by hermitcraft characters like Renbob. I like this because, well--I'm kind of attached to my headcanons of the minecraft world. Different servers existing in one universe, MCC connecting everyone, mega servers like hypixel, mechanics for world-hopping, etc. In my mind, Hermitcraft is a place that is separate from our irl reality on Earth and it is distinct because setting something within minecraft departs it from our reality (there's different physics. there's magic.) And I wanted to preserve that. It wouldn't have been fun for me if the gotcha was that it's a video game--we know that, we're watching it!
But this is narrative for the hermitcraft storyline overall, and gives us insight into their world. S8 was a simulation, but it still felt real to them and if it felt real then...maybe it is real. They would have memories still, wouldn't they? But more importantly to me, the hermits are all still real within the hermitcraft storyline and universe. They were just stuck in a simulation for a few months, but they're out now.

HBomb watching Grian’s world tour.
It’s like 1h 30mins long with the commentary. Here’s some highlights lol. Keep in mind most of this is paraphrased :P
*seeing Grian has 61 eps* Hermitcraft is nuts. They are so invested and talented.”
“Did they makes little railing things to send messages to each other? That’s the cutest thing ever. It’s like when you’re living on treehouses with your next door neighbour.” OK HBOMB WAIT TILL YOU SEE THE SEASON WHEN REN AND FALSE LITERALLY LIVE IN THE SAME AREA.
Grian, about the mansion: It’s lacking soul
H: WHERE??
H FREAKING OUT ABT STRESS’S BUTTERFLIES
About Grian’s chest monsters: “I’m starting to realize me and Grian have a lot in common.”
“You can give villagers dragon heads?”
He was stunned into silence by Scar’s Big Dig. For like fifteen seconds. Just gaping.
About the Big Dig: that’s more work by Scar than we put into Dream SMP
AND YEAH HE HASN’T EVEN SEEN THE SHOPPING DISTRICT???
About Mumbo’s base: “This is so beautiful”
H said people really under appreciate Minecraft grass and leaves. YEAH HE’S ON TEAM HEP LMAO.
He smiled so much at Grian and Mumbo’s shenanigans lol.
He screamed “ISKALL!” the moment the Omega Tree came into view. And he proudly told chat “I KNOW THAT GUY!”
H legit made the POG face when he saw Stress’ base. “I thought they all lived super far from each other.” “I know Stress too!! She’s on Vault Hunters!”
“I wanna see more of the dragonflies”
“Renpog renpog renpog? That’s my MCC9 Teammate”
About Ren: “he’s nuts”
About Ren’s Darth Vader base: “this would take me a full year to build”
AND THEN REN SAID “<3 <3 <3” in chat
“We love Ren in this chat. Ren’s out of his mind.”
Now he said Ren put in more effort than everyone on DSMP except Sam.
Grian: I struggle with terraforming
H: I struggle with everything compared to the Hermitcrafters.”
“It’s so crazy!” H said while massaging his head.
“Mumbo Baggins.”
“I forgot about Keralis! I haven’t watched him in so long.”
H also stared at Keralis’ build for ten seconds just making the Pog face.
“I can’t tell how big that is. 30 blocks or 300.”
“I feel like there’s always 40 people on the server.” Good try, H. Lol.
Grian fell down Keralis’ hotel’s elevator chute but flew himself to safety. “Grian’s at 3 hearts. Thank God’s he’s so good with an elytra.”
H about graffiti: “Oh I love this”
H saw the Keralis Bee in front of X’s base and instantly made the same face.
Grian admitted he doesn’t watch his friends.
H: as a content creator, it’s very awkward to watch your friends. 100%.
He said Etho was the first MCYT he fanboyed over aaaa
About Etho’s base: ohh it’s so cool
“I love that the beacon is going through the end crystal!”
About Wel’s base:
Grian: I don’t think he’s on very much
H: that’s more than I built in my lifetime
H confusedly squinting and peering at Zedaph’s base lmaoo
About Tango’s base: “that looks straight out of a Doctor Suess novel. I LOVE IT. I LOVE THESE TWO (Tango and Impulse’s) BUILDINGS.”
About Impulse’s base: the quartz and water combined look really cool
Grian, about Impulse’s base: is this mega?
H: y e s
Grian: no
H: that thing is freaking huge. I’ll say that’s mega. That’s huge. It’s mega.
Grian: it’s not mega
H: it goes down the water IT’S MEGA
H ARGUING WITH GRIAN ABOUT MEGA
H stared at Tango’s base for fifteen secs. “I love it. I love it. Chat, have I ever told you I love it.”
“Did he make an iron farm with ravagers?!”
Grian: I don’t know what I’m doing with farms
H: I don’t know what I’m doing 24/7
LMAO BOTH H AND GRIAN BEING CONFUSED BY TANGO’S PEASHOOTER CREEPER FARM
HE RECOGNIZED FALSE’S BASE AYYYY
“She’s nuts, chat”
“When I raid False, I ask my chat to ask her to show her base because it’s so freaking cool”
Grian: is False’s base mega
Grian: this is juuuuust mega
H, screaming: JUST? I’m gonna throw hands with Grian
H: LET’S TALK. CHAT.
Then he proceeded to talk about False’s water at the bottom of her base and how she had to place water sources and blocks (chat told him she used ice, but hey it’s the thought that counts)
“That’s insane, chat!! It’s so cool!”
“I’m ready to throw hands with Grian.”
He wanted to win the mega argument with Grian lol. “Hbomb VS Grian.”
“I actually don’t know what Grian looks like irl. He might beat me up.”
H stared at Cleo’s armour stands. “OHH THAT’S SICK!”
“WHY IS SHE ABLE TO MAKE BETTER MINECRAFT CREATURES THAN MOJANG. EXPLAIN.”
“I’m still mad at you on the megabase thing. Other than that, we’re good.”
He watched False make the Nether hub on Twitch.
Grian: X made this Nether build-
H: X gonna give it to ya
“Ren and False are just built differently.”
H’s face legit froze when he saw Cub’s base. And he bellowed “WHY?!”
H: size matters
“Link’s ready to throw hands with Grian” (Link is H’s dog)
“He managed to make our Targay look absolutely irrelevant.”
“Do you think they’ll let me on to play with them? Just for like, twenty minutes? 🥺👉👈”
“THAT IS DOPE!!”
“Walls made out of ancient debris. Jesus Christ. WHY?!”
Pomo, donation: impulse once raised his base by one block bcz he thought it looked better
H: oh no
“Imagine there was an ancient debris wall on the Dream SMP, chat. It would be there for an hour. Maybe two. Maybe.”
“Doc was another Minecracker”
He was so relieved when he saw Joe’s stuff lol. Since people can be “normal”.
About Mt. Goatmore: OHH THAT’S DOPE!
He went to a Bdubs meet up when he was in college. And had a photo and autograph of Bdubs and Gen.
“Yo that cliff is dope”
About Bdubs’ castle: I won’t be surprised if he used diamond blocks.
“I love how Bdubs use the nether wood trapdoors.”
He loved the anvil droppers thing and said he’s gonna steal the idea. He also mentioned Beef and Mindcrack.
H is such a HC stan now lol. AND HE WANTS TO PLAY THE HC MINIGAMES. PLEASE LET THE MAN ON. Also he’s gonna vibe so well with Grian. Not only do they have similar views in MCC but also in a lot of other things (don’t watch their friends, chest monsters, etc).

I love how ugly the Dream SMP is.
Okay, it's not Ugly ugly, especially nowadays, but last July when it didn't have half of the nice builds it has now, it was easy to call it ugly. And I appreciated that about it.
Last July I had been watching Hermitcraft for the past 10 months and it was Beautiful. Hermitcraft was perfect. Too perfect. I felt like my single-player world had to look like that too. I had only just learned the basics of building things in Minecraft that looked Good thanks to HC but now that I knew what looked good and bad I was too afraid to build! Hermitcraft's perfection made me afraid to play Minecraft because it wouldn't look like their multi-player world that was on hard mode with mega bases and shops and farms and redstone contraptions.
And then I found the Dream SMP. And it was Ugly. There weren't any shops. There weren't any elytras. There were creeper holes and a massive oak slab path that seemed to span the entire length of the server. Tommy's house was a hole in a hill. The only redstone contraption I had seen was a hole in the ground with moving walls that Tubbo had made in an attempt to trap Tommy, who didn't care and immediately broke it to escape. And their nether. God was their nether ugly and hard to traverse. AND THEY DIDN'T CARE!
I learned that it's okay to play Minecraft without being a perfectionist! I loved the server and its creeper holes and random half finished builds scattered across the landscape. Not everything needed to be super efficient or staggeringly impressive. Sometimes you just wanted to play the game the way you wanted to play and that was okay.

🌻⛏️ for the minecraft asks!
MAS MAS HIIII HELLO
🌻(sunflower) what are your favourite biomes? Furthermore which biome feels most like home to you (might not even be your fave!). If you could add new biomes to the game what would they be?
I love flower forests, because they're so pretty! feels really nice and cozy because it mixes plains but elevates it with varied terrain and ah it's so lovely! also has bees
I also like mega spruce taigas, the ones with the boulders!
As for which one feels most like home, probably snowy plains! y'know, the really flat one covered in snow as far as the eye can see. There's a reason I named myself after winter!
Aaaaand what I would add, hmmm. probably more variations of underground biomes! I know we have the huge caves and the deep dark and the lush areas and all that, but I would love an underground cove full of crystals and stained glass alone the ceilings and walls! Other than that, more air biomes! I wanna see small cloud houses and floating islands or expansions of the mushroom fields that add giant mushroom structures!
⛏ (pickaxe) what tools do you always keep with you on your hotbar? What is the most important tool to have on you?
depends what server I'm on! if I'm playing vanilla, I usually just have the standard axe, pickaxe, shovel, and sometimes a sword or shears if I'm adventuring or building!
with modded tools and biomes like in another server, I like having a silk touch axe, any pick, a hammer (basically 3x3 pickaxe), and a shovel just in case. Then everything else is a case of circumstance and what I manage to get and enchant!
I also like having a full netherite hoe on me, one for silk one for fortune. it started as something I did because of how much I saw people going "WHY???" whenever someone upgraded hoes and I thought it was super funny, but it's just become something nice and convenient for me!

different anon, as someone who technically is still a dsmp fan (although at this point i consider myself more a fan of some specific streamers who happen to be on the smp, and haven't watched a dsmp storyline stream since january), everything you said makes complete and total sense. i don't fully agree with every point made, but i agree with most of them, and honestly that -- combined with. y'know. actual person dream being revealed to be... Like That -- are probably main reasons behind my growing disinterest in the server itself. i still really like some of the creators, but. the story's degradation combined with some of the creators i don't like getting steadily worse... i really don't care about the server anymore.
but as someone who has kept up with the more current stuff, i can just say that. basically everyone is cheating off of wilbur's storyline homework in some way or another. quackity's current thing with las nevadas is being regarded as him "drawing parallels" between him and wilbur's character arc, and with wilbur being revived it's being seen as him being a character foil -- i do not think these people know what a narrative foil is, because it's not just a carbon copy -- but in all honesty he's just doing pogtopia wilbur v2. the egg arc has been "resolved" technically, but it less got resolved and more just petered out and died pathetically after a genuinely really good stream (red banquet) where they set up interesting things. it's just. done now.
techno seems to be incapable of allowing his character to develop whatsoever. he never lets his character suffer, never lets him hurt, and even outside of the monotone acting his character never loses anything. he's invincible and that doesn't seem set to change. even now, when he got tricked into being trapped in the prison, he made it clear that his character isn't even remotely bothered by this. does he have a plan to escape? maybe, although if he does it's gonna read as a shoddy deus ex machina because he didn't set anything up aside from "press this button and i teleport out." did he know he was being trapped? it's not clear, he might've known or he might've been just incredibly stupid. it's boring. he's less a character and more a brick wall with a rocket launcher.
and i feel bad for tommy The Person, because he's clearly gotten stuck in a bit of a content mentality. he got a big reaction from his character suffering in pogtopia, so he did the exile arc. the exile arc got a big reaction, so he did more similar things. it feels like he's gotten stuck in the mindset of "the fans like angst, so i need to continue to just endlessly torment my character with no purpose or goal." his "death" had even LESS permanence than wilbur's, because he got full on revived two days later just so his character could be traumatized some more.
the server is somehow simultaneously too ironclad in its story (not leaving room for others to jump in with ideas like a rp should, such as eret wanting to return in the pogtopia arc, or the egg plot being just ignored) and way too open ended (no clear rules or laws, lack of communication between people -- the "villain" team on the january doomsday showed up a whole 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled time without telling anyone, seemingly because "war isn't fair." those streams are an absolute disaster.) it's a little disappointing because some of the people involved are clearly talented; wilbur is a decent writer, although clearly more suited to a dungeons and dragons DM type of medium, many of the streamers are pretty good actors and not horrible writers / could be better with practice, and some of the newcomers, like ranboo, clearly have experience with roleplay character-driven storytelling and are very good when they're actually given the chance to do things. the whole thing is really disappointing, all in all.
sorry for rambling so much. tl;dr, you're absolutely right, it's disappointing as hell.
sORRY for not replying to this sooner- i read it earlier and completely forgot to respond
added a read more just in case this was a bit too long!
BUT UR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON ALL OF THIS- and speaking of "drawing parallels" with characters, i feel like its become a MAJOR crutch for the writers lately. its not only in universe with c!tubbo being compared to c!schlatt or c!quackity being compared to c!wilbur, it extends to myths too. i find the whole c!tommy = Theseus thing and whenever techno starts writing to be sorta a "get out of jail free card" yknow? they don't actually have to write their own plots or characters, just mimic that from myths and legends and i dont think it gels well with wilbur's somewhat original plot [i understand it was just minecraft hamilton, but it had some charming stuff in there yknow?]
and god yes you put my problems with c!techno into words beyond his voice acting, i don't want to imply that he's written his character to be invincible [or the olden term, a "gary sue"] but god it certainly comes off that way. i get so confused when i see people say "oh c!techno has been hurt over and over again!! why are things so terrible for him?" when he got "betrayed" once and that's it, its just so stupid and i cant understand the love for his character
and speaking of tommy, i totally agree. i dont mean to speculate on the kid's mental health since that's mega weirdchamp but combined with the constant angst his character is in plus his recent bad run ins with twitter, i hope he's doing okay. and on a side note, i hope his character gets to have the happy ending he deserves because man. Man.
BUT I HAD NO IDEA ABT THE EGG ARC KINDA BEING WRAPPED UP?? thats so disappointing oh my god. i'll read into it more since im curious about how it ended but god the fact that it sounds like it didnt have a bigger ending is just. wow. the annoying green man villain with no real motives and less of a stage presence gets all this hype and a bigger "ending" [yknow, him being sent to jail] than the eldritch creature that was growing throughout the smp?? wack.
i think one of the bigger problems of the dsmp story is just that. wilbur introduced some basic ideas and basic world stuff and instead of expanding on it gradually in a satisfying way, the new writers just went ham and didn't know what made the original so enjoyable, even tho it was, again, minecraft hamilton. i've seen some people claim that the new writers are better at precise intense moments but i heavily disagree with that, but thats probably because a lot of them involve dream yelling for his acting and i cant take that man seriously even in character.
but yeah, youre absolutely right on everything you've said here. they basically went "hey can i copy your homework?" with wilbur and somehow made things worse

RECAP OF DTG1:
On December 7, 2012, the Godmodder entered a small Minecraft server called GenericCraft. His mission was clear- take over the server and make everyone on it rage-quit. However, several Anti-Godmodder Descendants soon manifested and retaliated. Eventually, an Admin called citricsquid noticed the scuffle and charged and unleashed a powerful attack that should have killed him, but only damaged him. However, the AGs saw hope and doubled their efforts.
The Godmodder used Terrors to attack the Entities that the players summoned, and soon the battle was fought between two replenishing piles of entities. However, some players thought that physical strength might not be enough, hacking into the server and summoning a Glitch. The Glitch was quickly patched using a System Restore, though it was not the last time one would appear.
Soon after, a nuclear snowball was thrown at the Godmodder, seemingly destroying him. However, he adapted and became a hulking monster called the Nuclear Godmodder, showing that on occasion he could adapt to an attack thrown at him. Eventually, the nuclear energy was siphoned out of him, nullifying the encounter, but the server staff were starting to notice the destruction the battle was causing.
After a period of time where Terrors raged throughout the field, Death appeared. Initially, Death was neutral, but the Anti-Godmodders bribed him to their side to hold the line. Many powerful entities were summoned on both sides, resulting in a stalemate. One player decided to repeatedly summon a bunch of Hellkite Dragons buffed with invulnerability to many forms of damage, adding a new immunity each time they were successfully killed by a damage type.
Eventually the Konami Code was used, summoning a Mystery Gate. The Mystery Gate had to be opened by attacking it, but since it had one million HP, this was a tall order. After a whole lot of shenanigans including the Godmodder being turned into a squid and Steve? being summoned to lead an army of Terrors, the Godmodder decided to use a new strategy to take out AG entities- charging up beams meant specifically to kill certain entities. This quickly decimated the AG forces.
As the entity pile dwindled, the players began noticing the Gate again. However, they still couldn’t make much progress. Arceus was summoned, but the Godmodder stole its Type Plates that protected it from harm, killing it. However, Arceus was avenged by the Death Star IV and its Elite Droideka Squad, stationed in Minecraft space, to return at a later time.
One of the first AGs, Sylveon, was upset about Arceus’ death, promptly going back in time and causing a time paradox by convincing Arceus not to appear at the Battlefield. This summoned a terrifying monster that summoned entities from other forum games. However, the AGs managed to banish it by solving paradoxes. At roughly the same time, the Mystery Gate was opened, revealing itself as the Void Gate (a gate leading to the space between universes, the Void).
After a suitable amount of players teamed up, they assembled supplies and entered the Void. In the Void, the players solved puzzles and fought Dark versions of themselves. At the end of the sidequest, they spoke with the Secret of the Void, a gigantic cobalt dragon that was old as time itself. He informed them that he would help them in their fight against the Godmodder when they needed it most, and teleported them back to GenericCraft.
The Godmodder summoned the Terror Enderman and the Terror Wither, which were combatted by GladOS and an entity called the Shrine. However, during the battle, the Death Star IV was critically damaged and began to fall down towards GenericCraft. The Anti-Godmodder players thought fast and used the Death Star to kill the Terror Wither, detonating the Explodium in the planet’s core and creating a black hole.
At this point, the Godmodder was knocked down to his last 10 HP. TwinBuilder, the future GM of the second game, created the second Glitch in reality. In order to fix it, the AGs had to find the 64 Cube Bits of the server’s Hexahedron, all while the Godmodder had new, glitchy powers. However, the Hexahedron was finally completed, releasing a World-Healing Wave and knocking the Godmodder down to his last 5 HP!
To survive, the Godmodder summoned his massive house (read: redstone-powered super-fortress). The house had a total of over 1,000,000 HP, and the walls alone had 750,000 HP! The players used many powerful entities to attack the house, including Mega Man and the Subspace Gunship. Eventually, however, it was destroyed, and the Godmodder was getting desperate, summoning a huge Voodoo Monument.
The Godmodder submitted an application to become an admin on GenericCraft while the players were distracted. The application was approved because many of the players had tried to hack the server to get rid of the Godmodder, even though the Godmodder was the original hacker. Due to his method of becoming an admin, the players couldn’t submit abuse reports, so they had to protect civilians while they wrote and submitted theirs.
As the Godmodder lost his admin privileges, the players returned their attention to the Voodoo Monument. It went down in two rounds due to a momentary activation of Peaceful mode, and the Shrine’s final attack- a replication of the Death Star IV’s crashdown. As the monument was destroyed, the Godmodder was reduced to 1 HP!
The Godmodder, panicking, used both of his last-resort powers- A healing spell that would heal him to full in eleven turns… and an Anti-Chuck Norris Turret, converted into a Tank.
After a full round of the Anti-Chuck Norris Turret Tank no-selling every attack used against it, the Secret of the Void appeared, and fired a laser. The Turret Tank fired its own laser, but the Secret of the Void’s laser slowly overpowered it, while the Players protected the orbs powering the laser from an army of Terrors.
After a long struggle, the beam finally reached the Turret Tank, destroying it. With a karmically Chuck Norris-powered roundhouse kick, Crusher48 killed the Godmodder. The Godmodder respawned… but immediately ragequit the server.
The players celebrated their victory, but the Godmodder was stewing in his rage… and he swore revenge upon the Minecraft players that killed his Minecraft avatar. Revenge that would come into fruition less than 24 hours later…

Dream SMP is art.
Dream SMP is an innovative masterpiece of contemporary storytelling. Maybe I’m overstating my case. But I’m going to tell you some reasons why I love it—and why I think it might actually be *important* objectively as an artistic and cultural phenomenon.
What it is: Dream SMP is a Minecraft server hosted by Dream (mega-popular Minecraft YouTuber), and a couple dozen people stream or make videos of themselves playing on it regularly. SMP stands for “survival multiplayer.” It’s popular among Minecraft fans and some segments of YouTube and Twitch videogame culture, but it has not received mainstream attention.
Almost nobody seems to have explicitly appreciated what’s going on here--though I think many fans have an implicit and unspoken recognition of much of what I’m going to say. In short, I claim Dream SMP has legitimately interesting and important features as an artistic and cultural event.
A few onlookers such as Animagician and KianKSG have occasionally made video-analyses of a few elements of it, and Eret (a player) has at least briefly hinted at some of its possible artistic implications. But I think there’s a lot further to be said, a LOT which has not made it into any analyses thus far. And I’m only going to be scratching the surface of it here.
Dream SMP combines diverse genres and storytelling formats: improv comedy, improv drama, a role-playing style vaguely akin to LARPing or DnD, and a videogame-based medium vaguely akin to machinima. And probably a lot of other things I’m not cultured enough to know the names of. Among its striking features, it is taking place *publicly* and in *real-time*, and it is *international*-- including participants (and viewers) in both the US and UK, among other places.
Storyline: The Dream SMP storyline includes a sort of main plotline—a story of political intrigue and revolution—but it is open-ended enough to include many subplots. Viewers who have sufficient free time can theoretically keep track of as many or as few subplots as they wish. A sort of modest “lore” develops over time—manifested partially in the built structures or half-destroyed ruins that sometimes remain as relics of previous events (except, of course, when they’re destroyed thoroughly—which is sometimes a point of contention).
Most of the story is not pre-planned, except perhaps to a very vague extent, and most of it seems to emerge organically out of the interactions and visions of the players involved.
The characters and style: The players are engaging on a level which is often somewhere in between a fictional character and their usual online persona. (Their usual persona, in turn, is presumably somewhere in between a character and their “true” self—there has already been extensive discourse elsewhere about media personalities vs. “real” personalities.) Their mode of presentation often shifts around a lot in its degree of “seriousness” within a brief span of time, and there is a significant degree of fourth-wall-breaking. Some participants break the fourth wall more, some less. Some participants are heavily involved in the main storyline, while others mostly or entirely stay out of it and do their own thing.
All of the players have personalities which are easy to like. Even if you don’t like one player, there are probably many others you’ll like. Viewers can also sometimes have a mild degree of interaction with participants who are streaming (though it is worth noting the downsides of “parasocial relationships,” celebrity fandom, and associated phenomena of “stans” and now I guess “simps”—about which there is already a growing body of thoughtful discourse).
Some of the participants, such as JSchlatt (ironically the only major person who isn’t streaming), deliver stellar acting “performances”—I say “performances” but it often seems to flow from accentuating their own personalities. Many of the participants, like Wilbur Soot and TommyInnit, also have remarkable chemistry with each other.
The style is pretty much never “really” serious—there’s always a kind of winking-at-the-audience quality—but it still tends to have real dramatic weight, at least during some key events. It is easy to be emotionally invested. I’m not sure how to describe this.
The context: Dream SMP emerges from a rich intertextual backdrop. This is a high-sounding claim, but I’ll try to back it up.
It builds on elements first introduced in earlier SMPs. Or at least, I think there’s value in looking at it this way. Dream SMP can be seen as a development from short-term “bits” initially popularized by people like JSchlatt and ConnorEatsPants on SMP Live (started by CallMeCarson)—a kind of improv sketch comedy. These “bits” initially took the form of one-off gags, then recurrent gags, and eventually some of these expanded into longer-term “storylines” on SMP Earth (started by Wilbur Soot, a veteran of SMP Live), which made sense given the territorial-dispute format of gameplay on SMP Earth.
The SMP Earth technical format is not present in Dream SMP, which is basically a vanilla server, but Dream SMP retains the former’s emphasis on territorial disputes, alliances, treaties, and so on. I think these storytelling elements were *not* present in the earliest Dream SMP videos by Dream and his friends. Rather, these elements came into the picture when TommyInnit and then Wilbur Soot joined the server. Tommy and Wilbur took styles which they’d been developing on SMP Earth, and basically imported them onto Dream SMP and developed them further, soon bringing Dream and others into the act.
I may be reaching a bit, but I see this as a trilogy: SMP Live, SMP Earth, Dream SMP. (I should acknowledge some of the story or stylistic elements may also have more indirect roots in earlier Minecraft materials such as those created by The Yogscast, but I don’t know much about their work. I admit there could be a lot of precursors that I’m failing to give due credit here.)
Dream SMP also includes various passing references to external background information about its players (such as Schlatt’s appearances on other online shows such as “Love or Host”). A few real-life controversies-- such as the public issue of the 2020 US election, and the niche issue of the actual or imagined “beef” between Dream and Schlatt a few months ago-- lurk within the background, but in a sanitized and wholesome fashion that can make them less threatening. This seems to involve a kind of sublimation or redirection of anxieties into something manageable. I think there’s something powerful and beautiful going on here, but I have not seen it discussed in such terms, and maybe it’s just me.
The saga’s size and difficulty in keeping up: I do have mixed feelings about the sheer volume of the material. On the one hand, it is essential to the nature and value of Dream SMP that its core materials are produced via livestreams, quite long ones, by a lot of different people—and this produces the richness of its cast of characters, its lore, its style, and its internal variety.
But one downside is that the material is so extensive that it is difficult for a viewer to keep up-to-date, or to catch up after falling behind. I myself am behind right now. There are many multi-hour videos by many participants, and a lot of their runtime covers “downtime” in between major events in a given plotline (or is partially taken up by material unrelated to Dream SMP—e.g. chatting or playing other games).
Some participants, such as Wilbur Soot, have uploaded excellent abridged videos on YouTube that focus on the essential events—but since these videos are highly selective, there are inevitably a lot of interesting details and events which get left out. A lot of fans have also created compilation videos, and a few fans have created explanation videos. Many of these are helpful, but only a fraction of them cover key story elements (as opposed to subplots or secondary elements)— and it’s often hard to know what *order* to watch them in so as to get a well-organized or relatively thorough narrative experience. The fan wiki also contains some helpful information and shows promise, but at present it is quite regrettably incomplete in many respects.
It may be worthwhile for some fans to individually and collectively decide to make the Dream SMP story more accessible by (1) editing the fan wiki to be more thorough, and (2) creating new explanation videos, story-oriented compilation videos, and public playlists so that people can more easily watch many key events and/or minor events in chronological order.
Final thoughts: Honestly I’d like to see academic class syllabi, articles, and even books studying Dream SMP and related phenomena, in fields that cover issues such as fandom culture, social media, and genre-bending fiction/art. Again maybe I’m going too far here, but this seems as much worth studying as many other niche arts and subcultures that already have some academic presence.
Finally, Dream SMP is one of the few things that I'm currently passionate about and which I find consistently comforting, in our coronavirus era. Given how much free time a lot of people have, how lonely a lot of people are, how many people are in need of a comforting alternative world, and how many people currently want something other than mainstream fiction, Dream SMP may have arisen at the perfect time.

ok heres my thing heres my really long minecraft post...mega walls has a certain set of qualities that make it a very weird and unusual game
-1. like most other minecraft minigames its almost entirely played by kids (11-16). it’s almost exclusively played by boys
-2. it has a REALLY high skill floor just to be able to have fun playing it. you have to put in hours of investment just to not get pummeled every single game. this is mostly just technical skill, aiming to melee hit in clusterfucky minecraft combat or outrunning someone when you’re all the same speed over blocky terrain is mostly just processing visual information really fast like..hand eye coordination stuff i guess. yeah you learn the maps and strategies the people use and stuff but when it comes down to it you just have to be able to strafe and hit them more times than they hit you.
-3. the games last around 30-50 minutes (until the end when someone wins) and 10 minutes of that is just prep time (mining and crafting as they say?)... you’ve got stake in it even if the walls have just dropped (meaning the fighting is just starting). the deathmatch draws out for 20-30 minutes, with long periods of chasing and hiding before everyone even gets down to killing each other.
-4. the gameplay is honestly uh... kind of unreasonably intense thought the entire game. pvp in minecraft happens stupidly fast and even when you’re not fighting you’ve basically got to be running the whole time to not get beat up by some kid looking for an easy kill. this goes double in the deathmatch- even if you’re winning you still have to haul ass to run ahead of your thirsty teammates to get any final kills at all
-5. the teams are 25 people each- 100 people in a game. nobody works together at ALL. there might be some vague coordination if you’re in a party, but those max out at 4 people, so really for the most part it’s an every man for himself kinda deal. you have to take entire initiative to affect the outcome of the game while the wither is alive, and in the deathmatch it’s basically a benny hill style wild fucking goose chase for half an hour regardless of if you’re winning or losing. there’s no “hey guys pull back” you just have to follow the herd of bouncing steves in diamond clothing and try to kill people i guess. its kind of a weirdly primitive game in the sense that it has very few Rules you mostly just chase people and try to kill them and not get killed by them.
-6. because of the high skill floor for it even being fun the community/group of people who play it is very small. theres only 300 people or so playing at any given time (it’s 100 people per game). hypixel is a big server but only a tiny portion of the kids playing are actually willing to invest the time to play mw.
but uh the combination of all these things means theres several thousand- but no more- kids who are like..neurologically trained to participate in this really specific minecraft game. as in uh, the kids who started playing when they were 11 and are now 15 are better at mega walls then i will EVER be having Started to play at 15. but theyre almost like these weird minecraft super soldiers or something like all these kids who grew up playing a game thats so fast paced and consistently stressful and demanding that they’re completely wired for that stuff ... i dont know what point im getting at i just think its kind of a strange/interesting thing i wonder if those kids can put those skills to use somehow or if they’re just really good at minecraft pvp and thats it. HOLY shit this post is long
