thinking about that post from earlier where that kid's friend's mother flipped her shit over a pair of 6 year olds pretending to be orphans and thinking it meant her child "wanted" her to die.
I remember one thing about Mister Rogers' Neighborhood that was always made clear was that he is inviting the audience to imagine all the things that happen in The Neighborhood of Make-Believe. The language introducing that segment (literally "let's make-believe that--") and explaining it afterward was always very deliberate to make sure the little kids watching it understood that it's not real and that that entire portion of the show was built on the whole premise of using your imagination to work through difficult or confusing emotions.
Like keep in mind this show was made for kids around ages 3-5. Preschool. Kindergarten. That group, although older children might also have watched it. And yet far too many adults lack the basic ability to understand the difference between real and imaginary, and are terrified of their own imaginations and those of other people.
How the hell do people live like that, I wonder? It seems absolutely insufferable to me to go through life never thinking about anything other than what is in front of you.
