#MUSEUMEXPERIENCE
BA (Hons) Photography Years 1   Module: 4IMAG001W The Photographic Eye
PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION FORM
Name: Olga Zimowska e-journal: www.olgaphotonotes.tumblr.com password: free access
Project Title: “#MUSEUMEXPERIENCE”
I started my project by asking myself where I should locate my vision. I thought about places where people throughout the years have been keeping time in order to preserve human history for the next generations. That's why at that time I chose to take my pictures in the particular spots like museums, libraries, churches, and galleries. Firstly, I decided to go to the "Natural History Museum" and explore the enormous space of Hintze Hall. I took a tripod, set my camera on a long exposure and narrow aperture and for almost 4 hours I was photographing visitors on stoned stairs, going up and down. I was satisfied with the final result as I managed to capture people in notion looking like ghosts but I wanted to keep them in black and white and since our project needed to be in colors I figured out different approach towards my idea. While walking around one alley in the "Natural History Museum" I noticed a man who was standing behind a giant stuffed gorilla. I immediately reached for my camera, changed the ISO for a higher number and shot a series of vertical pictures with two beings who in terms of human evolution had a lot in common. After this funny observation I had discovered that even though I was amazed by the exhibits, I found myself even more fascinated by the way people perceive museum pieces and interact with their surrounding. I shared my thoughts with one of my friend from our course and she told me that I should definitely go to the "British Museum" and do some photos there. When I went there for the first time I was aesthetically delighted with the beautiful, bright light and intersecting shadows playing on the walls of the Great Court. Once I've started to take pictures of the visitors, I found out that after shooting approximately fifty photos the major amount of them where depicting people standing alone somewhere in a corner and staring at a phone screen instead of looking at the sculptures or paintings. Even when I captured them admiring a piece of art, they were usually doing that through their smartphones' interfaces. From that moment on, I began to question the contemporary relation between art and commerce, museum and digital technology. In order to lay the basic substantive foundations for my project, I went to our library and looked for other artists who locate their photos in museums or who emphasized in their work the main concept of museums in our fast-changing world. I felt inspired by the Tim Davis photobook called "The New Antiquity" where he documented "a very real faux-archaeological significance as he tracked down ruined fragments of a very ancient past".
