Evermore-Fashion: Celtic Mythology

Guinevere was the wife of King Arthur, the legendary ruler of Britain in Celtic mythology. She was a beautiful and noble queen, but her life took a tragic turn when she fell in love with Lancelot, one of Arthur's bravest and most loyal knights. Guinevere was also the daughter of King Leodegrance of Scotland. Arthur admired the king's lovely daughter and married her in spite of a warning from his adviser Merlin that Guinevere would be unfaithful to him. As a wedding gift, Leodegrance gave Arthur a round table that would play a central role in his court. After the marriage, Guinevere became acquainted with Lancelot, who performed various deeds to honour and rescue her. At first, Arthur took no notice of the growing attachment between the queen and Lancelot. Later, however, the king accused his wife of being unfaithful, and had to Lancelot. Several violent fights between the two followed, with groups of knights joining in on each side. Eventually, Guinevere returned to Arthur.

The Evermore Grimoire: Greek Mythology

Melinoë (Μηλινοη meaning ‘Dark-Minded’) was the goddess of ghosts, nightmares and funerary rites in Greek mythology. At night she wandered the earth with her train of ghosts, striking fear into the hearts of men. Her limbs were black on one side and white on the other, a manifestation of her dual chthonic and heavenly nature. Melinoë's presence was also believed to be the reason why dogs would bark at seemingly-nothing at night. According to one myth, she was known to be the daughter of Persephone (queen of the underworld) and Zeus (king of the gods) which seems quite simple but really is not. At the time, Zeus was incarcerated in the Underworld and had multiple facets. Persephone was impregnated by Zeus in disguise as one of Hades avatars, a Plouton. When Hades (king of the underworld) discovered the pregnancy, he tore Melinoë's body apart. Despite this violent beginning, she emerged as a powerful figure in Greek mythology, appearing in the Hymns of Orpheus and being revered as a bringer of nightmares and madness.

Evermore-Fashion: Celtic Mythology

The Lady of the Lake, was an enchantress also known as Viviane or Nimue, who appears in many of the tales of King Arthur in Celtic mythology. She is best remembered for her relationships with the knight Lancelot and the infamous magician Merlin. According to legend, the Lady of the Lake lived beneath a lake surrounding the mystical island of Avalon. She also raised Lancelot after his father died, and gave Arthur the magical sword Excalibur, which he treasured. When Arthur was near death, she saved him by taking him to Avalon to await a time when his people would once again need his leadership. The magician Merlin fell in love with the Lady of the Lake, however she refused to give him her love until he had taught her all his secrets. Eventually she used her powers to trap him either in the trunk of a tree or possibly beneath a stone. Despite Merlin having the gift of foresight and seeing his imprisonment coming, he was either powerless or unwilling to change his fate.

The Evermore Grimoire: Greek Mythology

Astraea (Ἀστραία, meaning 'star-maiden') was the virgin goddess of justice, innocence, purity and precision in greek mythology. She was also associated with Dike (goddess of justice) but not to be confused with Asteria (goddess of the stars). Astraea, the celestial virgin, was the last of the immortals to live with humans during the Golden Age, one of the old Greek religion's five deteriorating Ages of Man. According to Ovid, she abandoned the earth during the Iron Age. Fleeing from the new wickedness of humanity, she ascended to heaven to become the constellation Virgo. The nearby constellation Libra reflected her symbolic association with Dike, who in Latin culture as Justitia is said to preside over the constellation. In the Tarot, the 8th card, Justice, with a figure of Justitia, can be considered related to the figure of Astraea on historical iconographic grounds. According to legend, Astraea will one day come back to Earth, bringing with her the return of the utopian Golden Age of which she was the ambassador.

slavic mythology: sirin, alkonost and gamayun

The Alkonost is a legendary woman-headed bird in Slavic folklore. Alkonost is more likely an individual character, as was noted in some legends about this bird.

Sirin is a mythological creature of Rus' legends, with the head of a beautiful woman and the body of a bird (usually an owl), borrowed from the siren of the Greek mythology. According to myth, the Sirin lived in Iriy or around the Euphrates River.

Gamayun is a prophetic bird of Russian folklore. It is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge and lives on an island in the mythical east, close to paradise.
