Beat Takeshi stars as Hideyoshi in “Kubi” 首, a movie where he’s also involved in the scriptwriting, and also is the director!
To think that this showed up not long after I shared that old Toyota advertisement! However, unlike the more positive Hideyoshi image in the Toyota ad, the PR of this movie says that the plot follows the “Hideyoshi is the mastermind behind Honnouji” conspiracy. So we can expect a scheming, or even a somewhat sinister Hideyoshi in this production.
加瀬亮 Kase Ryou will play as Nobunaga, 西島秀俊 Nishijima Hidetoshi as Mitsuhide, 浅野忠信 Asano Tadanobu as Kuroda Kanbei, and 大森南朋 Ōmori Nao as Hideyoshi’s brother Hidenaga.
It’s always a little strange to me, to see a ridiculously old Hideyoshi when the actor cast as Nobunaga is much younger, but it’s a thing that’s very commonly done in Japanese live action productions and illustrated artwork.

2022 Horror Challenge: [45/?]
↳ "Huh? I hear something. Hear that? Tick tock... There. A clock? It's over. All over. But that's OK. I knew it'd happen." Helter Skelter (2012) dir. Mika Ninagawa
Plot: A J-idol undergoes a downfall once her extensive cosmetic surgery begins to fail.
Starring: Erika Sawajiri, Shinobu Terajima, Nao Ōmori, Kiko Mizuhara & Kaori Momoi
While it’s not necessarily what one thinks of as a horror movie in the traditional sense, it still counts and it has actually been on my watchlist for this challenge for a while. At least 3 years, to be exact. Figured I might as well finally do it. It is most certainly a visual spectacle, if nothing else. It’s just a beautiful movie to look at and take in the details. And Erika Sawajiri is equally stunning in the leading role. Apparently, her real life career kinda mirrored her character Lilico (just not so intently I’m sure) so that probably helped her a bit but she gives an all-in performance here so at least she did that before retiring. The rest of the cast is good. You definitely feel for Shinobu Terajima‘s char as Lilico’s assistant, who she treats appallingly. It’s light on plot in a way but it’s a slowburner as we watch Lilico’s gradual demise that sends her into madness. Man, oh man, that ending was sure something. Idk if narratively it was the strongest movie but visually?? It definitely made the watch worth it at least.

First Love (2019)

Blu-ray Review: Ichi the Killer
Tumblr media
Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (Audition, One Missed Call) has directed a staggering 101 films and counting, ranging from horror to drama to family fare, yet he remains most well known internationally for Ichi the Killer (titled Koroshiya 1 in its native Japanese). The 2001 film is, at its core, a crime film about feuding gangs, but its graphic depiction of violence and torture gives it a subversive edge that makes it memorable.
Never afraid to push the envelope, Miike proves early on that Ichi the Killer is no exception when the film's opening title appears in a puddle of semen. The controversial film has been censored or banned in several territories, but it's not entirely composed of extreme content. The film blends a variety of tones and genres, from action to horror to comedy, making for a unique viewing experience, particularly for Western audiences unfamiliar with Asian cinema.
Tumblr media
Ichi the Killer is written by Sakichi Satô (who would re-team with Miike on Gozu two years later), based on the manga by Hideo Yamamoto. It's about two disturbed individuals who represent opposite sides of the same coin: sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer Kakihara (Tadanobu Asano, Thor) and repressed, reluctant Ichi (Nao Ōmori), who blurs the lines between assassin, vigilante, and serial killer. Both derive pleasure from pain and admire one another's blood-drenched work, so the film builds steadily toward the big face-off between them.
The film was originally shot on 16mm, then transferred to digital for post production before being printed on 35mm for theatrical exhibition. Emperor Motion Pictures recently created a new 4K transfer from the 35mm inter-negative, which was then digitally restored and color graded for this release. The uncut, 128-minute version, presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Japanese audio and English subtitles, has been approved by Miike.
Tumblr media
The definitive remastered edition, released on Blu-ray by Well Go USA, still resembles an early digital film, but this is the best the movie can possibly look without going back to the original 16mm footage (which would require it to be entirely re-edited). Special features include an audio commentary with Miike and Yamamoto, a still gallery, and the trailer. Other extras from previous releases, unfortunately, have not been ported over.
Special makeup effects artist Yûichi Matsui (Ringu, The Grudge) has the ability to churn stomachs with his realistic work. On several occasions, however, Miike channels the absurdist sensibilities of Sam Raimi as he opts for over-the-top gore for humorous effect. OLM Digital's visual effects, on the other hand, look particularly dated in high-definition, but they are outweighed by the practical work.
Tumblr media
It's no surprise that Quentin Tarantino hired Matsui for Kill Bill: Volume 1, as the films have similar approaches to extreme bloodshed and violence. The esteemed filmmaker also cast Satô as Charlie Brown in both volumes of Kill Bill. Ichi's influence notably extends to Eli Roth’s Hostel as well. In addition to the sharing relentless torture sequences, Miike makes a brief cameo in the 2005 film.
Ichi the Killer is not quite as shocking in a post-"torture porn" world, but it still holds up rather well. The torture and gore sequences remain effective, but Miike uses them to make a statement rather than mere shock value. The film's real secret to success, however, is its unexpected, perverse sense of humor. Perhaps it can be chalked up to cultural differences, but the picture is fascinating in its peculiarity.
Ichi the Killer will be released on Blu-ray on March 20 via Well Go USA.
