⚜ Le Cabinet Noir | Episode III, N°1 | Tuileries palace, 14 Thermidor An 230
Emperor Napoleon V and his wife Charlotte are worried about the presence of Louis Simparte on French soil. He is a notorious anti-imperialist, a sort of black sheep of the family. It seems he has decided to move back to Francesim. He has published a book "Freedom" in which he recounts his family's mistreatment of him, culminating in his liberating divorce from the mother of his children and the imperial family. The emperor has decided not to censor the book, nor to prosecute the author immediately, which is causing controversy among the Simparte people.
Finally, Napoleon V couldn't resist revealing to his wife that he and his uncle had a plan for dealing with the "Louis Simparte" case, without going into details.
Beginning ▬ Next

There are some benefits that come with the new Napoleon Movie.
The one I notice the most (other than people asking me questions about the era and actually being interested in my answer) is now all the bookstores where i live are pulling out their books on the Napoleonic wars. Some of these books haven't seen the light of day in years.

Hmm, I watched Fall of the House Usher and one thing that I was thinking was that, I mean, comparatively, Leo doesn't really seem to bad? I mean he has the drugs, and he gives them to his siblings but both times he tries to convince them not to take them (or at least not to take too much). He cheats on his boyfriend which we can all agree is a massive douche move but is sort of just your normal asshollary. He genuinely seems to care about his siblings and is cut up when they die, even his business (which we don't see much about) is to do with video games, which seems much less harmful than what the others have going on.
But all of the worst stuff he does, killing the cat, and yes replacing it and lying about it, those are things prompted by Verna, and the hallucinations. Whereas all his siblings, their horrible things predate Verna, she didn't make Prospero plan a blackmail party in a chemical nightmare zone that he didn't check properly. She didn't make Camille go into the lab looking to screw her sister. Sure she stepped in with Froderick but she made a point that that was cause he was an absolute bellend. And without the actual cat murder, (which he hallucinated) Leo really doesn't seem that bad.
So I was thinking about it, and I started thinking that maybe that's the point? Both times when one of the siblings dies, they make a point that Leo is the one dealing with the press. He is meant to be first up for interviews after Prospero, he was the one chosen to announce Camille's death. All the Ushers are monsters. They say that again and again. But Leo's the personable one. He's the one that's meant to get you onside. The just one of the guys. The one who makes you think, yeah, they're billionaires, but he's just like us, he likes video games, he loves Marvel, he's got a boyfriend, and an apartment, he's the one that makes the Ushers seem human and relatable. Even when he is just as involved, and just as culpable in all the terrible things that the family does to keep themselves on top.

I found this neat portrait of Roustam Raza made by Hortense de Beauharnais! Circa 1800s
Roustam was Napoleon’s bodyguard and valet, and Hortense was Napoleon’s stepdaughter. Roustam was an Armenian Mameluke in Egypt, originally from Tbilisi. He became employed by Napoleon during the Egypt campaign in 1799, following him back to Europe, and remained by his side until Napoleon’s abdication in 1814. He lived the rest of his life in France.

Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi by Joseph Franque, 1812
Elisa Bonaparte was born on January 3, 1777. She was not as well-known as her sisters, beautiful Pauline and treasonous Caroline, but she was more capable than either of them. In fact, she was the Bonaparte sibling most like Napoleon, although she had the least influence over him. Napoleon himself said, “Elisa has the courage of an Amazon; and like me, she cannot bear to be ruled.” In 1805, he made her the Princess of Piombino and Lucca, where she formed an elaborate court, in imitation of the one in Paris. She took her duties seriously, ruling as a benevolent despot.
Elisa did such a good job that, in 1809, Napoleon made her Grand Duchess of Tuscany, a place she had long had her eye on. She moved her court to the Pitti Palace in Florence, which she refurbished in competition with Caroline’s court in Naples. Elisa's husband, Félix Baciocchi, commanded the local military division under his wife’s supervision. The two lived apart and took lovers.
When Napoleon’s empire began to crumble in 1814, Elisa broke away from her brother, hoping to save her own position. It was no use, as the Tuscans showed no sign of attachment to her and Elisa and Baciocchi had to flee. They tried, unsuccessfully, to make off with the silver and furniture from several of the palaces.
When Napoleon escaped from Elba and returned to France in March of 1815, the Austrians arrested Elisa and imprisoned her. She was released once Napoleon was safely on his way to exile on St. Helena. Elisa was given permission to live in Trieste, where she assumed the title of Countess of Compignano. She died of infection on August 7, 1820, at the age of 43.
When news of Elisa’s death reached Napoleon, he shut himself up alone for several hours. When he emerged, he said, “There is the first member of my family who has set out on the great journey; in a few months I shall go to join her.” He died nine months later, on May 5, 1821.
For more about Elisa, see "Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon's Capable Sister."
