It Takes A Community, But In The End, It Was Just One Man (A Memory For National Good Samaritan Day)
Sharing one of my favorite memories from the beginning. An early Davis Family Adventure.
Wadley, Georgia 1991 It was nowhere near as cold as the late autumns that my wife Connie and I were used to, growing up in Frederick, Maryland and East Chicago, respectively. Still, the early winter chill was enough to make our car ride from Tallahassee, Florida to Augusta, Georgia quite uncomfortable. We hadn’t owned our used ’84 Buick Regal that long, so the fact that the heating system had…

HOW HATERS ARE BORN (HHAB)
♡ chapter twenty-one — oh no, he’s hot! (💋)
Tumblr media
You can’t believe you agreed to this.
Oh wait, actually you can. Your mind keeps deciding what’s good for you, but was your mind even in the right place anyway? It’s really hard to come to terms with this right now while you’re sitting in Scaramouche’s passenger seat.
Was the Inazuma party that great for him to offer on his own to pick you up? If it weren’t for your absolute mastermind of a plan, you’d definitely say no. Hopefully?
But the both of you nestling in the straw bed of silence wasn’t on your bucket list for said plan. “How much longer?” You asked, breaking the awkward silence that had settled between you two like a thick fog.
“Thirty minutes.” Scaramouche’s dull tone was a true testament to the silence that encompassed them moments ago. It was kind of sad.
“And…how long was it when you started..?” You hesitantly drawled.
“Thirty-two minutes.”
“Oh my god,” You muttered, sinking into your seat. You should have never agreed for him to give you a ride, it’s like his brooding broodiness was plaguing your lungs.
But for some reason! You kept trying. “So! Uh…what made you want to pick me up anyway? We’ve got…some interesting history for you to be making this kind of effort right now!”
“I don’t do small talk.”
“Look, you gotta give me something. I’m dying here.” You pleaded with your eyes, probably the only sort of manipulation tactic you could try and use on him.
He let out a long, drawn out sigh. His violet eyes briefly flickering to meet yours before returning to the road. “It was either that, or bartend.”
“Wait, seriously? That’s it?” You raised an eyebrow, cheeks puffed from your fight to keep a laugh in. “You didn’t just want to be a good Samaritan, or what?”
“Do I look like I’d do something out of the goodness of my heart?” Scaramouche’s expression turned sour.
“I don’t know! You’re alright, I guess.” You caught yourself staring for a lot longer than expected, “Uhh, in the way that a clown at kids birthday parties has an extensive knife paraphernalia…kind of…alright?”
You cringed. This is a horrible conversation, even more so now that Scaramouche was willing to ignore what you said.
But the quieter it got, the better it was to hear a small laugh come out of his mouth. Even if you could barely hear the humor he got out of it. You looked at him, catching a glimpse of his mouth turned upwards.
There it was. The butterflies roaming in your stomach, vicariously reminding you of your own carefree mind. A faint glimmer of his amusement was enough to make you nervous, even when he barely made an effort to keep the small smile.
The crack in his demeanor returned to normal, once again unreadable. "Is that all you got?"
You felt a pang of disappointment at his lack of response, shoulder slumping. The awkward feeling was pretty much gone, but at what cost to your dignity? "Yeah, I guess so."
“You’re alright too, (Y/N).”
“Huh? I am..?" Oh no, he’s hot!
“Yeah. It’s unfortunate.”

[T]he Jericho road is a dangerous road. I remember when Mrs. King and I were first in Jerusalem. We rented a car and drove from Jerusalem down to Jericho. And as soon as we got on that road, I said to my wife, "I can see why Jesus used this as the setting for his parable." It's a winding, meandering road. It's really conducive for ambushing. You start out in Jerusalem, which is about 1200 miles—or rather 1200 feet above sea level. And by the time you get down to Jericho, fifteen or twenty minutes later, you're about 2200 feet below sea level. That's a dangerous road. In the days of Jesus it came to be known as the "Bloody Pass." And you know, it's possible that the priest and the Levite looked over that man on the ground and wondered if the robbers were still around. Or it's possible that they felt that the man on the ground was merely faking. And he was acting like he had been robbed and hurt, in order to seize them over there, lure them there for quick and easy seizure. And so the first question that the priest asked—the first question that the Levite asked was, "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But then the Good Samaritan came by. And he reversed the question: "If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?" That's the question before you tonight. Not, "If I stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to my job. Not, "If I stop to help the sanitation workers what will happen to all of the hours that I usually spend in my office every day and every week as a pastor?" The question is not, "If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?" The question is, "If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?" That's the question. Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation. And I want to thank God, once more, for allowing me to be here with you.
—Martin Luther King Jr, "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech delivered at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters), Memphis, Tennessee, Apr 3, 1968

Meghan: I’m airing my struggle with suicidal thoughts to help others
Duke and Duchess of Sussex appear on US television to publicise project to tackle child safety online
Caroline Davies
Sun 4 Aug 2024 18.41 CEST
The Duchess of Sussex has spoken about her struggles with mental health and suicidal thoughts as she and her husband launched an initiative to tackle child safety online.
Meghan, who revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey three years ago that she thought of taking her own life while a working royal, said she hoped by speaking out she could help others.
“When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey – certainly part of mine – is being able to be really open about it,” she said on Sunday in a joint interview with Prince Harry on the US network CBS.
“And you know, I haven’t really scraped the surface on my experience. But I do think that I would never want someone else to feel that way. And I would never want someone else to be making those sort of plans. And I would never want someone else to not be believed.
“So, if me voicing what I have overcome will save someone, or encourage someone in their life to really genuinely check in on them and not assume that the appearance is good, so everything’s OK, then that’s worth it. I’ll take a hit for that.”
The duchess, 43, was speaking as the couple, parents to Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, launched the Parents’ Network, in association with their Archewell Foundation, to provide an online community and resources to help combat social media harm. The No Child Lost to Social Media campaign was set up after a two-year pilot programme with families whose children had felt the harmful effects of social media.
Prince Harry said the grief these families had suffered could happen to anyone. “We always talk about in the olden days if your kids were under your roof, you knew what they were up to. At least they were safe, right? And now, they could be in the next-door room on a tablet or on a phone and can be going down these rabbit holes. And before you know it, within 24 hours, they could be taking their life.”
In the couple’s 2021 interview with Winfrey, Meghan told the chatshow host: “Look, I was really ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially, because I know how much loss he suffered. But I knew that if I didn’t say it, that I would do it … and I just didn’t want to be alive any more. That was a clear, real, frightening and constant thought.”
Speaking of the Parents’ Network, she told CBS on Sunday: “I think you have to start somewhere, to look at it through the lens of, ‘What if it was my daughter? What if it was my son? My son, or my daughter who comes home, who are joyful, who I love, and one day, right under my roof, our entire lives change because of something that was completely out of our control?’” She said that, for a parent, the only way to look at the problem was to try to find a solution.
In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans can be contacted on freephone 116 123, or email [email protected] or [email protected]. In the US, you can call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on 988, chat on 988lifeline.org, or text HOME to 741741 to connect with a crisis counselor. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is 13 11 14. Other international helplines can be found at befrienders.org

The Good Samaritan
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." — Luke 10:25-37 | Revised Standard Version (RSV) Revised Standard Version of the Bible, copyright © 1946, 1952, and 1971 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. First Reading Jonah 1:1-2:1,11 Jonah flees from his call.
The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and inform them that their wickedness has become known to me.’ Jonah decided to run away from the Lord, and to go to Tarshish. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and went aboard, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from the Lord. But the Lord unleashed a violent wind on the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the ship threatened to break up. The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw the cargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below and lain down in the hold and fallen fast asleep. The boatswain came upon him and said, ‘What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps he will spare us a thought, and not leave us to die.’ Then they said to each other, ‘Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is responsible for bringing this evil on us.’ So they cast lots, and the lot fell to Jonah. Then they said to him, ‘Tell us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country? What is your nationality?’ He replied, ‘I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.’ The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, ‘What have you done?’ They knew that he was trying to escape from the Lord, because he had told them so. They then said, ‘What are we to do with you, to make the sea grow calm for us?’ For the sea was growing rougher and rougher. He replied, ‘Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it will grow calm for you. For I can see it is my fault this violent storm has happened to you.’ The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea grew still rougher for them. They then called on the Lord and said, ‘O Lord, do not let us perish for taking this man’s life; do not hold us guilty of innocent blood; for you, the Lord, have acted as you have thought right.’ And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea grew calm again. At this the men were seized with dread of the Lord; they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.
The Lord had arranged that a great fish should be there to swallow Jonah; and Jonah remained in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights. The Lord spoke to the fish, which then vomited Jonah on to the shore.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Jonah 2:3-5,8
R/ You lifted my life from the pit, O Lord.
Out of my distress I cried to the Lord and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried, and you have heard my voice.
R/ You lifted my life from the pit, O Lord.
You cast me into the abyss, into the heart of the sea, and the flood surrounded me. All your waves, your billows, washed over me.
R/ You lifted my life from the pit, O Lord.
And I said: I am cast out from your sight. How shall I ever look again on your holy Temple?
R/ You lifted my life from the pit, O Lord.
While my soul was fainting within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came before you into your holy Temple.
R/ You lifted my life from the pit, O Lord.
Gospel Acclamation cf. John 6:63,68
Alleluia, alleluia! Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life; you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia!
Or: John 13:34
Alleluia, alleluia! I give you a new commandment: love one another just as I have loved you, says the Lord. Alleluia!
Gospel Luke 10:25-37 The good Samaritan.
There was a lawyer who, to disconcert Jesus, stood up and said to him, ‘Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? What do you read there?’ He replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.’ ‘You have answered right,’ said Jesus ‘do this and life is yours.’
But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus replied, ‘A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on to his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,” he said “and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.” Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands‘ hands?’ ‘The one who took pity on him’ he replied. Jesus said to him, ‘Go, and do the same yourself.’

First Reading 2 Corinthians 6:4-10 How we prove that we are God's servants.
We prove we are servants of God by great fortitude in times of suffering: in times of hardship and distress; when we are flogged, or sent to prison, or mobbed; labouring, sleepless, starving. We prove we are God’s servants by our purity, knowledge, patience and kindness; by a spirit of holiness, by a love free from affectation; by the word of truth and by the power of God; by being armed with the weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left, prepared for honour or disgrace, for blame or praise; taken for impostors while we are genuine; obscure yet famous; said to be dying and here are we alive; rumoured to be executed before we are sentenced; thought most miserable and yet we are always rejoicing; taken for paupers though we make others rich, for people having nothing though we have everything.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 125(126):1-6
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels the Lord worked for them!’ What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage as streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
They go out, they go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing: they come back, they come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
Gospel Acclamation John 8:12
Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; anyone who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 5:13-16 Your light must shine in the sight of men.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

First Reading 2 Corinthians 4:1-2,5-7 God has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of his glory.
Since we have by an act of mercy been entrusted with this work of administration, there is no weakening on our part. On the contrary, we will have none of the reticence of those who are ashamed, no deceitfulness or watering down the word of God; but the way we commend ourselves to every human being with a conscience is by stating the truth openly in the sight of God. For it is not ourselves that we are preaching, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. It is the same God that said, ‘Let there be light shining out of darkness’, who has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, the glory on the face of Christ.
We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 95(96):1-3,7-8,10
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Proclaim his help day by day, tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and power; give the Lord the glory of his name.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Proclaim to the nations: ‘God is king.’ The world he made firm in its place; he will judge the peoples in fairness.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Gospel Acclamation Mark 1:17
Alleluia, alleluia! Follow me, says the Lord, and I will make you into fishers of men. Alleluia!
Gospel Luke 5:1-11 They left everything and followed him.
Jesus was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ ‘Master,’ Simon replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point.
When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.’ Then, bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed him.

(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Monday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 The Spirit reaches even the depths of God.
The Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God: he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything, and his own value is not to be judged by other men. As scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 144(145):8-14
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God, to make known to men your mighty deeds and the glorious splendour of your reign.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
Yours is an everlasting kingdom; your rule lasts from age to age. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
Gospel Acclamation Hebrews 4:12
Alleluia, alleluia! The word of God is alive and active: it can judge secret emotions and thoughts. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 13:47-52 The fishermen collect the good fish and throw away those that are no use.
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’

Good Samaritan Day & International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction Day & National Day for Failure & International Suit Up Day
Person A is someone who’s powers replenish by failing, so they are able to be seen as clumsy and useless in their real life and once they’d built up enough failures to pull off a great feat, dons their hero costume, and because of the stark difference between their civilian self and their effortless grace of their hero self, no one is suspicious. But they can’t consistently be their hero self due to the nature of their powers, and is often more of an impressive backup hero who the main heroes call in for help every so often. Person B is a backup villain because their powers have their own restriction, but based around acts of service and kindness. Person B spends their daily civilian life helping out everyone they meet and volunteering and doing charity work, but can only manage to be so nice and patient and sweet because once enough displays of kindness have been built up, they have to release an act of devastation, and decided they would rather have people adore their civilian self and think well of them, than walk the line between good person and bad person in their daily life to avoid random outbursts of evil. Person B often spends their time taking care of Person A’s various clumsiness induced injuries and problems their uselessness causes and so the two end up being fairly close in their civilian lives and have never met in their hero and villain forms since they’re so far down the backup call list. Until they finally do.

Soup Cookie Sympathy: NYC Subway Strangler Daniel Penny Raised Over $2 Million For Legal Defense For Killing Jordan Neely -
Soup Cookie Sympathy: NYC Subway Strangler Daniel Penny Raised Over $2 Million For Legal Defense For Killing Jordan Neely

Last week, BOSSIP reported on the death of a Black man named Jordan Neely at the hands of a white man named Daniel Penny aboard an NYC subway train. Neely was suffering a severe mental health crisis and Penny took it upon himself to enact vigilante violence against him in the name of “heroism.” Despite being released by the NYPD following some brief questioning, Penny was eventually charged with second-degree manslaughter. Although we shouldn’t be totally surprised, the latest update of this story is nonetheless infuriating.

We cannot confirm this, but we’d be willing to bet good inflated American currency that those who donated to this sick show of public sympathy own at least ONE red hat…
The alleged law firm of Raiser & Kenniff, P.C. initiated the fundraiser on a platform called GiveSendGo at 1o a.m. Sunday morning. Once word got out, people immediately started reaching into their proverbial pockets to donate. Raiser & Kenniff (which sounds fake as HELL but we digress…)claim that any money that is left over after expenses are paid will be donated to a mental health program in NYC.
Individuals who donated to Penny’s fundraising effort left comments backing Penny’s self defense argument: “Thank you for standing up for innocent people that day,” one person wrote.
It’s worth mentioning that Trump boot-licker, Disney damager, Presidential-hopeful, and Florida governor Ron DeSantis also shared the fundraising effort on his social media accounts as hell. Similarly, the National Police Association sent out a tweet soliciting donations for the “good Samaritan.”
Daniel Penny and those who support him can go straight to hell.

Cade Bentley (he/him). District Six. Bartender. 26. Brenton Thwaites.
Cade Bentley used to know power, luxury, privilege. He was fluent in the language of old money and a master navigator of high-powered politics. As a Bentley he was born into it, a fluid gold expected to someday learn from the gems and precious metals of people he flowed between to form himself into something befit for a jewel on the Six-Capitol crown.
Cade, however, never had interest in becoming anything. He rather preferred the liminal spaces between the glorified, where he could fill in the gaps and still get into all the right parties, know the right people, find the right drugs to keep the fun going.
It didn’t come from nowhere, he knew that– but his father’s company, Bentley Industries, was the backbone of Six’s industry, a critical component of the Capitol’s ability to keep its nation the right amount of connected. He supposed the fountain of cash was not bottomless, hypothetically, but so long as the Capitol was, so Bentley Industries would be. In his early twenties, though, the pressure started to mount on him to figure out a direction for his life, for the molten riches within him to begin to cool into his own glorious form. The issue was, Cade was happy like this. Parties, women, men, drugs, cash to blow. Who wouldn’t be? Reluctantly, he took up a role as a stylist in the Games. He had enough connections to bullshit his way through it, and once the tributes were in the Games, he’d be in the clear to do whatever and access Games-exclusive fun. It wasn’t like Six ever won. For a little while, it seemed to work. Paying actual starving artist designers under the table to do his work who needed the cash, attending the occasional meeting, and like magic, he’s off the hook and can do his own thing. Then his father died. Had the fucking audacity to have a heart attack, the bastard, and to leave the entirety of Bentley Industries in Cade’s hands, his only heir, naming him CEO of a national powerhouse company at the ripe old age of 26. It was the first time in Cade’s life he ever felt stress like this. Within days he was drowning in the paperwork, and drowning in his complicated grief. Within months, the company started to take a sharp downturn, and he asked for help in a fellow socialite he thought he could trust to go in with it on him, fairly, fifty-fifty. Business is cutthroat. Selene Honeybell swindled him out of any controlling shares, money, inheritance, control, power, and while his name still, technically, was in association with Bentley Industries, Selene Honeybell was the new puppetmaster. Cade Bentley had nothing. He was homeless, districtless, skilless. He was dirty rainwater running through the gutters of the Capitol streets, formless and helpless to the direction he was being swept. It seemed he was deposited at Everett’s doorstep. Everett showed him a kindness that he barely understood. It didn’t come with the usual language of kindness, not the motherly type or the good samaritan type. The type that offered up his couch, occasional packets of noodles, and more often than once finding themselves in each other’s beds– though to what end, neither of them seemed to want to think about or know. It was simpler that way.
At first, he took the space, finally, to breathe. Process. Grieve. It became evident very quickly, however, that he couldn’t expect Everett’s hospitality to last long. He had little money to pay in rent or groceries (though he tried to pitch in), he had no purpose anymore to keep him occupied, and when they were around each other this often, there was the same weird undercurrent that had remained in stasis for a couple of years now as to what they meant to one another. They looked out for each other, but they fought and thought so differently, but they shared Everett’s bed more than Cade went to the couch.
He had to leave. He’d planned it, but told no one. He waited until Everett’s breathing had dropped off into deep sleep one night, standing and carefully gathering his few items from around the apartment that he thought wouldn’t wake him. It didn’t even take twenty minutes for Cade to then be on the next train to Six.
Six he understood a little better. He knew who to talk to to find jobs. At first they were small ones, simple ones though not at all lacking in their difficulty. Cade didn’t excel at these– he jumped between them a lot. What it did do, though, was introduce him to a host of people at Six’s underbelly, and the types of work where the real money would come. What Cade lacked in intelligence, he made up for in looks and a general lack of self-preservation, favored traits in the kind of work the underground powerful needed done. It went on like this for a year. At first, it was easy cash, Cade could slip in and out of contact. The grip they had on him, though, wound around him quietly, without him noticing. The jobs got a little more complex, the asks bigger– and the pay higher. It was only once he started questioning if he could really do some of the tasks given to him that he realized how tangled in Six’s criminal networks he was now, that to even test the bindings now cinched tight around him could get him killed.
He was stuck. The 132nd Games came and passed, shortly after he was taken into an office and given a talk as though he was receiving a promotion. Or… maybe he was? He wasn’t sure. He had a spot as the bartender on the inside of the Tower for the coming Games, the perfect spot to collect intel and run their drug hustle– among other things they’d ask of Cade. He was perfect for the job, celebrity enough to be right at home in the Capitol, he knew the ropes of the Tower from his time as a stylist there, but low profile enough he’d be perceived as harmless. He could get anything– or anyone– in or out of that Tower. His role starts with a bang at the 132nd Victor’s Ball. He both dreads being back, and is relieved to get some distance from the organized crime life in Six. Besides, bartenders make good tips and sometimes get to bring pretty people home. It could be worse, as he was often reminded these days. Cade is ambivalent about the Games these days. He used to find them fun and intriguing, and sometimes he still enjoys the atmosphere of it all in the Capitol, but he’s gone lukewarm on them since being up close with the tributes– and his unnamed closeness with Everett. He’s quite charismatic, boisterous, and outgoing, but he can be reckless, shortsighted, and cowardly.

Bridges/CrossRoads Sunday School 4.16.2023
Today we start a three-part study on Acts. The story of how the church started. Acts urges us to dream bigger and expect more.
"You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (1:8). This is, in effect, an outline of the book of Acts. It tells of the founding of the church, the spread of the gospel, the beginnings of congregations, and evangelistic efforts in the apostolic pattern.
Today we’re going to consider “insiders” versus the “outsiders” and whom God welcomes into His family.
Why do we spend so much time thinking about who’s in and who’s out?
Who were the original insiders in the church?
Who would we consider insiders? Who would we consider outsiders?
Put away cautious rationality for a little while and wonder about what kinds of things are possible for people of faith and the communities in which we live. Believers in Acts are routinely surprised by the Holy Spirit or required to figure out (or catch up with) what the Spirit is doing.
The best examples of people realizing those expansion moments in Acts are stories of dramatic and unexpected conversions, when people who are truly unusual (in the best sense of that word) hear the good news and enter into fellowship with other followers of Jesus Christ.
Everyone involved in these stories—not just the “converts”—experiences change. That’s what God does, according to how Acts perceives life in the post-Easter world. God’s activity is described as people coming to grasp new understandings of how extensive God’s salvation is.
Acts 8:4-8, 14-17 The Apostles and the Samaritan converts
Samaritans were among the last people that many Judean and Galilean Jews would have wanted to socialize with, let alone share good news with. There was a history of the groups committing violence, vandalism, and sacrilege against one another. That deep legacy of enmity appears not to be a stumbling block for Philip, however. He just goes to Samaria, delivers people from illness and demonic power, and tells everyone that Jesus is the Christ. As a result, the Samaritans go all in.
What people groups today are sometimes treated as modern-day “Samaritans?”
How does “othering” harm both the target group and the one’s targeting such groups?
The Samaritans’ receptivity to the good news and the willingness of God to dwell within Samaritan people would have emphatically reconfigured many Jews’ notions of who this new, emerging “church” was for in the first place. That’s why it’s important for apostles from Jerusalem to come to Samaria, so they can experience in person the new thing that God is doing.
If Samaritans are really “in,” that changes things, such as the way believers in Jerusalem talk about certain people, whom they will share holidays with, whom their children will marry, and how they will pray and worship as a gathered church.
Acts 8:26-40 Philip and the Ethiopian court official
What do you think the Ethiopian Court Official’s pronouns were?
No matter the reason for the Ethiopian court official being a eunuch, it would have opened them up to mockery and contempt from most ancient people’s perspectives. According to the dominant view in Greco-Roman culture, they are no longer a man.
All in all, according to ancient norms the court official does not fit neatly into the boxes people use to sort one another. They enjoy some forms of power and respect but lacks others. They are neither male nor female.
What types of labels do we slap on people?
Why are we so quick to sort people under these types of labels?
As the passage ends, a conversion occurs. Readers should take from that event a clear and gripping statement that the good news is for everyone; there are no barriers nor advantages arising from national identity, sexual identity, social standing, or public honor.
What types of barriers have we erected in the church against some people groups?
How important is this passage for people who have been denied power, dignity, and a place at the table in Christian history?
How does this story make the Ethiopian court official a powerful representative of numerous groups that have been labeled outsiders?
 Acts 9:1-20 Saul and Ananias
Acts introduces Saul as a quintessential villain. Jesus decides who people really are; their reputations do not.
Why is Ananias necessary? He’s necessary because Saul is not only being brought out of something (his old ways and understandings). He’s also being brought into something (a new identity woven into the communal existence of Jesus’ church). Saul’s transformation needs to be acknowledged by the people of God as an act of God. If an enemy like Saul can be turned around, potentially anyone can. Starting with Ananias, the church needs to know that.
Who might you consider an “enemy” of the church?
How are we called to relate to those we might deem “enemies?”
