Renault SA Talks About The Challenges Faced Due To The EV Shift
Renault SA Managing Director,  Tshifularo about his career path, products and Renault SA’s prospects after the 2035 European fossil fuel ban on cars
Shumani Tshifularo hails from a village outside Thohoyandou, Limpopo. He is a chartered accountant and his work experience includes CFO at a local airline, a stint in the heavy machinery leasing sector and posts in several divisions at the Motus Group.
Tumblr media
Working his way up
In 2007, Tshifularo was Africa operations MD of Eqstra Fleet Management, and in 2009 he became CFO of Toyota Forklifts — another division — and then MD.
He left the group briefly in 2019 and rejoined Kia SA as its commercial director. The Korean car brand along with Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Renault, form part of the Motus vehicle import division that represents 23 passenger and commercial original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in SA.
His stint at Kia lasted a year before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Thereafter, he joined Renault SA as commercial director, leading the project to convert and bring to market the Renault Triber Express panel van, among other projects.
In March 2022, he succeeded former Renault SA MD Jaco Oosthuizen who now leads the Motus Group in Australia.
Tumblr media
Products
Growing the Renault brand forms a large part of his immediate responsibilities. The company ranks in the top ten best-sellers nationally. The focus is on strengthening model numbers, starting with the new Renault Captur. It’s an important and popular model with SA customers. The Austral SUV, the perfect replacement for the Kadjar, is not confirmed.
Another model in contention is the Renault Oroch, a half-tonne bakkie based on the Renault Duster. Market research continues on this cool-looking yet perplexing bakkie, which is more a lifestyle loader than a workhorse.
“We must ensure that we get the price and positioning correct before deciding if the Oroch gets the green light,” emphasised the MD.
Renault Stellenbosch has covered this topic a number of times and will most likely continue to provide the latest on the Oroch bakkie.
A batch of 55 Megane RS Ultime — the last model to wear the now retired Renault Sport logo — is now available for order, and though production of right-hand drive Alpines has commenced, we could not draw the MD into this topic. Besides, we sought a more interesting local angle. This raises excitement for local Renault dealers like the popular Stellenbosch branch.
Going electric
Efforts to launch the Renault Arkana hybrid in 2024 are at an advanced stage, and this will mark Renault’s first foray into electrified mobility in this market. Dacia is the Romanian-born sister brand of Renault, and it markets a technical twin of the popular Renault Kwid, now with a fully electric version.
Is the brand not picking up on the opportunity to sell affordable electric cars in SA?
Tshifularo says his team is looking at various solutions, but there are challenges, especially load-shedding. He recently commuted in Paris in the all-electric Renault Zoe city car and says there were some issues, mostly non-functioning street-charging stations. So, it seems some European grids also are not coping with demand.
Another challenge with the electric Kwid is pricing. Prices start at €17,000 (R333,000). This is about R100,000 more expensive than even the priciest Kwid in this market. It would be unattainable and pointless to Kwid’s customer base, added the MD.
2035 fossil fuel ban
With Europe set on banning the manufacture of fossil fuel cars by 2035, Tshifularo outlines what he foresees will be the saving grace for markets behind the electric curve. He says the majority of Renaults sold in SA are built and sourced from India, and he anticipates this arrangement will continue beyond 2035.
He says there is talk of some of the Indian assembly plants already planning affordable new energy vehicles by then. Based on these outcomes, perhaps there will be something small, fully electric and suitable for our market conditions.

Кому Duster с электромотором? Третье поколение популярного кроссовера получит гибридную силовую установку E-Tech
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

2022 Renault Kiger Review
If you are someone looking for your first car or planning to graduate from your generic hatchback to a sub-compact SUV, then you are quite literally spoiled for choice. Today, we have both indigenous and global brands offering exciting options in this space and among them is Renault’s offering the Kiger SUV, which received a number of updates for 2022. We recently drove a 2022 model of the sub-compact SUV and here are our impressions
Exterior & Upgrades:
The Renault Kiger for sale was a good-looking product from the beginning when it launched back in February 2021, with sharp creases and proportionate dimensions. Renault reports that it has produced over 50,000 Kiger compact SUVs since its launch in 2021.
For the 2022 update, Renault added some tidbits to amp it up. Like the turbo decal stretching across the door panels, a red Renault badge in the centre of the 16-inch machined alloy wheels and an all-new stealth black body colour. The Kiger now also gets a skid plate on the front and a chrome strip on the tailgate for 2022, while the door handles and ORVMs get a blacked-out treatment that gives good contrast.
On the inside, not much has changed visually but there are noteworthy upgrades. The Kiger models on sale now have a wireless charger as standard, across all variants. The grey plastic insert that ran through the middle of the dash now features a sporty red theme. The blacked-out fabric seats feature red stitching as well for 2022 and the quilted texture also looks and feels nice. But the major upgrade in 2022 for the Kiger is the addition of Cruise Control for comfortable highway rides.
Engine & Transmission options:
The 3-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine is offered in three different states of tune out of which two are turbocharged and the top of the line even offers a CVT gearbox, and for the budget-conscious, there is also an AMT transmission on offer. Overall, the Kiger offers 20 variants spread between the Rs 6 to 10.6 lakh band that are intended to suit a wide spectrum of buyers.
Amidst the fierce competition, the Kiger is relying on its modern styling and European design characteristics to woo buyers. But what about its driving and handling characteristics? Do they live up to the standards that we have come to expect from a Renault SUV since the Duster?
Performance & handling:
The 1.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 73 kW of power and 152 Nm of torque with manual transmission and 160 Nm of torque with the X-Tronic CVT. Whereas, the 1 litre Energy engine produces 53 KW of power and 96 Nm of torque. The turbocharged version that we drove, felt peppy and did not feel out of breath under any circumstance. However, you can notice the typical rubber band effect of the CVT transmission. But it is nothing that one cannot get used to. Renault also claims that the Kiger offers fuel efficiency of 20.5 km to the litre, however, during our test ride, we were able to churn out a little over 18 km/l as per the onboard calculator.
The Kiger offers three driving modes: eco, normal and sport. While the eco and normal modes are distinct in their own right it is the sport mode where the Kiger really comes alive and performs noticeably well. Even the CVT's response becomes much quicker than it does in normal or eco mode. We also took the Kiger over some rough rural patches and the compact SUV easily tackled bad roads and narrow streets thanks to its modest dimensions and the McPherson strut suspension set-up on the front. However, when going over potholes the suspension does get quite vocal, to the point where passengers could get uncomfortable. Overall, for a car that weighs under 1,500 kilograms, the Kiger is both capable and fun to drive and a lot of the fun factor can be attributed to its turbocharged engine.
Interior:
We would like to make a special mention of the all-black interior theme which was a personal favourite. As it gives the cabin a sporty appeal and will be easy to maintain in the long run. The digital instrument cluster hosts a lot of information and even changes its configuration depending on the driving mode that has been selected. The central 8-inch infotainment touchscreen has a simple UI and is fairly easy to operate. It is not going to wow you but it will not even disappoint. The audio quality from the 8-speaker system is sufficient and the wireless charger works even with your phone cover on. At the rear, the Kiger offers 405 litres of boot space that easily accommodates our production equipment and several bags. In simple terms, two large bags or three medium-sized bags would fit flush inside the boot.
However no car is perfect and the Kiger is no exception, while technically it is a five-seater, during long drives, only 4 adults will feel comfortable sitting at the back. Those who appreciate a good fit and finish might end up feeling underwhelmed as there is a noticeable lack of finish in some areas of the interior packaging.

Renault Plans to Double Component Export Revenue from India by Next Year
French carmaker Renault is planning to double revenues from automobile component exports from India to various global operations by next year, aiding its suppliers in the country to stay afloat at a time when the domestic industry is going through a prolonged slowdown. The company garnered a total revenue of around 190 million euros in 2018 from component exports from India to its various global operations. The automaker, known for its Duster and Kwid models, is now also looking at bolstering its presence in India with plans to launch three new models, including an electric vehicle, by 2022 in line with its mid-term plan to double its market share in the country by that year.
Renault India has a market share closed to 4 per cent in the domestic passenger vehicle segment. Besides, it also aims to double sales and services network in the country in order to support new products and also its existing customers. “We export a lot of parts, close to 198 million euro worth of parts are getting exported globally per annum and this is going to double by the first half of the next year,” Renault India Operations Country Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Venkatram Mamillapalle told PTI in an interview. The exports are helping in keeping the supplier community of Renault in India intact, he added.
“They (suppliers) might see a lot of decline in volumes (domestic market) but they are not impacted as exports have picked up more and thanks to the devaluation of the rupee, it means better revenues as you get paid in euros,” Mamillapalle said. The company exports components such as engine parts, plastic and body parts to countries such as Russia, Brazil, Romania, Colombia, Argentina and Morocco. When asked about vehicle exports, Mamillapalle said the company is exporting about 10,000 units of Kwid to South Africa per annum. “For Triber, we are working for right-hand markets from Africa to the Asia Pacific. Currently, the engineering department is working on meeting regulations and homologations…hope they do it faster…probably beginning of next year, we will start exporting the model,” Mamillapalle said.
Elaborating on plans regarding the domestic market, he said that with three new products lined up for launch by 2022, the company is getting into an “attack mode” to garner market share. Renault has already introduced upgrades of Duster and Kwid and launched an all-new model Triber recently as it eyes volumes in the country. “We are going to play in the mass market segments. We are not going to get into segments with low volumes,” Mamillapalle said. He added that the company plans to have around 700 strong sales network across the country by 2022. The company currently has around 320 dealerships in India.

Renault Duster Range Updates
In South Africa, the Duster boasts over 23 000 sold since its initial launch in 2013.Next-level styling
Tumblr media
Next-level styling
Visually extremely muscular, the design tone is set by its aggressive lines, expressive front and wider rear, and new prominent rear spoiler, heightening the impression of stability. The Renault Duster’s tough stance is emphasised by its bold, more horizontal lines, and newly designed 17” Diamond Cut wheels, ensuring a more assertive profile, striking silver roof rails, and front and rear skid plates that support its adventurer credentials. The chrome trim of the grille, alongside a raised waistline and the newly updated C-shaped front and LED rear light signature with Daytime Running Lights, complete the powerful stance of the new Duster.
The current-generation Renault Duster range offers a class-leading ground clearance of 210mm, 30° high approach and 34° departure angles respectively, deeming it suitable for all-terrain driving.
It offers a spacious and passenger-friendly cabin. Numerous clever stowage spaces are easily accessible with improved accessibility to controls, and new backlit steering wheel controls add convenience.
The new Duster also offers a modular interior layout to easily adapt to needs, with the rear bench seat featuring a 1/3 to 2/3 split-fold function, while the boot boasts a best-in-class loading capacity of up to 478L.
Features include onboard GPS navigation, wireless smartphone replication mirror compatibility and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Convenience features include Automatic Climate Control, Speed Limiter and Cruise Control functions, and a semi-flush eight-inch multimedia touchscreen, which not only looks great but also ensures an enhanced connectivity experience.
Safety is provided by ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) in conjunction with EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), rear park distance control and Hill Start Assist.
Tumblr media
Power and performance
The phenomenal new Renault Duster comes in diesel, with two versions of the incredible 1.5 dCi turbo engine – manual or EDC – across the various derivatives.
With the Duster 1.5dCi, driver confidence and comfort are brought to the fore. The diesel 1.5 dCi 4×2’s engine has outputs of 66kW and 210Nm and consumes only 5.1L/100km. The 4×2 EDC and 4×4 manual versions have outputs of 80kW and 250Nm and 260Nm respectively, with impressive consumption from only 4.8L/100km, a major plus in these times.
For greater comfort and pleasure, the six-speed Dual-Clutch EDC automatic gearbox is now available with the 1.5 dCi diesel engine. Upshifting is fast and smooth, with no jerking or loss in acceleration. The fuel consumption is comparable to the manuals from only 4.8L/100km.

Renault sets new mid-term goals after record earnings
French carmaker Renault posted record full-year sales and profits on Friday and set itself ambitious new mid-term goals for both after earnings were boosted by a comprehensive revamp of its product range.
Operating profit jumped 38 percent to 3.282 billion euros in 2016 on 51.2 billion euros in revenue, up 13.1 percent, Renault said. That lifted its operating profit margin to 6.4 percent from 5.2 percent – meeting existing targets a year early.
The results were achieved “in spite of the fact that some of our important markets are still significantly lower,” Chief Financial Officer Clotilde Delbos said. “That means there is plenty of potential for Renault to continue to grow.”
Renault increased its market share in all regions last year, according to sales data published in January, thanks to a recent rush of product launches and the success of low-cost models such as the Duster and Kwid SUVs.
The group set new five-year goals including a 7 percent operating margin and 70 billion euros in revenue – a further 37 percent increase on last year’s level – to be measured in 2022. It raised its proposed dividend to 3.15 euros per share from the 2.40 paid out last year.
The full-year results largely beat market expectations of 3.07 billion euros in operating profit on revenue of 50.84 billion, according to the median of estimates given in an Inquiry Financial poll of nine analysts for Reuters.

Newly Redesigned Renault Duster Planned To Be Revealed In April
Tumblr media
Marking four years in production this year, Renault owned Dacia will reportedly introduce a revised version of the second generation Duster in April as part of an extensive mid-life refresh.
According to France’s L’ Automobile Magazine, the covers will come off towards the end of the month in question with styling reportedly from the all-new Sandero that debuted last year. Allegedly, the update will also be the last major refresh as production is expected to end in 2024 in reported preparation for the production version of the Bigster Concept out the following year.
Despite details being unknown at present, the Renault Duster, according to the publication, is set to receive a new dashboard and infotainment system inside, as well as revised petrol and diesel engines in order to meet Euro 6.d emissions regulations. It will however continue to have the option of four-wheel-drive and also see the EDC dual-clutch gearbox.
The arrival of the facelifted Duster could also be the last hurrah for the Dacia nameplate on the model after the French website, caradisiac.com, reported in 2018 that Renault had decided to stop rebadging it under both marques in certain markets as a way of distinguishing the Dacia marque from its parent. Platform and parts sharing will continue.
In an interview with Automotive News Europe months later, Renault Chief Designer Laurens van den Acker confirmed that the Duster would indeed be the last model to carry both Renault and Dacia badges, before telling Britain’s Autocar not long after that the decision would be to the benefit of both in order for Renault to move upmarket and Dacia to focus on affordability with its own unique identity.
“Cars that are Renault derivatives of Dacias, I want that to stop. I can’t argue with the business sense to do it, because Renaults were expensive for some markets and Dacias were relatively modern cars that were reliable and affordable, so we rebadged them. It helped us gain a foot in those markets. But now we start to sell more cars in markets such as Russia, we will start to differentiate,” van den Acker said.
Once revealed, expect the facelifted Duster to arrive on local shores possibly in 2022 with a line-up of unchanged drivetrains.
