Alchemy, the untouched friend of Witchcraft
Tumblr media
If there is something interesting that is nearly not used on mostly of the witch community, is Alchemy, and is something from which we could take some few useful stuffs.
As always, disclaimer first, I’m not an expert on the subject and I barely if I read a couple of books about the topic (from another 10 untouched ones lol), so as always in life, take what I say with tweezers. This is meant to be a light superficial view to open a door of possibilities in a mix of Witchcraft and Alchemy, is not a thesis. Saying that, to the core of the question.
Alchemy use elements. A lot of them.
The three primes or Tria Prima (the basic 3 materials): Sulfur (Related to the Soul and the principle of combustibility, so it has volatility, can burn, explode, combust), Mercury (Related to the Spirit, the principle of fusibility so the material can be fused together and volatility so a substance vaporizes), and Salt (Relate to the Body, the principle of non-combustibility and non-volatility).
Our beloved Four basic Elements: Air, Earth, Fire, Water.
The Seven Metals associated with the seven classical planets: Lead, corresponding with Saturn. Tin, corresponding with Jupiter. Iron, corresponding with Mars. Gold, corresponding with the Sun. Copper, corresponding with Venus. Mercury, corresponding with Mercury. Silver, corresponding with the Moon.
The 13 Mundane Elements and Later Metals: Antimony, Arsenic, Bismuth, Cobalt, Magnesium, Manganese, Nickel, Oxygen, Phlogiston, Phosphorus, Platinum, Sulfur, Zinc (All of them with a lot of interesting properties and functions, in and out the alchemy world).
The 10 Alchemical Compounds: Acid, Sal ammoniac, Aqua fortis, Aqua regia, Aqua vitae, Amalgam, Cinnabar, Vinegar, Vitriol, Brimstone (All of them also with amazing properties).
And what interesting me the most (at least to my way to do witchcraft), The 12 Alchemical Processes:
Calcination (Aries): The thermal treatment of a solid to removing impurities or volatile substances.
Congelation (Taurus): Term used in medieval and early modern alchemy for the process known today as crystallization. Process by which a solid form into a structure known as a crystal, by precipitating from a solution or freezing.
Fixation (Gemini): Process by which a previously volatile substance is "transformed" into a form (often solid) that is not affected by fire.
Solution (Cancer): Homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent.
Digestion (Leo): A process in which gentle heat is applied to a substance over a period of several weeks.
Distillation (Virgo): Separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation.
Sublimation (Libra): The transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas state, without passing through the liquid state.
Separation (Scorpio): Converts a mixture or solution of chemical substances into two or more distinct product mixtures. Process of distinguishing to two or more substance in order to obtain purity.
Ceration (Sagittarius): Chemical process, by continuously adding a liquid by imbibition to a hard, dry substance while it is heated. Typically, this treatment makes the substance softer.
Fermentation/ Putrefaction (Capricorn): A metabolic process that produces chemical changes in organic substrates through the action of enzymes/ Decomposition of organic matter by bacterial or fungal digestion.
Multiplication (Aquarius): Process to increase the potency of the elixir or projection powder, in order to increase the gains in the subsequent projection.
Projection (Pisces): Process to transmute a lesser substance into a higher form; often lead into gold.
Damn, alchemy even have symbols to Units: Month, Day, Hour, Dram (Unit of mass between 1 and 3 grams), Half Dram, Ounce (Unit of mass, weight or volume of 28 grams, Half Ounce, Scruple (1 grams), Pound (500 grams).
So just with this simple 2 pages of basic Wikipedia info, we have a ton of new things to use. Everything here has specific properties, some more physical and chemical oriented, but others (like the 3 Tria Prima and The 12 Alchemical Processes) have a lot of correspondences with the witch life itself.
The 12 Alchemical Processes could be absolutely used to represent an desired outcome.
Calcination uses thermal treatment, so it can boost the Fire element of a spell. It also “removing impurities or volatile substances”, so can be applied to generate a mild fever to get rid off the flu, or to boost the organs that clean the body (kidneys and liver mostly)
Congelation turns a solid by freezing, can boost the Water element, so all the “freezer spells” can be boosted with this.
Fixation? A volatile substance is transformed into a solid form? Sound pretty much to grounding, or to help to focus an ADHD head as mine, or to put down to earth someone who is VOLATILE AND VIOLENT. Also, Earth element.
Solution? Homogeneous mixture of two or more substances? It sounds like an aid to make two people on conflict to get into an agreement, or to boost a new business by mixing the opportunities with the action. Air element.
Digestion. A process in which gentle heat is applied to a substance over a period of several weeks? It sounds like something that can help any process that need digestion (bad news must be “digested”, hard choices must be “consulted with the pillow”), and the “gentle heat” sounds comforting. Someone is grieving? Maybe Digestion can help them to overcome the awful times.
Distillation. Separating the components or substances. Anything that need to be separated can be helped with this. Relationships that must end, breakups, cut the ties with older things or habits.
Sublimation. The transition of a substance. I heard trans rights? Can this maybe help with your hormones? Or even to transition from what you previously left behind with the distillation, to focus in a new better future.
Separation. Process of distinguishing to two or more substance in order to obtain purity. How to choose from two or more choices? How to pick the better one? The one with purity? Separation maid aid.
Ceration. A hard, dry is heated to make it softer. Make that person less frigid, make the boss less bitchy, make your chronic pain less hurtful, make your bills less heavy, all that you can think in make softer.
Fermentation/ Putrefaction. I personally love this one. Produces changes in organic substrates and decomposition of organic matter by bacterial or fungal digestion. Prime element to curses. All what you want to rid off in the most disgusting way. May their flesh get rotten under a car in a hot summer.
Multiplication. Process to increase the potency of the elixir in order to increase the gains in the subsequent projection. MONEY MONEY MAKE MORE MONEY, all what need to be increased and all what you want to multiply, go go go!
Projection. Transmute a lesser substance into a higher form “lead into gold”. Perfect to get better as a person, to learn to adapt, accept, to grow compassion, love, etc.
At this you can add the Units, the metals and mundane elements, the 4 elements, the tria prima, your crystals and herbs and sigils and all. And your spells will be filled with components and correspondences.
What’s better, a lot of the physical elements are not too hard to get (some yes, they are, but you are not here to make lead into gold with a full set of chemistry), but alchemy use a lot of symbology, so even if you don’t have the physical element, you can use their properties with the symbol, just as any other sigil.
Salt is easy. Tin in a food can. Antimony in mostly all the rocks. Arsenic in apple seeds (technically no but still). Cobalt and Manganese basically everywhere. Magnesium in your own body. Nickel in coins. Oxygen in the air., Phosphorus, Zinc and Sulfur in food. Acid in anything acid lol. Aqua vitae in alcohol (especially Whisky). Vinegar in vinegars.
Long story short, if you feel that maybe you are lacking something, check some books about alchemy would maybe help. Don’t pick super chemical specific pro books and don’t be discouraged by the terms, pick what can be useful to you, and I hope this open some doors and bring more curiosity about this amazing topic.

MCSR As Chemical Compounds
idk either man. expect very little actual explanation and a lot of chemical yapping from a very big nerd
Silverr as Silver Nitrate:
AgNO3
Tumblr media
the above is the crystal structure
appearance is just a white crystal kinda like sugar
it took everything in me to not just make silverr plain Ag
silver nitrate is the most common precursor for all other important silver salts
also an extremely important compound in the development of photography! (and iirc silverr is a film major)
Feinberg as Ozone:
O3
Tumblr media
produced during lightning strikes
pale blue at high ppm
only leaves gas state at cryogenic temperatures
naturally occurring in the stratosphere and absorbs UV rays from the sun
Fruit as Nickel(II) Chloride Hexahydrate:
NiCl2•6H2O
Tumblr media Tumblr media
green
the non-hydrate form is a sort of olive-y yellow color
used to absorb ammonia in gas masks
Raddles as Potassium Permanganate:
KMnO4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes referred to as Purple Potion Powder
goes CRAZY purple when dissolved and is lowkey my favorite chemical
very strong oxidizing agent
one time i stained my hand purple through my glove with this shit idk how it happened
if made in specific solvents can look extremely similar to dragon's breath in minecraft imo
K4 as Octathio[8]circulene:
C16S8
Tumblr media
also referred to as Sulflower (like sulfur and sunflower haha get it)
planar which is fairly uncommon for molecules of this size
can be stacked together to make sheets of sulflowers
Cube as Cubane:
C8H8
Tumblr media
yeah this is self-explanatory
what is interesting though is that ring strain in 4 membered rings/squares is really high, so cubane existing is a bit of a chemical anomaly
i havent read into it enough to know for sure but i suspect that ring strain is why cubane is a precursor to a HELLA STRONG explosive compound
Reignex as PPTA:
Poly-p-paraphenylene terephthalamide
[-CO-C6H4-CO-NH-C6H4-NH-]n
Tumblr media
the name is complicated as shit but this is just kevlar!
aka bulletproof vest material
looks fluffy when not woven completely together
aligning of polymer chains w hydrogen bonds creates EXTREMELY high tensile strength
Mime as Phenylmagnesium Bromide:
C6H5MgBr
Tumblr media
a common grignard reagent aka a compound that can be used in a grignard reaction, an extremely important reaction in organic synthesis as it creates new C-C bonds
another fun fact about grignard reagents is that if water is added to them- or even if they're handled in particularly moist air- they fucking explode
extremely strong nucleophile and base
Poundcake as Xenon Hexafluoride:
XeF6
Tumblr media
Noble gases don't react unless you REALLY make them
so a compound containing xenon is really interesting
colorless as a solid but sublimes (aka skips straight from solid to gas) into a bright yellow gas
fun fact a lot of instances where typical chemistry rules are broken (noble gases not reacting, octet rule in general, etc) involve fluorine to the point ive heard it referred to as a "batshit electron thief"
Fulham as Iron Hexacyanidoferrate:
C18Fe7N18
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also known as prussian blue
extremely common pigment in paints and the first modern synthetic pigment
used extensively in The Great Wave
another one of my favorite molecules bc im biased and like inorganic chem aka things that contain metals
used as an antidote for heavy metal poisoning which is interesting bc it contains cyanide ligands!
Couriway as Bullvalene:
C10H10
Tumblr media
in a state of constant resonance
aka the double bonds are CONSTANTLY shifting and reforming bullvalene into... itself but moved around a little
the bonds fluctuate so rapidly that in nmr analysis each carbon and hydrogen in the entire molecule is read as equivalent (for my non-chem people that's very uncommon and very cool)
formed through photolysis (aka using light/photons to fuel a reaction)

How significant is powder metallurgy for the use of bastardly-to-machine stuff like inconel these days? it's just i was checking out some quotes for DMLS printing recently and there wasn't *that* much of a price delta between alu and stuff like maraging steel and superalloys
I can’t speak to other industries, but in rocket engineering and fusion engineering it’s huge. Everybody loves to 3D print inconel, as well as funky copper alloys (shoutout to GRCop-84) and steel. It has terrific mechanical properties and you can make almost any arbitrary shape. The hot new thing to do is to 3D print as much of your rocket as possible.
HOWEVER, in nuclear fusion, inconel in general is kind of going out of fashion. For those of you in the room who aren't familiar, inconel refers to a class of "superalloys," structural metals that can retain their strength while very close to their melting point. One would think this would be a super useful property in a fusion reactor, and one would be absolutely correct. JET in the UK went hog-wild with inconel, as did TFTR at Princeton.
But, depending on the alloy, inconel is anywhere from 50% to 70% nickel. Nickel is particularly problematic in areas of high neutron flux (like, say, in a fusion reactor), where it captures neutrons and "activates." Almost every element does this to one extent or another, but it's real bad when it happens to nickel.
I'm not a neutronics person, but from what they tell me, the various transmutation reactions give you both radioactive byproducts with annoyingly long half-lives, and pockets of helium that lead to severe embrittlement. A nickel-rich alloy is just not going to have a good time in a fusion power plant, long term.

Swedish researchers say they have developed a new method of recycling batteries from electric vehicles that allows recovery of 100 percent of the aluminum and 98 percent of the lithium.
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have presented the efficient way to recycle metals from spent batteries, and at the same time minimize the loss of valuable raw materials such as nickel, cobalt and manganese.
Furthermore, no expensive or harmful chemicals are required in the process because the researchers use oxalic acid—an organic acid that can be found in the plant kingdom.
“So far, no one has managed to find exactly the right conditions for separating this much lithium using oxalic acid, whilst also removing all the aluminum,” said Léa Rouquette, PhD student in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. “Since all batteries contain aluminum, we need to be able to remove it without losing the other metals.”
In the Chalmers battery recycling lab, Rouquette and research leader Martina Petranikova showed how the new method works—taking the pulverized components in the form of a finely ground black powder and dissolving it in a transparent liquid – oxalic acid.
Rouquette produces both the powder and the liquid in something reminiscent of a kitchen mixer. Although it looks as easy as brewing coffee, the exact procedure is a unique scientific breakthrough. By fine-tuning temperature, concentration and time, the researchers came up with a new recipe for using oxalic acid, an environmentally friendly ingredient that can be found in plants such as rhubarb and spinach.
“We need alternatives to inorganic chemicals. One of the biggest bottlenecks in today’s processes is removing residual materials like aluminum,” says Martina Petranikova, Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers. “This is an innovative method that can offer the recycling industry new alternatives and help solve problems that hinder development.”
The aqueous-based recycling method is called hydrometallurgy. In traditional hydrometallurgy, all the metals in an EV battery cell are dissolved in an inorganic acid. Then, you remove the “impurities” such as aluminum and copper. Lastly, you can separately recover valuable metals such as cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium. Even though the amount of residual aluminum and copper is small, it requires several purification steps and each step in this process can cause lithium loss.
With the new method, the researchers reverse the order and recover the lithium and aluminum first. Thus, they can reduce the waste of valuable metals needed to make new batteries.
The latter part of the process, in which the black mixture is filtered, is also reminiscent of brewing coffee. While aluminum and lithium end up in the liquid, the other metals are left in the “solids”. The next step in the process is to separate aluminum and lithium.
“Since the metals have very different properties, we don’t think it’ll be hard to separate them. Our method is a promising new route for battery recycling – a route that definitely warrants further exploration,” says Rouquette, who published her results in the journal Separation and Purification Technology.
COOL IDEA: Scientists Power Tesla on 9,400-mile Journey With Rolled-up Printed Solar Panels
Petranikova’s research group is involved in various collaborations with companies to develop electric car battery recycling and is a partner in major research and development projects, such as Volvo Cars’ and Northvolt’s Nybat project.
The research was funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, BASE Batteries Sweden, Vinnova.

OK, beginning what I sincerely hope is the last bit of exploration before we can finally go into Baldur's Gate proper: *trumpet fanfare* the basement of that one blacksmith we ran into.
I legitimately don't know if there's anything important down here but I'm being thorough damn it. My liveblogging integrity is important to me.
Tumblr media
There's a waterfall, which automatically makes it more interesting than my basement.
There are several deep gnomes milling around in a room up ahead, one of whom speaks up as Hector and Co approach:
Tumblr media
"The boss is expecting you - hasn't forgotten what you did for him at Moonrise."
Yo, what?? This is Wulbren's hideout?
Tumblr media
The room is a workshop area, full of blacksmithing tools and scattered pieces of scrap metal. Several of the gnomes say vague things about Steel Watch parts when spoken to, leading me to believe Wulbren may be trying to reverse-engineer the automatons currently protecting the city.
Nickels, one of Wulbren's buddies from Moonrise, is here and not enjoying himself:
Tumblr media
"It's stopped - but it'll happen again. It keeps happening! The shivering-shaking-quaking! Don't you feel it?"
Tumblr media
"Yes!" Hector agrees, eager for information. "It keeps happening - what is it?"
Tumblr media
But Nickels has no info to offer. "There's something underneath the city - inside the rock! But when I ask the stone why it shakes, it only screams." His face twists and his voice turns to a pained whimper. "I want to go home..."
Poor guy. :( Hector didn't actually have context the way we did for what was causing the quakes, so I think this might be the first moment where he puts two and two together and connects this to the Wall Meat from Moonrise and knows for certain that the Absolute is what is causing the quakes. Very bad news.
On a lighter note, the lady we saved from being poisoned in the Underdark is here! Nice to see she got reunited with her friends. All she says, though, is that we'll catch up later and that we should go see Wulbren.
So let's go do that!
Hector's opinion on Wulbren at this point is decidedly middling - he seemed OK in Moonrise, then was a dick at Last Light, and then tried to smooth things over again later on because he realized Hector could be useful to him. So Hector is treading carefully here.
Tumblr media
"Good to see you. Wasn't sure you'd make it to the city. Regretting it yet?"
Wulbren always speaks in a very clipped-off tone, matter-of-fact, every syllable flat with determination. But there's a note of anger under it now, and frustration. "I spent a lot of time thinking of worst-case scenarios while I was locked in that cell you plucked me out of at Moonrise," he goes on. "I didn't imagine anything as bad as this. The Gondians have handed Enver Gortash the means to bring about the end of liberty in Baldur's Gate. And the citizens have rolled out the red carpet for their new tyrant!"
His voice lifts angrily. "Resistance fighters are few and far between - my Ironhands, what's left of the Harpers, and you." He raises an eyebrow questioningly at Hector. "I hope."
Tumblr media
Hector debates trying to explain all the elements of the situation that Wulbren has no idea of - the Absolute, the Elder Brain, the trio of Chosen (now down to two)... but then thinks better of it. Perhaps it's better if Wulbren thinks this is only a fight for the fate of the city, and not for the minds of its inhabitants. "Gortash is a dead man," he says instead, matching his matter-of-fact tone to the gnome's. "I have reasons of my own for taking him down."
Tumblr media
Wulbren's jaw sets and he nods, satisfied. "As long as our objective is the same," he says harshly, "the reason doesn't matter to me. We have a common enemy." He stabs out a finger in Hector's direction. "But neither of us gets what we want until we deal with our biggest obstacle."
It's like watching the fuse run down on a powder keg. As if even thinking of the struggle ahead incenses him, Wulbren suddenly explodes with anger, his words coming faster now, almost tripping over each other. "The Steel Watch! They're a threat to you, me, and every man woman and child in the city. They act all civilized - servants of the people - but they only serve one man. When he becomes Grand Duke, it'll only get worse. Laws will change, freedoms will vanish, and soon you'll be accursed and sentenced before you've even committed a crime!"
Hector listens impassively as the other man rages. He has not yet encountered one of these Steel Watch automatons, but everything Wulbren is saying reflects his own worries based on what he's heard so far. Extremely powerful mechanical weapons under the control of an incredibly dangerous man who is poised to get more powerful than ever and is carrying a juggernaut of destruction behind him.
"And the fucking Gondians are to blame for all of it!" Wulbren finishes with a snarl.
Hector blinks. Well, that part of Wulbren's tirade is a little out of left field. He knows Wulbren's antagonism towards this other clan of gnomes - that he considers them responsible for the Ironhand's fall from grace - but thus far he has heard nothing to indicate a connection to Gortash beyond the fact that Wulbren hates both of them.
"Why put the blame on the Gondians?" he asks curiously.
"They invented the Steel Watchers," Wulbren hisses. "And they're building an army of them. They've always been happy to provide their technology to despots in exchange for a stipend and the freedom to work in peace. They would have licked Sarevok's boots, given the chance, and now they'll kiss Gortash's ring while the city screams."
Weren't you the one who said *your* ancestors worked with Sarevok? Hector thinks dryly, though he doesn't speak this thought aloud.
Wulbren, unheeding of any potential hypocrisy he might be indulging in, continues, "I had a plan to put a stop to them. But the way things are now, if we stick our heads above ground, the Watchers are on us like flies on shit."
This is all very useful intelligence, regardless of Hector's personal feelings on Wulbren. And no matter how... intense... the gnome is about his own vendettas, he's right about one thing - he and Hector have a common enemy. And Hector needs allies.
Tumblr media
"Maybe I can help," he says carefully.
"I'm sure you can," Wulbren says at once. "You just need a little assistance, and I can provide it. The Gondians are ingenious. But we're more than equal to them. There's nothing they can build that the Ironhands can't tear down." He rubs his hands together eagerly. "I've built something unique just for that purpose. A runepowder bomb - first of its kind. Fifty wizards high on the Weave couldn't summon this kind of firepower."
Tumblr media
"Get the bomb inside the Gondian facility and... boom. Problem solved."
A long silence. Hector shifts uncomfortably. He does not like what Wulbren is describing at all. First of all - he has immediate skepticism of any philosophy that takes more pride in destroying than creating. But more to the point, Wulbren is talking about tasking him with setting off a bomb of unprecedented power in a major manufacturing facility in the middle of a city center. And he wants all the gnomes inside that facility to die.
"Maybe the Gondians are victims, not oppressors," he points out, deliberately placid against Wulbren's anger. He does not consider Wulbren's outlook at all unbiased here, and he considers Gortash fully capable of using unwilling labor in his plots.
"The Gondians picked their side the minute they took orders from Gortash," Wulbren says coldly. "If they had any courage, they'd have refused him and died like heroes, spitting in his face. Now they'll die like the dogs they are."
Tumblr media
Hector feels a strange prickling up the back of his spine as he is reminded, abruptly, of the uncompromising rage of He Who Was, back in the shadowlands. He remembers the raised spirit of Madeline, whose crime was rooted in fear of the overwhelming power steamrolling through her life - and who Hector allowed the possibility of forgiveness, out there in the darkness.
Wulbren is no creature of the Shadowfell, but this is the same question, Hector is sure of it. Some of those people could be lost in a terrible situation not of their own making. And he will not kill them so brutally without knowing more of the situation than Wulbren's limited perspective. "I'll make contact with the Gondians," he says firmly. "Maybe they'll see reason."
Tumblr media
Wulbren scowls. "Fine. You want to try flapping your gums in the belly of the beast, be my guest. But their idea of diplomacy is a steel fist shoved where the sun don't shine. So take the bomb - just in case I'm right and you're wrong."
Hector nods. "Fine," he says. "I'll take it - but I'll only use it as a last resort." He fully intends not to use it - but Wulbren will be pacified, for now at least, by his taking it.
"As long as you see sense, I don't care when you see it," Wulbren says coolly, handing the device over. "The foundry is in the Lower City, down by the docks. Beautiful building, belching smoke into the sky day and night. Getting inside won't be easy, but when you do, place the bomb at the heart of the facility and get yourself back to street level." His lip curls with a sort of violent glee. "The streets will be clear of Watchers in no time!"
