#Non Government weekly job news

You can be cheap without being a scumbag. Buy used things. Repair them when they wear out. Check every vending machine you pass for forgotten change in the coin return. Get rid of all that excess blood plasma you don’t need for your non-intensive office job. If you want to be a scumbag, though, you have to be constantly looking for new angles.
Around my part of the world, the government has been telling restaurants to cut it out with the plastic shit. Every meal you order, even if it comes to your house, comes complete with half a dozen plastic utensils that just end up in the dump and – more likely than not – choke a dolphin to death. Yeah. A dolphin. Flipper’s dead because McDonalds won’t stop giving you free forks. What do you think about that, reactionaries?
I digress. One of the things that they’ve been getting rid of as a result of this new regulation is plastic straws. So now the straws are made out of paper, which is not a problem with me, but they include those straws even when you buy a bottle of water. Bottles are for chugging, folks. Which means I have tons of leftover straws kicking around my house, and it bothered my scumbag nature to no extent not to have a creative use for them.
Sure, I tried the basics. Arts and crafts. Scale-model fabrication. Drain tubes. Using them as blowguns to knock out the mailman with a powerful paralytic agent so I could interrogate him at my leisure about why my packages take two weeks to clear customs. Nothing really worked, or at least didn’t use up the straws faster than more arrived with my weekly order (usually placed when I needed another water bottle with which to catch a newly-sprouted leak.) That is, until I figured it all out.
Way back in the 1970s, when the world was going to hell because gasoline became not as expensive as it is now, the brave Swedes had a solution. They figured out that they could burn useless trees as fuel, and so developed wood-gas reactors that they strapped to the back of their Volvos. Run out of gas? Chop down a nearby tree and cram that shit into the tank, you’re good to go. All I had to do was make a trip to Swedish eBay and order a several-hundred-pound woodgas conversion kit using someone else’s credit card. Don’t worry, environmentalists, I picked the slower shipping option. Now, I could chuck these paper straws right in there and get like half a block of gas – for free!
The project has been so successful, in fact, that I now find myself visiting fast-food restaurants just to help myself to several boxes of straws. They give me weird looks, sure, but there’s just something about a half-feral scruffy dude burrowing into your restaurant, stealing several hundred paper straws, and then running out the nearest exit that shouts “don’t call the cops yet.” Even though it probably wouldn’t be hard for them to find me in this plume of noxious waxed-paper smoke.

* ◟ : 〔   riz ahmed  ,  non binary + any pronouns 〕  TAJ KHAN ,  some say you’re a  FORTY YEAR OLD  lost soul among the neon lights.  known for being both  HEADSTRONG  and  OVERZEALOUS,  one can’t help but think of DUMBEST GIRL ALIVE  by  100 GECS  when you walk by. are you still THE LOCUST at NEON PARIAHS, even with your reputation as the WRETCH? i think we’ll be seeing more of you and old books on meditation, dog eared and coffee stained; buzzed hair bleached blond with peroxide; a foreboding cheshire grin, blood sneaking from their gums, although we can’t help but think of CHIP (68 kill), MIA (talk to me), BRIGITTE FITZGERALD (ginger snaps) whenever we see you down these rainy streets. TW: allusions to alcoholism
Tumblr media
taj khan plays the part of THE LOCUST. a biblical plague, a sign of pestilence, bringer of famine and unrest. it begins its life as a solitary creature—the grasshopper. orphaned at age twelve, taj had grown all too familiar with that concept. their adolescence blurs together into a shapeless mass that can only be described as cold, rugged survival; characterized by sleepless nights warmed only by the bottle and run-ins with bad men hardened by the world around them. the grasshopper had to grow up quickly to come to terms with one simple fact: there was nothing left for them there. all that remained was homes abandoned and frozen in time, wildlife reclaiming all signs of human resilience, a wide expanse of land like a scar in the shape of what the world used to be. what taj had spent their entire life aching for.
the grasshopper molts five times, shedding old skin weekly until one day, wings emerge. flight extends the creature’s reach across miles of land, across seas, across cityscapes, but it cannot do this without undergoing a specific and unique chemical change. this change began when taj stepped into new york city for the first time. bustling and bright, big but at the same time, so small. they knew nobody, hell, they were nobody. they walked around the crowds with the energy of a man with a target painted on their back. to make a living and support themself in this new world they found themselves in, they forged information that would convince the city’s government that they were local. taj took up dozens of different odd jobs, everything from digging graves to cleaning apartments, just to afford housing and a bite to eat. housing that they were once able to build, food they were once able to hunt. this neon city that they once imagined to be salvation turned into something more akin to damnation. the grasshopper slowly became resentful, not of their fellow citizens, but of the pigs that exist at the top of the totem pole. while they knew they hadn’t been the only one to find flaws in the nation's dogma, outwardly admitting to their allegiances (and lack thereof) was a risky act. but there was something funny about folks from behind the walls—they had a bad habit of bumping into each other.
it was among this group of outsiders that this grasshopper underwent their final transformation into that big, dark, swarming thing we call a locust when the other wastelanders took them under their wing. they informed taj of the ghouls in the business of replacing flesh and blood with wires and silicone, of the bloodsuckers that make those pretty little pills, of the gangs that infest the streets with crime and bloodshed. it lit a fire inside of them that refused to be extinguished. the life they knew before coming to the city wasn’t perfect either; the world they were raised in was completely lawless, access to medicine was severely limited, and disease and famine ravaged what remains of once thriving communities. despite this, humanity continued to persist. little enclaves of survivors gave evidence to the theory that survival was a numbers game. these groups nursed their sick and nurtured their young, life was simple and bloody but god was it beautiful. the grasshopper the locust believes that maybe, with the right amount of elbow grease, new york will free itself from the false notion of rugged individualism. the sun will rise above neon signs and ever growing superstructures and cradle us in its hands once more but before the night is over, ichor from this modern pantheon of false gods demands to be spilled. it wouldn’t be the first time taj would curl their fingers around the handle of a knife. the leader of the neon pariahs demands patience in execution, a slow and silent death. yet, as time passes and the economic divide continues to expand exponentially, they can’t help but feel that lack of action will one day be the group’s downfall. they bite their tongue, they stay in their place, but every second spent not preparing for all out war is another life lost to overwork, to experimentation, to innovation at the cost of everything that makes us human. the locust is hungry for battle and despite how hard it may try, it cannot strip cities bare by its lonesome—it takes an army to turn the world onto its head.

Things have been fairly normal since the whole “supervillain getting in Jamil’s head and making him attack everyone” incident. Dagger is still a near-weekly problem, along with Meltdown and whoever else he happens to be hanging out with at the moment. Other villains come and go, too, some low-level Supers like Reaper and Gibbous, along with non-Super nuisances that the team does their best to curb, too - bank robbers and muggers and kidnappers and such.
No one has heard anything from or about Luna. Then again, no one had heard of her before the incident, either. Which means she’s probably still out there, and could very well be biding her time until she can strike again. None of them ever really talk about her, but Liliana can feel anxiety hanging in the air that wasn’t there before, especially on poor Jamil’s part.
Luna knows exactly where they live, what they look like without their masks on. Probably knows their names and where they work, thanks to rummaging through Jamil’s brain. So not only could she easily return, but she could also tell others the information she learned. They don’t know who she might be associated with. They managed to pin down Reaper one day and quiz him about her and any other new villains in town, but he was less than helpful on the subject.
Even if they could track her down and catch her, Liliana has learned from snippets of conversation that they really have nothing to do with her. It’s something she’s never thought of before, but one reason that there are still so many supervillains around is that there’s no way to arrest them. The government likely could detain them, but no one trusts that it would be humane or that the heroes wouldn’t also be captured in the process of trying to hand them over. Just the thought of the government locking them up makes Liliana sick to her stomach, villains or not.
Normal jails can’t handle them. Normal courtrooms can’t, either, in order to convict them to send them to jail. And no hero wants to be in charge of locking them away themselves, even if they did have the space and technology.
So all they can do for now is damage control, really. Try to stop their crimes as often as they can, try to disrupt whatever plans they have. She doesn’t envy the team their jobs. Between supervillains, regular criminals, and their day jobs, they’re constantly busy.
Every other Saturday, though, after everyone who’s working gets home, they make it a point to go do something together. Since Liliana’s been with them they’ve seen a couple of movies, gone to an arcade, had a picnic, gone to the mall, and eaten out at restaurants a few times. Every experience is a huge deal for her, though she tries to make light of the awe she feels. It’s just been so long since she’s done such normal, fun things. Sometimes she feels like she’s watching someone else’s life.
Today, they’re at the city park. No one can remember whose idea it was to start with, but “the children” - as Quinn likes to fondly dub Nari, Alex, and Jamil - went crazy over the thought of playing on the playground, so here they are. It’s late enough that all of the actual children have gone home. Jamil is trying out every slide, while Quinn judges Nari and Alex in a series of competitions on the monkey bars. Liliana watches everyone from the side, a small smile on her face, but every once in a while she glances over at the empty swings.
Swinging used to be her favorite. Especially on park or school swings like these, with the long chains that could take you so high you felt like you were flying. She and Mila used to see who could go the highest, and try to swing themselves right over the top bar.
It feels silly and childish now. She can’t swing herself right now, anyway. She healed another broken rib - on Nari this time - earlier this week, just a couple of weeks after the pain from Alex’s had finally faded. So there’s no way that she can pump the chains on a swing.
Still…she could just sit in one. That won’t hurt anything. Glancing over at the chin-up contest again, she makes her way over and settles into the plastic seat, gloved hands gripping the chains loosely. Her toes just barely reach the ground, giving her enough leverage that she can give herself a little push. The swing rocks gently. Liliana watches her sneakers as they brush across the dirt, back and forth. She pushes again and swings a little more. Such a simple motion, but it brings so many childhood memories flooding into her mind.
“May I give you a push?”
The sudden question makes her jump and look back over her shoulder, though she recognizes the voice. Jamil is standing behind her with a smile on his face, cheeks flushed from his adventures down the slides.
“Oh, um…y-you don’t have to, I’m…I’m fine.”
“I know I don’t have to, but I’d like to, if you’d like to swing. If not, I’ll leave you be!”
Now her mind is at war. She automatically wants to say no, not wanting to inconvenience him or make him do things for her.
She also really, really wants to swing.
Somehow, without her actually deciding what to say, “Sure?” slips out.
“Alright, hang on!”
Suddenly, she’s flying through the air, and it’s exactly how she remembers it. Colors rush by as the wind blows her curls back off her shoulders, then tangles them around her cheeks again. She grabs onto the chains tighter. Her legs automatically fall into a pumping motion, toes pointing out at the horizon, her eyes bright with exhilaration.
Yes, it pulls at her rib a bit. But she finds she doesn’t really care.
She’s been swinging for a few minutes, oblivious to anything else around her, when another voice breaks in. “Hold on tight, I’m coming through!” A set of hands grab the swing by her hips and shove forward, higher and faster until she’s sure she actually is going to go over the top bar, or more likely, fall out the back of the swing. She squeals in shock, though this sensation is familiar, too. Then she’s dropped abruptly, her stomach following the motion, the swing’s momentum twisting it back and forth as it reaches the bottom again.
Alex is turned around watching her, laughing. He’d come up from behind and grabbed the swing, running all the way underneath it.
Her brother used to do the very same thing, back when she was small enough he could lift her.
“Did I scare you?”
“A, a little.” She’s smiling, though. She can’t help it, even with the pain in her side and the melancholy of missing what used to be.
These people…they treat her like a family should. Better than her family ever did, though she feels like a traitor for thinking it.
She shouldn’t fall for it. If her real family taught her anything, it’s that what seems like love and care won’t last and can’t be trusted. If her own flesh and blood eventually turned on her, then she can’t expect people who were strangers a few months ago to be any different.
But right now, she’s shoving those thoughts deep, deep down. She can worry about all of that later. Right now, for once, she’s going to let herself enjoy the moment.
Nari is shoving and punching Alex and playfully fussing at him for scaring Liliana, and Jamil has jumped up on the swing next to her, standing on one foot and pumping with his arms. She doesn’t move from her spot, just keeps smiling and watching their antics. They’re so full of life and joy, even with the stress they constantly face.
Before long Quinn takes up Jamil’s position without a word, and she’s swinging again. Alex and Jamil balance on the seesaw, attempting circus tricks, screaming like girls when Nari uses her power to make the metal move beneath them, which sends her into fits of laughter.
It’s late when they finally pile into Quinn’s car to head back to HQ. Everyone is tired in a contented way. Alex leans the passenger seat back practically into Nari’s lap, claiming he’s going to take a nap, while she kicks his headrest repeatedly and threatens him. Quinn clears his throat loudly, though, and quiet falls to let him focus and not overwhelm him with sound in the small space.
Liliana leans her head back and watches the moon out the sunroof. Her hands are tucked between her knees to keep her arms from brushing up against Jamil and Nari, who each lean into their respective doors to give her more space. It’s…peaceful. She’s pretty sure she hears someone snoring. She could fall asleep, too, honestly, which is surprising for her since she doesn’t usually feel comfortable sleeping unless she’s alone.
The motion of the car does lull her into a near-dozing state. Her eyes are closed and she’s absentmindedly trying to picture which turn they’re taking when someone gasps and the car suddenly jerks to one side. Liliana’s eyes fly open and she sits up abruptly. There’s a bump and a loud popping and hissing sound, then the car is swerving uncontrollably, headlights sweeping back and forth across the empty road.
The seconds seem to pass in slow motion. Her hands are gripping the seats in front of her, eyes fixated out the front windshield. A cacophony of screams and shouted words fill the car as the steeply sloped side of the road looms in front of them, cutting off abruptly as they tip over the side and begin to fall.
Gravity inverts, and for a moment she’s weightless before being slammed back down. Her temple smashes into something hard and unyielding. Images are swimming through the darkness around her - a cracked window, slumped figures. A beam of light making her wince and turn away.
Someone groans. The car shakes as a door is forced open.
“This one’s still awake.”
“Here, use the syringe.”
There’s movement around her, the click of seatbelts unbuckling too loud in her ears.
“Wait, why are there five?”
“What?”
“This one, who is she? She’s not one of the usuals, is she?”
“Doesn’t matter, just grab her.”
Something is very, very wrong, but she can’t make her body work to do anything about it. The darkness outside is creeping closer inward. She feels her seatbelt loosen and a pair of hands latch onto her, but the darkness closes in completely before she can protest.

Saw your anti-capitalism post on use of AI and its impact on the arts and translation field. I wanna share a story to support (anonymously) but still new to Tumblr so apologize in advance for any etiquette violation! If you want to share this, please help anonymize?
Bit of context, I'm from a non-English speaking country and work corporate in a field that touches on government regulatory documents a lot (legal documents that explain and instruct what law is and how to do law, not things like subpoenas). Our clientele is (almost only) English-speaking so translations of our government legal stuff are almost a weekly occurrence.
We do try to get our clientele to pay for translation so we can commission actual translators to do the work for us. But the reality is with rush deadlines (always in this field!!! whether it's from the government or from the clients), we don't have time to press them for money, and after that don't give the translator enough time to do a good job. (bear in mind, professional, corporate translator with expertise in the topic).
In those cases, the default option is just to run things through google translate and have the staff do the post-editing to make sure it sounds like it's written by a human (cause pfft obviously the company not gonna eat the cost itself...). Understaffed as we are, we do a shit job at it as well. The final product at best only captures the legal and technical nuances, because we're scared shitless to change any seemingly technical terms without extensively researching what it means for the industry. There're no cultural nuances behind the language, especially for high-context communication. Things like politeness, acknowledgment, sympathy, even tactical uses of threat and lying, you know, things you would typically use in a conversation with a human, get lost. Because at the end of the day it's still talking to the government and wanting to get a mutual understanding to get things done. And at the receiving end of our work is another overworked government bureaucrat who's also just trying to hold down their job.
The reason I want to share this is because of a shit anon ask you received about taking your post as "pro-paywall". Sure, I can understand and appreciate the tools being freely available for individual, common use (and I'm sure plenty of NGOs, advocate groups appreciate these free tools for their positive-impact work as well). But free access to this tool ALSO accelerates a race-to-the-bottom of sort FOR THE CORPORATES. Cutting costs by sacrificing quality. It's really just anti-capitalism nuances. Free tool good, BOTH appreciated by ordinary people AND used by shit systems.
Thank you for sharing! This was an interesting read, and you put a lot of my thoughts into words, as well.

Junior Secondary Intern Teachers Ready to Strike as Schools Prepare to Reopen
Tumblr media
Junior Secondary Intern Teachers Ready to Strike as Schools Prepare to Reopen The first batch of Grade 6 students admitted to Junior Secondary School is due to begin on shaky ground, as the intern teachers assigned to them have threatened to strike on Monday, January 8. Intern teachers and the Teachers Service Commission are at odds. The interns, who were hired on a one-time basis, have now stated that they will not return to class until their terms are changed to permanent and pensionable. Beginning Monday, the 21,550 intern teachers have vowed to disrupt the school schedule. Their one-time, 11-month contract expired last year, according to a strike warning issued by JSS Interim Secretary General Daniel Murithi. ALSO READ: JSS Crisis Looms as Teachers Threaten to Down Tools in January Interns must have either a diploma or a college degree to be eligible for work. However, in the primary schools where they are assigned, their employers are mostly seasoned P1 teachers who have been teaching for years. Short-term contracts are not good for job stability or morale. The teachers say that the strike is a last resort after exhausting all reconciliatory and legal avenues to resolve the job conflict. Teachers complain about poor working terms and being overburdened by too many subjects. Subjects in junior secondary school (Grade 7-9) were cut from 14 to nine only this January, based on the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER). In a December 20 circular to regional, county, and subcounty education directors, Basic Education Permanent Secretary Belio Kipsang stated that the decision was made in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The number of weekly lessons has been lowered from 40 to 35, including the Pastoral Programme of Instruction (PPI). ALSO READ: TSC Intern Teachers File Case Over JSS Misallocation of Teaching Subjects Integrated Science and Health Education have been combined into a single study area called Integrated Science, which has five modules. Pre-technical Studies, Computer Studies, and Business Studies have been consolidated into Pre-technical Studies with four courses per week, while Physical Education and Sports, Visual Arts, and Music have been integrated into Visual Arts. The challenges faced by interns has caused animosity, which has shown itself in social media forums where depressed JSS instructors vent their complaints. The vow that the stike shall not to stop at all costs even by TSC's coercion, intimidation, and threats. In the New Year, the TSC must move rapidly and explicitly define the deployment strategy. The needed quantity of teachers is in the tens of thousands. Schools have to operate effectively if the planning heads can clear the chaos and rivalry. CBC must be considered as a serious matter, not as a game of chance. The strike threats comes despite The Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights' ongoing legal case. Last month, the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC) granted interim orders binding the intern teachers to their former contracts with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) until additional rulings on the matter were issued on March 7, 2024. ALSO READ: Current CBC Textbooks to Remain in Use for Pre-Primary to JSS Despite Subject Changes — KICD The Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights filed the lawsuit to dispute the use of duly trained, certified, qualified, and registered instructors as interns. The Forum contended that subjecting instructors in this manner violates the Constitution and fails to place students at the proper level of learning. One of the contract's problematic elements is that the internship is unpaid but comes with a monthly stipend of Sh20,000. Another provision indicates that the internship is a one-time, non-renewable program that will last 11 months, beginning February 1, 2023, and ending December 31, 2023. However, on December 17, President William Ruto told the interns that they would be hired after serving for two years. Internships, he noted, are part of the on-the-job learning process, but the teachers would be absorbed on pensionable terms following the two-year period. ALSO READ: KUPPET Wants TSC to Hire 30,000 JSS Teachers to Handle Grade 8 Students However, Murithi stated on January 2 that the alleged two-year internship policy in question "is non-existent and illegal, and such claims from the president should be treated as propaganda and amount to contempt of public trust and abuse of the presidential office." He went on to say that TSC was pressuring intern teachers to renew non-renewable contracts "without any TSC circular, which is the official way of TSC communications." Employees can request flexible work from the start!
"It has been discovered that flexible working arrangements can assist employees in maintaining a healthy balance between their work and home lives. This is particularly beneficial for employees who have commitments or responsibilities, such as caring for children or vulnerable persons".
According to the proposal made by the UK government, employees would be granted the right to seek remote and flexible working for employees as soon as they start new employment. According to the rule that is currently in place, workers will be required to wait for a period of 26 weeks before they can request flexible work arrangements. However, new legislation will eliminate this requirement.
The administration also intends to pass rules that would make it simpler for individuals with little financial resources to find additional employment opportunities. The Trades Union Congress, on the other hand, stated that the government needs to go "far further."
Tumblr media
According to a new plan that was just unveiled by the government today, employees in the UK will soon be allowed to request flexible work options from the very first day they start a job. The right to request flexible working legislation is going to be modified as part of the Rishi Sunak government's plan to adopt new legislation. In a statement released by the government of the United Kingdom (UK), "millions of employees will have the right to request remote and flexible working from day one as soon as they begin work."
The government of the United Kingdom has announced that employees who are employed under contracts that guarantee them a weekly income that is equal to or less than the Lower Earnings Limit of 123 pounds will now be protected from having exclusivity clauses enforced against them. These clauses previously prevented employees from working for multiple employers at the same time.
More on the story
According to the government, these measures will make it possible for around 1.5 million low-wage workers to make use of the options that are open to them, such as working on various short-term contracts. According to the government, this will be of great advantage to those individuals who require more flexibility about where and when they work, such as students or persons who are responsible for the care of others.
In A Nutshell, Employees in the United Kingdom would now have the ability to request more flexible working arrangements beginning on the first day of their jobs. There is no "one size fits all" approach to workplace arrangements under the new legislation. Workers in the UK who are disabled will benefit from the new legislation.
Tumblr media
According to the data, work opportunities for women have been limited in the UK, and it is possible that this new rule may contribute to the narrowing of pay differentials. Additionally, it will be to the advantage of the nation's disabled workforce.
In support of this point of view, the Equality and Human Rights Commission made the following statement: "Increasing flexible working for employees options at all levels will not only improve access to employment for women and help reduce pay gaps, but it will also support fathers who want a better work-life balance, as well as older people." In addition, flexible working hours can be a helpful reasonable adjustment for disabled workers, which contributes to the reduction of the employment gap that exists between disabled and non-disabled people.
The Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recommended that companies should first explore other available choices before deciding to turn down employees' requests for more flexible work schedules if they are unable to accommodate those requests. Employees will no longer be asked to provide feedback on how their employers dealt with their requests for more remote and flexible working from day one.
'Inclusive'
During the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in the year 2020, around 37% of working individuals performed their jobs from the comfort of their own homes. Since then, a number of companies, including Lloyds Banking Group, have established hundreds of positions that can be permanently fulfilled from the comfort of one's own home. Others, however, argue that it makes personnel less productive and have issued directives for staff to report back to the office.
The proposed proposals include allowing employees to make two requests for flextime working arrangements within any period of 12 months, whereas the existing policy only permits them to make one request. Additionally, it will compel businesses to reply to requests within two months, which is a reduction from the previous requirement of three months. In addition, the government will do away with the requirement that employees provide their employers with suggestions for how their flextime working requests should be handled by the company.
Tumblr media
Flexible Working and Sustainability
There are various advantages for both the business and the workers when it comes to scheduling flexibility. However, embracing flexible scheduling today will help you achieve in the future, even if it represents a huge adjustment from how you've done things in the past.
Both workers and businesses stand to benefit, but let's not overlook the ecological advantages this shift will bring about. The general public will also reap some benefits from this. The benefits of environmental awareness extend to everyone. Individuals, businesses, and the world all benefit from the general trend of people making healthier lifestyle decisions.
Working from home is a viable option for the future. As a result of employees having more leeway in their schedules, businesses are able to save money, increase productivity, and decrease employee turnover. It's becoming the standard, if you will.

Building a Greener and Sustainable Future
While previously sustainability was considered as nice to have, in 2023 and beyond, attitudes of brands are shifting towards accountability. The pandemic shifted the focus on sustainability and clean energy. While sustainability was a general concern before, it is now a major focus of every brand. Hence there couldn't be a better time than now to integrate where businesses are and what improvements are to be made in the shorter and longer term to reduce their carbon footprint.
Brands of all sizes are taking action to overcome the ongoing climate change crisis. It is no longer a part of the brand's mission statement but is emerging as a collective foundational principle that is compelling them to take necessary actions.
Brands are now developing new sustainable strategies. They are ramping up efforts to decrease their environmental impact by switching to more efficient technology. This empowers them to ensure their staff's well-being while conducting business transparently. In 2023, brands not prioritizing sustainability will likely find themselves left behind in this competition.

Tech Job Market in Australia Scaling up Despite Mass Layoff
Tumblr media
In February 2023, the mainstream media and industry websites were awash with news of huge job losses across the Australian tech sector, predominantly in US-owned enterprises.
However, despite the shock imparted by so many largely unexpected sackings, the sector has nevertheless shown extraordinary resilience in terms of job opportunities. Despite the initial gloom, it seems that many of those who found themselves out of work at the beginning of the year are already in new jobs, with the tech industry as a whole in the midst of a job boom.
It would appear that optimism is permeating the sector at all levels, with recruiters reporting new opportunities and roles opening up all the time; in fact, the overall impression is that Australia is suffering from a technology skills shortage, given that the country has only hit 78% of its 2030 tech job target of 1.2 million, according to a report released by the Tech Council of Australia.
And with some of the biggest names in tech running operations in Australia, including Google, Netflix, Twitter, Atlassian, Stripe, Microsoft and many more, anyone with experience and expertise in virtually any part of the sector will find plenty of job options open to them.
This is also in large part due to the fact that there are new jobs being created in non-traditional tech industries, meaning that a wide range of less specialized digital and IT skills are increasingly in demand across the country.
The Tech Sector in Sydney
Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales, is the most populous city in the country and is widely regarded as Australia’s principal tech hub, which is why it is the most likely destination for tech professionals looking to develop their careers in Australia.
However, conditions in the tech sector across the country are such that the workplace environment is generally going to be positive, well compensated, and promote a healthy life/work balance wherever in Australia you’re based.
Generally, the Australian working week is 39 hours, from Monday to Friday (although each state has its own laws in some areas, employment law is made federally and can be found in the Fair Work Act, 2009), with overtime being paid when an employee works beyond their normal daily or weekly hours of work, and/or outside the ordinary spread of their working hours.
Full-time employees receive four weeks’ annual paid leave, the exception being shift workers, who receive five weeks. In addition, employees receive ten days’ paid leave each year, which can be used either during illness or to provide care for a member of the family.
New mothers in Australia are entitled to 12 months of unpaid maternity leave after a year of working for the same company (some businesses will offer paid maternity leave as well).
How to Find Tech Jobs in Australia
For anyone looking for tech jobs in Australia, there are a variety of online job boards and sites that list opportunities in cities across the country.
Seek is one of the biggest and most popular Australian job sites, along with Indeed and Hays. Commonwealth and state governments also list job vacancies on their own websites, as well as advertising on job boards (cyber security is a field in which there is a multitude of government IT jobs advertised regularly).
There are also a number of specialist tech recruiters in Australia. Some will just be Sydney-focused, but most have a national reach and fill positions in all capital cities. Some offer a broad range of jobs in all sectors of the tech industry, while others are a little more specialised.
Talent Locker is a particularly well-known tech recruiter, as are PRA and ScaleUp Recruitment. Luvo Talent is also worth checking out, as are Thornhill and Datasource Services.
The Tech Scene in Canberra
Tumblr media
As mentioned above, there are numerous tech openings working for the Australian government, most of which will be located in Canberra, the nation’s capital, although the federal government has a large presence in Sydney and in most capital cities.
Being a government-centric work environment, jobs in the tech sector tend to pay well in Canberra. The average wage in the ACT is around AUD$80,000 a year, but people working in IT can generally expect to earn significantly more.
For instance, a software engineer can expect to earn in excess of AUD$90,000, a project engager will earn AUD$125,000, while a senior project manager in the IT sector can usually earn more than AUD$142,000 a year.
In Canberra, as elsewhere in Australia, significant numbers of people (particularly those in certain areas of tech) are afforded the opportunity to work remotely at least part of the time (although there are growing demands from employers for workers to get back to the office).
At the same time, remote work, while based overseas, is also becoming more commonplace in the ACT, Sydney and elsewhere in Australia. The latest data reveals that a total of 29% of Australian adults worked remotely in 2022, while 14% are now planning to work remotely from overseas in 2023.
Investment in Training and Education
As a consequence of the widespread skills shortage in tech across Australia, driven in part by the fact that hitherto non-tech jobs and roles nevertheless require digital and IT skills to some extent, Australia is trying to grow the number and variety of training opportunities that are available, both for those already working in tech and those who are looking to join the industry.
Both the federal government and key players in the Australian tech sector are increasingly working together to encourage people of all ages across the country to upskill so that they are better equipped to meet the country’s growing needs, not to mention the nationwide 1.2 million tech job target that the government wants to reach by 2030.
What Next for the Tech Sector in Australia?
Ultimately, the outlook is fairly positive if you are looking for work in the tech sector in Australia, as significant numbers of jobs continue to be available (it is estimated that 70,000 new jobs in the sector have been created in the last twelve months).
However, as stated above, there is a need for people with digital skills in all areas of Australian enterprise — not just the specialist tech sector — and so there are new types of roles opening up all the time, particularly for those with transferable skills.
It is also a relatively good environment for employers at the moment in that although there is something of a skills shortage, a large number of vacancies does mean that skilled and qualified tech workers are not as hesitant as they once might have been to move jobs. So it is possible to attract the best tech talent with the right compensation package.
This does, of course, put upward pressure on wages, but this is inevitable in an environment where those with the right experience, expertise and know-how are consistently in demand.

Rishi Sunak has become the latest Conservative Party leader today - after his two leadership rivals Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt dropped out or failed to get sufficient MP endorsements - and will become the next Prime Minister.
The 200,000 rank and file party will not get a vote as the rules were changed to give parliamentary members (MP) the final say.
The former Chancellor (who ran economy under Boris Johnson) could keep Jeremy Hunt on in his previous government job.
The ‘markets’ and organisations such as the IMF and World Bank will favour fellow globalist Rishi Sunak’s fiscal policies. The buzzword seems to be “stability”!
As Chancellor, Sunak presided over a period in which UK national debt reached record levels of over £2 Trillion.
Government borrowing rates have dropped by 0.25%, which will ease pressure on fixed mortgage rates.
Tax cuts have been reversed and government spending cuts could bring in a new era of austerity and recession.
The country faces a tough winter ahead, with an estimated 8 million people falling behind with their bills, 10% inflation and fuel bills going through the roof.
Among other problems, there is still global financial instability, oil and commodity price inflation and the Ukraine war to deal with.
The BBC said that 100,000 mortgage borrowers will see their fixed rate deal end every month, leading to a possible 300% rise in their mortgage payments.

North America Legal Cannabis Market Worth $47.5 Billion By 2030
Tumblr media
The North America legal cannabis market size is expected to hit USD 47.5 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 15.3% from 2022 to 2030, as per a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is likely to see a marginal increase in demand due to the changing government policies for product legalization and use. Off-late, the population across North America has been made aware of the benefits entailing the use of cannabis for multiple indications. Many start-ups and the federal & private organizations are taking up research and production activities of cannabis-infused products and derivatives, which is further going to propel the market growth.
The use of cannabis has been more prevalent in the form of dried flowers and buds, up until its legalization, it was sold as an illicit drug across North America due to its psychoactive properties and addictive nature. The product usage in medicine is being propelled by the fact that in most products, THC, the compound present in cannabis, responsible for its psychoactive properties, is often omitted or is present in trace amounts. It is still a federally illegal drug but has been legalized in small amounts, majorly for use as medicine for the treatment of chronic pain, neurological conditions, etc. This has been a key factor in the growth of the market as well as a reason behind the vast rate of legitimization of the drug across the region.

Cultivation and production of cannabis and related products have also had a huge economic impact on the region’s economy. In 2021, the U.S. collected USD 3.7 billion in tax revenues for legal cannabis, which was almost twice what it was in 2019. Its legalization is bound to create more jobs, and income for cultivators, manufacturers, etc., and developing interest in the industry has also led to an increase in the number of organizations wanting to invest, thereby propelling the market growth. The marijuana source type segment held the largest market share in 2021. Marijuana consisting of flowers, oils, and tinctures has been used extensively in the region for decades.
The other derivatives segment is estimated to register the fastest CAGR from 2022 to 2030. The others segment includes minor cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, which are used for their benefits for multiple indications. The medical end-use segment held the largest share of the overall revenue in 2021. Cannabis has been legalized in more than 30 states for use in medicinal preparations. The recreational use segment is estimated to record the fastest CAGR from 2022 to 2030. In 2020 and 2021, since its legalization for recreational purposes, it is now being sold over the counter at dedicated stores, thus has been responsible for the overall market growth.
The production and processing of cannabis-derived goods in the U.S., the presence of a huge pool of health-conscious consumers, and the presence of significant manufacturers in the region are propelling the industry growth. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic had an adverse impact on the market. Several dispensaries, such as Bud and Bloom, had a 30.0% surge in weekly sales, according to the Orange County Register, on March 17, 2020. In February 2022, Groff North America, a federally, legal producer of cannabis, gained multiple schedule I registrations from the DEA, including bulk manufacturing, non-bulk manufacturing, exporter, researcher as well as the analytical lab. This is a major step for the regional market.
North America Legal Cannabis Market Report Highlights
The market will grow at a significant rate due to increasing product legalization and rising awareness among consumers about the health benefits of the product
The marijuana source type segment led the market in 2021 due to the increased legalization and its usage for medical purposes
The CBD derivatives segment dominated the market in 2021 due to the increased use of CBD for various medical applications and awareness about CBD’s effectiveness in the treatment of various medical diseases
The recreational end-use segment held the largest revenue share in 2021 due to increased use of cannabis for recreational purposes and high awareness regarding cannabis usage
Key Companies & Market Share Insights
A rise in the number of cannabis-infused products in the market has created a space for a large number of firms to operate within North America. An increasing consumer base has also been responsible for the growth of the overall industry. Furthermore, mergers & acquisitions, partnerships, product launches, and collaborations are projected to increase market competition. Canopy Growth Corp., for example, introduced SurityPro, a new line of CBD-infused products for dogs, in 2021 to improve joint health and flexibility, healthy aging, quiet demeanor, and general physical and mental well-being. Some prominent market players in the North America legal cannabis market are: Insys Therapeutics, SUNDIAL, Cara Therapeutics, Tilray, Aurora Cannabis, The Cronos Group, Jazz Pharmaceuticals

US Employment Change Surprisingly Beats Forecasts
The US non-farm employment change was up from 173K last month to 216K, considerably beating the 168K forecast. Meanwhile, average hourly earnings increased by 0.4%, higher than the 0.3% forecasted. Despite the average hourly earnings growth in December, wage gains have eased towards the end of 2023, which has helped reduce inflation.
Over two and a half million jobs were created for the year in the US, with expectations of further growth in 2024, albeit at a lesser rate. Most notably, employment in healthcare, government, and construction continued to grow; however, jobs in transportation and warehousing were lost. Following the news release, EURUSD is finding support off the lower ascending trendline and 1.1 pivot shown below. With the price closing below 1.1, it looks likely to break through the ascending trendline in the near future.

EURUSD Weekly
Elsewhere, GBPUSD also found support off an ascending trendline and looks likely to break through the resistance at 1.28. If the price breaks through 1.28, then the 200 SMA and 1.3 pivot areas will be key to watch for potential resistance.

Canadian Unemployment Continues to Climb Rapidly as Economic Pressure Builds
The Canadian unemployment rate was 5.8% and missed the forecasted 5.9% on Friday. The result means the Canadian economy has had a steady increase in the unemployment rate throughout 2023. To put further pressure on the economy, the employment change was down from 24.9K last month to 0.1K this month.
As a result of the weak economic news, we can see USDCAD increasing off the 100 SMA and 1.32 support area shown below. The price looks likely to find resistance off the descending trendline, which coincides with the 1.34 pivot area.
