Wood Engraving Wednesday
ALEXANDER ANDERSON
Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) is well-known for popularizing the wood engraving for book illustration in Great Britain and Alexander Anderson (1775-1870) is his American counterpart as one of the earliest of American wood engravers. He trained and worked as a physician and was self-taught as an engraver. By 1820 he committed himself entirely to illustrating books with wood engravings.
Shown here are wood engravings from the 1848 biography The Life of Benjamin Franklin by O. L. Holley, published in New York by educational book publisher George F. Cooledge & Brother. The engraved title page was engraved by Anderson from an illustration by American artist Tompkins Harrison Matteson (1813-1884). The remainder of the illustrations in the book were engraved by Anderson from illustrations by Anderson's student and frequent collaborator William Penn Morgan (active 1811-1872).

Hi Holley! I absolutely L O V E your rainbow sweets design cardigans— especially the black one, but all the colots are so cute... But I wish it had pockets SO MUCH. Do you have any plans at all to make that print into your cardigan pocket design? I would buy one SO FAST. Thanks!!!
Sure, I can definitely do that. I’ll be adding it to my shop tomorrow and post it here once it’s available.😊💖✨🌈💞🌟✨

You inhaled sharply as the burning sensation on your hand intensifies. It is more painful compared to the last time you felt it. "L/N-senpai?" You turned your head towards the locker room's door where Chikara was. "Are you sure you don't need to visit the clinic?" he asked, voice laced with worry. "I could take you there while we're on standby."
"Thank you, Chikara. But please, focus on your upcoming match." You forced a smile. "I can handle this. This wasn't the first time I experienced this," you added while pressing your thumb against the skin were your soulmate's initials were imprinted. "D-Don't worry. Okay? A-And please, do not tell Daichi or Kōshi about this."
He nodded his head in response, but you've noticed the hesitation in his eyes. "O-Okay. But don't hesitate to come to the clinic if it keeps on burning. They probably have something that could help you."
"Noted, now go!" you ordered. "I'll watch you all later."
When he finally left, you lied down on the bench. Cursing whoever your soulmate is for coming to Sendai City Gymnasium today. The match between Karasuno and Shiratorizawa caught everyone's attention. It is a match between the champions and the fallen champs.
Then, you sat properly, doing your best to ignoring the pain you're experiencing. "That would narrow down the list of people I am looking for. It's impossible that they came from Karasuno. I've never felt this kind of pain at school. It is possible that they're one of the spectators or they came from. . . Shiratorizawa."
You stood before heading towards the door. You were determined to find out who causes this pain on you and maybe kick him out of the stadium for today. You can treat him with something later on. You were about to run towards the court when you bumped onto somebody's arm. Your physical pain doubled, as your chest—sort of—hit whoever's arm.
"Miss—"
"Are you alright?" a deep, baritone voice asked. You looked up and found the famous left-handed ace of Shiratorizawa. As much as you wanted to speak, the burning sensation on the skin of your hand tripled. You gripped the sleeve of his jacket tightly that it ended up creased.
The olive-brown eyed man turned to the red-haired man next to him. "Tendō, I will assist her to the infirmary. You should go ahead."
'Tendō' hummed while eyeing you. "Okay."
When you were left with Ushiwaka, he held your hand. You thought he would immediately assist you, but he simply smiled tenderly at you. "I hope I can relieve your pain," he said before caressing the imprint on your hand. "Let me take you to the infirmary," he said.
Oddly, the burning sensation is almost. . . gone.
You look at the man walking beside you. His eyes were on the hallway, while one of his hands were on your side. "E-Excuse me, but. . . May I know your name?" you asked softly.
He glance at you before turning to the door in front of you. He turned the knob and entered the infirmary with you. The standby nurse stood, eyes grew upon seeing him upclose. "Ushijima-san, how may I help you?"
"I am not sure, but you can ask her," he said before glancing at your confused face. "I'll see you later."
Then, he left.
You were unsure who's more confused between you and the nurse. "Miss, may I ask you a question?" you began.
"Go ahead."
"Who was that man earlier?"
"Ushijima Wakatoshi, Shiratorizawa Academy's ace."

Texto: Bruno Bocchini Fotos: Ricardo Kruppa
Diante do estilo “way of life” americano, a picape manteve as linhas tradicionais, mas recebeu cuidados que garantiriam a beleza e “brutalidade” do modelo.

The floral motif of this printed-pattern bookcloth nearly obscures the blind and gilt stamping on the front cover of our copy of A Description of the City of New York, published in 1847.
Decorated bookcloth, including printed-pattern and ribbon-embossed cloth, peaked in popularity in the late 1830s into the 1840s. The trend became less popular beginning in the 1850s, when heavy gilt-stamped designs on ungrained bookcloth dominated the market.

Be in time to see "A New World In My View: Gifts From Gordon W. Bailey" - debuts of contemporary artists and artwork on exhibition at the Speed Art Museum
This exhibit will be closing on March 19, 2017 at the Speed Art Museum:
The Speed Art Museum has received a major gift of 35 contemporary artworks from the Los Angeles-based scholar, advocate, and collector Gordon W. Bailey. All 21 artists, most African-American artists from the southern United States, featured in this gift are making their debuts in the Speed Art Museum’s permanent collection. A selection of these works will be on view in the exhibition A New World in My View: Gifts from Gordon W. Bailey  in the Speed’s contemporary galleries on the second floor of the North building.
Bailey selected a collection of artworks that will enable the Speed to present a more diverse range of contemporary art and further erode the boundaries that have marginalized artists who have been labeled “naïve,” “outsider,” or “self-taught.” The artists whose artwork has been gifted to the Speed include: Leroy Almon, Eddie Arning, Willie Birch, Archie Byron, David Choe, Sam Doyle, Thornton Dial Sr., Roy Ferdinand, Lonnie Holley, Joe Light, Charlie Lucas, Sister Gertrude Morgan, J. B. Murray, O. L. Samuels, Welmon Sharlhorne, Herbert Singleton, Henry Speller, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, James “Son” Thomas, Willie White, and Purvis Young.
“We are deeply fortunate to have found a donor, scholar, and collaborator in Gordon W. Bailey, who is reshaping the way the Speed presents contemporary art,” said Speed Art Museum CEO Ghislain d’Humieres. “This collection will generate conversation and bring many new visitors through our doors.”
“This is a gift carefully crafted with the Speed Art Museum in mind, and reflects Mr. Bailey’s decades-long commitment to fostering these artists and ushering them into the canon of art history,” said Miranda Lash, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Speed. “I am honored and grateful to be working with him in presenting this awe-inspiring work.”
Highlights of the gift include Sam Doyle, Chapel of Ease, c. 1982-84; Willie Birch, Sunday’s Child, 1991; Charlie Lucas, One-Eyed Farmer, 1990s; Lonnie Holley, I Was Raised in the Crate that Fed Me, 1980s; and three Welmon Sharlhorne drawings from the 1990s. Painted on sheet metal, Sam Doyle’s Chapel of Ease captures an eighteen-century church ruin off the coast of South Carolina on St. Helena Island. Originally built by slaves for use by plantation families, after the Civil War, the Chapel of Ease was used by Freedmen and their supporters. Around 1970, Doyle volunteered to serve as caretaker of the historic ruins, and sometimes painted at the site.
Sunday’s Child by New Orleans-based artist Willie Birch is a quintessential example of Birch’s work in papier-mâché, a medium he began employing in the mid-1980s. Birch’s sculpture of a young African-American girl includes a round, glass-covered box affixed to her chest filled with objects, a reference to the materials found in African Nkisi figures. Made from found objects, One-Eyed Farmer by Charlie Lucas captures in semi-abstract form the profile of a farmer and a rural landscape. The sheet metal, bowl, wires, and metal detritus used by Lucas imbue the imagery with dynamic three-dimensional relief. Renowned artist and musician Lonnie Holley created I Was Raised in the Crate that Fed Me, from a found wooden crate, twisted wires and a baby doll. Tangled in its wires, the doll alludes his own challenging upbringing and the universal theme of injustice. Drawn with pen and marker on manila folders, the drawings of Louisiana artist Welmon Sharlhorne bring to life vivid imaginary faces, creatures, buildings and skyscapes.

CARL’S BLOG: CLEBURNE COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE VOL.2
3-16-20: CLEBURNE COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE VOL.2: History of Edgemont:
Some of you have asked why I quit posting stories from CLEBURNE COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE VOL. 1 AND VOL.11.  Because of a lot of interest in Cleburne County I have decided to run stories of Cleburne County, Arkansas for you who would like to treasure memories of the last county organized in Arkansas.  I will not be posting daily.  So, watch my blog sites for stories.  Thanks, and enjoy!  Carl J. Barger, Born and raised in Cleburne County and Author of CLEBURNE COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE VOL. 1 AND 11.
 Chapter 25
History of Edgemont
The little town of Edgemont with a population today of about 150 people is located on Highway 16 in the northern part of Cleburne County. It was once a part of Van Buren County before Cleburne became a county in 1883. The city limits of Edgemont begin north of the Edgemont Bridge which spans across Lake Greers Ferry.
When the first settlers came to Edgemont in the 1840’s and 1850’s, the little community was known as Kinderhook. Kinderhook had one of the first post offices in Van Buren County.
Settlers at Miller, Shiloh, Stark, and Higden got their mail in Kinderhook. The early settlers found rich farmland along the banks of the Little Red River which today is part of Greers Ferry Lake. The land north, west, and east of the Little Red River was populated with virgin pine and lots of hardwood trees. The land being part of the foothills of the Ozark Mountains naturally was rocky and hilly. Little could be grown on the hilly land. Cotton was grown in the bottom land and corn on the hilly land.
In July 1908, the Edgemont Improvement Company was organized. Its first job was to locate, survey, and layout and plat the town of Stark, Cleburne County.
E. T. Stanfield was the president, and stockholders were J. M. Smith and W. J. Ask. The post office was established that year and according to E. T. Stanfield, the founder, the town grew to
five or six hundred people.
Boarding houses in Higden accommodated people working in the timber. The town had three sawmills, a cotton gin, the Globe Cooperate and Lumber Company, several restaurants, a
drug store, a hotel, and a bank.
Edgemont had three churches, Methodist, Christian, and Baptist. It also had a Masonic Lodge and a school that offered a high school degree.
One of the first bridges into the area was a 500-foot swinging bridge built by residents who grew tired of trying to ford the river. Some of the earlier teachers at the Edgemont School were, Mary Lockard, Bud Barnum, Ruby Smith Stark, Billie Jo Rollins, Leota Bailey, and Mrs. Gwen Underwood.
The Missouri and Arkansas Railroad served Edgemont from the early 1900’s until its closing in the 1940’s. The train came right through Edgemont which made it a popular stopping off place. The next train stop was at Settlement near Shirley, Arkansas, which was in Van Buren County. When the Missouri and Arkansas Railroad closed in the 1940’s, the little town of Edgemont began to lose population.
In the 1960’s when Lake Greers Ferry began to fill up, the town was moved to its present location about one mile north of its original town site. Today one can find several old brick and rock foundations of buildings buried beneath the waters of Greers Ferry Lake. What was once good bottom farmland is now all water.
Today, the little town is a tourist attraction. It is surrounded by water on three sides and is a paradise for fishermen and boaters. Today a visitor can visit the Lakefront Restaurant which is noted for serving some of the best fresh fish on Greers Ferry Lake. It has the
Lakefront Lodge and Resort plus several lake cabins and retirement homes. The tourist who travel by R. V.’s can find a great camping area at the Blue Clouds RV and Cabin Resort, just west of town.
Some other attractions that make Edgemont a popular place is Fairfield Bay Resort which is located about eight miles to the west and Greers Ferry which is a growing little resort town located
about three miles to the south. Between Fairfield Bay, Greers Ferry, and Higden, one can find about anything that one needs to have a pleasant visit or home in the area. From Lake Greers Ferry, Edgemont can be seen for miles away. It sits up on a hill that overlooks Greers Ferry. It offers a beautiful showcase from the Lake.
The people of Edgemont are some of the friendliest people in the Ozarks Mountains. They go out of their way to make you feel at home.
History of Kinderhook
The Kinderhook Post Office was established in Van Buren County on January 12, 1837. It was discontinued on January 19, 1839.
It was re-established in Van Buren County on May 6, 1840. It was in what is now Cleburne County. Some say it was located near Stark and some say it was located at the Junction of Highways 16 and 92 which is closer to Edgemont. It was discontinued on December 4, 1894.
After this, the mail came from Shiloh, Arkansas, in Cleburne County.

3 # O poder do chá verde
6 # Água é a melhor bebida do mundo

Power to the People: Testing for Real World Power at the Mopar Nationals
It all comes down to where the rubber meets the road. It might look really cool, have an awesome engine living under the hood, and sound really mean and nasty, but if it doesn’t have the dyno power numbers to back it up, it’s well, lots of talk. Now we’re not here to say that a cool car comes down to just power numbers and realize that many cars are built with different goals in mind. But it is pretty interesting to see what different combos and packages actually produce at the rear wheels.
To find this out we teamed up with the folks at Midwest Mobile Dynojet chassis dyno operated by Redline Motorsports out of Bloomington, IL, which was sponsored by Petty’s Garage.  Held at National Trail Raceway (Columbus, OH) in conjunction with the Mopar Nats in August. The Dyno Showdown allows street-driven, licensed, registered, and insured Mopars to compete for the best power numbers.
We’re also very thankful to the folks at Petty’s Garage for sponsoring the mobile dyno showdown event. Without their help this would not be possible. As well, Petty’s Garage brought out their semi-truck trailer display filled with all kinds of goodies including Petty cars and parts, which was parked adjacent to the dyno action alongside of the National Trail Raceway drag strip. Folks in attendance were able to buy all sorts of performance parts and performance packages to upgrade their Mopars to run like a king! They even had lots of cool T-Shirts there. The folks at Petty’s Garage not only offer cool parts for late-model Dodges and even Jeeps, but they also build complete cars, from late-model Hemi Challengers and Chargers to classic restorations of many domestic makes in their Level Cross, North Carolina facility.
The Dyno Showdown, takes place on Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, while The Mopar Nats drag race, car show and huge (and we mean huge) swap meet occurs over the entire weekend. And most any street-legal Mopar or AMC- vehicle that is registered, licensed, and insured is eligible to compete on the dyno for free. The horsepower classes are separated to one of four classes: Vintage Power-Adder, Vintage Naturally Aspirated, Late-Model Power-Adder, and Late-Model Naturally Aspirated. This year there was no entrant for Vintage Power-Adder. We also included an Editor’s Choice Award to round out four categories, which we provided awards for. To MC this event we had the tremendous help of former Mopar Muscle Editor and now Editor of Car Craft, Johnny Hunkins. As well, we’d like to tip our hat to radio and TV host Clarence Barnes for his great MC duties as well. Thank you.
During the course of the day we had 22 eager competitors who braved the dyno rollers. We were on schedule to have even more dyno competition, but a strong rain storm came down later in the afternoon and left everyone running for cover until after 5:00PM, ending the dyno competition a little ahead of schedule. But we’re definitely looking forward to spinning the rollers next year at The Mopar Nationals in Columbus, Ohio and we hope to see you and your Mopar there!

Don’t Miss: A NEW WORLD IN MY VIEW: GIFTS FROM GORDON W. BAILEY
This exhibit opens November 5, 2016 at the Speed Art Museum:
