#Okayama Division

Text
After much consideration (and a bunch of begging and pleading from some of my acquaintances), I've decided to take the leap and create one or two new divisions. Unfortunately, I jumped the gun and came up with too many ideas. I like all of the divisions I've created and I can't possibly pick one over the other, so...
...I'm leaving that decision up to you all. I'll let you decide which divisions should be the ones I create. Simply vote for the two (and only two) that you like the most. At the end of an extended time period, I'll reveal which teams won.
However, don't count on them being released before the year is over, though. I have ideas for them all, but they'll take a while to implement.
So, without further ado, please feel free to click the link up top to the poll and choose the divisions you like the most. And if you need some info on the divisions, simply click the button below:
1nc09n170: A team of secret hackers whose lives and identities are completely shrouded in both mystery and myth. Even the most talented computer specialists, both in and outside of Chuohku, have managed to find next to nothing about these individuals. Some say that they are more than one person. Others say that they are a team, but because of their impressive technology, they are able to change and switch up their appearances with little to no effort, which makes them extremely hard to identify. The only known thing about them is that they all share one goal: to drag Japan forward into the future, whether they are ready or not...
Aoto Gang: A group of thugs based out of Okayama who rules their city and division with an iron fist in a velvet glove. They are fair and just to those who have earned their favor and pardon. But to all those who disappoint them, or have less than amicable intentions for their town, they show no mercy. Their leader is a well-known Banchō, who is well-known throughout all of Japan despite just being an ordinary hoodlum. It's for this reason that Chuohku kidnapped his younger sister, forcing him and his cohorts to enter the D.R.B., which, in hindsight, may not have been their smartest play...
Drive Team 6: This high-speed trio is known throughout all of Japan for being the forerunners in Tokyo's underground racing scene. By day, they are average Japanese citizens just trying to make a living like every other poor fool. When the sun goes down, however, they discard their personas and put on their racing gear, prepared to zoom down the dangerous highways that they call their racetrack. And now that Chuohku has offered them the chance to join the D.R.B. in order to obtain information for each member, they are determined to prove to all of the other teams out there, that the only way to live and win is to be fast!
Fūrinkazan: These young high-school athletes are known throughout the entire city of Kōfu. And when you realize that this city used to be the stronghold of the great Japanese warlord, Takeda Shingen, then their team name makes sense. No matter what sport they participate in, they all strive to be four things: wind, trees, fire, and mountains. Separately, they are already dangerous. But together, they make an unstoppable force that no one can defeat, whether it's in sports or rapping. And upon hearing that their rivals, the Aoto Gang, have joined the D.R.B., that was all the reason they needed to sign up, themselves!
Maid in Bliss: These three young women are all daughters of one of the most feared generals who ever stepped on the battlefield during WW III. And although an injury sadly put an end to his career as a soldier, that didn't stop him from passing on his gifts to his offspring. Though they may be maids out in the open who are very good at their jobs, they also have a reputation for being quite merciless and bloodthirsty, especially when it comes to those who dare insult their family. It's because of this that one must wonder whether Chuohku knew what they were doing when they decided to abduct their father in hopes that it would force the three of them to join the D.R.B. to rescue him...

OK, so the upcoming adaptation of the Swordsmith Village arc has me in a chokehold, and as such, I've been thinking a lot about the village itself. I've been wondering- have there been any notable instances of whole villages devoted to Swordsmithing? And as a slight, more KNY tangent, how do you think Gyokko managed to locate the village wherein the story happens? (Definitely could have phrased that more elegantly, but whatevs)
Slight tangent? This like two different questions, Wyn, how sly! Just kidding. Before I get too distracted by SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS, I'm going to set aside the Gyokko question and say I have no idea, maybe Ufotable will give us something come April? Perhaps he's got spying methods through his pots, and one of his pots got sold along the route to the village? Perhaps he sent his fish to spy on the conversations between birds, or perhaps one of his fish got caught and eaten in the village? Perhaps while looking for the Blue Spider Lily, this was a totally accidental discovery? I handled this question in my Demon Sibling AU: Version Uzui as having used ninja abilities to spy on conversations between Kakushi and slayers and crows and used that to piece together a location. As for swords, instead of villages solely dedicated to sword production, what you often found was neighborhoods dedicated to a certain kind of product--pottery, textiles, oil, etc--and in the case of a town arising around, say, the construction of an emperor's tomb or a Sengoku era castle, what came first was the workers, and then the town to support the livelihood of the workers. For places that are still famous for sword production (or as the case usually is today, kitchen knife production), it was usually a certain part of town instead of the village a whole, or at least, that would be my guess. These craftsman ultimately were taking clients to make their paycheck however much it was that they cared about their craft, but in the case of Kimetsu no Yaiba, the swordsmiths live by a mission, and the village and Corp support them such that they can be single-mindedly devoted to their craft and not have want of economic prosperity. The whole village can and is be built around their work. And, to make a community around sword production, it typically involved masters of many different crafts--the tatara kiln master who produces the iron, the blacksmith who shapes the blade, the sword polisher, the sword engraver, the craftsman who fits a hilt to it, the craftsman who creates its sheath, and so on. We don't know if every swordsmith in KnY's village can do everything themselves (or perhaps likes doing everything themselves), but with each of them being such strike disciplines, some division of labor and specialization wouldn't surprise me.
Looking back in Japanese history for swordsmiths who produced any any sharp and pretty thing for killing humans as their clients liked, the famous spots various depending on the time period. For example, in the Heian era, the Awataguchi area (the far east end of Sanjo street) of Kyoto was the spot of town to go for finding a swordsmith, though swords produced by masters throughout the country still found their way to the capital too. Then as we move from Heian through Sengoku, the land of Bizen (modern day eastern Okayama Prefecture) was the top producer of swords in this era, and although Sagami (modern day Kanagawa Prefecture) wasn't as prolific, they had some super famous swords produced there. Mino (modern day Gifu Prefecture) didn't come onto the sword producing stage until later, but they supplied a lot of weapons to Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu's armies. Although these areas (and many more) become associated with sword production and their own respective styles and aesthetics, they were perhaps better known by the famous individual swordsmiths they produced.
Nowadays, these are considered the "Big Three" spots for Japanese blade production: Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture, Sanjo City in Niigata Prefecture, and Seki City in Gifu Prefecture. I've mentioned Seki on this blog before, as this is where LiSA is from, and I have personal connections there. I haven't been back since long before my KnY obsession, but I can't believe no one ever told me that part of the city's history and took me the museum! There's also a parade in which knife producers walk around and show off their handiwork, while talking about this with a coworker from another part of Gifu, it was as she was saying "it seems scary" that I was like "THAT SOUNDS AWESOME, I WANNA SEE THAT."
I'm also very partial to eastern Shimane Prefecture, not as much known for the sword production as the iron production. Nowdays, Okuiizumo is the only producer of tamagahane (iron ore of the right quality for Japanese swords), and nearby Yasugi is a major producer of high quality steel for everything from industrial use to kitchen blades. Part of what I really wanted to express in my write-up of sword production as it relates to Kimetsu no Yaiba was that you can't focus solely on the swordsmiths and their direct actions on shaping the blade; Japanese swords are product of nature and management of the finite raw materials directly contributes to the beauty of the final product. Even back in the Heian era, these materials would travel long distances to reach the famous hands of renown swordsmiths, and even after the shaping of the blades, they would still be passed around from craftsman to craftsman before reaching the hands of a master swordsman.

Empowering Elderly Independence: TRAPE's Vision
Tumblr media
  TRAPE's Vision for Well-being Design
Based in Osaka City, TRAPE Co., Ltd. envisions "creating a daily life full of wonderful roles" that unlocks new possibilities for individuals, organizations, and regions through well-being design, providing valuable services to society.   Supporting Municipalities for Independent Living In 2022, TRAPE collaborated on the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare's "Survey and Research Related to Support Packages for Municipal Elderly Care." The outcome was the creation of the "Community Development Support Handbook vol.1.0," adopted as a municipal support advisor dispatch project for nursing care prevention in Okayama Prefecture. Working alongside local municipalities, the project aims to facilitate "community development," empowering the elderly to live independently.
TRAPE's Seven-Year Journey
This year marks the seventh year since TRAPE commenced its long-term care prevention and daily life support comprehensive project. Evolving needs and challenges of the elderly due to demographic shifts and diverse values necessitate flexible and dynamic regional support projects.   Addressing Municipal Concerns Municipalities expressed concerns about navigating the collaborative processes required for effective regional support initiatives. With personnel changes, municipal representatives faced uncertainties in implementing these projects, leading to a sense of helplessness.
Paving the Way for Autonomous Care Prevention
To address these challenges, Okayama Prefecture is joining forces with municipalities to design and co-create a concrete community development plan, fostering independent living for the elderly. The project encompasses an escort support business model.
The 2023 Municipal Support Advisor Dispatch Project
The project aims to promote "community development" where the elderly can live independently, enhancing existing preventive care efforts in municipalities. Expert advice and support will address local issues, fostering a comprehensive approach to projects.   Objectives of the Project Leveraging expertise in regional development, care prevention, and escort support, TRAPE seeks to instill new awareness and successful experiences in municipalities. The goal is to empower autonomous care prevention initiatives and support human resource development.   Enabling Future Initiatives TRAPE will provide continuous "line" support to model municipalities through visits, meetings, and follow-ups. Over time, the experiences of model municipalities will be shared across the prefecture, promoting normative integration and dissemination through training.

Comment from Okayama Prefecture
Okayama Prefectural Children and Welfare Department, Longevity Social Division "Through the preventive care and daily life support comprehensive project, I want to create a community where people can live with a sense of purpose and a role no matter how old they are. Many municipalities are concerned that they do not have enough time and manpower even if they want to make it an "own town" that can be said to be their own and try to review the business so that it is more in line with the actual situation of the region. People in various positions, including those in the nursing care field, learned about TRAPE's efforts to clarify issues and solutions through repeated data analysis and dialogue. I want to revitalize my town with a good general business!”   Sources: THX News & TRAPE Co., Ltd. Read the full article

Pepperland, Okayama, Japan 10/22/1996 - Photos © by Tamaki Obuchi
FVGΛZI, Japan 1996 (first four shows)
Leading up to their three-night stint in Tokyo (go here) and two more nights in Sapporo, Fugazi started off their 1996 Japanese run with another four shows in as many Japanese cities. All of these performances took place in front of very select audiences of 300 people tops, which is remarkable since the year is 1996 and the band was used to cater to much bigger audiences by now, coming off of the release of two critically acclaimed albums in 1993 and 1995 and relentless touring in the course of those same years.
Even though these first four shows of the 1996 Japanese run do not offer all that much in terms of banter or audience participation, and some of the recordings are incomplete, these do merit attention in my book because the band always enjoyed spending time and playing in Japan, the sound quality of the recorded documents is really good overall and some of these venues and places simply speak a great deal to the imagination.
Here’s a short rundown:
Viure Hall, Fukuoka 10/21/1996 (FLS #0794)
Out of the four 1996 Japanese performances discussed here, this one-off show at Viure Hall in Fukuoka is probably my least favorite. I can’t really put my finger on it, but there are a number of drawbacks that play into this feeling: Ian straining his voice, Guy appearing under the weather, the guitar play being slightly off or out of tune,..
However, with just the beginning of Merchandise missing, this is a complete recording, offering 23 live tracks.
Songs off of the upcoming End Hits album (April 1998) were debuted live since August 1996 and you get four of those here.  This includes a rare Guilford Fall in instrumental form (6 are currently listed to have been recorded) as well as the Floating Boy debut (also in instrumental form). Five Corporations is still titled Brand X at this point.
Birthday Pony is on heavy rotation and gets played at 7 out of 9 shows during the Japanese leg of the 1996 tour, including here. Sieve-Fisted Find and Cassavetes make an appearance as well, and were played just once in Japan in 1996.
The set list includes a nice version of Long Division, and a version of Promises with some reverb and dub effects as well as distortion on the vocals. Sweet and Low once again closes out the show and has a nice groove to it, with Brendan playing off the rim and some “snare-scraping” before Ian concludes the evening with “peace my friends.”
The set list:
1. Intro 2. Guilford Fall Instrumental 3. Facet Squared 4. Public Witness Program 5. Bed For The Scraping 6. Do You Like Me 7. Reclamation 8. Place Position 9. Five Corporations 10. Blueprint 11. Long Division 12. Forensic Scene 13. Promises 14. Margin Walker 15. Waiting Room 16. By You 17. Target 18. Birthday Pony 19. Floating Boy Instrumental 20. Sieve-Fisted Find 21. Merchandise 22. Cassavetes 23. Repeater 24. Sweet and Low 25. Outro
Pepperland, Okayama 10/22/1996 (FLS #0795)
Another one-off gig, this time in Okayama. This here is a recording of a performance I enjoy quite a bit, particularly since it took place at Pepperland, a notable venue allegedly the size of a living room or, as per Guy, “easily one of the coolest clubs we’ve ever played anywhere.” Imagine that Fugazi played a sold-out show at a maximum capacity of just 90 people!
The introductory notes and the beginning of the show (maybe other songs) are missing unfortunately, cutting right into Birthday Pony, a staple of this Japanese leg of the 1996 tour since this song as well as No Surprise were played at 7 out of 9 shows.
The set further includes a rare 1996 performance of Song #1 (only 8 are listed at this point), a rare instrumental version of Floating Boy (8 total are listed), an early and rare performance of Break (only 4 listed in 1996)  as well as the only performance of Long Distance Runner in Japan in 1996.
The main set basically packs a bunch of highly energetic songs with just two slower songs thrown in for pacing, while the encore offers some more pensive live cuts. Once Do You Like Me comes crashing, I find the set list pretty much flawless with plenty of highlights including the By You sonic meltdown and seamless transition into Facet Squared.
The sound quality of this recording is really good, with just some occasional slight distortion on Ian’s vocals, as well as marginal cuts in between songs.
21 live songs have been preserved for posterity.
The set list:
1. Birthday Pony 2. Downed City 3. Styrofoam 4. Caustic Acrostic 5. Bed For The Scraping 6. Target 7. Song #1 8. No Surprise 9. Interlude 1 10. Five Corporations 11. Do You Like Me 12. Instrument 13. Give Me The Cure 14. Interlude 2 15. By You 16. Facet Squared 17. Floating Boy Instrumental 18. Blueprint 19. Encore 20. Break 21. Long Distance Runner 22. Rend It 23. Sweet and Low 24. Outro
Sun Hall, Osaka 10/23/1996 (FLS #0796)
“Do you really remember, do you really remember, do you really remember,...”
The third and last time Fugazi would perform in the city of Osaka, and the second time the show took place at Sun Hall.
I reckon this recording would have been an absolute favorite and highlight in my book had it not been incomplete. A significant part of Glueman, and with it possibly part of a more elaborate encore altogether is missing, which is absolutely gutting, since the band is pushing the envelope sonically with this one (note that you still get 5+ minutes of brilliance).
Still, the interplay on the available songs is phenomenal, and the audio quality pretty much impeccable which makes it well worth checking out.
The set list includes a rare Guilford Fall instrumental (6 are currently listed to have been recorded), a rare live rendering of Glueman in 1996 (5 are listed) as well as the only performance of Runaway Return in Japan in 1996.
Both Birthday Pony and No Surprise are staples of this Japanese leg of the 1996 tour (played at 7 out of 9 shows).
Sweet and Low to close out the set (again) definitely is another highlight and gets drawn out, featuring some nice guitar feedback.
The recording documents a short set of just 16 songs but, as mentioned, is incomplete.
The set list:
1. Intro 2. Guilford Fall Instrumental 3. Facet Squared 4. Downed City 5. And The Same 6. Place Position 7. Birthday Pony 8. Margin Walker 9. Reclamation 10. No Surprise 11. Long Division 12. Runaway Return 13. Bed for the Scraping 14. Target 15. By You 16. Glueman 17. Sweet and Low
Heartland, Nagoya 10/25/1996 (FLS #0797)
The second and last time Fugazi played the city of Nagoya, having been there before in 1993.
This is an overall strong and enjoyable show and performance, but it grabs me a bit less than the previous two shows in Okayama and Osaka, maybe because this recording sounds slightly muffled (with again a bit of distortion on Ian’s vocals) or because of the general flow and some set list choices.
Birthday Pony and No Surprise make yet another appearance here, and were played at 7 out of 9 shows on this Japanese leg of the 1996 tour.
More interestingly though, this particular performance showcases one-off versions of Exit Only, Last Chance for a Slow Dance (of which only 5 performances in 1996 are currently listed), Burning Too (just 2 listed in 1996) and Break-In (2 listed performances in 1996) in the course of the Japanese leg of the 1996 tour.
Plus, you get an early and rare (only 4 listed in 1996) performance of Break, as well as a rare instrumental version of Floating Boy (8 in total are listed).
Another great and dubby version of Promises that clocks in at 8+ minutes probably is my highlight.
The recording presented here is nearly complete with just a snippet of Five Corporations missing (this version does include a cool prolonged intro) and offers 20 live tracks. Note that the instrumentation and vocals cut out during part of Caustic Acrostic, with the exception of Joe’s bass.
The set list:
1. Intro 2. Birthday Pony 3. Smallpox Champion 4. Merchandise 5. Caustic Acrostic 6. Reclamation 7. Exit Only 8. Break 9. Last Chance For a Slow Dance 10. Burning Too 11. Break-In 12. Bed For The Scraping 13. Target 14. Great Cop 15. Do You Like Me 16. By You 17. Floating Boy Instrumental 18. No Surprise 19. Promises 20. Encore 1 21. Five Corporations 22. Forensic Scene 23. Outro

(Early feminist and socialist efforts in Japan: excerpt from A History of Japan, 2nd ed., by Conrad Totman, 2005)
On the surface of the land, meanwhile, the burgeoning textile industry was heavily staffed by the teenage daughters of hard-pressed rural families, the girls commonly being lured to mill work by recruiters who misrepresented both wage arrangements and workplace conditions. One angry young silk worker wrote in 1888:
“Silk thread manufacturers, using contracts as a shield, treat us abominably. They think we are like slaves, like dirt. We think the silk-thread bosses are vipers, are our bitter enemies.”[8]
As factory lighting was installed during the eighties, thread mills became notorious for their long hours and use of child labor. One elderly woman, recalling her years as a girl in the silk mills during the nineties, wrote:
“In the lamplit factory we worked from morning darkness to about ten o'clock at night. By the time we had finished work we could hardly stand on our feet.”
Unsurprisingly the workers protested occasionally and absconded frequently, the majority breaking contract and fleeing their jobs within six months of recruitment. They did so, moreover, despite "barbed wire, high walls, guarantee deposits, and company regulations," and despite the hardship that doing so might cause their families, whose ability to repay debts often depended on daughterly income.[9]
ACTIVIST WOMEN
In Japan, as elsewhere, industrialization generated pollution, gave rise to urban labor problems, complicated rural life, and in due course radically diminished village influence on society at large. At the same time, however, it was broadening the general public's intellectual vistas, creating new career alternatives, and to an unprecedented degree institutionalizing the separation of household and work place. These trends affected women as well as men, and as a result questions about their roles and rights began to acquire greater visibility than in the past, foreshadowing an even more heightened presence in later years.
When architects of the Meiji state undertook to define social and political roles in the years around 1890, it will be recalled, they utilized principles and practices of both indigenous and alien provenance to forge a centralized, paternalistic regime that would, they hoped, build a rich and strong Japan, a "modern" society, a Great Power. How best to situate women in this new order was a question that evoked much comment. Some men and women advocated expanded roles for women, especially during the 1870s when everything seemed in flux. Kishida Toshiko, the daughter of an established Kyoto merchant, was well versed in progressive European thought, and she became one of the day's most eloquent proponents of women's rights. She spoke widely and effectively on behalf of education and opportunity for women, declaring in 1883, at age twenty:
“Equality, independence, respect, and a monogamous relationship are the hallmarks of relationships between men and women in a civilized society.”[19]
A handful of men echoed this view, but as national affairs stabilized during the later 1880s, a counter-argument came to prevail, one that reflected the growing separateness of home and work place and that was grounded in both foreign and domestic precedents. It defined woman's proper role as that of responsible operative of the household, dedicated homemaker, "good wife; wise mother" (ryōsai kenbo).
In 1899, when the Education Ministry was prodding prefectural authorities to establish more high schools for women, a Ministry official explained the government's reasoning this way:
“Since the family is the root of the nation, it is the vocation of women who become housewives to be good wives and wise mothers, and girls' high schools are necessary to provide appropriate education enabling girls from middle- and upper-middle-class families to carry out this vocation.”
Viewing the proper role of women in these terms, Meiji leaders encouraged them to pursue appropriate education. They also argued, however, that women should be excluded from politics lest such involvement endanger their morals, conduce to social disorder, and compromise their role as wife and mother. Accordingly Article 5 of the Police Security Regulations of 1890, reaffirmed in 1900, barred women from joining political organizations, participating in political meetings, voting, or standing for office.
This official posture failed to satisfy the growing number of women who wished to pursue other careers or expand their range of life choices.[20] Nor did it address social issues that affected women in general, notably concubinage, prostitution, and male drunkenness, but also harsh conditions of the working poor, such as those in the textile mills. Indeed, the situation of the working poor seems to have been as far beyond the mental horizon of the Meiji elite as of elites elsewhere. Worst of all, perhaps, were the lives of the earlier-mentioned women coal miners. Recalled one observer:
“The life of the female coal-miner was appalling. Returning black and grimy from a day's work in the pits with their husbands, they immediately had to start preparing meals. In those days there were no nursery facilities, so infants were placed in the care of others. Mothers returned from the mines to nurse their babies. Men would return from their work to bathe and sit back and relax, displaying their tattoos and drinking sake. This was the accepted behaviour of these lowly people, and no man would be found helping with what were designated as women's tasks. If a woman so much as protested, she would be beaten.”[21]
Precisely because mining was a dirty and dangerous occupation, however, mine operators had to pay wages that substantially exceeded those of surface jobs as a way to attract and retain workers. For women as well as men, the lure of better pay sufficed. Indeed, a few years later, when government reformers enacted legislation to prohibit women from working in the pits for reasons of public health, some women severely resented their exclusion from jobs that paid much better than what they could earn above ground.[22]
These women miners generally were mature and married. Younger, single rural girls commonly took jobs in the textile mills and as domestic servants, while poor urban women and girls held a wide range of jobs: as "lowgrade factory workers, used paper and junk collectors, . .. peddlers, papermakers, . . . fishmongers, and vegetable-sellers," working as day laborers, and engaging in "cart-pushing and itinerant tea-picking.”23
These working poor were nearly as invisible to activist women as they were to male leaders. Even among the women of privilege, moreover, differing needs, priorities, and interests led to the pursuit of differing agendas. In consequence it was exceedingly difficult for activists to form a united front and promote a shared program for change in women's circumstances.
One of those who confronted most thoughtfully the dilemma of a fragmented female populace was Fukuda Hideko of Okayama samurai ancestry. An admirer of Kishida, she spent some years as radical political activist and prison inmate before settling down to a life devoted to teaching and feminist socialist activism. In 1907 Fukuda established a magazine, Sekai Fujin (Women of the World), as a vehicle of feminist-socialist thought and information. In the editorial that launched her new venture, she declared,
“as far as women are concerned, virtually everything is coercive and oppressive, making it imperative that we women rise up and forcefully develop our own social movement.”[24]
Recognizing with particular clarity the social basis of the divisions that prevented women from developing a united front, she frequently pointed out that women labored under both gender and class discrimination. For that reason, she argued in another essay the same year, women should support socialism:
“While socialism prevents the exploitation of workers by the capitalist class, it also stops the arrogance of the male class against women. It gets rid of the rich and poor classes, and removes sexual discrimination.”[25]
In hopes of appealing to the broadest spectrum of women, Fukuda chose as a major goal of Sekai Fujin the repeal of the above-noted Article 5. But even that focus failed to elicit a unified women's movement. Harassed by authorities and unsympathetic to the sorts of paternalistic governmental measures that many less fortunate women welcomed, Fukuda was unable to build a broad movement. A few years later the women's movement drifted into desuetude in the wake of a plot to assassinate the emperor (noted below), in which the young and angry journalist-turned-anarchist Kanno Suga became deeply involved at the price of her life.
Not all women activists were so firmly opposed to the established order. For some the new influences sweeping across Meiji Japan seemed to offer rich opportunity, even as wife and mother. That view was evident in the journal Jogaku zasshi (Women's Education Magazine), which appeared in 526 issues during 1885-1904, until it failed financially.[26]
A number of women founded girls' schools where they instructed students in values and subjects that could accommodate the "good wife; wise mother" vision even while promoting a broader sense of women's possibilities (see figure 14.1). Most famously, in 1901 Tsuda Ume founded the Women's English School (Joshi Eigaku Juku), which grew into today's Tsuda Women's University. She urged her students not only to be ladylike but also to pursue practical schooling in marketable skills. As she observed in a speech of 1915, "Economic independence is the one thing that can save a woman from an unsuitable or distasteful marriage urged on her by relatives."[27] Educators such as she gave encouragement to the growing number of young women who pursued the study of medicine, training them to be licensed as nurses and after 1912 as doctors. And even larger numbers were trained as school teachers, especially for women's schools.
Among noted women of the day, the one who enjoyed the most success was Okumura Ioko, daughter of a Buddhist priest in Kyushu. An energetic participant in Restoration politics, she became a firm supporter of Meiji continental expansion, traveled about Northeast Asia, and in 1901 established the Patriotic Women's Society. Its main functions were to assist troops departing for war, aid those families of soldiers that were experiencing hardship, and console the bereaved. Because Okumura's organization so clearly contributed to government policy, she quickly won the backing of leaders and her organization grew with striking rapidity, counting 465,000 members by 1905 and a million or more by World War I, with branches in villages throughout the realm.
[...]
SOCIALIST INTELLECTUALS
One factor that spurred officials and pundits to counsel lowered expectations for the young, to favor movements such as Okumura' s Patriotic Women's Society, and to attempt to outflank or suppress the efforts of feminists, labor unionists, and other critics of the newly established Meiji order was their awareness of the growing attention intellectuals were giving to social problems and tensions of the day. During the 1890s some observers began to think about society's problems in terms of the recently articulated Marxist and other socialist analyses that they encountered through study abroad and the discussion of imported texts. In 1901 a group in Tokyo formed the Social Democratic Party, declaring as their goal:
“to abolish the gap between rich and poor and secure a victory for pacificism in the world by means of genuine socialism and democracy.”[31]
The newly formed government of Prime Minister Katsura Tarō responded to the group's manifesto by promptly seizing all copies of the document and ordering the party disbanded. The Minister of the Interior, who ordered the party's dissolution, explained the issue this way:
“Other countries all have their hands full with the socialist party and are doing their best to suppress it. We in Japan must likewise devote all our efforts to suppressing it.”[32]
That response notwithstanding, the handful of intellectuals who comprised this initial socialist movement continued their peaceful proselytizing over the next several years, and in early 1906 the government allowed them to form a new political party. During 1906-7, however, after wartime boom and patriotic zeal had given way to industrial slump and political anger, the country was racked by strikes and labor disputes involving both mine and surface workers. That turmoil, together with socialist editorializing (and especially socialist criticism of government action in suppressing the labor protest at Ashio), led to the new party's disbandment. By then Kōtoku Shūsui, a journalist, socialist party participant, and critic of the Ashio mine operation, was also denouncing the harsh government policy in Korea. He called for more radical revolutionary action at home, even as he and others were having run-ins with the police. Moreover, some of his associates were mounting a rhetorical attack on the imperial institution itself.
These developments led government leaders to see the socialists as a dangerous threat to their new constitutional order. Employing much the same "preventive" logic as in 1901, Prime Minister Katsura argued in 1908:
“Although socialists at the moment are said to constitute little more than a thin thread of smoke, if we overlook this thread of smoke, it will someday develop the force of a wildfire, and then it would be too late for anything but regrets.”[33]
Therefore, he argued, their meetings and publications must be controlled and their growth stymied. The government cracked down, using tight surveillence, jailings, suppression of the socialist press, and severe constraints on speakers.
Nevertheless, underground socialist activity continued. In the spring of 1910 authorities discovered a plot to mount a bomb attack against the emperor, presumably as part of an attempt at violent revolution that was inspired by recent anarchist actions in Russia. Viewed by the government and press as an utterly heinous crime - and as an opportunity to squelch socialism - that incident led to the arrest, trial, and eventual conviction and execution of Kōtoku, along with Kanno and ten others, on the charge of high treason.34
The government took other steps, as well, to forestall dissident activity. It moved to consolidate its control of Korea by replacing the existing Korean administration with a Japanese governor-generalship. At home it established a special police force, the Tokubetsu Kōtō Keisatsu (Tokkō or Special Higher Police), to watch for "dangerous thought." And, as noted above, it gave formal approval to the creation of a locally-based, nationwide army reserve system. That reserve, its leaders hoped, would assure that the army's ideals of imperial loyalism, durable social order, and diligent national service came to pervade community life, thereby eliminating the threats of sedition, selfishness, and sloth.
The government employed carrots as well as sticks, most notably the aforementioned Factory Act of 1911. With those acts of repression and concession the socialist movement became inactive, not reviving until the Russian Revolution brought it a new surge of hope.

King of Prism SSS Part 2 (Kakeru, Joji, Minato) Theatrical Weekly Videos screenshots & translation
Like before, if you actually obtain the video of these (an extra on the DVD/BluRay) feel free to use my translation to sub it AS LONG AS you credit me and this blog!

Translator’s notes: For Kakeru’s I translated the audio and not the text on the screen since it’s basically the same thing. But if anyone wants an exact translation of the screen let me know. Joji made me do actual research on Okayama since I couldn’t understand what he was saying. (So I actually linked to everything he talks about since I went that far anyway!) I’m afraid I may have still missed a few words from his dialogue in the end though. He just talks so fast. For Minato’s, yes that’s Masashi Igarashi doing the cooking. There is an extended version on the DVD where you can see his face as he talks to the camera. It literally looks like the filmed this in an office breakroom by the way ahah.

Cabbage and egg stir-fry!
It’s really easy to make!
Tumblr media
After heating up the pan, add some sesame seed oil.
Tumblr media
Tsubasa: Be extra careful when you are around a hot stove.
Tumblr media
Minato: And then fry up the cabbage.
Tumblr media
Tsubasa: Ushio, can you handle it?
Ushio: This sort of thing is a piece of cake!
Tumblr media
Misaki: The color of the cabbage is lookin’ good.
Minato: When the cabbage is nice and hot, add a bit of seasoning and some egg.
Tsubasa: You just drop in the whole egg without mixing it first?
Minato: Mixing it while it’s in the frying pan is the Minato-style!
Tumblr media
All: Ohhhhh!
Minato: And when the egg is about half cooked, then add soy sauce as you like, turn up the heat, and mix it all together.
Tumblr media
Gen: It smells so good!
Nagisa: You don’t add any other seasoning?
Minato: This draws out the flavor of the cabbage, so you don’t need anything else. Turn off the heat just before the egg is fully cooked, plate it, and you’re done!
Tumblr media
All: YAAAAY!
Minato: Well then...
Tumblr media
All: LET’S EAT!

Toshihiko Koga (古賀 稔彦 Koga Toshihiko, born November 21, 1967) is a retired judoka and Olympic champion who competed in the -71 kg and -78 kg divisions. Koga is regarded as having perhaps the greatest ippon seoi nage ever.BiographyKoga was born in Kitashigeyasu, Saga, Japan. He began judo in elementary school. He traveled to Tokyo during junior-high school to enter Kodogakusha, a judo school later attended by Olympic gold medalists Hidehiko Yoshida and Makoto Takimoto. He continued his education at the Nippon Sport Science University,  and captured several awards including five consecutive championships at  the Kodokan Cup and six consecutive championships at the All-Japan Judo Championships (all in the 71 kg division). He placed 3rd in the 1987 World Judo Championships held in Essen, and was chosen to participate in the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he lost in the 3rd round of the competition. Koga returned to the Olympics in 1992 after winning the 1989 and 1991 World Judo Championships, but seriously injured his left knee during a randori (sparring) session against Hidehiko Yoshida, which prevented him from using his best technique; the Ippon Seoinage.[1] He won the gold medal overcoming this injury, and was given the JOC Sports Award by the Japanese Olympic Committee.Koga briefly retired from competitive judo after his victory at the Olympics, but made his return with a gold medal at the 1995 World Judo Championships in Chiba, Japan. He suffered a surprising defeat by ippon in a qualification match for the 1996 Summer Olympics,  but was chosen as the representative anyway because of his past  experience in the Olympic games. He ended his third appearance at the  Olympics with a silver medal in the -78 kg division.Koga announced his final retirement from competition in 2000, and  became the head coach for the All-Japan women's judo team. In April  2003, he founded the Koga Juku, a judo school for young children, in Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki. One of his pupils, Ayumi Tanimoto, won the gold medal in the -63 kg division at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He became the head coach of the International Pacific University's judo team (located in Akaiwa, Okayama) in April 2007, and has enjoyed celebrity status in Japan as a 7th dan rank holder in judo,
