Books, November - December 2023
The Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature - Starhawk [there are a bunch of things about Starhawk's ethos that I find...let's say: misguided, over-dogmatic, verging on downright dippy...but one thing I absolutely cannot argue with is how joyfully observant her nature writing is]
Alanna: The First Adventure - Tamora Pierce [loved this book as a 13 year old; kind of hilarious to realize that WOW, they're all a bunch of terrible bullies and someone should maybe look into that? (one thing I will say about Tamora Pierce: she doesn't always do it gracefully, and sometimes she introduces brand new problems as she goes, but she does look back at her work, think, "I'd like a do over on that," and try again, which I have to respect)]
Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller - Oliver Darkshire
A Restless Truth - Freya Marske [I was ambivalent about the first book in this series; this still has some pacing problems, but overall I liked it a lot more!]
How Can I Help You - Laura Sims [an excess of serial killers, afaik, but otherwise this gets an awful lot right about the circ desk]
Hen Fever - Olivia Waite
The Door in the Hedge - Robin McKinley
In the Hand of the Goddess - Tamora Pierce [this annotation is an apology to everyone who endured my not-like-the-other-girls years]
The Enigma Game - Elizabeth Wein

Currently reading: Once Upon a Tome by Oliver Darkshire, subtitled "the misadventures of a rare bookseller"
Last series: That I finished? Justified. I acquired new blorbos
Favourite movie: I have too many favourite movies so let's go with Everybody Wants Some because it gives me an excuse to use this gif
Tumblr media
Sweet, spicy or savoury: Savoury. Gimme that cheese!
Currently obsessed listening: I'm on a 70s kick at the moment but I also fell down a Nirvana rabbit hole the other day so that was fun

Thank you @armchairaleck for tagging, I feel a bit exposed and I don't think I`d dare to tag anyone - I just dont know anyone, so sad. Sorry!
Three Ships: three? pfff. The only one ship I check regularly is rorveth. I may think of a character Id like to read about and then see who people ship them with, trying to get some inspo... if I like it, its a micro ship for me so I would sometimes scroll through thinking maybe Ill stick with them for a while; does not last long though. is this bad?
First Ship Ever: oh my first ever fic read was Thranduil and OC and then somehow, without realizing, I clicked into Thranduil/Bard, I remember thinking oh my why I did not think of it before, and the rest is history.
Last Movie: I did go to see last Guardians of the Galaxy... I do like these on the big screen, fairy tales they are.
Currently Reading: Once Upon a Tome: A Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller, very fun, wordy but lively. I have a few books from the library but I haven't even open them, yet. I think one is a detective story that happened in Cloisters, the MET? I thought I might be entertained by a novel in museum setting (and hopefully not annoyed, since they usually do all of it wrong! Think how in the movie, Wonder Woman is a conservator at The MET, haha).
Currently Watching: new season of Black Mirror. Spooky!
Currently Consuming: homemade ice cream cake and a glass of rose. Its a heatwave here.
Currently Craving: some exercise without being afraid to screw my body up, again.

As a bookseller, you grow used to encountering cursed tomes every now and then. The regrettable part is that no one you inform about this will hold your claim credible, and it's very difficult to explain to your Accounts department, or the board of directors in their annual review, that a certain portion of the stock isn't really saleable because it keeps killing the customers who try to buy it.

REVIEW: Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller
Unrelated note, but I wish that the mobile app didn’t make my portrait so enormous. Or maybe I wish that my portrait looked nicer.

I'm only 46 pages in but Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller by Oliver Darkshire has to be the most hilarious book I've read in a long time.

*In which the blogger ends up actually doing the thing which he named his account after as a joke five years ago*
In some sort of bizarre twist of fate, I now have a job where I will actually write book reviews for an actual print newspaper. I think I named this blog back in 2019 or something, which makes all of this weirder. Obviously I have some sort of psychic power.  Anyways, I’ll probably post links to my reviews when they’re done, as well as any additional thoughts that can’t fit into the newspaper for the books that I read. They’ll be the sandwich crusts of my critique sandwiches. Or exclusive content, that sounds better. The first two books that I’m gonna be reviewing are “Once Upon A Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller” By Oliver Darkshire and “The Secret Book of Flora Lea” by Patti Callahan Henry. There are a lot of interesting parallels between these books that I could never have imagined when I grabbed them from the local library, lol. Keep an eye out for those I guess!

Reader, I did the unthinkable and interrupted him. [...] Hell hath no fury, they say, like a man treated the same way as he treats women. He sputtered. He turned a shade of red that traveled upwards across his body as in a cartoon character, and to this day I would swear under oath that his head actually inflated a few inches.
I asked him to let us get on with our work, which caused him to spin in a spiral of angry comments, threatening to speak to the manager.

I think one was to be guided by the cardinal rule which supercedes all others: one does not sell books to Nazis. A bookshop is not a court. As a custodian of book you can use your discretion to decide who you sell to, and unlike a court you don't have to give a reason. If you sell to one racist, you'll just attract more of them. [...] And indeed, we don't hand out a quiz to everyone who steps over our threshold, we assume people are fundamentally decent unless they show us otherwise. However, if it looks like a goose, honks like a goose, and steps like a goose, then it's probably a Nazi, and there's honestly only one kind of person who complains when I say, 'I don't sell books to racists', whatever they are calling themselves right now.
