Salty, may I ask which you recommend more: the one piece manga or anime. I wanna get into it but I also want a recommendation on which one may be better to start with depending on the pros and cons. Anyways I apologies if this is a dumb thing to ask.

Sure! One Piece is a really interesting beast when it comes to the difference between it's anime and manga, and at the end of the day it depends on your preferences- However yes, there are Pros and Cons to each! For this ask, I'll be trying my best to stick to the Official options available to you.

Also, this post specifically will be about how to best GET INTO the series, not necessarily a critique on the content of it! (I'll gladly do a separate write up on that eventually if anyone is interested in my thoughts on the Pros and Cons of the series itself)

Anyway, here are my personal thoughts:

MANGA

(This is my preferred way to experience the story)

PROS

-I'm not a manga purist by any means HOWEVER, the One Piece Manga is really good

-The pacing is really great (especially initially). In the first half, arcs are very quick and snappy! And even as they got progressively longer in length I didn't mind because by that point the story already gripped me.

-The art is wonderful in both black and white, and the official colored scans (which you can find online)

-This isn't really a "pro" per say, but it's something I enjoy doing. When I read, I like to put on some of the soundtrack from the anime. I usually find stuff like "Tense One Piece Music" or "Emotional One Piece Music" and listen to it as I read. It really enhances the experience for me personally. I also like to look up clips of arcs from the anime that I'm reading or already finished to see what they look like, and also see them in a fun new way. I feel like this sort of mixed approach is optimal for me.

CONS

-You have to read 😔

-There are many ways to read One Piece and in many different languages. There's black and white and colored manga- however just be careful. The best one TRANSLATION wise is the official release, and while you may find other options, some older "unofficial" translations are VERY outdated (I once saw one where Zoro casually dropped slurs)

-That also being said: Even though the official translation is the best, it is stuck in black and white. Many official colored scans were never officially licensed in English, and because of that aren't as accessible.

-Collecting it physically is fun, but can get VERY pricey. Like... hoo boy. Thankfully they sell compendiums that collect a metric shit ton of chapters, however the paper/print quality is noticeably cheaper. So if you want to collect them, the smaller volume releases are the way to go. That being said, I would just suggest using the Shonen Jump App by Viz Media. It's the best official way to support the series officially, as well as the cheapest for the average consumer! $3 a month for the entire library as well as other series + getting new chapters updated every week is great. I'm not sponsored or anything either, I just really like the model. So if you find yourself really enjoying the series, THEN you can go about collecting it physically if you want!

ANIME

PROS

-It's animated (obviously)

-You have a choice of either the Japanese Sub or English Dub. This also boils down to preference but from my experience they're both great options!!

-I'll get into it in the "Cons" section, but the One Piece anime is VERY long, like... kind of in a not so good way at certain points. However, I've heard that even though some parts are a bit too long, it's one of those things that if you really get into it, you'll love the fact that it feels like a never ending adventure! Not my experience, but it's what others have told me!

-This is gonna sound crazy, but Filler Arcs. A lot of people don't like these, and I get why, but they are very easily skippable if you want to look up a guide, and some of them can actually be really short and fun (as well as add a bit of extra flavor to the story). One of the best examples is an arc called "G-8". Even Manga readers recommend it, so you know it's good and gives each of the characters some fun moments!

CONS

-You may be aware already, but the One Piece anime has a very bad reputation of having HORRIBLE pacing. Now, to be fair, many people say that the pacing only gets truly horrible AFTER a very specific arc about halfway through the series (which is where a lot of anime watchers jump ship to the manga)

However, I'll be honest... I wasn't a super huge fan of the pacing from the beginning. To clarify, I STARTED with the anime. I don't have a super great attention span, so having to wait around 38 or so episodes for "Arlong Park", the arc that people suggest you get to before deciding whether to keep going or quit, was very difficult for me at first. I got through it, and I'm glad I did, but as soon as I did, I decided to switch over to the manga and had a much easier time.

-I find the show's music very repetitive at times. That's not to say the music is necessarily bad, I love the One Piece OST! It's just... over the years they have barely updated the soundtrack. Every arc you might here one or two new tracks, however a lot of the time you'll hear the same tracks replayed in the same sort of situations. ("OVERTAKEN" is an AMAZING track, but if I hear it one more time I'm gonna snap)

-This is a bit of a nitpick but I need to say it. One Piece's sound effects, while iconic, are also extremely outdated. When you start the series and hear the older-styled Toei Animation sound design, it is super charming because it fits with the older visuals. However in more modern One Piece, which visually looks incredible, THEY STILL USE THE OLD SOUND EFFECTS AND THEY JUST DON'T FIT.

I’ve made a whole post about why I don’t think Mario has any true canon months ago, yet at the same time also pointed out some things where Mario can be surprisingly consistent.

Truth to be told, while I do point to inconsistencies in the games, which are plentiful, the main culprit are Nintendo themselves.

I tend to look at what they say and how they operate to, as best as possible, gauge their intentions with a lot of stuff and a good example of their willingness to play fast and loose and actively alter information is with the Koopalings:

Contrary to what is often quoted, Miyamoto never said they never were Bowser’s kids, but rather that in ‘’their current story’’ Jr is his only child.

Another example of them changing their stance as they see fit to me is how they treated the subject of Mario and Luigi being plumbers.

We have very direct statements of how during the 2010s, people were not allowed to bring up that subject matter in videos:

And even a documented instance of a Japanese bio referring to Mario as having been a plumber a long time ago.

Which, as seen on the screenshot, has obviously been changed since and we got even more recent examples of the movie and one of Wonder’s loading screen trivia bits presenting his occupation proudly. Even at the time 3D World wasn’t shy about it:

Which is one of several times where official statements and in-game content don’t exactly align, heck, it’s weird on a general level given pipes are such a crucial bit of iconography for the franchise, derived by the fact that Mario and Luigi are indeed plumbers.

Stuff like that is why the Toad and Captain Toad thing is a sore spot for me. I never actually denied official sources claiming they are different character, but even despite that kind of explicit statement:

They chose to okay Galaxy supplementary materials that call Toad the Toad Brigade Captain and put him on the cover of Galaxy 2, in the same spot Captain is at in the Starship Mario art no less.

They chose to not have red spots, blue vest Toad in 3D World besides a pre-release Captain Toad life icon, instead having a Blue Toad be playable, which is not how the Toad character is ever represented, to the point where when 3D World art and renders are used to represent him, they are ALWAYS edited to give him the red spots. It’s hard to call it a SMB2 callback, because unlike say, Luigi’s Mansion King Boo or Biker Wario, it’s never even acknowledged or brought back like other game specific designs.

They chose to have a pre-release bonus for Treasure Tracker, an amiibo bundle for it and the function for said amiibo, to be all based around Toad and one of the mission descriptions even just calls him Toad, despite Captain Toad supposedly being a name.

They chose to give Captain in TT Toadette as a partner and include SMB2 elements like turnips and Shy Guys (only red and blue ones like in that game no less) which have no relevance to this supposed separate character, yet are highly tied to Toad.

They chose to have Mario in the Toad costume be called Captain in special Mario Challenge dialogue, in the first Mario Maker.

They chose to show Captain when talking about Toad in an Odyssey developer’s Q&A video.

They chose to have the Toad spirit become Captain Toad in Smash Ultimate, lining up with stuff like Shadow becoming Super Shadow or Alm, Celica and Isaac becoming their adult selves.

They chose to give Captain in Mario Kart Tour most of Toad’s animations, a trait *only* seen with variants and even classify him as a variant internally. Party Time Toad, who is definitively him, has more distinct animations than Captain does.

They chose to give Toad a treasure hunting themed expansion set and even call him a treasure hunter in LEGO Mario, an ongoing merch-line with an extremely big name.

They chose to continue the 3D World thing with Wonder, keeping Toad off the roster when Captain is around, while Mario vs DK has him playable no problem.

They chose to let the movie, Mario’s biggest non-gaming outing to date, very explicitly treat Toad and Captain as the same character and even give out pamphlets explaining references in the movie in Japan. Said pamphlet calls Treasure Tracker Toad’s game, making no mention of Captain as a separate character.

They chose to make a big promo video promoting Mario games tied to certain characters and have Toad tied to Treasure Tracker. This video was also put on the Nintendo Switch news tab, mentioning Captain by name in the description, yet showing Toad and it has its own spot on the Nintendo website too. Additionally they list Treasure Tracker in Toad’s list of appearances on Play Nintendo.

In isolation I wouldn’t think much of any of these, but when it happens so often I do start to wonder what the idea is. They are shooting every opportunity to establish Captain as his own character, especially for normies who likely just saw him and assumed he was Toad anyways, in the foot. 

I tend to refer to the movie a lot when trying to cite Nintendo’s seeming attitude towards some things too and yeah, I do still think it’s a big deal the New York backstory is back. It clashes with the Yoshi’s Island backstory, which is also supported by Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, but THAT backstory in turn clashes with the pre-SMB games and bios as late as 1994, that referred to Mario as italian, Foreman Spike as american and Pauline as being from New York, still establishing the old backstory as relevant enough to be brought up in character guides.

They are questionably compatible, but that’s because they are from very different eras of Mario. The Yoshi’s Island one will likely persist as the more commonly referred to one, because it mixes better with Mario’s SMB onwards world, but the old backstory is still accepted enough by Nintendo to allow it in a monster hit movie.

And that’s the thing, the movie takes liberties, but still holds true to a vision Nintendo themselves want to have out there, for Mario and his world. They know many people will be exposed to Mario for the first time in a while or possibly ever, through the movie and okayed for it as a way to interpret the franchise, that is a big deal.

Is the movie ‘’canon’’ to the games? We don’t know, Mario doesn’t have an officially recognized canon ala’ Hyrule Hystoria. It may not be canon in the sense of having happened in the game universe 1:1, but it is canon as a Nintendo approved, modern, big interpretation of Mario.

And the thing is, regardless if it’s canon or not, it’s influence can already be felt.

The Peach Showtime cover art has been updated in a way that makes Peach resemble her movie design a bit more, Wonder’s animation upgrade was directly motivated by living up to the movie’s standards of how people expect the characters to move and animate and then you got this:

A video on Nintendo’s official Youtube accounts, a Switch news tab article and even it’s own page on their website. A remarkably pushed marketing pull for games conveniently only highlighting characters in the movie and the game selection is clearly inspired by that too. Smash for DK to replicate his fight with Mario, Toad explicitly being called Captain, Mario Kart for Peach because that section was a prominent marketing scene for her, etc.

Nintendo’s biggest concern is how they want the brand to be presented, more than any canon. I’ll call out inconsistencies when I see them, but in general, this is what I pay attention to the most and why I am very accepting of the fact Mario is always bound to face changes, bigger and smaller, that may at times even be departures from what came before.

I really love Julieta, but not just because she’s caring and well….just an amazing person, but also because even she herself is a flawed person, and I think it’s perfectly represented in the kitchen scene.

I myself have said that I really like flawed characters who are good people at the same time, because it really makes you feel more for the character, they feel real, and part of the fun is understanding where they’re coming from. In the kitchen scene, she confronts Mirabel about the crack situation. Once Mirabel shows that she thinks she doesn’t believe her and says she would never ruin Antonio’s special night, Julieta responds with “I think tonight was hard for you”. It’s clear to the viewer that Julieta obviously doesn’t believe Mirabel regarding the cracks, nor really hears her out, but I just love that regardless, she tries to shower her daughter with love and appreciation. You see Mirabel clearly frustrated because her mother isn’t listening to her, even though what Julieta is doing is that….well you clearly see she’s a character who tries her best at all times, and that’s what I appreciate about her. Throughout the movie you see her worry and try to help Mirabel, saying she has nothing to prove, saying she’s special the way she is, telling Abuela to be easy on her, so Julieta to me, came off as one of those mothers who loves their child very much and tries to shower them with love, doing everything in their power to give them support and appreciation, even though at the same time, they can’t really understand just exactly what their child is going through, and they can’t really see through their eyes. She reminds me of a parent who tries their best to help, but in some situations isn’t really, even though you can tell they’re trying and that they love the other very much, and this is a GOOD thing. I love layered and complex characters so much, and it’s especially emotional to think about Julieta’s point of view.

In the official Encanto Art book (and yes I own one hehe), in the words of director Jared Bush himself, regarding Julieta, he states:

“She really tries, and her kids are her number one priority. She is the most empathetic member of the family, and while she is still imperfect, she tries her best to defend her daughter.”

Like I said, it’s one of the things you can appreciate about her. She really loves her daughters, and the fact that she’s trying her best despite being imperfect herself, is a really good thing. 🥺😭💕

Finally, I think the most important thing worth mentioning about Julieta is that in the official behind the scenes Encanto featurette titled “Familia Lo Es Todo”, an animator by the name of “Jorge E. Ruiz Cano”, had this to say about her:

“I know many Julieta’s, she’s trying to recognize Abuela’s traditions, but also validate and see the next generation coming in. She wants to please Abuela, she understand Abuela. She wants to please Mirabel, she understands Mirabel, and she loves them both. It’s beautiful to see the interaction of three generations!”

I absolutely love this fact about her. You have her loving her mother truly despite her mother being a heavily flawed person, and while Julieta is part of the members who stick to Abuela’s expectations and follow her traditions, she also has three daughters to love and care for, so she’s sort of trying to make sure the next generation knows they’re being seen, and that she’s just…giving them the comfort that she thinks they all need. She feels like a real person you’d meet in real life, not just simple and shallow, but deep, emotional, and complex herself, and that’s what I love about her. We stan a healing mother! 🥣🫓💙

I have a wip of it. It would be TSSM related since I know that one more. Also, i don’t like looking at spiders, but I'm trying. This is basically a self insert rn with university as an animator who loves different types of media, I will stop mid fight to have a deep conversation with Mysterio and I think it would be really funny if he accidentally help out civilian me. Phineas would have a granddaughter, Phin (PS4 game) thats in the same classes as me (invites me to her house as I scream inside, also Tinkerer and Tinker) Osborn telling the art major (me) what art is supposed to be. (Later becomes unwell after becoming goblin) Accidentally volunteering on painting a mural for Tomby's building (me having bad luck seeing every villain as a civilian). Some who figure out im in school, "Don't you have homework to do?"Well, i would do it, IF YOU WEREN'TROBBING THE BANK RN!" Conners are just trying their best, but someone keep sabotaging their lab on purpose. I would have natural webs (not smart enough to make gadgets, but I would have someone make stuff for me), colored smoke bombs for surprise, and gloves with claws (to hide real nails) but I'm not sure on the rollerblades though. Also, the aesthetic would be blues, purple, black, and yellow. If I don't base on my design after a spider, I'm doing something like the Night Spider maybe. I'm still working on stuff but hopes this is fine!

And don't worry about the spiders thing, I also can't stand looking at spiders. not unless they're very obviously fake and cartoony looking. sdkjhsdfkj it's the only way for me.

If you like Pokemon, I've seen at least 2 different spidersonas with a Pokemon design theme/motif (Joltik & Pikachu), so that could be a fun alternative!

or, if you have friends who don't mind looking at spiders, they could help you out with finding some inspiration!

I might not like looking at spiders, but I do know of a few that are pretty interesting. The Bunny Harvestman (not actually a spider! still an arachnid tho) and the Mirror Spider just to name 2! Although, the don't have those aesthetic colors you listed. there IS a blue tarantula tho, "Gooty Sapphire" as it's called I believe??

However, you don't need to base it off a preexisting spider! it can be designed and styled similar to one of the official spiderpeople's suits and given adjustments and changes to fit what you think looks cool! I mean. some people go with a jester or clown theme. some people have even done gummy candy spiders, etc etc. there's LOADS of room for creativity!

GOU IS LITERALLY BEST GIRL OF THE SHOW I always say it, but the show itself would not have been possible without her WE OWE EVERYTHING TO GOU, shes also such a caring sister and a funny character (plus shes so so pretty), However, obviously my soul hurts every time I remember how little we really have of her on screen and how left out she is that she doesn't even appear in most of the official art of the anime (I know why she doesn't, but STILL , GOSHHHH) everything she says about what she plans to do in the future at TFS also makes me very very sad, my girl's potential, the dreams she could have had and found with a deeper character arc (or rather a character arc at all) like, PLS KYOANI JUST GIVE ME GOU CONTENT IN WHICH I TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN MUSCLES (even tho thats part of why shes so cool) Gou Is such a precious being and i need more content of her ,

OK OK OK, the feelings that Ikuya awakens in me are complex, on the one hand I love many scenes and things that we can explore with his character and on the other I am fed up with how emo he acts in DTF (like, his attitude makes sense but it doesn't seem completely justified to me, I don't know, I've always felt it strange)

The poor boy has been abandoned and has a little mermaid complex, I really, really love his relationship with Asahi and I don't like the supposed friendship that happens between him and Toono at all, i find the the scene in the pool with the shooting stars so beautiful and charming as much as I find it a little unnecessary, I find myself thinking about him constantly and I love jamming to "Never Alone" (his character song) and at the same time I hardly watch DTF because of the entire arc that includes it (half of the series). Ikuya, I think, is a hate/love blorbo aksjk

Heyy I’m new to the tf2 fandom and was wondering where you get your content? Obviously there’s the game and the official animations, but is there any other big source? I’ve heard of the comics but haven’t read them, I don’t know anything other than that lol

Finally got around to this anon ask lol.

For general art and such? I hang around here on Tumblr. Twitter too, but mainly Tumblr. I'm always terrible with remembering artists off the top of my head though.. You just go through the TF2 tag and follow whichever one you'd like :] Same thing said with TF2 fics. Despite writing like. 200k words, I don't read a ton of fics. I get too upset too quickly when the characters aren't exactly like how I write them.

The comics are great! You can find them on the official TF2 website. No need to buy anything, as they're available on the comic section. They're actually supposed to be read on that website lol. They're very silly and fun and I recommend them a lot, especially when it comes to learning the more "lore" characters like Saxton Hale, the Administrator and Pauling, Gray Mann, and so on and so forth.

Videos and such? I like watching SFM animations and YouTubers. Some that jump out at me in particular are

Uncle Dane (Engineer tips and gameplay)

Lazy Purple (synopsis of the classes with gameplay and general tips and such)

ShorK (TF2 goofs and memes with the occasional very high-quality stuff as he works kinda with the voice actors of the mercs)

Quazies (fan animations)(both Godzilla and TF2 with the Lil' Pootis shorts),

Elmaxo (TF2 challenges like getting 1000 kills on the sniper rifle and zero headshots kills)

Eltorro64Rus (weird Gmod animations with goofy and silly nonsensical stuff)

Bumbles McFumbles (mostly non-TF2 BUT he has done two videos about the mercs and which one is the biggest war criminal and well as which ones make for the best boyfriend)

ColonelFazipantzen (very pretty SFM animations and memes)

The Winglet (SFM animator who goes high-quality and goofy videos)

Fortress Films (Spy's Disguise and Emesis Blue, two SFM movies that are pretty different and tone [especially with Emesis Blue] and I generally wouldn't exactly recommend as your first exposure to TF2 since Emesis Blue in particular is a serious psychological horror flick)

All you need to know is that official Valve-made stuff is canon. The comics, official SFMs, blog posts, all that. Most of the stuff you find on YouTube or here isn't canon unless it's a repeat of what's shown in canon. Blah blah blah, all that.

re-listening to "Samurai Rabbit with Stan Sakai & The Usagi Chronicles Creative Team"

This week I have been re-listening to one of the longer interviews with Stan Sakai, Khang Le and Candie and Doug Langdale and I found a youtube version of it with official subtitles!! I can finally understand what some of the parts actually were about compared to before x3

I've posted links to that and other interviews before, but this is one of the most extensive ones imo, so I thought it would be nice to post the link that here separately.

One thing I see the collective fandom voice out is how they don't like that it's about a young rabbit and not a direct adaptation (it wasn't up to the crew, they were brought on after the decision) and this interview actually gives answer to that and many other questions I've seen fans talk about publicly both on here and on twitter. (Like why there aren't phones or screens for example.) There's a nice intro about this aspect as well, how two fans of the og comic feel about this show when about to interview the author himself and how the main creative leads are also big nerds about the Usagi Yojimbo comicbook series. Stan Sakai and Khang Le mainly talk about the art and adaptation, as well as story of the show, while Candie and Doug talk about the creative writing parts of the show. They even talk about the music a bit! Reccomended listening if you like the show! This was also recorded before the final 10 episodes aired so it's fun hearing them tease the 2nd season again.

What's nice is that the interviewers themselves (the Comicbook Couples Counseling podcast), are fans of Usagi Yojimbo as well so they are very well-versed in the comic series, so the questions they ask are also very relevant... but also respectful to both the creators and the comic and cartoon! So it's a nice interview to listen to, from a very creative and mature perspective imo.

Seeing fans from different sides of both the TMNT and Usagi fandoms voice different opinions based on assumptions of the show has been a bit frustrating to see (maybe much less so if I only look at fanart, but it's been both "older" and younger fans), so this has been refreshing to re-listen to because it really only looks at the show from creative and collaborative viewpoints vs what people seem to assume that Netflix shows are all about - money and profit and keeping up only some sort of live-wire.

I personally really think the show probably could have had a bigger "impact" with the story if it took some bigger risks, but at the same time, they did their best with what they were given in terms of budget, which I'm remembering again after listening to the creative ways they had to avoid some shots or how some storylines got cut. It's a very creative and easy-going show to me, even if it's not "the best" in terms of what people have come to expect from cartoon shows for kids now.

It's also really interesting to listen to the interview again with subtitles and getting some of the context better (like how the makkine and spaceships, there was a certain inspiration they we're looking at outside of comics - "Robot Carnival" - an animated film I was only vaguely aware of before).

I also found the artist who did the layouts and special poses for the 2D sequences, which was so cool to find! I'm so glad that the Samurai Rabbit crew and artists have been proud to post their work on the series so far as I found a few artists' portfolios/galleries and blogs last month as well. Not gonna repost those (that's obviously just rude without permission and no one wants to get in trouble for that) but it would be cool to share links to those too if people were interested x3

Notes:

-Well… this took a long time to finish, especially in drawing Monsterkind’s home on the surface… Obviously some of the layout and buildings is ripped straight from Deltarune’s light world.

-There are a lot of cameos from both Undertale and Deltarune. I replicated some of the UT/DR sprites in the art by copying their original sprites ripped at Spriters Resource. Some of the background characters may have been modified from their original sprites. Same for some of the buildings.

-I like to think that monsters are able to bring some of the structures in the underground onto the surface. Probably able to do so with magic.

-The panel where Asriel and Chara are running towards Toriel’s home is actually from the Undertale Art Book. -As you can see, the unknown Holiday mother is queen of Monsterkind. Except we don't know what she really looks like officially by the time of this writing so I took my best guess on her appearance if she were a queen. -Yes I know, Post Timeskip Frisk looks like that Gregory kid from the FNAF Security Breach game. That was unintentional when I designed my older version of Frisk at the time.

-Flowey's "leaf legs" are inspired by the sunflowers from the Plants vs Zombies games.

-EDIT: Changed the Royal Guard duo to match their canon colors as seen in Deltarune. Apparently the Tarrot Card colors I initially gave em were the wrong ones. I also changed the uniforms of the guards because I felt that having them around in knight armor looks out of place in a modern setting.  These uniforms I designed before I got into undertale but I remember taking inspiration from the flak jackets of the Naruto anime. -EDIT 2: Removed the mechs in favor of robot ducks like the one you could potentially make in Deltarune Chapter 1. I do plan to reintroduce proper mechs at a later point in the story.

If you’ve been following this comic for a while, I want to thank you for sticking around to the very end. Its been quite the challenge for me making a full fledged Undertale comic, especially since I don’t consider myself to be a very good artist. As for what’s next? I intend for this comic to be the launch of this AU. I have plans for the 1st chapter…but we’ll see if this AU goes anywhere or not…

Yumi Ankhkemet, Meryamun's werewolf wife for nearly 6 centuries, a relationship that totally defies the norms between vampires and werewolves. She is chill and sweet, she just has a resting bitch face. Wow it took me so long to write her bio and post it here it's not even funny

Unlike her husband, her past was not very glorious. Yumi was born in Kyoto in the early 13th century in the streets and was raised until age 5 by her prostitute mother who had done her best to feed and protect her until she died of tuberculosis, a memory that deeply scarred her. She only had herself from this moment and had to survive in that hostile environment from guards, animals, creeps and the cold winters by stealing and sneaking in. Which toughened up and to this day earn you a cold stare until she warms up to you. Aroung age 14, now that she had become pretty with a "woman" body, she entered a brothel in which she would be at least fed and shielded from the cold, even if it meant sleeping with disgusting older men which only intensified her bitch resting face she already had before. At least she knew about plants from her years of survival and observing others harvesting them, and so brewed herself a lot of abortive potions and healing teas. And the brothel being kind of fancy for upper class men, she got to learn to read, write, use good manners and play music. So much she was often joked as being destined to become a geiko. Which she would have loved, actually... for she realized she actually really loved this comfortable artistic lifestyle and wouldn't mind having it minus the gross sex. But of course it was just an impossible dream, so she hid her sorrow behind alluring smiles, fake laughters at dumb jokes from patrons and painting calligraphy during her breaks. But she did keep her grip on her hopes, praying at the Shintoist shrine for spirits and her mother whenever she could

One day, when Yumi was 20, a particularly important patron came in the brothel. The local lord himself, with a bunch of samurai bodyguards. Never a richer patron had come before since Yumi had arrived. In her head, an idea bloomed. It was her chance for a better life, a life to live in luxuries and read and write as much as she wanted while drinking tea and listening to or playing music ! He was married sure, but he was there so he was obviously not the faithful type. Using all her charms and her alluring skills words, determined her chances Yumi seduced the man in age to be her grandfather pretending to agree with his laws and like his flatteries, flattering and fakely admiring him, discussing art and literature together, showing great genuine interest in some jewelry and items he possessed, and did her best to give him the best sex he ever had in his life ; sadly not mutual, but it would be an investment worth it of course and she had learned to be good at simulating to satisfy egos. So much he came back several times exclusively for her. Then started to bring her precious gifts. And in the end after a good while ended up buying her from her pimp and bringing her home as his number one courtesan. Finally, she went from several disgusting old men to one and that one at least respected boundaries more and would maker her life much more comfortable ! Who knows, even if it were for rich upper women she could even manage to become a maiko then a geiko, at last !

But she had forgotten one very, VERY important detail : he was married. And his wife was obviously not happy of this humiliation of sharing the same roof with the "whore" your husband fucks behind your back. But in her entitlement, Yumi was not aware of another very important element : the wife was actually from a richer, higher background than her husband who had just gotten lucky to marry into nobility. And wives in Japan were and still are the ones in charge of money management. So even if officially he was the head of the house, the lady actually held him by the balls for every decision he took. So of course when she shared her rage over this affair with her husband and gave him a financial ultimatium, of course he stopped to think with his lust but with his greed. Playing the sad boot licking puppy, he promised her to get rid of his sugar baby, and ordered his samurai to get her and throw her in the nearby forest that held the reputation to be full of wolves. Yumi screamed, cried, struggled, prayed, begged him to spare her, but he did not even look at her and turned his back on her getting back home nonchalantly with his wife as sad as someone who broke their sex toy and had to throw it away

Taken away by her hair, Yumi was thrown inside the forest at twilight and tied to a tree, let alone there with her fear and calls for help. She was alone... until a big wolf came, a wolf like she had never seen any, muscular and bipedal. A monster ?! A yôkai ?! Whatever it was it latched at her and savagely bit her on the back-hip area and clawed her other places, making her scream in pain and fear... but thr beast fell back on the ground, dead, before having been able to hurt her any further. A hunter had heard her calls for help in the distance and had rushed in as fast as he could and just needed to shoot a single arrow in the back of its neck. Yumi was still trembling in fear, in shock, from seeing all her efforts for a better life and her dream job destroyed, her ego shattered into being just a disposable whore again, and of course the pain the dying adrenaline was letting its place to and the fact she had seen all her life flash before her eyes. The hunter fortunately was a good man who untied her and kept questionning her if she was ok and how did she even end up there all so she would stay awake until carrying her to his home to heal her, questions she was too shocked to answer. Whatever, he disinfected her sounds with saké (all he had right now ; HURT LIKE HELL) and bandaged her the best she could. What a good man... she finally spoke to thank him and let him lie her down on his bed while he would cook her something, agreeing to him when he ordered her to rest and not move. Well... maybe that would be a new life or the start of a new one...

Little did she know, it was indeed so but a way she did not imagine. Indeed, the full moon rose... and she started to feel intense pain again. Wriggled, growled... hair grew, so did her bones and muscles, her clothes tore under her new mass... she turned into the beast that had attacked her. Before she would fathom what the hell had happened, the hunter entered the room and dropped the food in shock, and rushed for his weapon to kill "it" not realizing it was her, but with her newfound strength Yumi could rip the window open and ran away in the night, instinctively on all 4 to be faster. She had become a werewolf. The early times, she hates herself and this situation, regretting, crying, lamenting over this curse which forced her to turn into this every full moon and even in between caused her to have all her senses wilder, grow more hair and be more aggressive woth a strength she did not control. She even had to leave Japan for hunters kept being on her track and ended up in Korea. But there, she came across a pack of other werewolves. Their alpha was hostile and tried to chase her away, but she was so hungry, had gone through so much anger from her abandonned dreams and het betrayal abd had learned to hunt and fught bigger and bigger preys in the meantime to survive she beat him up, barely noticing him and just the food he had. She didn't expect this to earn her respect and become the new alpha, but this was welcome ! And thus Yumi discovered a new side of her : she could be a leader, and she was stronger than she imagined, more so as she exercised. She learned more about her condition and learned to love it, work in group instead of alone, was no longer a prostitute at all anymore, and even had enough security (even if they had to move frequently not to rise suspicions) to learn Korean and read and write more. But she still was not very satisfied. She needed to fulfill her needs. So she went from pack to pack, from country to country on all Eurasia, to feel alive by challenging and defeating alphas and become stronger and more known and respected among the international werewolf community all while learning more languages and cultures, learning more about plants to brew or just chew tge way they are, finding out other paranormal species existed in secret across the world, master more and more her passions of reading and writing and mastering more and more werewolf skills and making herself stronger (not very visible, she is naturally thin, but she IS toned). To the point she even learned to transform at will anytime and even unlocked her ability to become immortal around her 50's, a skill rare and precious only the best alphas aquire. The only problem was her unsatisfaction towards how her hair grew back too much and how she still didn't live a comfortable life of running away too much with no stable living place. She did make friends in every pack, but being now immortal she didn't dare getting too much attached, besides she just couldn't fill that void by only staying with one pack but didn't know better to do

This was when she met who would be her future husband, Lord Meryamun Ankhkemet, early 15th century in England one night she had gotten a bit far from her pack to breathe, atop a hill at night under her human form. I had already told most of it in the post about him so refer to it for what is lacking, but here is what I can complete. She was rightfully pissed that vampire, a species she had met before and learned to hate for being parasite scavengers, had dared attacking her, and she would have ordered her pack to rip him to pieces if it were not for his correct points : they were homeless and on the run, he had a home but needed an aliby. They needed to coexist in that county to survive. Details, details I said already in the other post... no matter how many times he "flirtatiously" enraged her to be beaten up, and how annoying he was, and how her betrayal had caused her to particularly love tearing nobles apart which he was, she did grow respect for his skills and intelligence, did find him quite handsome and elegant with charisma that flustered her, and force of working together, hunting together, speaking, defending each other, learning more about each other and their origins and sharing their interests (art, music and literature !? FINALLY someone who got it !), they ended up bonding. Bond that turned into lust, lust that turned into love. First too prideful to admit it, then one day her heat came aaaand they couldn't deny it anymore. Now the problem was they needed to part ways when he and her pack started to be suspicious to locals in these old ruins they resided. Initially they bid each other farewell... until an epiphany. He was immortal like her, he was handsome and fun, he cooked like a god (and her hunger having multiplied ever since she became a werewolf it was more than welcome), he liked a lot of things she did and was willing to share his knowledge with her who just yearned for more, he could afford luxuries even if he needed to move like her, he was great at sex, he was strong, she felt safe with him, she missed him when he was not around... of fuck she LOVED him he was the perfect match she couldn't just let him go ! So she quickly named her beta the new alpha, bid farewell to her werewolf friends and ran back to Meryamun much to his joy, and since then travelled the world together, their bond only intensifying always stronger than ever, without forgetting her roots and often visitting Japan and praying shintoism

They married late 15th century, hunted together, defied the norms of their species by being openly together but too feared and strong to be contested. Not only did Lady Ankhekemet (even if they needed to move) finally could live the grand life with him treating her, she actually DID love him as much as he loved her and she felt alive to feel as such. For once a man treated her as more than a sex object and less formarly than a feared alpha, but like herself, the last person having done so had been her mother. And he didn't just have her be a sugar baby, no no. He valued her intelligence so much he showed how to invest and had her become his equal in terms of business with shared accounts (especially back in a day only the guy had one back then). She was now actively working for herself with him, and that made her feel even more valued and less like her previous lifestyle. And now thanks to them moving around, she opened her knowledge to many more cultures and languages she learned which gave her more content to read and write, that is until they finally found a vampire village in what would become USA in 17th century in which they finally built their family mansion and have been residing in for 4 centuries now

Like I had said on Meryamun's post, the village became an unsuspected isolated district they could hide in, and Meryamun became a famous chef in his own restaurant. Even if she does not have an official job, Yumi is known for having written many brilliant theses on medieval Japan and art, successful books and novels which earned her prizes and rewards and other written works such as translations, corrections, scripts, reviews and critics whenever she felt like it. She might have never gotten to be a maiko, she still got to achieve her 2nd dream, writing, and have success for writing about her first dream. But she also helps her husband's restaurant business (economically and critically and HAPPILY serving as tester gor his new dishe) as well as financing and investing various projects just like he does... and just like he, most of them are shady. For having spent almost all her pre-Meryamun life having to survive and being alone then onxe a werewolf having to kill or fight to live and be respected did leave a toll on her morality. Less charismatic than her husband, she is openly cold and dismissing, not wanting to pretend emotions again like she had to do as a prostitute. So not even being a human anymore has her, just like her husband, see the human citizens as cattle they just have to pretend to be philantropists to so that her children will be safe and never have to go through whatever she went through

For indeed, in the 2000's they finally felt comfortable and safe enough to have children, but given how the first was a vampire which almost killed her on labor, and just were lucky the second was just a werewolf like her which she could handle, they never dared having a third for her safety. And they and Lord Ankhkemet are some of the only people she is openly sweet and smiley too, she loves her babies and happily teaches her son the ways of being a werewolf while still supporting her vampire daughter and supporting both of them for being trans as much as it did surprise her. She also made friends shr dhowd her sweet side to, common with her husband as well as some of her own such as an old Japanese grandma she met at a Japanese sauna she found very wise and another werewolf, nerdy and awkward but still fierce and whom she suspects to be crushing on her which amuses her ego. That said, if she knows you, aside from these people, she will just have a resting bitch face but stil one friendly and cordial until she learns to know you better, she rarely hunts down people for food anymore and she is emotionally detached from the ones affected from her side business she doesn't see, like Meryamun to his, because she doesn't think much of it. She is also very protective and killed for her family, and adores her husband as much as the first day, both of them being like Morticia and Gomez mixed in with Pandora and the Captain to each other and having a sex life still very active after 600 years of knowing each other, which mortifies the other residents of the mansion (the FIRST man she met who actually makes sure she is satisfied too, he is a gem ! Hmm thoughts about anime culture and porn addiction.

Im facing some reality checks lately and yeah, Ive really developed a distaste for loli culture that Im going to have to distance myself from lists of characters I used to like. It's plainly hard to harbor affection for characters that are, ultimately and unfortunately, being directly designed to appeal to pedophiles -- even if my interests are innocent enough, if its an aesthetic appreciation of the character or whatever, there really is a line where I have to be an adult and admit that Im turning a blind-eye towards a very gross culture.

Recently one of those wake-up calls was the newest Koume content on Idolmaster, which features her as a bride. I wish my disappointment could be felt through the internet because I really did sigh sooooo hard lol. Just... what whiplash, the excitement of realizing a favorite character is getting new official art and content or whatever, only to quickly see that it's depicting them as some sort of child-bride. It grossed me out, but even grosser honestly is seeing everyone else just... uncritically admire the art. The same way I probably would have a few years ago.

It's really gotten me to wonder a lot about the anime community, just how deep this goes. I think there's a culture in anime that's very proud about deviancy, and not entirely unlike how you see deviancy be embraced in other adult sectors -- like LGBT+ communities and furry communities. For many people, it appears to be an outlet to "let go" of normal social restraints and immerse oneself into fantasies that are otherwise repressed. And these fantasies range far and wide, not just fetishes or wanting to fuck monster girls, but also nostalgia, which is very powerful with the anime community. So much anime appeals to the nostalgia of being young again, but this time, being important and wiser, or asking the girl out, or having sexual romps that you thought everyone else was enjoying in high school -- an entire genre is dedicated to people, often "losers", dying in the real world and being reincarnated in a fantasy world full of hot women. In the anime community, there's so much interest over even the most mundane interactions, no stone left unturned to sexualize. Cleaning a classroom? Make it sexy. Reading a book? Make it sexy. Clocking into work? Make it sexy. And I understand why people are drawn to this appeal, when so many people within the community feel sexually repressed, unloved, they feel like they've already "missed out" on their best years, they "missed out" on the chances to have crazy harems and make outrageous friends-with-benefits.

... It's porn addiction. It's a culture of porn addiction. And within anime, it has seeped into everything. And so with that considered, it's very difficult to continue even indirectly supporting the most blatant pedo behavior. Like, lol, who can convince me that the child-bride Koume was developed with innocent intent? How can anyone tell me with a straight face that the implication is anything but the fantasy of marrying a 13 year-old? I havent read any of the related dialogue, but I cant help but guess that it only confirms my point, that the appeal is obviously directed to tickle the kind of people who would be okay marrying a middle schooler.

I've had my ups and downs with justifying this kind of stuff with underage characters. I tried squinting and telling myself theyre older, or that whatever Im looking at is fine because I appreciate the aesthetics, not any childlike aspect of the character, or I try to over look the more blatantly nsfw art even though theres plenty of sfw art with implications just as bad. But Ive got to be honest with myself in admitting that this isnt who I am, this isnt what I want to be supporting.

And it sucks, I guess, and it also sounds stupid that I'm "moving away" "from anime" but it really is so simple: there's no way I can trust anime or its extended mediums to not be benefiting pedophiles whenever it has the chance. It's why I can't be assed to even consider watching something like that spy anime, because god knows that pink-haired toddler is getting peoples rocks off -- not just fans, but certainly also the official artists and animators, any storyboard directors, I cant trust any one of them to not have sick intentions behind their handling of a child character, not when its developed in a culture that is unabashedly favorable towards sexualizing children. They dont have to draw anything explicit, it can just be the way they pose her for a scene, or a dialogue bit they make her say, or a dream sequence they insert a fetish into. Like, Im so sick of this lol. Im tired of wading through anime and thinking "oh, well, this scene is definitely written for the porn addicts, I just have to sit through it."

I'm left looking at the SJW-side of anime enjoyers and wondering where theyre going to draw the same line, though. I cant help but think of how widespread this culture is, and how contradictory people can be. Some folks will obviously be disgusted by loli porn, but then happily participate in shota content... Some people will blast your ass for reblogging sexy art of a 17 year-old, but then have their own 16 year-old blorbo that they do fetish RPs with... Some folks would never, ever sexualize a 15 year-old from a Disney cartoon, but are more than fine with 13 year-olds from anime being drawn in bikinis. There's so little consistency, it has always felt like a free-for-all with this discourse. I truly was burned by the fact that so many SJW-types were a-okay with Dragon Maid and its depiction of toddlers engaging in blatant fanservice, so much applause for a cartoon created by an unabashed lolicon just because it had some gay characters -- that told me everything lol, it told me the truth, that pedophilia can just be considered acceptable by anyone, at any point within the community, so long as its to that individual's tastes.

There really does need to be an EXACT discussion about this part of anime culture, but no one wants to engage with it, because virtually everyone would be guilty of having been enamored with an underage character at one point or another. Think of all the porn made of pokemon characters that are implied to be 10-13 years-old canonically, think of all the high school anime characters that rarely go to high school in the first place, think of all the legacy characters from any given person's childhood that they might think is fine to sexualize because it's been 20-30 years. There's so many points and arguments to make, but it truly is a discussion that will just never happen and never be resolved, because ultimately, deviancy is one of the biggest appeals to the anime community -- its a pillar of what "anime culture" is, its why ecchi and hentai are intrinsically linked to most anime spaces, its absolutely a major reason why anime is so popular as it is. To call out deviancy and its implications within the anime community is to prod at one of its base appeals, one of the very core reasons people are into anime to begin with.

I feel like any debate about this topic eventually hits this wall: "why are you trying to take away someone's fun? why are you trying to make something gross?" Thats the strongest virtue of the community. "Just dont take it so seriously" "dont worry about what other people are doing" For so, so many people, it feels like the "point" of anime is to fantasize about all the things youre not supposed to do irl. And I guess Im at a point where I cant keep buying into that lol. I think for many people, their critical awareness has been almost completely dulled down by an addiction to deviant porn that's made them numb to creepy behaviors. Add in a dose of irony poisoning and you have people who openly jerk off to incest loli/shota porn, but tell themselves theyre not ACTUALLY into pedophillic incest because uhh its just anime lol and apparently not at all a reflection of any true self or interests. A culture of porn addiction and unaccountability -- do you see why I just dont want to be so associated with that kind of people?

Btw wanna know something stupid? I think my depression like officially broke me around the time Frozen came out/was successful

Like by that point I was generally depressed at things not going very well for me and hitting a lot of walls, but Frozen’s success despite being such a terrible movie in every respect (except music, for the most part, though only as single songs, not as a coherent collection at all) just strangled me. I couldn’t fathom something so obviously bad being such a grand hit. It made me really feel that whole ‘the world is unjust’ thing just in the art sense. Nobody seemed to care what a good story was, what good art was, just milking a product for money

Around the same time, I got to hear a lot of animators (and other artists) give talks at my college about how they devoted their life to their craft and there was no time for anything else. You must be convicted and determined to put in SO much work and bury yourself in it. They usually said this with pride

So

1. It hit me very hard that even if something is poignant and well made, it can get cast aside to something chopped together with no message 2. It hit me that the work I wanted to go into couldn’t allow anyone but the very best and very dedicated to survive

pokemon scarlet/violet spoiler stuff from the new teaser

OKAY so. big stuff today, obviously. so. i will share my Thoughts…

1. i’m already liking scarlet better than violet. i hate to say it because. blue is my favorite color and violet is closer to blue and i don’t really care for warm colors all that much usually but KABFKAJ. just. i think the professor is hotter and that’s really my biggest reason for being on team scarlet for right now. and the futuristic aesthetic for violet’s prof. isn’t really working for me. i like both of the trainer uniforms though so. who knows…

2. the legendaries. i honestly think miraidon (violet) is really cool looking- great colors and Very Sleek and!!! i’m really digging it. i don’t typically take legendaries into account because i never use them on my team because it feels too “cheap” but. i really like miraidon a lot. koraidon (scarlet) is also very cool, but. idk. there’s something about it that’s making me really like miraidon a lot more. probably the colors but also the aesthetic. prof. turo’s (violet) futuristic aesthetic is that really bland kind so his fashion and how Neat everything is is like. off putting. but miraidon’s future thing works significantly better, imo. (his in-game model is hotter than his official art though <3)

3. the pokemon. i LOVE them so far. ofc they only showed 3 new ones but. i really like them. smoliv gives me. gen 2/3 vibes, honestly. i’m not sure why. maybe it’s the sunkern eyes? but still. she has tiny peets and i love her already. and! pawmi! it doesn’t look like a real pokemon but! i’m digging it! i think it’s cute. a generic route 1 rodent, maybe, but i think it’s very sweet looking. a Handsome Young Man. and lechonk. ohoho, lechonk…. i already love him. absolutely. by far THE pokemon of all time. i wanna throw him around. i wanna dribble him like a basketball. and i love him. he’s literally perfect. is he just a pig? maybe so. but he’s also… A Little Guy… 🥺💖

4. THE STARTERS. honestly. i’m really disappointed so far. quaxly was kinda my least favorite of the trio before this just by official art but its model absolutely looks the best so far. fuecoco was my favorite because of how doofy and cute he looks- but his model right now very much doesn’t do him justice, i think. i’m not a 3D modeler or animator or anything, so i’m not sure 100% what it is, but it feels Off. same with sprigatito. i think it’s probably because the models are lineless instead of having black outlines like in official art, but still. i hope they either fix it or! that i get used to it! because it very well may be jarring just because i’m not used to it yet.

either way- i think the games look SUPER amazing already. i’m being a bit lenient because they still have months of development time to fix things, and i wouldn’t like it in its current state ofc, but i think it looks really nice so far and! i’m excited. the graphics are SUPER detailed in a lot of places and i think that’s fucking crazy!!! and if they make the whole game look that great then!!! 🥺🥺🥺🥺 IDK!!!!!!!!! okay that’s all bye (:

So, I was getting back into my SWSH hyperfixtation today and went to the official website to get inspo for some art stuff. And I see sonia’s new outfit for masters EX. And it made me wonder, does this indicate that tsareena was a part of her Pokémon team?

Idk ; i know there is little to no chance we’ll ever canonically see her entire team unless it’s mentioned in the anime or the manga but it still makes me wonder. Why would they maker a rival to Leon when she has no clear team in the story? Did something happen? Or is it just a plot hole? Anyway, it’s fun to toy around with the idea. her new outfit looks great tho and well designed. :000

Hi there @kitsuna21! Yes, I did see that, and I did a little cheer. Sonia looks so great in that outfit, and it's great that she has an alt alongside Nessa, Leon, and Raihan (now we need Piers to get one). To answer your question about whether or not this means she had a Tsareena (and a shiny one at that), I'd say it's very likely. Pokemon Masters is an interesting blend of canon and non-canon. Things that happen on the island itself, such as the PML league and the new villain arc, aren't canon to the main series. However, the trainer details have actually been confirmed to be canon. So Raihan, in his anniversary alt talking about how he met his Flygon, is a canon detail, as is Blue talking about how he's known as the Phantom Champion. Then, of course, there are the Pokemon choices for the trainers in the sync pairs. That's a bit of the grey area too. Obviously, Pokemon that are shown in-game (or the anime like Cynthia's Kommo-o) case are canon. But some of the alts/sygna suits are in a grey area. A lot of the legendary alts are non-canon (and I have some gripes with the legendary alts, but that's for another post), but some are (like N's being a reference to him having either Reshiram or Zekrom, depending on the version of the gen 5 games you play, to May being able to meet a Latias in ORAS canonically). With all of Sonia's team being unknown except for Yamper and the fact that Tsareena is not super rare/legendary, I'd say it's highly likely that she canonically has one. It'd be nice if we get to see her show off one in the Pokespe manga since things are starting to heat up there To answer your question about why they made Sonia Leon's rival, it's about making narrative parallels between the young adults (Nessa, Sonia, Leon, and Raihan) and the kids (Victor/Gloria, Hop, Bede, and Marnie). Sonia, like Hop, ends up leaving Pokemon training to do research while Leon and Victor/Gloria become champions. Many people in the Pokemon world have retired from training and thus don't show their full teams. One of the best examples of that is Professor Oak, who was Agatha's rival back in the day (and in some adaptations is confirmed to be a league champion), yet we've never seen his team outside of a Nidorino. He's not interested in battling like that anymore, so he doesn't feel the need to show off his time. I feel Sonia is the same way. I don't think anything bad happened to her team; she just doesn't feel the need to show off her entire team. Now, of course, I would love for us to see more of her team because in the manga, at least it's confirmed Leon has never beaten her in battle, so I'd love to see her team composition. Not to mention there are a bunch of G-max Pokemon that haven't gotten a debut under a trainer, and I feel like she would likely have one G-max-capable Pokemon on her team. And I just want to see more researchers (and female researchers at that) show their battling chops.
