The pilot is finally here
I finally finished my pilot. Constructive criticism only. You may give me asks about it or specifically give my characters asks.
Please do not try to claim this thing for your own, I put I lot of work into this. I do trust my followers however so I think it will be fine.
Patchwork Heart Pilot - Ouija
Monsters have existed for a long time. Not as long as humans of course, but they came into being very suddenly during the ice age. Towering beasts capable of levelling cities with primal instincts and a thirst for blood.
They continued to be part of human lives for all the years that were to come, although they got quite a bit smaller than their ancestors, and quite a bit less fearsome.
Humans and monsters never quite got along, and so, around the mediaeval ages, monster hunting arose. The monsters may have been strong but the humans were stronger, and their numbers began to dwindle.
And then it happened, they simply vanished without a trace into the night, undergoing rapid evolution into new forms in which they could hide from humanity. It was like they had never existed at all, and for many years, we assumed they did not.
Until about 25 years before this story takes place, in the year 2026 when just as suddenly as they had vanished, the monsters appeared once more. The monsters themselves had no ill intent, humanity had simply invaded their habitats and they were forced into new ones, the smarter monsters knew they’d lose more of their homes if they didn’t spread out and would be discovered at some point regardless, the dumber ones just wanted more to eat.
At first humanity reacted with fear. So many of these monsters were shockingly humanlike, but all boasted thousands of ways to kill. Soon though, they just became a part of life, and then humanity lost all fear of them.
Monsters started to be captured and sold off as a new form of exotic pet, or hunted down by a new wave of monster hunters, proving once and for all humanity was incapable of understanding the creatures.
This would be the beginning of the end, although few knew it.
In this time of chaos and destruction, unlikely heroes would arise. These heroes, both humans and monsters, would be the world’s last hope.
🜞🝣🜞
Sapphire awoke with a shock as her body was slammed into the wall, her eyes shot open and she scanned her surroundings, it was far too dark to see anything. She brought her fist up to the side of her head and whacked it, a light shone out of her visible eye like a flashlight, illuminating her surroundings.
Sapphire was most definitely not what anyone pictured when they heard the word monster. Most would first think of a towering clawed beast with a killer instinct, able to kill any man with a single blow. Sapphire on the other hand was rather small, completely albino, standing at 4’11”, she had no claws nor fangs, and in terms of instincts hers were all rather useless, she could understand most languages, had a slightly faster reaction time than most, could tell the exact measurements of objects on sight with an 84% accuracy, and thought herself to be rather good at forming plans. She was weaker than most young children despite being a grown adult, her body was almost weightless, she could not run very well, and in terms of menace she was as or more threatening than a kitten.
She appeared to be inside a 5’6” - 5’6” - 5’6” wooden crate, most definitely not where she went to sleep. Wonderful.
On top of all of this Sapphire was an amnesiac, she knew nothing about where she came from, nor what she was, and while she had a pretty large well of information about human history as well as half a million other subjects useless at the time, she knew nothing about monsters aside from the fact she was one. Truly all Sapphire had to her name was her mind, and an overwhelming desire not to die.
Sapphire didn’t know how she got here, where here was, or why she hadn’t woken up until now, but she did know that wherever she was she didn’t want to be there. Sapphire knocked on one of the walls, the west one, from the sound it appeared to be two inches thick, and to have another thicker box of 5 inches thick beside it, she definitely wasn't going out this way. Knocking on the south and east walls she noticed that they were the same width for sure, but had metal plating behind them. She knocked on the north wall of her box, and was pleasantly surprised by water damage, and only another two inch water damaged box beside it, still she doesn't want to risk ending up in another box. Sapphire tries the floor, it appears that wherever she is she’s on the bottom layer, and there's cement beneath. Finally, she knocks on the ceiling, there's another crate above and it feels full, going up is simply not an option. North it is.
Sapphire slams her body against the North wall, even with the water damage it takes quite a few attempts as her body strangely only weighs 50 lbs. However on the 12th hit the walls splinter and she lands in the next box.
Looking around this crate is much bigger, around 4 ft by 7 ft by 8 ft, on the east wall there is a metal chute for an unknown purpose and on the ceiling a 2ft by 2ft hatch, great, if only she can get up there she can get out.
Sapphire’s body chills when she hears the sound of something stirring within the crate, looking to the corner by the wall she smashed there's something quite large curled up into a ball. She can't identify what it is due to how it is curled but it doesn’t stay that way for long.
Sapphire finds herself staring directly into a pair of bright green eyes with slitted pupils, from the little of the face they belong to that is illuminated, she can see an elongated dog-esque muzzle that appears to be covered in thick human skin, a few caracal like facial patterns, and a rather nasty sharp toothed grin that had started to form on the creature’s face.
From the looks of its head size it could easily fit her head in its mouth, and from the look in its eyes, it wants to.
“Shit.” Sapphire mutters to herself, diving back into her crate, and turning off her flashlight, she can't see the creature now, although from the sounds of things it has stood up. Seconds later a terrible sound is heard, it's one of the loudest and most horrific things Sapphire has ever heard, an awful combination of a roar and a human scream, and its way louder than she could have ever imagined any creature could be capable of.
Suddenly the ceiling hatch swings open and Sapphire can see. The creature is humanoid in shape with long animal-like legs, a thick tail, a thin and gangly body, long arms, and a hunched posture, standing at about 6’4”. It has a catlike appearance with a long mane of matted hair, large sharp looking ears pointing directly up giving the creature an almost demonic appearance in a low enough light. Her monster is decidedly female looking although at first she couldn't quite tell, it also appears to be wearing clothing.
‘Large creature, catlike appearance, deadly looking features, presumably the ability to see very well in the dark, wearing clothing which gives the implication of sentience, appears to be female.’ Sapphire notes.
A dog catching tool descends from the hatch and wraps around the monster’s neck, pulling tightly around it, as a taser rod is also lowered and shocks the creature.
“See now this thing is loud as fuck. Her screams scare the other monsters but we can’t get a muzzle on her so this is the next best thing.” a voice says from outside as a dead rabbit is shoved through the chute from earlier.
“What the shit is it?” another asks.
“We don’t fucking know, all we know is we picked it up off the coast of Norway from the litter of a Huldra, but that thing is so clearly not one so we have no clue what it is. Whatever it is, it takes hits like it's no one's business and is just as good at dishing them out, so it's worth a lot.”
“The creature in the next crate is-”
“Who cares that thing is just some shit we found in an old condemned hotel resort, it's basically worthless. It’ll just be extra training for our cat.”
The dog catching tool and the taser retract and the hatch slams shut.
‘Apparently from Scandinavia, takes hits really well so killing it is probably even less of an option than I initially suspected, apparently hits hard too which is just unfair. My survival chances are around 14.5723%.’ Sapphire notes.
The creature drops down on four legs, and starts tucking into the rabbit, eating the whole thing in under a minute before turning its attention back to her. ‘Well I’m fucked.’
“Oh I’m going to enjoy ripping you apart.” The creature snarls in a raspy voice, with a slight but hardly noticeable Norwegian accent. ‘Make that an 18.692% chance, this thing can understand speech.’
“Where am I?” Sapphire asks, she thinks she can likely bode with a 18.692% survival chance.
“The SS go fuck yourself, on a one way trip to the mainland. Not that you’ll live long enough to see it.”
“Ah yes, about the whole killing me thing, why do you want to?” Sapphire questions, as casually as she can manage staring down her possible death.
“You got me tased you bitch.”
“No, you got yourself tased with that scream, not to mention you seemed to intend to kill me before, did I read that right?”
The creature narrows its eyes “Why the fuck are you being so calm I’m going to kill you. Wait… are you… into this? Like… INTO this? Gotta say toots, thats fucked up. I mean I've heard of masochism but getting off to being offed… wow.”
Sapphire blushes at this.
“Holy shit fuck you are into this. Look man, I’m going to kill you anyway, I guess you being into it is just a plus for you.”
“IT'S NOT LIKE THAT!!! I DON’T WANT YOU TO KILL ME!!!!!” The albino yells, losing her cool for a moment, face entirely red. “I’m simply trying to let us settle this like adults, not murder-happy toddlers.” Sapphire says through gritted teeth.
“Mmmmmmm… not so sure I believe you but I’ll give you a pass for now. Alrighty, lets talk about this ‘like adults’” the cat creature says mockingly. “Riddle me this, Batman, why should I NOT kill you.”
Sapphire goes silent for a moment going through what has happened in the past few minutes. “Earlier those people who tased you, they mentioned me having a low value as if the both of us have a price tag to our names. Am I to presume I - and by extension you - am being trafficked?”
“Finally caught up, eh?”
“So we are both being sold as if we are objects? I presume once we get to the mainland you’re being handed off to whoever bought you, or at least being auctioned off.”
“What are you getting at, I don't have all day, got a lot of killing you to do today.”
“Look, you probably don't wanna be sold, I don't wanna be sold, and I also don’t wanna die. I believe we can find a way where none of those things happen.”
“Ah but see, I want you to die.”
“Killing me would be a quick thing I’m sure you would barely even remember a couple days from now, I get the impression that you do a lot of killing, we’re talking about the rest of your life here. Will you or won't you be some asshole’s pet?”
“Actually I’d be more like an attack dog.”
“Still a pet.”
“Ok the real question is, how can you help me? If there was an easy way off this ship I would have found it. I cant even get out of this fucking box.”
“It's simple, I can create a plan to get us out of here, well out of this box at least, however once we are out I work very well under pressure… I think.”
There's a moment of silence, and Sapphire is pretty sure she’s about to die now. Negotiation had never been her strong suit given that she hated almost any form of interaction with anyone.
“...Alright…” The monster sits down. “Under a few conditions, that is.”
“Oh… and what… what might those conditions be.” Sapphire really did not expect to get this far.
“First of all, if you turn out to be shit at this, I will tear apart your pathetic little body and consume the… delicious… delicious… blood inside.”
“Fair, I would have it no other way, I assure you that I am not bad at this.”
“Also we gotta make a pitstop. See I got a brother and a sister, and they’re on an island all locked up and miserable, and I’m not leaving them there if I’m free.”
“WHAT!? You want us to go to wherever the FUCK these ASSHOLES are keeping monsters locked up?! How the HELL are you this dim!? A plan won’t get us through a rain of bullets!!!”
“Breaking into a heavily guarded base or me eating you right now, make your choice.”
“Fine fuck you.”
“Final thing, I… I’ll figure it out later but there is a final thing.”
“WHAT?! BUT YOU- you can't just do that!!! You can't just ‘figure it out la-’ mmmph!?” Sapphire is cut off from her rant by the cat slamming her massive hand over Sapphire’s mouth.
“Shhh! We don’t want anyone hearing we’re working together, do you? Good now stop yelling you bitch.” the cat removes her hand from Sapphire’s face.
“Call me that again and-” She snarls.
“Ok so we should probably know each other's names before we continue! I don’t tend to ask my dinner’s name so I don’t know who you are.” The cat says simply, cutting the albino off.
“Sapphire Valiant.” Sapphire hisses in annoyance.
“Faria Nightingale! Sexiest piece of ass either north or south of the equator because I don’t know where we- you know what I’m the sexiest of both. Sapphire’s a lil long, how about Saffie.”
“My name is Sapphire and you will refer to me by no other name, least of all an immature nickname.”
“Ok then Saffie, it's settled!” Faria violently shakes the albino’s hand.
Sapphire sighs in defeat, her complaints fall on not deaf ears, but the ears of someone who finds it amusing to spite her, which is worse. “Very well, I do hope this arrangement is fruitful.”
“WHOA! Thats a lil forward Saff dontcha think?”
“WHAT?!” The stitched up monster shouts in indignation.
“Fruitful, that means gay, right? You want our arrangement to be gay as shit?”
“NO!!! FruitFUL not fruitY you blasted DONKEY!!!!!! Fruitful means mutually beneficial.”
“Same dif. Also I'm a CAT not a DONKEY.”
“W-whatever I’m done arguing with you. J-just let me start working on my plan, ok?”
“Sure. But just so you know… I hope our relationship is very fruity too.” the cat says teasingly. Sapphire is not so sure she can survive working with Faria, she just might jump into the sea before getting back home.
🝁🝢🝁
“That's not fair! I don't want anyone to get hurt!” a young Kim-Ly said, stamping her foot.
“Well too bad because the news man says that the monsters are super dangerous.” Sabrina responds.
“But I don't want them to be dangerous!”
“They are though! We’re all going to die!” Sabrina says, her voice a little shaky from the implications, although she’s far more focused on winning the argument.
“BUT I DON’T WANNA!” Kim-Ly says in tears.
The argument continues like that for a while, until Sierra gets there, Sabrina’s 15 year old sister, and in a way, Kim-Ly’s as well. “Hey uhhh… what's going on?”
“Sabby says we’re all gonna die but I don’t wanna!”
“But it's true! The monsters wanna kill us all!”
“Hmph well… we don’t need to die because they want us to, do we? No one always gets what they want. Someone will stop them.”
“Who?” Sabrina says, confused.
Sierra thinks to herself for a moment. “I will, and you two can help me.” Sierra picks a stick off the ground and holds it up like a sword. “I vow to forever protect all those in need from anyone who would wish to harm them.”
Kim-Ly picks up another stick doing the same thing as Sierra “Me too! I’m not gonna let anyone get killed! Not even the bad guys!”
“Loser! I’m going to shoot all the bad guys until they stop being bad!” Sabrina says, holding up her own stick.
“So it's settled, the three of us are the first, and last line of defence for anyone who needs it. We are the Anti-Evil Defence Squad! And our first order of business, getting icecream!”
Both the children cheer and follow after Sierra.
🝁🝢🝁
Kim-Ly woke up, she had been dreaming about Sierra again, she’s really got to talk to someone about that, it's been years, Kim-Ly and Sabrina were 16 when she died, she sighs and gets out of bed. Today is her day off, which of course means its not her day off its time to see what Sabrina needs help with.
Sabrina had not been seen in 2 weeks, as per usual. Kim-Ly had been appointed as an unofficial caretaker (and coworker) for her eccentric best friend, despite not wanting to do so in the slightest. Unfortunately, Sabrina had long since proven she couldn't be trusted on her own, she had gone an entire month without leaving her apartment even once, surviving off of seemingly spite and dirty napkins, needing to be hospitalised for a badly infected leg from a wound she had never patched up.
See Kim-Ly and Sabrina were monster hunters, Sabrina being much more… passionate… about the career path, although obsessive was a better word for it. Kim-Ly was interested in monsters of course, but not so much killing them as she was interested in studying them.
Kim-Ly got dressed in her regular clothes, knowing quite well that Sabrina would make her change as soon as she got there anyway, she was into the ‘pageantry’ of monster hunting.
Kim-Ly got in her car after a quick, and rather sad breakfast of leftover pizza she found in her apartment, she made her way down to the apartment building’s parking lot.
Just as she got to her car, Kim-Ly was jumped, her attacker wrapping their hands around her throat. She tried to buck them off but could not.
After a minute of this, the attacker let go. “Really, Kim, what are you gonna do if a vampire jumps out at you, those things only need a second and access to your neck and you’re either a drained husk or one of them.” Sabrina… of course it is.
Kim-Ly got up, she had always been taller than the brunette, not that she was tall at all, no just 5’7”, however Sabrina was a little on the short side, at about 5’1”. “Sabby, what are you doing out of your-”
“-base of operations, yes I know I tend not to leave unless I need to, however I was worried about you. It seems I was right to because you don’t watch your surroundings, AT ALL.”
“-apartment. I don’t tend to need to, given that monsters aren't actually all that common.”
“Neither is getting cancer when you are 6, but that still happens all the time, and we need to watch out for it. It's also my BASE OF OPERATIONS, not my APARTMENT. Although I do live there, I sold my apartment to buy my base of operations.” Sabrina says, shockingly defensive over this. “Now come along, I’m driving.”
“No you can't drive.”
“And why not.”
“No I don't mean I won't let you, you just actually can't drive.”
“Horseshit, I drive great.” Sabrina says, opening the car door. “I already hotwired your car anyway.” She slides into the driver's seat.
“I- ok. I’m going to have you arrested one of these times.”
“HAH THERE'S NO PRISON I CAN'T CHEW MY WAY OUT OF!!!”
“I wish there was sometimes.”
“Why, I’m humanity's first and last line of defence against the supernatural. We almost got murdered last month by a talking pile of flesh.”
“He didn’t attack us, he only cried and begged for mercy and then you shot him.”
“HE WOULD HAVE IF I HADN'T GOT HIM FIRST. Remember Sierra, Kim, those fuckers cant be trusted.”
“Right…”
The rest of the car ride was spent screaming as Sabrina disobeyed every speed limit imaginable. They arrived in Sabrina’s shitty neighbourhood and got out.
Kim-Ly always felt uncomfortable spending time in this neighbourhood. She knew why Sabrina lived this way, unlike herself Sabrina didn’t have a job besides being a monster hunter, not only that but she was rarely hired, it wasn’t that she was bad at it, on the contrary she was too good. Kim-Ly had lost most of her fear of monsters years ago, she had realised they were not trying to kill everyone, rather they were simply animals that humanity had gotten too close to and were fighting back. Sabrina didn't see it that way, she wanted to kill them all. This clashed a lot with what her clients wanted, as many had been keeping the monsters as pets, and those who did want a removal were often surprised to find that the land they had been trying to protect had been damaged more by Sabrina herself. Rather than being rich like some monster hunters, able to be simply well off, or surviving on the job because she had another one, Sabrina’s monster hunting had landed her in deep debt. She had demanded for Kim-Ly not to help her, and while she tried at first to convince Sabrina she needed it, she had failed and since given up.
They reached Sabrina’s apartment building, and didn’t need to go far to find her apartment, as she lived on the ground floor.
Kim-Ly was shocked to find papers pinned to Sabrina’s door, arguably more shocked than she should have been. “What are-”
“Eviction notices. It's fine, I have guns.”
“Sabrina…” Kim-Ly sighs, as Sabrina opens the door.
Kim-Ly knew her own apartment was a mess, she was 24, just out of college, and still figuring out how to take care of herself while trying to also care for her best friend. It was nothing compared to Sabrina’s.
The apartment was small, 2 rooms, a shitty kitchen, and a bathroom, the first room supposedly a living room, that Sabrina had made her bedroom so she could hide her… projects. The floor was covered in remnants of takeout, dirty clothes, the occasional bullet, and mouldy food, all topped off by a sprinkling of rats and cockroaches.
The two women travelled towards the second room, which should have been a bedroom, and this is where the mess changed from concerning sad first apartment (especially concerning because it wasn't her first), to homicidal. The walls were lined with newspaper clippings, photos, logos, and thread, Sabrina tended to spend the time between hunts looking for more hunts, ones she wouldn't even get paid for. Interrupting the papers and threads was the occasional trophy from the hunts. Skin, heads, bones, teeth, eyes… It was horrific. The floors were covered in weapons. How Sabrina managed to get them all, she had no idea. Most of the guns had been outlawed all the way back in 2034, and there were never bombs like this for sale in the first place.
In the centre of it all was Sabrina’s desk, where she built her traps. She had been scattering them all through the city, yet another thing she was being sued for. God damn did Sabrina feel blessed that she hadn’t put her name on the company.
Sabrina handed her the classic outfit that she had long since accepted that the woman wouldn't let her not wear, a pair of leather pants and jacket with a shirt promoting a band she had never heard of.
She went to the bathroom to change and then returned to the “planning room”.
“So what is it this time?”
“A client hired us to get an abyss screamer off his land.” Ah, the one upside of the job. Kim-Ly loved monsterology, and it gave her first hand experience interacting with ones she had never seen, and sometimes never even heard of before. Abyss screamers were new to her.
“What’s an abyss screamer.”
“Don’t know much about them actually, just basically that they’re feral monsters that spew this gross black sludge everywhere that smells like rotten flesh and ruin anything they touch. Oh and that they’re humans with a parasite.”
“So are they really even monsters?”
“Of course they fucking are I don’t give a shit who they were before, they let themselves get infected and now we have to blast them sky high. Take this, we’re going to obliterate this thing.” Sabrina says, handing Kim-Ly an ak-47 she had somehow gotten.
🜞🝣🜞
“So for the last time, you are clear on the plan. You aren't going to throw me at the ceiling again?”
“Hey, the second time was a joke.”
“It wasn't funny.”
“For you maybe. I found it hilarious. But yeah, I’m clear on the plan. Are you going to be able to actually do it?”
“Look, Nightingale, I may be weak physically but I can hold my own in a fight I’m sure.”
“If you die, can I eat you?”
Faria nods, and screams, even louder than before. Sapphire felt like her ears would be bleeding if she had blood, I guess that answers her question about if she did or not.
She went to hide in the corner, and a few seconds later the hatch swung open. Faria had the dog catching tool locked on her neck again, but this time, Sapphire used the taller woman to get herself out of the hatch.
“SHIT! THAT THING SHOULD BE DEAD!”
“I FUCKING KNOW THAT BRIAN!”
Sapphire threw herself at the first of the two men, a rather undignified method of attack, but she could not do much better.
Weak and small as she was, Sapphire was easily thrown off, and over the side of the crate, to the cement floor outside.
The men dropped down, preparing to finish the job, and neglecting that Faria was now left unmonitored with the hatch open.
Faria leapt up to the opening and pulled herself out as if it was nothing, standing on top of the crate and screaming, turning the men’s attention away from Sapphire.
What was to follow couldn't even be classified as a fight, as Faria jumped down from her box, landing on top of one of the men and knocking him to the ground, his head now bleeding. She turned to the next and unsheathed her claws, clawing the man in the face deeply, before shoving her hand through his chest completely, he fell to the ground dead after she removed it.
A bullet pierced Faria’s shoulder, as the cat proceeded to seemingly not care in the slightest, turning and screaming again, before grabbing the man, and crushing his skull in her jaws, spitting the rest out.
The events that had taken place were most definitely not a fight. No they were a slaughter, the two men who thought they could control the monsters aboard the ship were brutally shown just how wrong they were.
Sapphire found it strangely beautiful.
She knew Faria was dangerous, of course she did. Anyone who looked at the 6’4” snowcat knew she was dangerous. But seeing such a dangerous monster in action… Sapphire would never forget that.
“Shit sorry, did you wanna kill those?” Faria asks.
“N-no I’m glad you jumped in.” Sapphire says.
“You look a lil’ uhhh… well your face is a colour, kinda bluish, and I don’t think thats normal. Saffie, you sure you’re ok?”
Sapphire out of curiosity touches her face, unusually warm. Is she… blushing?! WHY!? HOW?! WHY IS IT BLUE!?! God she hopes whatever the fuck is going on right now didn’t awaken something in her.
“Heh, thanks Saffie, I was stuck in that crate for a week, it feels good to stretch my legs.” The cat reaches out a hand to Sapphire. Or rather a paw… hand… paw… no it seems like a mix of both. Sapphire takes the opportunity to get a better look at Faria. Faria is most definitely not pretty, she’s in a strange place between a human and an animal visually, her face leaning closer to animal. That’s not to say Sapphire doesn’t find any enjoyment looking at her, in fact she’d say- no this is not the time, nor the creature she wants to be doing this with.
Sapphire takes the cat’s hand-paw and is quickly pulled to her feet, watching in fascination as Faria pulls the bullet from her shoulder, and the wound closes up only seconds later. This explains why she’s seen as so durable.
“Gotta say I don’t really get your strategy. Getting thrown over the side and all.”
“That was not a strategy. You were rather close to getting to eat me like you wanted.”
“Nah, I don’t actually wanna eat you much anymore, sorry. Kinda hard to bite your head off when I like you.”
“You like me?”
“Yeah, you got me out of my box, and let me kill things. Course I like you.”
“Hmph, well I don't ENTIRELY hate you either.” Sapphire says.
“Now, where to next? I wanna get there as soon as possible to let my siblings out.”
“Well I was thinking we’d go below deck and find an escape ship. They’d never even know we were gon-”
“NO!” Faria exclaims, sounding terrified. “I-I can't do that shit. Those boats, I’ve seen ‘em all over TV, they’re fucking tiny… I can barely do one this big. I can't swim, Saff, what if something goes wrong.”
“I can swim. I can help you.”
“No, look, I’ll only do a lifeboat if there's absolutely no other option.”
“Fine… we could… try to take the ship over or something. I’m assuming these crates contain other monsters, ones who also don’t want to be sold, if we release them we may be able to take control.”
“Well what the fuck are we still waiting around for? Lets let these fuckers loose!”

The drive to the site is not quiet. Kim-Ly doesn't say anything, she doesn't get a chance to. The drive is filled with nothing but Sabrina talking about how she wants to kill her next victim. Kim-Ly struggles to get Sabrina to ever talk about things unrelated to monster hunting. She gets it, Sierra may have been like a sister to her, but she was Sabrina’s sister. But there's no proof monsters killed her. In fact, it seems like a human did, that's what all the evidence points to.
Yes, the body vanishing into thin air is suspicious, still…
They arrive at the site, it's an old country club. Of course it is. Monster hunts aren't cheap, even if Sabrina charges the lowest on the market despite everything. Plus from what she’s heard abyss screamers aren't an actual threat, just an annoyance, she’s never encountered another abyss related creature, no Abyss Guardians, Abyssborn, and especially not an Abyssfolk, in fact, from what she’s heard no one’s ever come back from the Abyss without being rendered insane from the trauma or now, apparently, coming back with a parasite taking over their minds.
She was interested, if she ever found an Abyss Guardian she might try to get them to send her, they were living portals afterall.
The two girls came up to their destination, and Sabrina excitedly jumped from the car, grabbing her bag of guns, knives, bombs, and traps. It seems as if another lawsuit is coming.
Sabrina starts laying down traps anywhere she can. It would be fine if they were just bear traps, but somehow Sabrina had also found landmines. Kim-Ly becomes more tempted by the day to have the police raid Sabrina’s house, she doesn't feel like anyone should have these things just laying around.
Of course Sabrina would get arrested, and likely sent to the psych ward, by trying to prove she wasn't crazy. Unfortunately Sabrina probably wouldn't get the help she needed there.
“So what now, how do we hunt these things?”
“Wait for them to get trapped and then pump ‘em full of lead.”
“No special way to hunt them down?”
“Nah, I would do that, but I actually got a lot of jobs this week, and I want to get to all of them so I can kill more monsters.”
‘Well at least that means she might be able to pay the bills… If she doesn't get sued.’
🜞🝣🜞
Sapphire and Faria travelled below the deck, looking for tools they could use to open the crates, as well as in Sapphire’s case, a way of knowing which crates were safe to open, as well as how she could ever possibly go about this suicide mission this cat was forcing her to undertake.
Faria was a rather strange creature, every movement she made taught Sapphire something new and unexpected. Her thin elongated frame was unbalanced, despite the shocking size of her paws, Faria was clearly made for snow, afterall, to handle her unbalanced nature her tail had taken the role of an extra leg. The tail was thick and muscular, appearing prehensile, and from what she had seen, rather strong, she used it to hold herself up when still and to push off the ground when in motion.
Faria was really everything Sapphire wasn't. Where Sapphire was small and in a physical sense, useless, Faria was large, and clearly capable of beating almost any creature she was put up against in a fight. Sapphire envied her, she being as small and weak as she was meant that she was always at the mercy of larger creatures, like the cat herself. She was a creature made to be at the bottom of the food chain who could only get anywhere by means of determination, aggression, and paranoia. Even before getting stuck on this ship she was forced to hide away from even teenagers who just came to the old hotel resort she lived in thinking it was haunted.
Sapphire scoffed at the thought. Ghosts. Sure, with everything else that existed in the world they probably did as well, but even so what could the dead do? Death was something to be avoided for a reason, and if Sapphire were to die, she wouldn't want to become a ghost, that sounded horrible. Of course she’d surely be unlucky enough. If ever she were to meet a ghost she’d definitely not hesitate to tell them how stupid and useless she thought their existence was.
Sapphire was snapped back into the present by the sound of another guard unlucky enough to have seen the two of them having his head crushed against a wall and then being thrown aside. Faria didn't even really seem to be trying, the act of killing was an absent minded one for her. Sapphire felt envy as well as other feelings she did not want to talk about.
The two of them walked through the dimly lit hallways of the ship, almost forgetting they were on one if not for the gentle swaying.
They finally came to a room that seemed useful. The computer room. “Stop. I think this room will likely suffice for my purposes.” Sapphire says simply. “Can you clear it for me?”
Inside the room were 11 people, all who started either arming themselves or running towards the alarm system when they entered.
Sapphire didn’t even get time to blink before Faria had already killed 3. A few shots were fired, all missing the cat and then 4 more were dead. Faria killed 3 with a swipe of her claw, and ripped the final man’s head off, before turning to Sapphire and bowing. “Voila, room cleared, now do whatever it was you wanted to do, Saffie.”
“If you don’t drop that nickname I will burn you alive.”
“Sssssssaffie.” The cat says smugly, booping Sapphire’s nose.
“I’m going to kill you.”
“You can tryyyyyyy~” Faria sing-songs.
Sapphire groans, and simply goes to one of the computers, quickly finding what she wants. Sapphire had a way with technology, almost a feeling of unification with it. For her, computer files were far more understandable than emotions. As if she were herself a computer she could almost download and pull up any information she needed at any time. And so she set to this exact process, reading through every single file on every single monster aboard the ship, the number apparently being around 500.
The process was quicker for Sapphire than it would be for most. She didn’t read like most people either. She read a page the same way one would read a single word, it didn’t take more than 10 minutes to get through all of them.
Once she had finished she pushed back slightly from the screen noticing Faria shaking her, saying her name repeatedly and almost panicked.
“Could you stop that? It's distracting.” Sapphire says in annoyance.
“FUCK!” Faria says, jumping slightly. “Jesus what the fuck was that? You just sat down in front of that thing and then just stared at the screen for like 9 weeks.”
“Faria, I have a rather good sense of time, it has been 10 minutes.”
“Whoah, way longer than that…”
“Faria, what do you think a week is? How much time do you think a minute is.”
“I dunno, I thought they were interchangeable.”
Sapphire sits there, dumbfounded. She had assumed Faria had no formal education of course but still… she just turns back to the computer. “Your siblings were on the island with you, yes? The second place you were held?”
“Yep.”
“Then I take it that's where you want us to go, right?”
“‘Course.”
“Right, now I’m going to take this opportunity to look over all of the computer’s information about that island, as well as the layout of this ship. I will be doing the same thing as before. Keep me safe while I do this, I am not aware of my surroundings while I do it.” With that Sapphire looks for the files relating to the island… oddly there are only 20 monster files.
The island was not a place where most monsters were kept, only particularly dangerous or annoying ones. According to the files Faria had been placed there after killing 14 people as a child on what could only be considered an adrenaline high, the people had been attempting to euthanize her and her instincts seemingly took over causing her to attack. Apparently she had been raised up until that point to be a household servant but was never good at it and wasn't able to be sold because of a mix of her terrible skill in it and her, according to the files, “unfortunate deformed appearance”. Humans really did seem to consider any humanoid monster that didn't look exactly like them to be ugly. Instead of continuing to try to kill Faria they decided to train her instead for cage fighting on this island, seemingly Faria’s skill in battle was a result of more than just genetics.
The creatures on the island were ones that had to be looked after by better trained guards and placed under higher security, Faria being one of the least dangerous, surprisingly. Apparently Faria could be easily pacified by putting a TV in front of her. Sapphire wished she knew that before.
Notably, there were no other cat monsters on the island. Sapphire decided to finish up by looking at the ship's blueprints before confronting Faria.
“Why do you really want to go to that island?” Sapphire snarls.
“Eh? I toldja, my siblings.”
“Your siblings are not on that island.”
“Yeah they are the fuck are you talking about.”
“You were the only cat monster in the entire facility.”
“And when did I say my siblings were cats? My sister is a bird, and my brother is… well I don’t know what he is but he’s colourful and looks like a clown snake.”
“Ah…” Sapphire was caught off guard by this. It makes sense. Those two creatures were on the island, although they were referred to as a shapeshifting finch and an Abyss Guardian respectively. She already knew Faria was unique, didn't she? She supposed it must have been one of the more normal siblings, but that didn’t make sense with what the island was for. “I am glad you do not seem to be deceiving me.”
“Why the fuck would I be doing that?”
“I do not know.”
“Saffie you know it's rude to assume things.”
“Sorry.” Sapphire chokes out. She’s never been good at empathy. It was a waste of time and energy. “I got all the information I need, I know which crates to open. According to your file your tail can lift 345 lbs, we can probably find some way to use that to open them. For what it's worth I truly am glad that we are on the same side, I would be… rather… uhhh… discontented if we were not. You are a… good acquaintance. This partnership is… most beneficial.”
“Awwwww~ That’s the most romantic thing anyone’s ever said to me~” Faria teases. “You really need to drop the tyrannosaurus talk though I only understand like half of it.”
“Thesaurus.”
“Ain't that a dinosaur?”
“...You know what, let’s just go upstairs and free some monsters so we can get out of here.”
🝁🝢🝁
It was dark out by now, Kim-Ly had spent the time waiting for something to happen working on her monster journal. She didn't get much time to work on it between her job and Sabrina.
Monsterology was a growing, but still small field, mostly because sane people tended to avoid them, and the few people who did interact with monsters often because of either hunting, being near a lot, or trafficking them, didn't tend to care much about them.
Kim-Ly however had always been interested in zoology, and the thought of studying such mysterious and undocumented creatures was something so unbelievably interesting to her. Unfortunately Sabrina’s kill all monsters rule left it hard for her to study anything but mangled corpses.
Right as she was finishing up the page she had been writing there was a loud and unmistakable sound of one of the baretraps closing. Sabrina, who had been napping, probably for the first time in weeks shot up at this, pumping her fist.
Kim-Ly closed her journal and put it back in her bag, following Sabrina who had shot off after the creature, looking like she was even more unstable than usual with the amount of guns strapped to her.
They reached the source of the sound, sure enough a human man with black goo oozing from every hole in his body (including the massive hole from what looked to be a shotgun on his chest).
The man upon seeing them, shrinks back in fear. “P-please don't kill me I need this body to survive and he was already dead when I found h-” a female voice starts to say from within the body, the mouth not moving as it speaks. It’s cut off when, without a second thought, Sabrina shoots it in the head. The creature falls to the ground.
“It's a brain parasite. Shooting it in the head kills it. ” Sabrina deadpans. “Get that jar you carry around for this stuff, this thing isn't good for trophies. Maybe you can put it in that book of yours.” the brunette says, “Not that anyone will need a monsterology book much longer.” the girl turns to walk back to the car.
Kim-Ly takes out her jar and crouches by the corpse. She feels bad for them. The parasite really didn't sound like they had any darker motives. She sighs and scoops up some of the slime into the jar and puts it back in her bag, before being startled by the sounds of 4 more gunshots.
She stands up and walks towards the sounds, finding Sabrina kneeling by a family of wolpertingers she shot by their burrow. The girl shrugs and grabs the larger of the two adults and slings it over her shoulder, seemingly glad she got a trophy out of this afterall.
Kim-Ly never liked monster hunting. Well maybe she did at the beginning before she truly knew what Sabrina was dragging her into but now… it just felt so wrong. Sabrina was on a warpath, she clearly couldn't even see what she was doing anymore, anything even remotely monstrous even a winged, horned rabbit which posed no threat to anyone would be shot on sight.
Kim-Ly had considered telling Sabrina this, but she knew if she did then Sabrina would shut her out entirely. As much as she knew she needed to take care of her own life and she knew watching Sabrina kill helpless creatures absolutely was not doing that, she wouldn't let a girl she had known since infancy destroy herself like this. She’d been trying to help Sabrina, get her to a therapist, get her out of the house, force her to learn to cook for herself so she wasn't eating nothing but fast food. But it was starting to feel hopeless. No matter what she said to Sabrina she never listened.
It was clear by this point, she just liked killing things.
Sierra would be disgusted.
As Kim-Ly walked by she heard some chirping from the den the wolpertingers had been living in, and immediately leapt towards it, looking inside. Sabrina had missed one. A baby she hadn't seen had survived. If it were left on its own it would die, and if she told Sabrina about it it would die.
Kim-Ly decided enough was enough, she wasn't going along with this anymore. The monsters weren't hurting anyone, at least not the ones they’d been fighting. People just didn't like them. She wouldn't officially quit, but she would do whatever it took to stop Sabrina from claiming more victims, and hopefully save her too in the process.
Kim-Ly scooped up the wolpertinger and placed it in her bag, carrying it back to the car, and turning on the radio so that Sabrina wouldn't hear the chirping.
This was one thing she wouldn't let Sabrina get her way on.
🜞🝣🜞
A full state of chaos was ensuing aboard the ship as exactly 212 monsters had been released and were currently running amuck across the deck.
“What now?” Faria asks, sitting next to Sapphire on top of a crate. Faria sat in a strange way, or at least strange for a humanoid, completely normal for a cat.
“Now, we wait for the guards numbers to dwindle and then attack the ship’s navigators and change course. I promise my plan is foolproof.” Sapphire says, jumping down from her box, Faria follows after her. “For the record, you irritate me far less now than when we initially met, granted you did try to eat me then and are no longer trying to do that, but I must admit you truly have grown on me.” Sapphire says, turning to face the cat.
“Eh, you’re every bit as much of a pretentious dick as when I first met you but I don't overly care so we’re cool.”
“Faria… do you have anywhere to go after you rescue your brother and sister? I… might not entirely like the idea of never seeing you again.”
“Are you inviting me to stay with you, Saff?”
“I… yes…” Sapphire blushes.
“Ah what the Hell it's not like I have anywhere I need to be after all this. Plus I think I’ve managed to figure out your language and yeah, I like you too, let's be friends… or more~” Faria says, half joking with the last part.
“Indeed, this partnership should be continued, its ceasement may end in both our demise anyway so I see that it would likely be beneficial for the two of us to make this bond official by creating a sense of comradery between us.”
“I like your funny words, magic man.” Faria says, and it's at that moment, everything goes wrong.
6 large, spearlike, harpoons impale the cat, causing her to yelp and kneel forward to Sapphire’s horror. Faria tries to stand back up but is promptly hit in the neck with a dart. She sways for a moment before falling forward, landing on top of Sapphire.
Sapphire looks up to see the men who attacked the cat getting mauled by a minotaur.
She looks back to the cat on top of her, her breathing is shallow but still present. Surely this won't kill her… right? Sapphire is shocked by how strongly she feels for the woman that she had only met hours before, but she knew more than anything that she didn't want Faria to die, and if she did, she most definitely didn't want the assholes on this ship to have her body.
Sapphire flipped herself around and stood up, Faria now on her back, with the harpoons digging into Sapphire’s flesh. She began to slowly drag Faria to somewhere more quiet. Seeing that the guards were regaining control of the situation. The plan had failed and if Sapphire didn’t get off this ship right now she’d never get another chance.
She knew how Faria felt about the lifeboat situation but it was the only option.
As the chaos continued Sapphire dragged Faria towards the lifeboats that she had located on the ship’s blueprints before. It was a slow process, as Sapphire was not only weak, but Faria was shockingly heavy.
Sapphire eventually reached the lifeboats, somehow managing not to be seen and grabbing one, taking it back up and dropping it into the water., before jumping off the edge of the ship.
🝁🝢🝁
Kim-Ly sat at her desk at home, the wolpertinger in front of her eating lettuce out of a bowl.
She wasn't quite sure what to do with it. She looked down at her journal, she had been absentmindedly drawing the wolpertinger.
Kim-Ly knows that if she names it, or decides to keep it for any other reason than research then that means a commitment, and she’s starting to have second thoughts…
No.
This wolpertinger is not a danger to anyone and shouldn’t be treated as such. It's just a rabbit with wings and horns, not only that but it's a baby.
Just because Sabrina thinks her sister might have been killed by monsters doesn't mean she has the right to go genocidal on anything considered remotely supernatural.
She looks down to her journal, and on the page beside the drawing, she titles the page “My new friend Chiffon.”
🜞🝣🜞
Sapphire wakes up to the sound of someone hyperventilating. She looks down to see Faria curled into a ball sobbing, the bloodied harpoons in front of her, having been ripped out. The ship is long gone, having passed them by without even noticing.
“I’m… sorry Faria. If we had stayed on the ship we would have never gotten away. I believe I can still get us to the island.”
“I’m going to die…” The cat mumbles. “I’d rather be on that ship than here.”
“Do not say that, I will get us out of this. Sure, my first plan may have been grossly miscalculated, I did not account for tranquiliser darts, however from this point on I will attempt to prove that this was indeed a fluke.”
“I don’t give a shit your plan failed. I really wouldn’t care if you were just some dumbass or the world’s best fucking stratagist. I just don't want to be on this boat. I cant fucking swim Sapphire, its too bright, too hot, I cant run anywhere, I-I just want to go home.”
“I promise that I will take you home. I take promises very seriously Faria, I will not let you be hurt. I will get you to your family and then I will get you back to my home. You will not drown. It was a lapse in my judgement that got us here and it will be again my judgement that gets us out.”
