Our Amazing Trip to Montreal: History, Culture, and Racing
Montreal was the perfect destination for my wife and me in the summer of 2021. We had a blast discovering the city’s history, culture, and music through its many attractions. We were amazed by the Leonard Cohen mural on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, which pays tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter who was born in Montreal. We also visited the McCord Museum, where we learned about the indigenous…

Lisbon - Day 4 - Day trip to Evora
Monday 10/2
Today we took a day trip to Evora, whose history dates back to 2 BC when it was a Roman town. It was later controlled by the Moors and then the Christians.
We took a bus to Évora, located about 1.5 hours from Lisbon. Once you get beyond the cities in Portugal, the roads become notably less congested. Although the bus was labeled 'Évora', we mistakenly thought that was the final destination for everyone on board. It made a stop and the bus driver made an announcement in Portuguese, which we didn’t understand, and a few passengers got off. Assuming it was just a stop along the way, we stayed put. During the driver's short break at the stop, we began to question our assumption. It dawned on us that this was the Évora stop, and the bus was continuing to another destination with most of its passengers. Thankfully, we got off the bus before it left again. Who knows where we would have ended up.

The old town section of Evora is surrounded by a wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Historically an aqueduct brought water from outside the town walls into the town. The magnitude of the engineering and construction effort required to build an aqueduct never ceases to amaze me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evora has of the best-preserved Roman structures on the Iberian Peninsula, built around the 1st century AD. This Roman temple was part of the Roman forum and illiterates Roman occupation of Portugal.

We hiked up to the roof of the Evora Cathedral.

At the southern end of old town is the Church of St. Francis, which we also toured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saint Francis “invented” the manager scene as a tool to tell the Christmas story. We viewed an exhibit the church had of some of their nativity scenes which had been donated from all around the world. We have seen a similar exhibit, only with more nativity scenes on display in a church in Montreal. Here are two I found especially interesting. The one on the left because of the amount of activity in the manager scene, and the one on the right because I have never seen a Chinese Mary and Joseph.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This church had something unique… associated with the church is “The Chapel of the Bones”, which was built by three monks. They used the skull and bones of over 5,000 people buried in various Evora church graveyards to construct the chapel walls and columns.
At the entrance to the chapel above the door reads the message “APS OSSOS QVE AQVI ESTAMOS PILOS: VOSSOS ESPERAMOS” which supposedly translates to: "We bones in here wait for yours to join us."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we had enough of skull and bones, we took a bus back to Lisbon.
We ate dinner at New Himalaia, and as you probably can guess, is a Himalayan restaurant. The food was very good. At the restaurant I heard some people speaking English (a rarity), so I went up and introduced myself. More Canadians! Is anybody left in that country, or are they all visiting Portugal!

📻 What do I do? With a Love That Won’t Sit Still [Gen] 🖌️ Artist: @cambiodipolvere 🎵 Art medium: traditional (graphite)
🎵 Summary: Italian Greyhounds are small and fucked up, but Draco is a big fuck up and that requires scaling.
🎶 H/D Wireless Art and Fic 🎶
📻 A Halo of Fairy Orbs [E, 20.6k] 🖌️✒️ Author and Artist: vivi1138 / @penguinanimagus & Fae_vorite / @faevorite-main-blog 🎵 Art medium: digital art
🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy has been dead for fifteen years, but the Black Family tapestry doesn’t agree. Upon returning from long years abroad, Harry discovers that his old rival might still be alive, and his revived obsession leads him to Malfoy Manor. There’s a mystery to solve, and Harry is chasing a thrill he hasn’t felt since sixth year. He needs to know.
📻 Oh, Sinnerman [E, 40k] 🖌️✒️ Author and Artist: @lou-isfake and @babooshkart 🎵 Art medium: digital
🎵 Summary: “I’m serious, Potter,” Malfoy said quietly. “That was some real bad luck you had, being there last night. They will come after you, and they will kill you—after torturing you for information on my whereabouts.” He pocketed Harry’s wand, but held on to his knife, twirling it between his fingers. Harry was distracted by its movement, the reflections of the bright, dawning sun on polished silver. “I’m not happy about it, either, but you’re stuck with me for the foreseeable future.” He watched Malfoy’s face for a long time, in a staring contest he wasn’t sure he’d signed up for. Stuck with Malfoy, for the foreseeable future, on the run from a massive crime syndicate that had infiltrated the Ministry and was out for their blood. It was all very familiar, except for the Malfoy part.
📻 The Crane Lord of Gringotts [E, 31.1k] 🖌️✒️ Author and Artist: @vukovich and @crazybutgood 🎵 Art medium: Origami, photography
🎵 Summary: Harry is fine. Being an Auror is fine. Living with Ginny is fine. It's all fine. But it used to be a lot better.
📻 The World Is A Violent Sky [E, 60k] 🖌️✒️ Author/Artist: writingsbydestiny / @starlitsilvereyes 🎵 Art medium: Digital Art
🎵 Summary: Harry Potter wants to die; Draco Malfoy wants to live — a story of life and death, everything in between and beyond — in the form of scatters of love and hurt like freckles of stars forming into constellations. — Alternative Summary (And Significantly Less Poetic): Four years after the war, Harry remains grief-stricken. In an attempt to discover the parts of him that haven’t died in the Forbidden Forest, he drops off the face of Scotland to travel the world by himself. Along the way, he finds his old enemy, Draco Malfoy, in a Muggle country, looking positively dashing even with a slash of scar decorating his face. As always, Harry’s curiosity leads him to (un)fortunate places.
📻 The Stars Have Courage [M, 85k] 🖌️✒️ Author/Artist: @fantalf 🎵  Art medium: Digital painting
🎵 Summary: Draco can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t move. He can’t hear anything besides the buzzing in his ears. The walls are closing in. The world becomes smaller, narrowing itself to the pain in his chest, and it becomes the only thing that makes sense. He tries to cry. Maybe he is crying, but there are no tears anymore. Luna’s words echo endlessly in his brain. Harry doesn’t remember. Harry doesn’t love Draco. Repeating ceaselessly. Infinite, Harry used to say. No. No. No. Draco can’t lose him again. But he doesn’t know who you are now. He doesn’t love you. He hates you. You are no one. His world turns into an overwhelming pain. And that pain is all that he is. — Draco waited five long years to watch his husband wake up from a coma. He's not ready to meet a Harry with no memory of anything that happened after he died at The Battle of Hogwarts, twelve years ago.
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic Collab 🎶
📻 'Til Your World Burns [E, 25.3k] ✒️ 🖋️Authors: @ladderofyears and @iero0
🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy is raped and watches as his world falls apart. Harry Potter is the quiet, unassuming wizard who finally listens to him.
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic 🎶
📻 Inside These Walls [M, 5.6k] 🖋️ Author: @jackvbriefs
🎵 Summary: The year before Draco moves to Los Angeles, Harry Potter disappears. Draco doesn't mean to find him. He's just doing his job.
📻 Drive a Little Slower [Gen, 1.6k] 🖋️ Author: bluefay / @thesleepiesthufflepuff
🎵 Summary: He silently willed Harry to drive a little slower. To let him pretend a little longer.
📻 Two Zinnias and the Scent of Lemon [T, 16k] 🖋️ Author: thestarryknight / @the-starryknight
🎵 Summary: The Ministry didn’t turn bad overnight. Harry didn’t suddenly turn rogue either. Between covert Legilimency links and Polyjuice disguises and running and running and running, Draco has forgotten what it is like to have a safe harbor that isn’t a person. If there’s an art to fighting back, then they’ll find it hand in hand.
📻 Two Starts, One Finish [E, 5.5k] 🖋️ Author: @lqtraintracks
🎵 Summary: I feel him before I see him. Nobody stands this close to me while I’m playing, and I’m about to turn to tell him so when he says, “You’re a tough bloke to track down,” and then leans against my baby grand.
📻 Never Gonna Give You Up [E, 5k] 🖋️ Author: InnerLilith
🎵 Summary: Five times Harry rickrolls Draco, and one time Draco gets him back.
📻 Alone Together [T, 3k] 🖋️ Author: @iero0
🎵 Summary: He felt like a spectre, roaming the treeless grounds, the deserted streets of Hogsmeade. It was only the train station—of course it was, Harry thinks—that harboured another sleepless soul that night. They were found as though they had been looking for one another; freezing to the ground at the sight of an unmistakable silhouette in the distance, before wordlessly meeting on the platform. They stood there, side by side, faces to the sky.
📻 Nothing Left to Burn [E, 5,1] 🖋️ Author: skeptique / @skeptiquewrites
🎵 Summary: Over ten years after their fling crashed and burned, Harry runs into Draco and finds embers still burning bright. Sometimes your ex-lover is (metaphorically) dead. And sometimes it's summertime in Montreal and the past won't let go.
📻 The Isle of Discussion [E, 21.6k] 🖋️ Author: @shealwaysreads
🎵 Summary: Harry and Draco arrive at the shores of Loch Leven to record the magical history of the land. They’re friends now, but up there in the Highlands, amidst the trees and sky and that wild expanse of water their own past is more present than ever; a gap they still can’t bridge. Magic illuminates the truth, but it is Harry and Draco who have to speak it. Happily, it turns out that honesty is, in fact, the best policy.
📻 (You Should Have Been My) High School Lover [T, 3.9k] 🖋️ Authort: @aprofessionalprotagonist
🎵 Summary: After years of carefully avoiding running into Harry Potter, Pansy tricks Draco into attending a party at Grimmauld Place. How is he supposed to deal with a very attractive Potter trying to talk to him?
📻 Both Hands [E, 10.4] 🖋️ Author: @sweet-s0rr0w
🎵 Summary: It’s been over a decade since Draco packed up his belongings and left, and Harry’s doing just fine. Really, he is. So when he spots the For Sale sign outside their old flat, he doesn’t think twice about arranging a viewing. Curiosity is only natural, right? And what harm can come from a quick trip down memory lane?
📻 His favourite piece of art [E, 1.3k] 🖋️ Author: @gnarf
🎵 Summary: Six years after Malfoy had left, Harry suddenly spotted him on the dancefloor of a Muggle club in London. He couldn't let this opportunity slip…
📻 I'll Try to Keep the Walls From Falling Down [M, 14.9k] 🖋️ Author: @drarrelie
🎵 Summary: It’s OK. Love is only meant for some; Harry knows that. Besides, he wouldn’t want to risk this new, amazing friendship he has going on with Draco for anything in the world. Keeping his walls from falling down is the least he can do.
📻 Learn to Fly [T, 11k] 🖋️ Author: @janieohio
🎵 Summary: Harry’s suffocating under all the expectations of the wizarding world, but he’s fascinated at Malfoy’s sudden ability to flaunt his true self to whoever cares to watch. And Harry? He might like to do something more than watch if he can ever get up the nerve.
📻 Restless Dreams (Stay With Me) [T, 5.5k] 🖋️ Author: wanderingeyre
🎵 Summary: At first, Draco thinks the common room is empty, but then he sees Potter sitting on the floor, back to the wall on the far side of the fireplace. His head is thrown back, exposing the brown column of his throat. The curl of his hair looks soft in the firelight. Potter’s glasses are off and there are tracks where tears have wet his cheeks. He looks naked in a way that stabs at Draco, right between the ribs where everything is already bruised.
📻 Letters From Home [T, 1.1k] 🖋️ Author: @articcat621
🎵 Summary: Writing to each other is all that's getting them through this war.
📻 so lie to me tonight [T, 5.3k] 🖋️ Author: M0stlyVoid / @bonesliketambourines
🎵 Summary: Ginny thought it would be different, after.
📻 Mortal Frame [M, 6.6k] 🖋️ Author: tackytiger / @tackytigerfic
🎵 Summary: Draco’s on a mission, and this time it's personal. But it's not easy to track down something that no one wants to talk about, especially when Harry Potter keeps popping up everywhere Draco goes. Though at least he’s on Draco’s side this time, and if he happens to be useful, and kind, and great in bed—well, Draco’s not exactly complaining. The story of three pubs, one Horcrux, four overpriced sandwiches, and two damaged men just trying to make sure that Bellatrix Lestrange stays dead.
📻 Prologue [T, 4.5k] 🖋️ Author: adavison / @aedwritesfic
🎵 Summary: Ten years after the war, Harry stumbles across Malfoy in a Muggle club. What could have been an awkward encounter might just be a new beginning.
📻 A Care To Fill The Vessel Of Your Heart [M, 2.5k] 🖋️ Author: @onbeinganangel
🎵 Summary: Draco doesn’t care for atonement. Why should he? Forgetting is easier than forgiving. Or it would be, if fate just left him to his own devices. Fate, as per usual, has its own plans.
📻 Like a Dream I Can Reach (but not quite hold) [M, 19.4k] 🖋️ Author: Cassiara / @cassiaratheslytherpuff
🎵 Summary: Harry spends his life waiting for something he isn’t entirely sure he wants, and looking for something he doesn’t know exists. Everything feels ill-fitting until Draco Malfoy enters his life and shows Harry he doesn’t have to want the expected things, and Harry learns happiness doesn't have to look a certain way.
📻 Sun and Rain [M, 4.7k]
🖋️ Author: @isamijoo
🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy thinks that being in a relationship with Harry Potter is anything but easy, but then again, what's the sun without the rain?
📻 In Pursuit of Lost Marbles [T, 22k] 🖋️ Author:  Theartfulldodger / @graymatters
🎵 Summary: Every night after work, Healer Malfoy follows the same routine, beginning with a familiar flight of stairs that leads to the Janus Thickey Ward at St. Mungo's. With an air of professionalism, he introduces himself to Harry, his husband of seven years, when a memory curse makes Harry look at him like a stranger. He tries not to flinch when Harry calls him sir, but he smiles when bits of the old Harry emerge. Eventually, Draco leads Harry to the Pensieve where he shows him pieces of the life they've built together, what Harry will come home to, one day, when this is all over. Then, Draco waits. He waits, and he hopes.
📻 Requiem [T, 1.8k] 🖋️ Author: EvAEleanor / @evaeleanor
🎵 Summary: Requiem — A song of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person.
📻 Changes With The Moon [Gen, 1.6k] 🖋️ Author: @missdrarrydawn
🎵 Summary: Draco takes a stroll to try to settle his turbulent thoughts, plagued by who he was, who he is and who he could be. A friend offers him a whole new world and Draco struggles with the idea, for there is too much at stake, it isn't worth it. Or—is it?
📻 Chasing Dragons [E, 89.9k] 🖋️ Author: The_Sinking_Ship / @the-sinking-ship
🎵 Summary: Draco can think of only one way to outclass his pleat-front-khaki-wearing politician ex, and that’s by making headlines with an obvious upgrade. And who better to upstage the cheating bastard than the Saviour of the World, Harry Potter himself? Sure, Potter is a little rough around the edges in ripped jeans, a rumpled tartan shirt, and a permanent scowl. Draco reckons a haircut and a shave wouldn’t hurt, either. But Potter is also in need of a Healer willing to keep his secrets, and Draco is just the man for the job. It’s a perfectly reasonable exchange. They need only attend a couple parties arm-in-arm, smile nicely for the paparazzi, and tolerate each other long enough to convince everyone they’re smitten. In return, Draco will keep Potter alive and in one piece. But it isn’t long before Draco realises he might be in over his head, because Potter is ten tonnes of trouble packed into a leather jacket, and seems keen on hurtling himself towards death on the back of a flying motorbike. And that says nothing of Potter’s penchant for fire-breathing beasts and things that bite. Ah well, at least they’ll have some fun while it lasts. After all, Draco always did like a bit of danger.
📻 Drive, Draco [M, 2.4k] 🖋️ Author: Erebeus / @erebeus-roxy
🎵 Summary: got my driver’s license today, but you're not around to see. Can't drive past the places we used to go to 'Cause I still fuckin' love you, babe
📻 Fire [E, 10k] 🖋️ Author: GallifreyisBurning / @gallifrey1sburning
🎵 Summary: Draco Malfoy has never had trouble getting boyfriends. The problem is getting one that doesn’t leave him feeling cold after the first few months. He’s looking for something specific: passion, excitement, someone to keep him on his toes. He just doesn’t know how to go about finding it. After kicking his latest boyfriend to the curb, Draco’s at a loss for what to do next, until it occurs to him that a relationship with his fiery (and hot) Gryffindor colleague might not burn out so quickly—if he can just convince Harry to try it.
📻 Into the Unknown [M, 4.5k] 🖋️ Author: @drarrelie
🎵 Summary: It’s been echoing within him for months, like an annoying song that gets stuck in your head and refuses to let go. A nagging feeling in his core, telling him to say something, to do something, to go somewhere. Last night it finally happened. He did it. And it felt good; right. “I can’t be sure.” Four words, easy as that. It had been almost impossible to smother the sudden burst of joy rushing through him as that deep-seated urge rejoiced his unexpected act of rebellion. You’d think the Dark Lord’s punishment would’ve taken the exhilaration out of him, but no. Here he is, countless Crucios later, beaten and bruised, and never has the voice sounded this clear. He’s said something. He’s done something. And now he just has to go somewhere. He has no idea where, but he’s certain it will come to him. All he has to do is get out of here, then trust magic to do the rest.
📻 Home is What We Make of It [M, 20.3k] 🖋️ Author: @monsieur-hadrien
🎵 Summary: "There was a blistering draft from the child’s bedroom on the opposite side of the hallway. The door’s handle was icy to the touch as she wrapped her hand around the metal. Unlike the rest of the house, the door gave her resistance in her effort to open it. Unlike the rest of the house, when she opened the door, she couldn’t imagine anyone ever living there. Unlike the rest of the house, there was neither love nor warmth nor any semblance of life that seeped from the rest of the house’s walls. It was cold and hard and chilled her to her bones. She shivered. However, her sense of dread was not just from the cold. Perhaps it was the gaping hole in the wall." Harry and Draco want to start a family, but time loves parallels.
📻 Move, move [M, 9k] 🖋️ Author: @maesterchill
🎵 Summary: She grabbed Harry’s hand, slipping something small into it and pressing his fingers around it. “Dilectio. It’ll cheer you up. Make you feel like dancing.” Harry gaped at her. Drugs. Ginny’s fucking giving me drugs? At Stasis nightclub Ginny does indeed give Harry drugs. But it's all good: Malfoy looks after Harry, and Harry grapples with newfound enlightenments, not to mention a newfound fascination with all things Malfoy—one which persists, even when he finds out what Malfoy's up to.
📻 Euphoria [E, 66k] 🖋️ Author: @iero0
🎵 Summary: Driven by trauma, Harry cuts ties with friends and family. From crowded nightclubs and enthralling live shows, Harry finds himself stumbling into a superficial world where he's lonelier than ever. When even the constant blithe of substance-induced highs can't prevent things from becoming what he ran away from, Draco Malfoy finds Harry. Draco, who’s wearing Muggle jeans and who’s listening to Muggle music and who suggests having a nice little chat on mephedrone. And whose nose crumples beautifully when he laughs. Or: A story about Harry trying to cope with the help of drugs until he finds a new addiction. Draco likes to mend things.
📻 Your House [E, 2.9k] 🖋️ Author: @tontonguetonks
🎵 Summary: Draco tries to serve Harry divorce papers, but Harry isn't home.
📻 Misery Loves Company [E, 22.9k] 🖋️ Author: vivi1138 / @penguinanimagus
🎵 Summary: Stuck in his own head, misunderstood and lonely, Harry would love nothing more than to stay hidden in Grimmauld Place until the end of time. Malfoy won’t let him, and that's just what Harry needs.
📻 You Sexy Thing [E, 10.6k] 🖋️ Author: shortie990
🎵 Summary: As Harry began to tap his foot along to the music, the lights flashed like lightning in the middle of a summer storm, and his eye went straight to the middle of the dance floor. His eyes zoomed in on Draco. The blond looked striking as he moved his slender hips to the soulful beat. Harry watched, captivated as he pressed himself up to Pansy and began to sing to the song.
📻 A Love Story of Less-Than-Epic Proportions [E, 39k] 🖋️ Author: InnerLilith
🎵 Summary: Harry and Draco are just friends. Sure, they work together, and live together, and go to gigs together, and do pretty much everything else together—so what? That’s just what friends do. And Harry has no interest in messing with their friendship. He certainly doesn’t need everyone else constantly meddling, pestering them to just get on with it and get together already. He’s having a hard enough time as it is, trying to come to terms with the fact that he probably isn’t ever going to find love. But who needs love, anyways, when you’ve got a best friend?
📻 Cup of tea, Love? [E, 15.1k] 🖋️ Author: shushu_yaoi_lj / @orange-peony
🎵 Summary: Things between them are easy, so much easier than Harry expected. The problem is the outside world, which grows increasingly and ridiculously difficult. “We could leave,” Draco suggests. Harry has always wanted to travel.
📻 holemate [E, 18.9k] 🖋️ Author:  @vukovich
🎵 Summary: 'Cause I'm sick of losing soulmates So where do we begin? I can finally see you're as fucked up as me So how do we win?
📻 Home is Wherever I’m With You [Gen, 2.6k] 🖋️ Author: persephoneapple
🎵 Summary: Harry plans on proposing to Draco tonight, but it takes a Prophet article and a conversation between Draco and Pansy to realise how much Draco means to him.
📻 When the remembering is done [E, 24.8k] 🖋️ Author: Sassy3 / @sassy-sassy3
🎵 Summary: “–and we’ll make sure that you can stay at home as long as possible before it will be too hard to manage,” Potter finished. Draco could only blink, trying to make sense of the words he had heard before and after he zoned out. He cleared his throat before speaking. “I’m sorry, Potter. Why wouldn’t she be able to live at home?” Draco Malfoy leads a quiet life. Sure, he doesn’t really like his job, and he never imagined he’d have to move back in with his parents at the manor, but at least he has his lovely son Scorpius to dote on. The only problem is that it gets a bit lonely. But when his mother starts behaving strange and forgetful, he finds himself in need of help from the one person he never reconciled with after the war.
📻 If you smile at me again, I may do something stupid [M, 6.9k] 🖋️ Author: @emilattes
🎵 Summary: Draco made his peace with Harry Potter and their failed relationship two years ago. He's happy with his new boyfriend, but when Harry becomes the man Draco needed him to be, he finds it's much harder to ignore their history.
📻 smoke break [E, 4.3k] 🖋️ Author: saltwatergarden / @talkingtravesties
🎵 Summary: The first few times, they hovered a bit; Draco offered wine and they sat there and sipped and made small talk, until finally Potter would snap and say, “this is stupid,” and reach out to pull Draco into a kiss. After a while, they fell into a rhythm. Sometimes Potter would be in a rush, and he’d just throw himself at Draco the second he was through the door. Other times, he seemed intent on torturing Draco with his slow and teasing kisses. Potter rarely stayed the night, typically Flooing home after they were done, and they never went out, or, for that matter, met at Potter’s place. Draco was very aware of what he was to Potter—a convenience—and despite his pride, he accepted it, because he knew it was the most he was ever going to get from Potter, and far more than he deserved.
📻 4th Day of the New Show [M, 6.2k] 🖋️ Author: @meandminniemcg
🎵 Summary: Lucius, freshly released from Azkaban, shows up at Draco's show. And Harry has been nervous all day. How does Draco handle the situation?
📻 I Want More? [E, 10.7k] 🖋️ Author: @drarryismymuse
🎵 Summary: Draco had successfully avoided British wizarding society for eight years, until necessity drove him to attend a swanky Ministry event. A chance encounter at that event sparks a passionate affair that just might change the course of Draco’s entire life.
📻 Until It All Comes Undone [E, 38.5k] 🖋️ Author: @mystickitten42
🎵 Summary: Following his confrontation with Voldemort, Harry returns from King’s Cross Station completely changed. He wakes up at Privet Drive with no memory of his past, the war or magic. Petunia, widowed and suffering from empty nest syndrome, is only too happy to turn Harry into Dudley 2.0. But something’s not quite right. Plagued by recurring nightmares, Harry can’t help but feel something is missing. A bottle of his cousin’s LSD helps him to forget his worries… Magic may not be real, but the hallucinations and the hot blond he meets all feel pretty magical to Harry. Having turned his back on his family, Draco is determined to start over and do the right thing. But he’s never made good decisions when it comes to Harry Potter. When Potter—presumed dead, but very much alive—unexpectedly returns, Draco will do anything for a second chance. Even if it means pretending not to know who he is…
📻 When the Day Met the Night [M, 5.7k] 🖋️ Author: Albuss
🎵 Summary: When the day met the night, all was golden in the sky. In the middle of summer. The Battle of Hogwarts is through, and Harry, somehow, isn't. Draco isn't either. In rebellion against all they have endured, the two embark on a summer of adventure, seeking an ember of hope in the darkness. What they find is unforgettable.
📻 Born to Drown [M, 3.2k] 🖋️ Author: @floydig
🎵 Summary: Draco drives a Knight Bus in the slums of Paris. Sometimes his passengers remind him of Harry. But Harry left years ago. Now, Harry is married to Ginny, and Draco drives a bus. You laugh. “Sorry, I don't know why I’m laughing. It’s really not funny—your dad being dead and shrivelled.” “Fuck off.” I turn to face you. Your eyes are red, your pupils almost blown. Your skin is grey-tinged and sallow, and you're not the one who’s dead. “Merlin, Potter,” I say, hoarse. “How much bloody Dreamless did you shoot up this time?” “Enough for me to live.” You grin wide. “You want me to be alive, don’t you?” Your raw-bitten lips, your chipped teeth, your fucking mouth. I hate all of them, but really I don’t.
📻 Stop And Stare [T, 36.5k] 🖋️ Author: devilishcries
🎵 Summary: After surviving your everyday war-torn childhood, Harry had found a constant rhythm to his life. The thing is, he didn't quite like it. It was repetitive, dull, and he badly wanted to switch it up. So, when he stumbled upon Draco Malfoy on the verge of committing arson in a muggle library, he proposed a deal neither could refuse. (Well, Malfoy was desperately trying to refuse it. But that wasn't the point!) What he failed to factor in was how pretty Malfoy's hands were. One thing led to another, and suddenly, he was obsessed with the idea of holding them.

🎵 Summary: Harry and Draco fall into a spring that allows them to enter into each other’s dreams - but Harry doesn’t quite understand what’s happening, not at first. Why does he keep seeing Draco having kinky sex with a dream version of Harry? And furthermore, why does he like it? Morpheus’ tail twitched irritably. “I warned you away from the poppies. The blame lies with you.” “Me? Potter’s to blame for this, he’s the one who dragged me out to this miserable -” “You would do well not to insult the home of those whom you ask for help,” said Morpheus coolly, though Harry saw a bit of detached amusement in his expression. Malfoy had no self awareness. It’s adorable how stupid he is, Harry thought, and then caught himself thinking Malfoy was adorable and became deeply troubled. “I’m…” Malfoy closed his eyes and gritted his teeth. “Sorry. Please - I need advice. I can’t keep him out of my dreams.”

🎵 Summary: It's a couple of years after the war, and Harry's bored of models now, the same way he's bored of Ron's constant nagging, bored of his Weasley monogram knitwear, bored of the same fucking grin that greets him when he hands his fire-truck red Bugatti over to the valet every night. He wants to find—well, he isn't sure what he wants. Anything but models. Harry is in the mood for...messy. And Draco Malfoy's looking like a walking disaster in the making.

🎵 Summary: Harry shudders, fingertips pulsing against Draco’s thighs. He can feel the sharp, metal edge of Harry’s wedding band digging into his flesh, knows he’ll have a bruise there in the morning, a small imperfection that only he’d be able to see. It’s one of the only marks he’ll vanish, not wanting to think about its implications; the rest he’ll keep for himself. Slowly, Harry relaxes, shoulders sinking, breaths changing their cadence to a new tempo. Resigned, surrendered to this dance they do.

And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what’s he doing right, that Harry isn’t? Because things don’t really change, do they? And if Harry can’t be happy, he’ll settle for a good night’s sleep, some posh antiques, and the opportunity to find out what Malfoy has been up to for all these years. And that’s what starts it all.

Let's start with a history. I grew up in BC. Loved the ocean. Wanted to be a marine biologist. The whole 9 yards. But, life didn't turn out that way. Instead, just before my 21st birthday, I ended up facing homelessness and moved to Ontario, hoping to find more job prospects. Well, I found that, plus a husband (eventually). We did some post secondary education, had 4 boys, and then moved to Montreal for work. Never thought I'd end up in Quebec. Wish I never had. I'll just say it wasn't good for any of us and leave it at that. Anyway, in October 2019 we took a road trip to see the Maritimes. We'd never been there before and since we were homeschooling we thought we'd go off-season and avoid the crowds. Best decision ever. It. Was. Gorgeous. The leaves were all changing colour but hadnt started falling yet, so every drive we took (and there was a lot of driving. We saw as much as we could over just one week.) was absolutely breathtaking.

Tumblr media
Back in Montreal, we had to decide between moving in 2020, or trying for one more baby (hopefully a girl this time). I didn't want to move while pregnant (BTDT) and didn't want to put off a baby until I was nearly 40, so we decided baby first, then move. Well, Christmas morning we got the good news that I was pregnant already. And then the pandemic hit. So, we hid in our home, not knowing what covid would do to a pregnant woman or the baby, and then after giving birth (to our 5th boy) trying to keep him safe from everything.
Tumblr media
We had a deadline though. Homeschooling in Quebec was getting harder and harder as the government put pressure on parents to educate their children the "right" way (i.e. their way. No room for change if your children have different interests, strengths, disabilities, etc). Even in the pandemic, with children being forced to go to school in buildings with failing air systems and very little options for kids with compromised immune systems or high risk family members at home, the government still kept putting more pressure than ever on us. I knew that in the 2021-2022 school year, they would be implementing mandatory exams (ensuring we followed their curriculum to the letter), so we needed to move before then. And if we could move before June 15, 2021 then I wouldn't have to submit the year end reports (which can be dozens of pages long for each child, and I had 3 to report for, while taking care of a newborn). I looked at the Ontario housing market and knew immediately it was still out of our league. But the Maritimes? That we could do. I got a realtor, a mortgage specialist, and started searching. We found an amazing home and put in an offer, but it was priced to be very competitive and we lost out. But the next home we put an offer on was accepted! We had our home! And then Nova Scotia closed its borders a few days later. Ugh. Luckily we didn't have to change our closing date, and we were able to get into our new home on time, after a 15 hour drive with our 5 kids and 3 cats piled into the back with as much stuff as we could fit in. (The moving truck came a couple days before so we had enough stuff to keep us going without our possessions.)
Tumblr media
So, now we're here! We finished our quarantine and have started to do a little exploring. And I've started to do some redecorating. I thought some people might be interested in the before and after, or the process,so I'm here. I hope you get something out of it 😊
And since I can't figure out how to delete pictures from here yet, here's some of the before!

Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne and Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe on Krewe du Kanaval
Much of the connection between Haitian and New Orleans culture has been lost to history, but for Haitian-Canadian Régine Chassagne of Arcade Fire and Ben Jaffe of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, they’ve provided fertile ground for their Krewe du Kanaval Mardis Gras parade and ball. The idea for Krewe started when Chassagne and her husband/bandmate Win Butler took the members of Perservation Hall on a trip to Haiti back in 2015. Chassagne’s family had fled Haiti during the brutal reign of Françcois Duvalier and have been returning to Haiti regularly since the band first played there in 2004, raising money for a local hospital. In 2005, they began working with Partners in Health and Kampe, continuing their efforts after the earthquake which devastated the country in 2010.
Both Arcade Fire and Preservation Hall will play again for the festival’s third and biggest year on Feb. 14 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong Park, along with guests Michael Brun, Jillionaire, Lakou Mizik, Pierre Kwenders and more. I spoke with both Chassagne and Jaffe about why they created Krewe du Kanaval and what we can expect from this year’s festivities.
Paste: To start out, can you talk a little bit about why a Haitian-themed festival in New Orleans? Can you talk a little bit about the connection between Haiti and the city and what made you want to launch the Krewe du Karnival?
Ben Jaffe: So I’m going to let Régine tackle that because she’s, she’s the one responsible for introducing me to Haiti and sort of beginning my, my discovery journey.
Régine Chassagne: So first of all, I just want to say it’s not just Haitian-themed; it’s a reality. I grew up in Montreal, and my family is from Haiti—all of it. So I grew up speaking French, and I also grew up around Haitian Creole and more of a Caribbean culture. And when I visited New Orleans, every time we would stop by playing, something was just like, ‘What is this place?’ This place has something different that completely felt really familiar to me. Even though it was this different, it was kind of like similar cultural components—but with a different combo of the French and a little bit of Spanish and the Creole. I recognize it, and it really attracted me to the city. It’s kind of like a cousin universe—it’s kind of an oldest connection that come from this.
Jaffe: I didn’t grow up in the typical community in New Orleans. We were very blessed to have so much music, and we really value community here. After I visited Cuba and visited Haiti, I’ve really begun to understand more deeply the source of the things that I appreciate so much about New Orleans. Community isn’t just something you talk about or try to define. It’s actually a thing, you know? It’s actually a neighborhood and actually people that you grew up with. It’s the great grandmother, the great grandfather. It’s the priest and the minister of the church. It’s the person who runs the little grocery store, the member of the social aid and pleasure club, the musician, the Mardi Gras Indian. It’s the Neville Brothers. It’s all of these people that make up this incredible city. And then within the city, there are these little micro-communities of people. And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to have a deeper appreciation for that and understand how precious and sacred and rare that is. And it’s something that I was able to experience, and the whole Preservation Hall band was able to go there and actually feel sort of like this big, big family coming together—like a reunion of families.
Chassagne: That’s true. It feels like that.
Jaffe: At one time there was more of a fluid back-and-forth between Haiti and New Orleans and other communities in the Caribbean just because of our trade and because of New Orleans’ very important geographic location. We are the first city at the mouth of the Mississippi. We were the gateway to the Americas from the Caribbean. Everything coming into the country had to come through New Orleans. Coffee, sugar, even—and it’s sad to even talk about it—but humans, as well, coming into this country and leaving the country. All of our exports and cotton, coffee and sugar, were coming out of the country. It’s just interesting that the connection was in some ways more realized 200 years ago. And over the centuries we’ve, we’ve sort of lost a little bit of that. But its fingerprint and DNA is still here.
Paste: Yeah. We’ve seen a huge influx of Haitians into New Orleans over the course of the last couple of hundred years. Both places have also suffered two of the most devastating natural disasters of this century. Haiti just marked 10 years since the earthquake and the country is still suffering from its efforts. What do you see of the differences in the way those two places have bounced back and what do you see as the biggest needs that still remain in Haiti?
Chassagne: Those are gigantic questions. I will speak for what I know—the work that’s being done by organizations like Partners in Health and Kanpe, who are working in the Central Plateau. So I think the earthquake revealed the fragility of the system, the non-system. It’s really hard to build on a foundation when there’s no system like the government, because it was very weak or fragile. When NGOs perpetuate this fragility by bypassing the official infrastructure even as weak as it is, it’s really a short-term solution because you can’t just run a country on NGOs. People need their own infrastructure. So I think we’ll get there. The people on the ground I know are so extremely dedicated but don’t often get the highlights. It’s mostly the outsiders that get all the talk. Anyway, I could go on and on. I don’t want to dwell on that, but I really believe NGOs need to look at themselves. And I’m always talking to myself because to me it’s really important to make sure that we do a good job. And if it’s not working, we have to ask ourselves, ‘Why?”
Paste: I want to get into the Karnival itself, but I wanted to ask one about your family’s immigration from Haiti. It was out of necessity due to the [François] Duvalier’s violent reign. I don’t want to compare, but there have been extra-judicial killings recently that had been linked to the government. How has your history affected your relationship with Haiti and your experiences going back there and your heart for the country? I know you guys have done a lot to try to raise awareness just do good in the country.
Chassagne: Well for me it’s two things. It’s the livelihood. I care about the livelihood of people in Haiti and the opportunities for amazing people to get great things done because there’s so much talent in Haiti, that it’s unbelievable. So that, and also the cultural aspect, which is really important for me because, even as a daughter of immigrants, I think it does stipulate a lot of different people who are sons and daughters of immigrants. It is a thing where when you’ve arrived in a new country, parents feel like they have to negate or deny their whole culture. That they have to like dissolve it so they can blend in. And so they put that on their children as well.
I think it’s still really cool to be adaptable to a new place where you arrived, of course, but that shouldn’t be accompanied by a shame of what you were like, you know? And that the culture that you have—it’s not one culture or the other. It’s like one on top of the other. So you can speak French and English and Spanish and Creole and you’re not one or the other. You’re one. And the other. So it’s a plus to me that you have access to all the universes. It’s a real value because I want to fight that sense of having to be or feel “less than” by these layers that you have. But on the contrary, you shouldn’t feel “less than” but feel even richer for having all these layers for yourself. Haitian culture has been often just completely discarded, and it’s so sophisticated and it’s a diamond in the rough. And it’s given so much to American culture, and people don’t even know about it. So yeah, I’m always trying to put it forward everywhere I go.
Paste: That’s great. And Ben, can you talk about that first Preservation Hall trip to Haiti and what that was like?
Jaffe: Yeah, I went down with Win [Butler] and Régine and a member of our foundation on sort of a research visit to understand more about the work that Kampe does and just to understand the whole landscape. When we were down there, Régine introduced me to the gentleman who had the band called RAM, Richard Morse. And immediately there was a brotherhood there. He’s doing very similar things in his community that are also being done in New Orleans, like what Preservation Hall does, just on a different scale and with different obstacles. That just grew into me thinking, “Oh my gosh, this is part of the Preservation Hall journey—part of the journey of the members of the band. And part of what I do is to create this dialogue—the moment where the band, the members of my band can go learn something about themselves and continue to grow as musicians. And that’s really impactful when you’re going into a community, like you’re going into Cuba or you’re going to Brazil or Colombia or Mexico. And this trip it was to Haiti, and I don’t even know when the last time a band from New Orleans has been to Haiti. The Preservation Hall band had never been. It may have been hundreds of years since a New Orleans band has been there. I’ve never heard anybody in New Orleans, in my community of musicians, ever speak about Haiti. They speak about it, but we think about it in terms of our connection to voodoo or the Mardi Gras Indian tradition or the jazz tradition and the jazz processions that take place at funerals.
The experience was incredible for the band members. I remember just preparing the guys for the trip and some of the obstacles that we were going to face just in terms of just the the physical challenges of being there and things being outside of our normal comfort zone as a band. But you know, in New Orleans, that’s something you’re kind of prepared for because of the way that we grow up playing in parades and things being played without electricity and you know, like, “Hey, when does the parade start?” “I don’t know, when everybody gets there.” That kind of attitude lends itself to the way we grew up in new Orleans.
And I remember one of the experiences that I loved was just watching from the porch of this old Colonial hotel that we were staying in that was built into the side of a mountain that was a couple hundred years old and watching two of the members of my band watching these the young dancers work on a piece based on sort of traditional voodoo rhythms and dances, and then just being almost like as if they were in watching this happen. They were that moved by just the experience of being in the community of the artists. And that was, that was really how we all felt.
I remember also our trombone player—his family had told him, “Look, you’re probably gonna run into some family members when you’re down there. Cause our families have Haitian roots.” And sure enough, here we are just kind of hanging out at this event that we helped produce at this incredible hotel, and nothing like this had ever really been done before. Bands from all over the country had come to those to perform. And he was backstage and he saw there’s a woman who looks just like his aunt, and he’s texting pictures to his mom. And she was like, “Oh yeah, that’s your aunt so-and-so.” “No mom, I’m in Haiti. This is not my aunt.” She’s like, “Oh that’s your aunt. That’s definitely your aunt.” And they come to find out that they’re all cousins. They’re all back in touch again. And it was that moment that you realize that we’re not even like one degree of separation musically or culturally from Haiti. It’s just something that was cut off for economic reason and political reasons—the same way we were cut off from a lot of our African roots in New Orleans. And this is probably a step in that direction to learn more about that piece of us as well.
Paste: That’s fantastic. It sounds like this was a long overdue connection that needed to happen. So can you talk a little bit about the Krewe du Karnival and the ongoing way that’s kind of reviving that connection between New Orleans and Haiti?
Jaffe: I guess it’s important to understand a little bit about like what a krewe is in New Orleans. It goes back to the beginning of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. And it was these organizations that still today are organizations—whether it’s a neighborhood organization or a political organization or a group of friends or business people who get together and form a club. Some krewes have their own clubhouse, and they have events throughout the year. So we wanted to create something that reflected our Orleans experience, something that’s brought together people from the entire city, not just one particular area. And also open up our membership to like-minded people worldwide. We have members from all over the world who come in for Kanaval. So that was really the idea. And we wanted to create something that reflected all of the things that we love about New Orleans and Haiti. The idea of dancing down the street. That’s something that I thought was very particular to New Orleans, but then I went to Haiti and I’m like, “Oh wow, they have that here too.” In Haiti, they call it Rara. In New Orleans, it’s the second line. In both places, those are sacred traditions. In New Orleans that’s a sacred African-American tradition. But it’s where a band marches down the street, accompanied by a social aid and pleasure club, which are primarily African-American neighborhood organizations followed by dancers. And it’s a community, and it’s amazing. It’s the most punk rock thing you can imagine. And then when I went to Haiti to experience a Rara, it was like being in a mosh pit—not in terms of like running around pushing and punching people, but in terms of like of just that release of energy being instant, just calm music and the vibration of the moment. To actually be on the street dancing with a band moving down the street is incredible.
Paste: Let’s talk about this year’s Kanaval. What are each of you most looking forward to for this this third version here?
Jaffe: Well, the two things that stick out this year for me—and I’m going to let Régine talk about like all the choreography and the music of the dance—but the few things that really mean something to me this year is we are going to be holding our ball. So each Mardi Gras parade and each crew has a ball to celebrate their crew. And this year our ball is going to be in the Mahalia Jackson Theater in Armstrong Park, which is adjacent to Congo square, just outside the French Quarter, sort of nestled between the French Quarter and Treme, which is the oldest African-American neighborhood in the country. So that’s really beautiful to me that we’re putting life back into this underutilized and amazing theater in this underutilized park and bringing life back into it. And I’m really proud that we’re doing that this year. And I’m also really excited that this year we’re going to be parading along a major parade route, which in New Orleans is straight down St. Charles Avenue. And that’s an amazing achievement. A lot of organizations don’t get to that point where they actually get permitted to march down St. Charles Avenue. And that’s really a badge of honor. Getting to down St. Charles Avenue and to represent the colors that we represent and the principles that we represent is really beautiful. And I mean Régine could talk about the music and the dance because Arcade Fire is going to be performing and Lakou Mizik from Haiti is going to be performing, Jillionaire, Michael Brun, Pierre Kwenders, Windows 98, Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This year our queen is Mia X, who is a legendary figure in New Orleans bounce, part of the No Limit family. And especially since we just lost a 5th Ward Weebie, there’s like a spotlight on New Orleans bounce. And the bounce community in New Orleans is as important as our jazz community.
Paste: Régine, how about you? What are you looking forward to this year?
Chassagne: Well, Sunday was the actual anniversary of the earthquake. And we had a first big proper dance rehearsal. And there’s a dancer friend who taught us some moves. And it was really moving. We had a moment and she spoke about the earthquake. That plus the fact that we lost one of our master drummers—Francois San Damas Louis, who used to lead the Rara of the previous years. And I don’t know, for me, it really moves me to see these Haitian dance being able to infiltrate the mainstream and Haitian culture pushing through and actually bringing it to mainstream is a big deal. We’re not in Haiti, so it’s not super traditional. But just to be able to recognize that and just add that the spotlight is on this really special community—I’m really, really, really excited about that.
Paste: Oh, well, it sounds like an amazing event and I wish you both the best this year. One of these years I’ve got to get down for one of these. It sounds amazing.
Chassagne: Yeah. Yeah. It’s good for the soul.

Olympic ice-dance champions Virtue and Moir: 'We’re so proud of our relationship'
June 18, 2019
The Canadian gold medallists talk to Eoin O’Callaghan about winning gold, maintaining a professional relationship and ignoring fan fiction

There’s a guy at a bar nursing a drink. He looks up and catches the eye of a girl nearby. They share a knowing glance. And that’s the moment. It’s a scene from a litany of TV shows and films. But, it’s also the story of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s rebirth. And given the hopelessly romantic and cinematic dimension to their partnership, the story fits perfectly.
“We were on a charity trip to Scotland [in 2015] and they were showing an Olympic video,” Moir remembers. “I looked over at Tessa. We kind of have our own language. And I was like, ‘We’re going to do one more Olympics, aren’t we?’ And she was like, ‘Oh, yeah’. I turned around to the bartender, ordered three more beers and just thought, ‘Okay, here we go’”.
At the time, the celebrated Canadian ice-dance duo were on a break. Embittered and irritated with skating, they’d stepped away from competing and were mulling their next move. After a period of unprecedented success between 2010 and 2012, things shifted substantially prior to the Winter Olympics in Sochi. The entire experience, which culminated in a bitterly disappointing silver medal, was clouded by a simmering rift with coach Marina Zoueva and newspaper claims that the ice-dance result had been fixed by American and Russian judges.
It was supposed to be Virtue and Moir’s perfect swansong but instead they headed into presumed retirement full of anger, frustration and resentment. Moir, in particular, was disillusioned by all of it.
“I was just kind of sour with the sport,” he says. “I didn’t want anything to do with it. I went into a period of excessive partying and doing anything that wasn’t figure skating, really. I went and built a house with my brother. I shut the whole world out and shut everything down.”
But the break – regardless of the emotions that came with it – was badly needed. “Gaining the perspective to reflect and reassess was paramount,” Virtue says.
After discussing a comeback in more detail, they earmarked former Canadian ice-dancers Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon as coaches and were eager to move to Montreal and get things started. But during their first conversation, Lauzon wanted them to explain their motivation for returning. It was a pre-requisite, he told them.
“That floored us,” Moir says. “We couldn’t get out of it by just saying, ‘We want to win.’ He just said, ‘Well, that might not be enough. You need more than that if you want to come to our school.’ It came down to the fact that we just felt we had more to give.”
In a new place and with a new coaching team, they were determined to push boundaries and rediscover the sport.
“We weren’t conforming to any one thing,” Virtue says. “We lost this sense of trying to appease everyone else. We were more secure in who we were as people and athletes. We were more secure in what we stood for, what we valued and the art we wanted to create. I always loved skating but you can get hardened by it and it’s discouraging and disheartening. You can lose that spark. Montreal ignited it again.”
In September 2016, they stepped into a rink in the Montreal borough of Pierrefonds and competed for the first time in two-and-a-half years at the Skate Canada Autumn Classic. The short dance was an electric, sensual tribute to Prince. Paired with the tenderness and contemporary slant of their free dance, it was a magnetic and thrilling package.
Even so, it seemed a long shot that they would get the better of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, the French duo who were back-to-back world champions and unbeaten in two years. So, it was astonishing when Virtue and Moir ended the year on top of the Grand Prix podium for the first time in their careers and followed that up with a World Championship gold in 2017.
Tumblr media

“I don’t think people truly understand how difficult that is,” Moir says. “Three years is a long time. The game had evolved. And we’re back in the arena, with the bright lights and everyone’s faces looking back at us again. We did everything we could to prepare but there were a lot of tough steps. The goal was to not be our old selves. We knew we made a mistake in 2014. We didn’t pick music that was dear to our hearts and weren’t personally invested in a program. We vowed to never do that again.”
The new era was exciting but still left Virtue slightly underwhelmed. She was expecting something bigger, more explosive.
“I thought we’d have this Ziggy Stardust moment,” she says. “‘Representing Canada, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’ and the whole crowd would turn and gasp and say, ‘Who? Who’s that blonde girl? That’s not Tessa.’ I thought we would totally reinvent ourselves. But it was finding the balance. ‘Are we doing things differently just to be different or to be better?’ And that was a constant dialogue between us.”
For Moir, the entire process became a safe harbour as he navigated a particularly difficult period.
“2017 was probably one of the hardest years of my life,” he admits. “There were a lot of personal struggles. I lost some very important people. I had a best friend and then a grandfather pass away. Through it all, skating became an anchor. I used to think of it as a job. Now it was getting me through and giving me hope. Through all the heartache, it seemed worth it. Heading into the Olympic season, we were ready for almost anything.”
In the build-up to Pyeongchang, they were consistently behind Papadakis and Cizeron, particularly in the free dance. So, they dramatically altered their sombre Moulin Rouge routine to make it more Olympic-friendly.
“We changed about two minutes of our program entirely,” Virtue says. “We listened to people for eight years telling us we needed a big ending, people on their feet and the music to reach this massive crescendo. That’s the Olympic moment people want. Once we were able to find that, it soared and began to take shape.”
It worked.
The subsequent free dance performance sits alongside Torvill and Dean’s 1984 Bolero as the greatest ice-dance moment in history. Those four spellbinding minutes were not only enough to ensure astounding and unlikely Olympic golds for the pair but to also define Virtue and Moir’s legacy.
“I had never felt momentum during a performance before,” Virtue says. “We felt flow in Vancouver [when they won gold in 2010] and we chased that feeling for eight years. I went into the penultimate lift in Pyeongchang and I got chills because I felt the energy and electricity in the building shift.”
A different kind of momentum had been growing for a while too.
Unlike their French rivals, Virtue and Moir took part in the team figure skating event a week earlier and quickly became viral sensations. In front of a global audience, the intensity of their chemistry, their innate closeness and the suggestiveness of certain choreography whipped new-found fans into a frenzy, especially across social media. When they found out Virtue and Moir were not involved in a romantic relationship, they didn’t really accept it. Instead, they started to fantasize.
There are dark corners of the digital sphere devoted to them, including some intense fan fiction. The disciples – and there are a lot of them – obsess over every look and every caress. “It’s probably healthier to avoid it,” Virtue says.
But that’s easier said than done. Last year, Moir spoke eloquently about the impact his unique athletic setup had on his personal life and how some partners found it difficult to properly understand his dynamic with Virtue. Before the Olympics, he was already daydreaming about what was on the other side. It’s why he’s so ready to move on to a new post-skating chapter and focus on things he spent so long sacrificing.
“I was ready for that transition,” he says. “It was always skating first and I was finally at a point in my life where I could be a contributing member of my family and actually search for a life partner.”
Their relationship is a curious thing. When I ask Virtue to define it, she takes a deep breath. “We’re the worst at answering this question”, she begins. “I wish we could help ourselves and everyone else.”
She speaks uninterrupted for a few minutes. It’s essentially a meandering run-on sentence. Then she apologizes profusely for not supplying the right answer. But, of course, she had done. It’s why the moment of their eyes meeting in Scotland explains so much of their story. Words are limiting and what Virtue and Moir have goes far beyond that, almost existing in the abstract.
“We were made for each other, in a work relationship,” Moir says. “There’s real love there. We’re so proud of the business relationship we have. And that’s the story we want to tell more than anything. Judging by my girlfriend’s Twitter, I think fans are disappointed a little bit that we’re not a couple but we have a very amazing, unique relationship that hopefully young people can look at and think, ‘Wow, that should be inspirational in its own right’”.
When they stood on the podium immediately after their Olympic victory, Virtue – normally so poised – uncharacteristically welled up. “It was seeing 20 years flash in front of me,” she says. Her voice cracks so she nervously laughs to cover the lump in her throat.
“The little seven and nine-year-old kids who got together, who didn’t speak and who just skated around a rink holding hands. On the world’s biggest stage, with all of that pressure, in that very moment ... I was just very proud of Scott. It’s funny. We both have this thing where it’s hard for us to acknowledge our own success but we’re able to see it in each other.”
Currently, there’s an adjustment period. It’s not about the Olympics anymore. There are touring shows to produce and various other projects to plan for. They both admit that fully appreciating what they have and what they’ve gone through together is something that will only come much later.
For Moir, he’s still struggling to wrap his head around the last year and a half. “I don’t know how to explain it and I don’t think I even have a proper perspective on it yet,” he says. “It seems like it was a fairytale when I look back now.”

📻🎶 H/D Wireless 2021 - Weekly Wrap-up #2
The second week of posting has come to an end! What even is time? Nothing to be worried about once you start catching up with our timeless classics from this week! Watch our two favourite human catastrophes fall in love, get back together, dress up with Teddy, work together, get over their past and so much more in 14 different ways, all created by our amazing participants. As always you can listen to the prompted songs for the works we post on two playlists:
Click here for Spotify (many thanks to @evaeleanor for helping us out there)
And here for YouTube
Now please enjoy our 2 artpieces, 11 fics and the collab we posted this week:
🎶 H/D Wireless Art 🎶
📻 Don't care what they say (I would be stupid to be not on it)
🎵 Summary: Harry finally has a chance with Draco and he's not gonna let it go.
📻 Start Over Again
🎵 Summary: Do you feel like a chainstore? Or in which one is Graham Coxon and one is Damon Albarn.
🎶 H/D Wireless Fic 🎶
📻 Alone Together
🎵 Summary: He felt like a spectre, roaming the treeless grounds, the deserted streets of Hogsmeade. It was only the train station—of course it was, Harry thinks—that harboured another sleepless soul that night. They were found as though they had been looking for one another; freezing to the ground at the sight of an unmistakable silhouette in the distance, before wordlessly meeting on the platform. They stood there, side by side, faces to the sky.
📻 Nothing Left to Burn
🎵 Summary: Over ten years after their fling crashed and burned, Harry runs into Draco and finds embers still burning bright. Sometimes your ex-lover is (metaphorically) dead. And sometimes it's summertime in Montreal and the past won't let go.
📻 The Isle of Discussion
🎵 Summary: Harry and Draco arrive at the shores of Loch Leven to record the magical history of the land. They’re friends now, but up there in the Highlands, amidst the trees and sky and that wild expanse of water their own past is more present than ever; a gap they still can’t bridge. Magic illuminates the truth, but it is Harry and Draco who have to speak it. Happily, it turns out that honesty is, in fact, the best policy.
📻 (You Should Have Been My) High School Lover
🎵 Summary: After years of carefully avoiding running into Harry Potter, Pansy tricks Draco into attending a party at Grimmauld Place. How is he supposed to deal with a very attractive Potter trying to talk to him?
📻 Both Hands
🎵 Summary: It’s been over a decade since Draco packed up his belongings and left, and Harry’s doing just fine. Really, he is. So when he spots the For Sale sign outside their old flat, he doesn’t think twice about arranging a viewing. Curiosity is only natural, right? And what harm can come from a quick trip down memory lane?
📻 His favourite piece of art
🎵 Summary: Six years after Malfoy had left, Harry suddenly spotted him on the dancefloor of a Muggle club in London. He couldn't let this opportunity slip…
📻 I'll Try to Keep the Walls From Falling Down
🎵 Summary: It’s OK. Love is only meant for some; Harry knows that. Besides, he wouldn’t want to risk this new, amazing friendship he has going on with Draco for anything in the world. Keeping his walls from falling down is the least he can do.
📻 Learn to Fly
🎵 Summary: Harry’s suffocating under all the expectations of the wizarding world, but he’s fascinated at Malfoy’s sudden ability to flaunt his true self to whoever cares to watch. And Harry? He might like to do something more than watch if he can ever get up the nerve.
📻 Restless Dreamer (Stay With Me)
🎵 Summary: At first, Draco thinks the common room is empty, but then he sees Potter sitting on the floor, back to the wall on the far side of the fireplace. His head is thrown back, exposing the brown column of his throat. The curl of his hair looks soft in the firelight. Potter’s glasses are off and there are tracks where tears have wet his cheeks. He looks naked in a way that stabs at Draco, right between the ribs where everything is already bruised.
📻 Letters From Home
🎵 Summary: Writing to each other is all that's getting them through this war.
📻 so lie to me tonight
🎵 Summary: Ginny thought it would be different, after.
🎶 H/D Wireless Art and Fic 🎶
📻 Oh, Sinnerman

Today's Walking Photos: Okay, you lucky people, now you finally get to see some photos from the city where I am currently located, at least for the next twelve hours or so – Montreal, Quebec! And so hey, why am I in Montreal? Well, it’s like this. My dear departed father had a younger brother whose name was Patrick McDougall; I was named after him, and my Uncle Pat lived much of his life in Montreal. Almost two weeks ago, Uncle Pat passed away. He’d been ill for a while and I’d hoped to see him before he passed, but it just wasn’t to be. So immediately after my Memphis trip I arranged to come straight here to spend time with his family and do some remembering and celebrating. Uncle Pat was an amazing man, a longtime announcer for CBC Radio, and he had so many other remarkable and endearing qualities. Happily my sister Kathryn was able to join me here too and we’ve had a great four days with our cousins and Pat’s wife, our Aunt Marie.
I know I’m playing fast and loose with the traditional Walking Photos format here, but today’s post contains photos taken during walks I took with my sister on Monday and Tuesday. Herewith are comments on the photos herein…
My cousin Annie’s place, where we are staying, is mere blocks from Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, which was built in 1976 and has a rather uneven history. But it seemed like the obvious destination for our walk on Monday, when it was about 3º Fahrenheit outside and even colder with wind chill. This is the ramp leading up to the main esplanade outside the stadium, and it looked juuuuuust treacherous enough for us to risk the ascent.
Here’s a view of the stadium from the esplanade level. That tower with all the cables holds up the roof, and is the 6th-tallest building in the entire city! But I’m hearing that the roof needs replacing if the stadium is going to be in any kind of shape to host the 2026 World Cup, which was decided in June 2018.
"Wet Floor!” warns the vividly-illustrated sign leading back down to the sidewalk after our stadium exploration.
I am deeply, abidingly in love with this vintage over-the-door sign for “Docteur E. Lamoureux.” Be sure to click this one for a larger view; it’s gorgeous. And those sconces! I wasn’t able to sleuth out how long ago Dr. Lamoureux was actually practicing on Ontario Street in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood we walked through, but I’d say it was quite some time ago.
During our stroll down Ontario Street, we also happened upon the Church of Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge-d'Hochelaga, a Roman Catholic church built in 1867. The original church burned down in 1921, but it was rebuilt using the original facade which had been recovered.
My sister Kathryn stands in front of the church doors, which sadly were locked.
A statue of the Virgin Mary, for whom the church is named.
A giant magnifying glass in a park we walked through. It’s no 1867-vintage church, but it’s pretty striking nonetheless.
Tomorrow I’m heading home – wow, I’ve been gone a while! – but I’ll have one more set of Montreal Walking Photos to post.

MONTREAL 2018 SANSAN MEET UP
Tumblr media
Last weekend something amazing happened. After being in the SanSan fandom since 2011 I finally got to meet some of the wonderful online friends I’ve made through the years!!!! 🙌🏻😁💕 I already knew that @maroucia @kimberlite8 and @mllekaren were cool and talented persons because of all our meta analysis of our favorite characters/pairing in the #FromPawnToPlayer threads at Westeros.org and LiveJournal, and because they’ve written some of the best fanfics out there (seriously, it’s mind blowing how GOOD they are!!!)...
But now, after spending two fantastic days with them all, I have to share with our beloved ever-growing fandom how fun these girls are in person!!! 😘😘😘😘
We met at a delicious restaurant in #Montreal on Friday night, and we all instantly clicked. I was a bit star struck to finally be meeting these authors whose works I’ve admired for years, but they were all so nice and we had so much in common and so many mutual memories that it took no time at all for us to start talking about everything! From our personal lives to movies, books, actors, trips we’ve made... and of course, Sansa, Sandor, SanSan and our thoughts on a lot of stuff regarding the books, GRRM and the show.
After dinner we hang out some more because the conversations were just so good, and we even had a GoT photo shoot! A wild night cosplaying the characters and even forming our own cover for a music album on a bear rug!
The following day we visited #OldMontreal. We went to #NotreDame Cathedral, to the Old Port, to a fantastic history museum and to another delicious restaurant. Oh and of course Sansa and Sandor accompanied us in our adventures! Those two couldn’t help it and just started kissing at the restaurant in the middle of our photo 😝💏 And yes, we saw SanSan refreneces everywhere- it’s surreal in the best of ways to hang around with people who get all your SanSan comments!
In the end it was a weekend I will treasure forever and I hope it’s the first of many to come! It really was pretty amazing to finally meet people you’ve known online for a while and who have SO many things in common with you!
@maroucia you not only are a great author, but a strong, admirable woman and the best tour guide ever!! Thank you for showing us around <3 *Lots of love*
@kimberlite8 you are the sweetest girl ever and an amazing writer!! It’s a privilege to be your friend. You are so thoughtful and kind <3 *Hugs*
@mllekaren It was an honor to meet you my fellow Latina! I hope you get to see Sophie Turner when she’s next in Montreal! Take a picture with her for me <3 *Xoxo*

Dear New York City,
You are incredible! I love your busy streets and young energetic crowd. You are simply vibrant of life just how I had imagined you (from the movies, Sex & the City shows, and the songs about you)! So many reasons to have a crush on you so where shall I start?
Butcher’s Daughter
Driving through Chinatown
Ok, here are some of my first impressions of you, NYC:
It is said of you that you are the entire world into one city. Could it be real? You have a platter full of food options! As you are being the hub of internationals and a known place for storied history, you satisfy anyone’s taste bud, I can’t make up my mind. How can I decide between a casual French bistro (Bagatelle, 1 Little West 12th St.), delicious house-made Italian pasta (La Sirena, 88 9th Ave.), Exotic Moroccan (Cafe Mogador, 101 Saint Marks Pl #1), spicy Korean (Kori Tribeca, 253 Church St.), fun cocktails and Mexican food (La Palapa, 77 St Marks Pl.), Barcelona-style tapas (Toro, 85 10th Ave.), German’s pretzels and beer (The Standard Biergarten, 848 Washington St. just outside of the Standard High Line Hotel and I’ll tell more later), Green Juice (Yep that’s also food trust me!) and far more as if I was in the mood for a health conscious Californian style (not just green juice) there is Dime (49 Canal St.). And let’s not omit American sandwiches (Tiny’s & the Bar Upstairs, 135 W Broadway), and comfort food made of shakes, fries and burgers (Bill’s Bar & Burgers, 16 W 51st St.). There is also the Michelin starred Chef Gunter Seeger at Gunter Seerger NY (641 Hudson St.) and for the gluten free folks there is Friedman’s Lunch (75 9th Ave. at the Chelsea Market which I’ll speak more about in this post). Alas, due to my devoted ramen international tour mission, my friend and I set our minds towards Ippudo Ramen (65 Fourth Ave.) as soon as we set our feet on you.

Shook off the night away at Le Bain (848 Washington St.), the penthouse club and roof top bar with an outstanding sweeping city and river view located at the Standard High Line hotel. You blew us away! The vibe was electric between the sparkly giant disco ball, the Afro kinetics music, the sweaty dance moves, with the sticky cranberry vodka on my hand. I’ll remember this moment for a while 🙂 Not to mention our pre-game with gin-based drinks at this speakeasy bar Bathtub Gin that is disguised with a front panel as a regular coffee shop. How dare you tricked us!! Fortunately a friendly local had mercy and pointed the place out to us. Piouf don’t you know I have the fear of missing out syndromes!!

The Maritime Hotel (363 W 16th St.) is one of your best places to spend the night in my opinion; friendly, quirky (how I personally like it) and cozy. Located right in the center of the Meatpacking District. This 24-hour neighborhood is found on the far west side of Manhattan and is bordered by Chelsea to the north and the West Village towards downtown. It’s a formidable plant for fashion and graphic designers, architects, artists, restaurateurs, stylists and even corporate headquarters. I enjoyed staying at this hotel in that unique style, it has a nautical-themed landmark with the signature view porthole windows and how I love the white and blue tiles at the restaurant bar and the outdoor terraces seemed just perfect for spring time. In the morning a modest continental breakfast was served at the hotel restaurant so I grabbed myself a quick bite of the bagel with some flavorful orange spread, a mini pain au chocolat, a hard boiled egg, a cup of black coffee and a fresh squeeze glass of OJ. I love the serene atmosphere there with plenty of sun rays through the large windows illuminating the brass surfaced pending lamps.

You are so walkable in lower Manhattan and it was a great way to see your beauty (your wall graffitis, your modern architectures, your red bricked walls, your apartment stair cases, your lively people, and your multi-culture). But if I didn’t care for strolling around in the cold, then there was the world known yellow cab which was very affordable too! Besides the hotel’s cool white-tiled exterior, I can find within a short walking distance anything ranging from roof top night clubs around the corner, espresso bars, bakeries, as well as street food stands (one in the front of the hotel), yummy late night pizzas (Brunetti Pizza, 626 Hudson St.) (especially required after too much drinks at 4 am), and have I already mentioned great restaurants and bars?!

The Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave.) to me is where anything can happen and is only a block away from the hotel. You are spontaneous like that! If I ever get too lazy to walk out there into town and/or there is a snow storm alert coming, this covered venue is very special! One is expected to find anything ranging from espresso bar, pastries and freshly baked bread. A crave for fresh oysters there is The Lobster Place!! There, it’s a retail fish market with omakase sushi bar but also a raw bar where people can order and eat at the counter nearby the living seashells. There is even a German wurst place!! There are plenty of cool shops for gifts giving. I love this market!

Sight seeing to me is so boring but we strolled around town and set our sight towards The Flatiron Building then marched towards the Empire State Building. I got remotely distracted by the Museum of Sex and ought to call out Grant on this! Our last Vegas trip during thanksgiving holiday failed on us in finding adult shows for some sort of sex Ed haha I’ll skip the details there 😉 but anyone can read this post here! The Empire State Building was incredibly crowded (uncool!!) so we evidently ditched the queue and headed out towards the world known Times Square. Bright lights, giant billboards and honking everywhere! It was to say the least chaotic. Gotta get away now! Who really hangs out in Times Square aside from catching a Broadway show or… yeah tourists!!

The Museum of Sex, was it really a distraction?! or an attraction? Can you tell me 😉
If anyone needed a breath of fresh air when the concrete walk way and the stinging sound of sirens and honking felt suffocating and exhausting, there is fun and relaxation in strolling in your parks. Aside from the obvious green area of Central Park, I loved the Brooklyn Bridge Park where my friend and I got to have a humble picnic; with the magical view over Manhattan in the dark contrast of what you do best which is to gleam lights and inspire us with your beauty. We hopped on a yellow cab and asked to go to Pier 11. I had the idea of getting on a ferry to have a good gaze at the scintillant Brooklyn Bridge by the night. My friend and I cheered with red wine in plastic cups (lack of sophistication here, not me!) set ourselves up on a butt- frozen stairwell of the Brooklyn Bridge Park. We had some crackers dipped in olive paste and some (unidentifiable) cheese. Despite the blazing cold where my fingers and toes stopped responding to my commands, I very much enjoyed taking you in for a brief and calm sudden moment.

After filling our stomach at Mr. Tuka Ramen (170 Allen St.), we needed to walk it off a bit right so we headed towards world renown Comedy Cellar to test your sense of humor. Are you that funny? Unfortunately you are ever so crowded so we again ditched the queue and got some late drinks at the hotel. I served my friend some of the ice wine I got from my trip to Montreal the weekend before. It was so sweet but so tasty.

More sight seeing followed on our last day photographing the one World Trade Center and the memorial site, stopped by Wall Street to find the Charging Bull and the Fearless Girl. Finally walked towards the Battery Park to have a peak at the Statue of Liberty from a far distance. But on our way to Sunday Brunch, not Egg Shop,151 Elizabeth St.), not the Butcher’s Daughter (19 Kenmare St.) (the queue estimated to be 1 hour waiting time so no thanks!!) got a green juice (must have Matcha Fizz made of matcha, fresh lime, honey and rosemary ) at the Cafe Integral (149 Elizabeth St.) and amazing classic Persian food instead (Ravagh Persian Grill, 125 1st Ave.). On our way there, I got to see life through Greenwich village. Kids playing at the playground and youngsters shooting hoops. And other people brunching too. The Persian grill was phenomenal! I’d recommend to anyone! And finally time was up!

New York City Dear New York City, You are incredible! I love your busy streets and young energetic crowd. You are simply vibrant of life just how I had imagined you (from the movies, Sex & the City shows, and the songs about you)!

25 bookish facts about me! I was tagged by @violaeade ♡
1. Found families and ensemble casts are my favourite things! Especially when they go hand-in-hand.
2. When I was in grade 5 our teacher made us keep these ‘reading logs’. You had to record everything you read and how long you read. If you didn’t read the minimum weekly amount (I think it was half an hour or something), you received a 15 minutes detention on Friday. Even though I read all the time, I was-- for some reason-- really against filling out the sheet. I spent a lot of Fridays in detention in 2005. 3. One of the times I did fill out my log was after I read Art Spiegelman’s Maus I and II for the first time. This same teacher refused to count them because they were ‘picture books’. I got detention for not reading enough ‘real books’ that week. She really sucked. Call out post @ Ms. Stockton. 4. My go-to favourite book is The Secret History. 5. Shortly after The Goldfinch came out, I served this handsome guy at work who was holding a copy. I told him that I hadn’t read it yet, but that I loved The Secret History, and we chatted for a bit. A few weeks later he came back  and asked me if I remembered him. I said yes, and he asked if I’d read The Goldfinch yet. I said no, and he took his copy out of his bag and... gave it to me. He started talking about his favourite parts, and a few of his criticisms, and how he hoped I’d like it. I was speechless. When I went home that night, I started it immediately. It was kind of beat up, as if it was a couple decades old, instead of a couple months. I never saw him again, but I hope he’s doing amazing.
6. The one tattoo I have is book related (a ley line, from The Raven Cycle), and most of the future ones I get will probably have the same bookish theme. I’m currently thinking about one that is a bit of a Lynburn Legacy/In Other Lands crossover. 7. I always, always have a book in my bag. If I don’t it’s because it’s an e-book on my phone. 8. I love book signings! I’ve met Scott Westerfeld 3 times, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, and Justine Larbelestier twice, and Sarah Rees Brennan and Suzanne Collins once. 9. I travelled from Toronto to Montreal last month (a seven hour bus ride out of province) to go to Sarah Rees Brennan’s book club and signing. I booked a cheap hotel for a night, and a round trip bus. That was extra, even for me, but her writing is incredibly important to me, and she’s such an awesome person. It was honestly one of the greatest two days of my life. 10. The second most extra thing I’ve done for a book signing was in 2010 or 2011 when Suzanne Collins came to Toronto. The event was free, but ticketed, and so my friend and I lined up outside the bookstore at 4:30 AM the morning they were releasing the tickets. It was freezing, but worth it. We were third and fourth in line, and a ton of people started showing up not to long after we got there.
11. Another bad school story: My teacher in grade 1 & 2 had ‘book bins’ that kids could read from. The thing was, everyone could only read from the bins with their names on it. We were grouped by reading level, so basically the kids with the ‘lowest’ reading level in the first bin were publicly shamed?? The bin with the ‘highest’ reading level was the last one, and mine was the only name on it. I was so smug about it at the time, but holy shit, that’s a terrible thing to do to kids.  12. For Halloween 2000 I was a tiny, pixie-haired Harry Potter. My mum had read the books to me, and I was obsessed. The film series hadn’t started yet, and no one knew who I was. Tiny Hannah was so sad! 13. My mum has worked in art galleries my whole life, so I was dragged to contemporary art shows through out my childhood. I’d frustrate her sometimes because she’d try to get me to look at the art, but I’d have my nose in a book. I think she eventually started to think it was pretty funny. 14. I think the first book I absolutely fell in love with was The Thief Lord in 2004. 15. I rarely read contemporary fiction unless I’ve heard amazing things. I’m a SF/F kind of girl. Except... 16. I’m in a book club! Long story of how I joined, but I’m the youngest by at least six years, and they all like contemporary fiction and romance, so that’s what I read... Still, they’re all really lovely women, and we have nice wine-and-potlucks. 17. I always get nervous starting thrillers/mysteries because the endings often don’t quite pay off. On the same note, I get super excited when they do! 18. I hate leaving books/series unfinished. I try my best to find something (a character, a plot detail) that helps me make it to the end, but sometimes I just can’t. 19. (I had to abandon Mara Dyer part way through book 1, ToG after book 3, and ACoTaR after book 1... I know people love those series, but they just aren’t for me). 20. The first book series I ever wrote fanfic for was The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. The stories are long-lost, but that series was stunning. 21. I was absolutely obsessed with the Warrior Cat books between 2003 and 2006. 22. And even more obsessed with Twilight between 2006 and 2009. I loved Alice so much. 23. My Goodreads TBR is currently 556 books long, and always growing. 24. I want to be published on day, so bad. 25. I never shut up about books, so shout out to my friends for dealing with that. Particularly @modesthubris lmao
No pressure to do this, but I’m tagging @kayascodelorio @mynamesdrstuff @modesthubris @hotdamnilton @ava-lavender @libraryleopard @displayheartcode @roryglimore @alekszova and anyone who wants to do this!
