A REALLY long rant on the Joint Training Arc.

Okay, so since the Joint Training Arc is basically done, I thought I would share my various opinions and adress certain issues that A LOT of people had with this arc.

But, before we get into the actual rant, I think I should distinguish the difference between an opinion, criticism and just plain antagonism.

Here is an example of just misinformed toxicity:

This is just being TOXIC!!! You can’t shelter these horrible comments by saying “it’s just an opinion.” Please don’t act like after 4 years of really enthralling writing, he’s now the worst writer ever. Instead, explain why you don’t think this was the best story choice, instead of being clearly misinformed. It’s nothing absolutely terrible, but just a simple example on how people can be so demanding and completely inconsiderate to the creator.

“Forbidding” Horikoshi from writing is actually ridiculous. He WROTE AND CREATED your “precious sons” that you love so much. So, if you claim that the manga is now utter trash because it doesn’t personally cater to you, please abandon or take a long break from the manga/anime to maybe clear your head. Thank you.

We don’t need any more toxicity in this fandom than we already do.

Now with that said, let’s talk about the arc! (Also keep in mind that these ideas spurred from Reddit so, I decided to expand on it)

1-B vs 1-A situation:

I've been reading a ton of comments too, the good, and the bad and it's fine, everyone has their opinions and that's cool, but for me, it didn't seem it was about who won or lost, it was more about how each class was taught. And this boils down to both Vlad and Aizawa.

Vlad has obviously been pushing his students and their quirks to the max in regards to working in teams. This shines through in all of the fights they all work together very well and know the strengths and weaknesses of each other as well as their enemies. They go into a battle with a plan and are ready to execute the plan flawlessly.

Whereas Aizawa I believe has pushed for more individualist thinking style, and I think this comes from his basis of fighting villains. No one will come to save you, you have to be able to handle yourself whether escaping or defeating. He doesn't coddle his students, and he does push them to the brink as well. What's interesting is Class A has had more hands-on experience. With Aizawa’s teaching style I think they sometimes have a harder time working with one another and they can fall apart with their teamwork. HOWEVER their real-life experience has taught them that the best-laid out plans can not go as plan, and they are able to utilize their 'individual' thinking to fight regardless of a plan falling through.

I found it really interesting and I think there's value in both ways of thinking for Vlad and Aizawa. For Class B, they will have to learn how to abandon a plan that's not working and strategize on the fly, and Class A will have to hone their teamwork for long-running battles.

And let's be honest, these are just kids, pushing their bodies and minds to the limit, I don't find Class B to be 'trash' just because they lost, they still fought hard and worked better together in the long run then Class A. Class B didn't have any dead weight with their battles, everyone was utilized and contributed to all their fights. People are so set on who “won” or who “lost” the battle, that people overlook everyone’s overall individual quirks and techniques. I personally believe that many of the 1-B students were amazing and are forces to be reckoned with. It’s just that 1-A knows how to handle themselves when things don’t to go to plan rather than 1-B (as mentioned before) which gave 1-A the upper-hand in most of the battles, but I can definitely name a few fights where Class A's members were carried by their team.

Now to address the Shinsou thing:

To everyone who was PRESSED that Shinsou didn’t win....

What do you expect from Shinsou? I feel like people were overestimating him. Even with those cloth bindings and his quirk. All you need to do is shut your mouth, grab his cloth bindings (at best he has a few months training) keep focusing on him,restrain him, and boom you're done.(I obviously know it’s not that simple, but basically) I love Shinsou, I really do, but he’s basically Aizawa (I love Aizawa too don’t get me wrong). Aizawa mentioned that it took FIVE YEARS for him to truly master his quirk, and even though since this is the younger generation, so he’ll probably get the hang of it sooner, how long as he really been “training” his quirk under Aizawa? Definitely not long enough for him to go 1v1 with someone who is a close combat fighter. (It really isn’t that shocking that Deku won, he could probably win without Black Whip). Don't get me wrong Shinsou has improved MONUMENTALLY but not to the extent of 1-A who has direct experience in fighting villains. I just think people are mainly mad that 1-B lost is as because they think Shinsou won’t get into the Hero Course. Like chill. One of the main reasons 1-A won in the first match was because of Shinsou, so I think that proves that he is MORE than capable to get in to the Hero Course.

The whole OP Deku thing:

First off, I honestly don't expect him to ever match All Might at his prime in terms of consistent pure raw strength. Deku isn't a giant man of pure muscle, so I don't think he'd be able to go 100 and maintain it like All Might could. Deku is more of a person of different techniques and strategy, rather than brute force. Like, I don't know if Deku is going to be throwing punches that can blow away a city block.

That being said, each generation is getting stronger. Like, Endeavor will be surpassed by Todoroki by the time he graduates (if it even takes that long). Iida is already faster than Gran Torino. In the very beginning of the manga, they mentioned Deku will be the strongest holder of OFA, since it gets stronger each generation. Deku will have formidable rivals if the other strong students also reach their full potential. Hell, those rowdy kids we saw at the makeup exam already had really strong quirks at their young age. Generational power creep means that everybody around Deku will get way stronger than the current pros.

I understand the sentiment that Deku doesn't need more quirks, but Deku's quirk development was already approaching a plateau in terms of being able to fully control what power he could handle. He'd just work on his technique and slowly get stronger and stronger. Sure, he's gonna eventually be able to punch/kick hard enough to shoot himself around in the air, but we've already seen that stuff (plus Bakugo does that too). I know Horikoshi is creative and will develop some cool moves for Deku, but Deku's struggle to control OfA was mostly over. All he had to do wast master OFA steadily and he’ll be good. More quirks means that he may unlock more quirks when he's able to use more %. So instead of reaching 30% and just being X amount stronger physically, he may unlock a new tool to try and master/incorporate into his combat toolkit.

If this is a negative turn for the story, we won't even be able to tell until many, many more chapters are released. We may look back and decide that this was a bad move, but we shouldn't assume that's the case when it was literally introduced TWO WHOLE CHAPTERS AGO. (even though I don’t think it was a bad move AT ALL)

What I hope to see in future Arcs:

I think what fans would really enjoy and we could all use some real Deku character development. Deku’s my favorite character, but I feel like people can’t connect to him as much as someone like Todoroki, because his lack of emotional development. He’s indeed way more confident then he was in the beginning, I still feel like he has low self esteem. Someone needs to tell him that he’s worthy of this mega powerful quirk. ( he needs it 😭)We know so much about him, but rarely see him living his day to day life outside of training, costume updates and the occasional villain attack. Last time we got anything close to development in was only told through Aoyama's development.

These next few chapters will definitely give us something, but only as it relates to One for All. I'd honestly like to know Deku's thoughts about his situation, he seems determined that's for sure. Does he feel stressed, uninformed, unprepared, scared...resentful? We can infer a bunch, I'd just like to see him talk to All Might, Bakugo or his mom about it.

In Conclusion:

Honestly, to me,It never seemed to matter who won or lost any of these matches people were gonna complain regardless. When Class A wins they call it predictable and when class B won they say call it BS or plot amor. Even when it’s a draw people got upset saying Todoroki was disappointing. Some people wanted the matches to be fleshed out over a couple of chapters rather than rushed, then a few weeks later complained that it was taking to long. Bakugo wins his match quickly and those same people lose their minds about how they wanted the match to be longer. People complained about Horikoshi not letting the girls shine in battle after the second match, but conveniently forgets Tsuyu was the MVP of the first match and Kendo and Mushroom girl made 1-B win the second match. (AND WE’RE NOT GONNA FORGET HOW URARAKA AND MINA DOMINATED THE MATCH)Then you have the people who say all of 1-B is worthless and then Juzo and Tetsutetsu prove otherwise. Now we have people think Deku is OP but in this new chapter it seems that he much has a limit to using these other abilities but I’m sure that won’t stop the myriad of complaints. Every week the same people come to see the spoilers and complain based off of a fragmented non-contextualized summary of the chapter and wonder why they enjoy the chapter itself less. Maybe going into a chapter with a negative outlook will do that. The part that irks me is that virtually everyone whose binge-read this arc seems to enjoy it only seems to be us week to week readers with a issue. Either way I hope the discussion going into the next arc are far more level-headed constructive than they have been.

I think this will be one of the arcs that played out better once it was animated. Individual panels maybe favored over the anime, but overall pacing will surely favor the anime. Waiting week in and week out, over analyzing every short chapter has really done no favors for fans and Horikoshi.

The Untamed: The Living Dead Review - SPOILERS

The is a review of The Living Dead and IT WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS, if you haven’t watched it yet and want to avoid spoilers, skip this review.

Honestly, I was disappointed with the movie. I was so excited about and I found it really underwhelming. Before I get into specifics, I would like to preface this by saying that I think a majority of the problems arose from a) a bad director and b) they tried to fit too much into an 80 minute movie. I think that it could have been a lot better with a better director and if they had made this into like a 4-6 episode mini-series.

My first problem was lack of context. I was under the impression that this movie was supposed to be Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui pretty much right after the end of canon when they go off together to explore Lan Sizhui’s heritage.  Obviously I figured out that wasn’t the case when they met up in the beginning and I only later learned after reading reviews that this is supposed to be years after the end of canon. In a mini-series, I think they could have elaborated on this a bit and established what Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui had been doing and how they ended up there.

When I was watching Wen Ning, I didn’t feel like I was watching Wen Ning, he was so different. Like, I get that it’s years after the canon so he’s grown and matured a lot, but I felt like they changed his character too much. Part of what made his character so lovable in the original was that he was kinda goofy. He was awkward and shy and a little dense sometimes and it was cute. I’m not saying he wasn’t smart and competent in the original (because he was, he just didn’t always have a chance to show it), but there’s a stark contrast because he’s just very serious in the movie. They try to make some attempts at humor with him (“call me brother, wwx says uncle makes me sound old) but they often fell flat because of poor timing or poor acting. (In terms of acting, I choose to put the most blame on the director and not the actors, but I will elaborate on that further later).

WN also had what I thought was a very interesting character arc, but it was rushed and resolved itself too easily and had no build up (again, because they tried to cram too many plotlines into an 80 minute movie). We see that he has internal conflict over being a ghost puppet and he questions his own agency, but ultimately overcomes this in time for the final battle. This could have been done so well had they given it proper time. In a mini-series, they definitely could’ve built up to it by showing more interactions between WN and the townspeople where they react badly to him (they had some, but I didn’t realize they were connected to WN’s arc until after the arc was over) and maybe some conversations about it with LSZ. I thought Zhou Yi pretending to be WN in the hellscape was cool and I wish there had been more of that.

Speaking of WN character arc, I have to address the “cameo.” It was such a joke. It was very clearly not Xiao Zhan and was just a double and I wish they hadn’t included it at all. There was a lot of implication that WWX was important to WN development, but none of it was shown. In the original, it’s clear how much WWX means to WN and it was a very important step when he decided to leave WWX. In the movie, it’s implied that WN has kept in contact with WWX and they see each other sometimes, but it still felt out of place when WWX appeared in the hellscape (also I’m confused because I can’t tell if that was actually supposed to be WWX or just WN’s imagined version of him). I love the relationship between WN and WWX and I think some well-placed backflashes could’ve a) really added to WN’s developmental arc and b) would’ve provided some good cameo without needing to insert the characters into the current story (also could’ve given sneak peak into what WWX and LWJ are up to).

(to reiterate, the point of a cameo a) excitement at seeing a fav character, b) providing a glimpse into what that character (and others) are up to and what they’ve been doing since canon, c) because they are somehow relevant to the story, and/or d) they add another layer to the story. The WWX cameo accomplishes none of these things and shouldn’t have been included, unless they could incorporate him more into WN’s plot throughout the movie)

The Yin Metal. This made me so confused because they didn’t explain it at all. I might be wrong, but I thought that in canon they destroyed all the yin metal pieces? But then all of the sudden Zhou Yi has a piece? And they never explain where he got it. They never explain the manuscript either. Or what’s even on the manuscript, though I think it’s supposed to be how to build the tiger seal, but it’s also implied to have to do with resurrection maybe? Again, with more time and maybe some flashbacks, they could’ve explained this better.

LSZ was largely pointless to this movie (WN kinda was too, but at least he had his own arc) and this upset me. I was so excited to see my babies going on adventure but that’s not really what this movie ended up being. I was reminded of one of the reasons I hate The Great Gatsby. Now, I won’t go on a full rant about the Great Gatsby (though I could), but my biggest problem is Nick. Nick is the narrator of the story, but he serves no purpose in the story other than to take it from scene to scene and he has almost no effect on the central plot. I felt this way with WN and LSZ, like they didn’t really contribute much to the story, other than the final boss fight. It felt like they were just witnessing everything, especially LSZ who basically just followed whatever WN said. The story of the Xiao’s took a lot of time and in a mini-series, I think time could be used a lot more effectively and split better between the past and the present, and it would give more time for WN and LSZ interactions and actions.

The new characters. I liked them, but they and their story all lacked development. Which, again, feels like a missed opportunity. The big reveal that Zhou Yi was the evil person and that he was lying lacked a certain umpf because the story sped along to fast. Like, the very next day, WN realizes inconsistencies and the name on the grave and the entire story is revealed within what feels like five minutes. If they had more time, they could’ve really built up the credibility of Zhou Yi first, so that his lie had more emotional impact like what they were going for. Also more in depth backflashes for some better world building of the relationships between Xiao Ching, Zhou Zishu, and Zhou Yi because like I said, I did actually like and enjoy these new characters, but I couldn’t fully appreciate them because there wasn’t enough time.

(another problem I had was that big reveal was confusing to me. So Zhou Yi is just a servant and he imagined his interactions with Xiao Qing, right? But then he brings back her spirit(?) and she’s all nice? But then they imply that that’s not really her, so what or who is it? Also, Zhou Zishu and Zhou Yi have the same surname, is there is a relation there or coincidence? Or was it supposed to be implied that Zhou Zishu’s surname isn’t Zhou and Yi lied about that too? Lots of questions, and given more time I think they could’ve clarified a lot of this)

My last point for now is some of the weak performances by the actors, which I feel can probably be attributed to the director. A lot of dialogue, especially between WN and LSZ felt very stilted and awkward and did not speak to the easy camaraderie that they’re supposed to have. Just the timing and some of the back and forth felt off and lacked fluidity. I loved the relationship between WN and LSZ in the original and how they made each other laugh and smile and there was none of that in this movie, they felt more like acquaintances than family members. There have also been complaints that the actors underacted, especially the new characters, and I would disagree with, and again, cite this to a bad director who wasn’t good at or didn’t care as much about pulling out strong performances, and to the fact that all of the characters had relatively small roles individually and didn’t have a chance to fully flesh out their characters.

(sorry, one final brief thought, but the music during the final fight scene irritated me. The soundtrack for the rest of the movie was fine, and I even liked it, but a 3 minute electric guitar solo felt so out of place in a franchise that has only ever used traditional chinese music)

Wow, so this review ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would be, so let me end with some positives.

The CGI. Some people may complain that it was too cheesy or whatnot, but I honestly really liked the CGI. It provided some cool visual effects during the fights (though they could’ve toned a bit in the fight scenes) and it made spiritual cultivation a more physical thing and helped me understand why using a sword requires high cultivation levels. Were the fights a bit showy? Yeah, but I’m a sucker for flashy fights.

The next movie. You guys, I am so excited for the next movie, Fatal Journey! I fucking hate Jin Guangyao, but I would like to see more of his story that was only alluded to in canon. Also, I love the Nie brothers (especially Huaisang) and I can’t wait to see more interactions between them! I also have high hopes for this movie and I don’t think the same problems with the living dead will apply because it’s based on characters we already know (I assume and hope) and doesn’t introduce new completely unrelated characters, I think it will be more dialogue/interactions based rather than a murder mystery, plus it’s not a new story, it’s an untold story, so it’s just adding more content to the canon rather than expanding the canon.

Here & Now - Chapter 6

As with any chaos within stan Twitter or k-pop stan Twitter, it was only truly a mess for about half a day. I'd fallen asleep to it and by the time I'd woken up for work, it was ramping up again and died down my lunch.

Speculation as to why we were together and conspiracy theories about why Yoongi would ever smile at me played through for a while. Then in came the questions about if we were working together and/or friends hit. My mentions were a mess and muting them didn't help much.

Once twenty-four hours passed talk of it was at a lull, but I was still getting questions on what we were working on. Yoongi had seen my phone when we were working and then there was another statement dropped. That one about how we'd met because of our friendships with Hals and because I'd worked with Namjoon before. They also made sure to note there would be no further comment on if we were working on anything. There was also a bit about not harassing me.

Again people were riled, but it wasn't too bad. I was getting less hate then I predicted, but of course I still saw the occasional comment about my appearance, my unworthiness to date Yoongi even though we weren't dating and the rare remark about my race.

The love or curiosity far surpassed that though. Many were excited that we could be working on something, especially if it was Agust D related. They'd enjoyed the music I'd helped Joon create and were ready to see what could be in store.

It stroked my ego.

All in all, it wasn't a total shit show, so I was pleased with that. And when it was almost nonexistent on any of my accounts I was more than happy to be over it.

Especially since it all happened on the last week Yoongi would be in the US and the last few days were crucial. We ended up cooped up in my office from midnight his second to last day well into the morning and showed no signs of stopping.

"Reverb," Yoongi mumbled, moving to remove it again.

As I downed my kind of hot tea I reached over and slapped his hand away. He turned to me, eyes narrowed with annoyance.

"Why?" he deadpanned.

Holding up a finger I finished the tea and sat the thermos down. My eyes narrowed to match him, mild irritation filling me.

"You've changed your mind about the reverb in that exact same section five times in the last ten hours. All without changing anything else in the track. It stays," I said firmly.

His arms crossed over his chest and his head tilted as he stared me down. As he'd done many times in the past month, he was challenging me. Obviously, the songs were his and he had to be happy with the final product, but I wasn't going to let him keep messing with things that were fine. So, I sat back in my chair and joined his little staring competition.

After several moments of just looking at each other he turned in the chair and removed it anyway. I raged internally.

"I'll remove it if I want to. Sounds better like that anyway," he mumbled in Korean.

"Not what you said two hours, but okay," I responded clearly.

Yoongi's head shot up and his eyes widened, as if he'd forgotten that I spoke the language and understood him very well.

Rolling my eyes I slid my chair over, knocking him off to the side so I was sitting right in front of the computer. There was a groan and he reached over to stop my hand, but I slapped it away. I wasn't in the mood to back and forth with him about whether it should stay or leave, so I just saved it and opened up another file.

Grabbing my headphones I got to put them on, but he stops my hand again. When I turn to him he's staring - glaring at me.

"Don't you have some lyrics to rewrite?" I asked.

His mouth open and closed, his glare growing in intensity. It was obvious he wasn't actually upset with me though, he almost seemed a little amused.

When a second passed and nothing happened, I removed my hand and slid on the headphones. Without a glance his way I got to work and at some point he grabbed his notebook and laptop, presumably getting to work.

He'd allowed me a great deal of control on one of the songs, which made it easier to work on without consulting him. It was the only one on the mini that was almost fully finished for a first pass through. We'd been working on the other's simultaneously to get a general sound and though chaotic it was fun.

The genre I was trying to convey with the song was less hip hop and more R&B. It would include a lot more singing on Yoongi's part and maybe back up vocals from someone else, but mostly all him. He was avoiding features, but for what I had in mind someone would have to lend their voice.

I'd last left off where I'd thought some piano would work out. Clearing the desk of random things I centered the keyboard for comfort and got to work. I wasn't trained in it, though I'd taken classes to learn how to play. I could execute pieces well, but it felt very robotic sometimes. Being able to incorporate it into songs I worked on helped me progress.

As time went on I grew more frustrated with the keyboard, having a hard time getting the sound just right. Everything to start was fine, but the ending notes left me unsatisfied.

A groan escaped me and I removed my hands from the keys frustrated. In a second they were being placed back on and guided along the keys. For a second I didn't know what to do and just let them be moved and tried to get a look at Yoongi in my peripheral.

He played the section over and over using my fingers. Each time he'd run into the same problems I had. I was sure my face was showing how dissatisfied I was about it.

Taking away one hand I pushed the headphones off, he'd unplugged them anyway so it made hearing what he was doing a little hard.

Yoongi didn't stop though, he continued using my hand and his other one to press the keys. At some point he was leaning so close I could feel his breathing on my neck; plus I was forced to lean a little farther forward.

Just as I was about to request some space he did another run through and I froze.

"Do that again," I blurted out.

"What?"

"Do what you just did again." I made sure to speak slower the next time around.

He removed my other hand and I watched intently as his fingers moved across the keys. The sound felt right, but I still wasn't sure.

"Again."

Without question he played again, remaining quiet as my brain processed.

"One more time."

Again he played for me and the moment he was done I took over. My fingers carefully moved across, keeping the keys he pressed in mind. I played it over and over again excitement growing as I heard it.

"That's it," I mumbled.

Moving my hands away I set up for the computer to intake what I was doing. I tried to do it smoothly, but my fingers just didn't flow like they should. It sounded how it should, but it still felt wrong.

Twirling my chair around I glanced up at Yoongi, who was still stood behind me. "Can you do it? I can't get it right."

His expression was neutral, but there was a quirk of the lip before he gained control again. Without a word, he pushed my chair to the side and leaned over to do it himself.

"You did it just fine," he said.

"I'd prefer near perfect before just fine. It wasn't trash, but I am a child of the strings. One with a cello, not piano. My fingers get all tripped up."

He laughed and did it a few times before he stopped and stepped away. With my spot clear, I got working on it, making sure to put it where it needed to be. I made sure to put my headphones on first though since I was giving him barely any hints to what it would sound like.

As I paused working and reached for one of the water bottles near him I noticed the deep-set frown he wore. His eyes were glued to his phone, but the screen dimmed before I could see what upset him.

Pushing off the headphones I turned my chair towards him, tapping his shoulder. "You okay?"

Yoongi glanced at me and then back down at the phone. If at all possible the frown only got deeper, which worried me more than before. I didn't want to rush him though he'd say or not say it when he wanted.

After a minute or so he cleared his throat and looked my way. He appeared to try and change the expression, but it was barely an improvement.

"My flight got moved up to tonight. Need to get back to Korea sooner and to avoid some people who already seem camped out at the airport," he whispered.

The moment the words registered my stomach felt discomfort, a minor nauseous feeling; something that only came when my emotions shifted too quickly or they were too intense.

"Oh."

I'd grown of Yoongi's company and kind of hated that he was leaving so soon. Of course, I'd known he'd only be in the states for a month and was well aware he was leaving the following day but it felt more sudden.

Why my reaction was that intense I was unsure.

The room went quiet again and neither of us looked each other in the eyes. I wasn't sure what to say or do at that point.

"Don't do that," Yoongi said.

Confused I glanced down to see if I was doing anything weird with my body. When nothing jumped out at me I returned my gaze to him.

"What?"

"That." Raising his hand he reached out and poked my bottom lip.

It took a second to realize it was jutted out and I was indeed pouting. But I was still confused.

"Why not?"

He groaned and rolled his eyes. Reaching up again he poked at it again, as if to push it pack. "Because it makes me feel bad."

"Why would you feel bad?" I asked incredulously.

For a second I thought I saw a twinge of pink fill his cheeks, but it was gone before I could question it. His eyes refused to meet mine again, but I was having none of it. I reached over and poked his stomach, making him jolt and glare at me.

Three seconds later he was groaning again, leaning back in his chair with eyes closed.

"Because I liked working with you and hanging out with you. You mesh well with me and are willing to argue with me when I'm being unreasonable work wise. Plus you have some really good ideas even if they don't end up fitting the song. And you're nice to hang out with, outgoing and reserved enough that it's not too draining. I like this friendship and I'll miss it a little."

He spoke so quickly in Korean that my brain processed the words at a delay. Once I did catch up I couldn't stop the awe that escaped my lips, which made him huff and run a hand over his face.

"Don't be embarrassed, I'll miss you to my fellow chaotic introvert."

That did nothing to please him though, just make him burrow into his shirt to get away from me. It was hilarious.

"Besides, it doesn't stop friendship or us working together. Plus I have to come there any way to work on some stuff in person with you in a while. And maybe when I come there for other things and you're not terribly busy being savage Suga of the internationally acclaimed boy band BTS we can hang out," I teased.

Yoongi's leg kicked out, but he missed my shin by a couple of inches. I burst into laughter at his reaction, which only made him more intent on accomplishing his goal. I pushed back, moving out of range though.

He glared at me and threw an empty water instead, which I wasn't able to dodge and hit me in the side of the head.

We both ended up hunched over in laughter. When we stopped the room felt less tense then it had been before.

"We good?" I asked, holding out my hand for a fist bump.

He nodded, but ignored my hand and pulled my chair closer. Before I could ask what he was doing he'd hugged me.

Yoongi had never hugged me before. And honestly, he was a great hugger.

GOTHAM S05E04 “Ruin”

okay listen I know other stuff happened in this episode and it was even stuff I enjoyed and was interested in (like - WTF jeremiah??!) but I don’t have time to talk about any of that when there is SO.MUCH.FOXMA.AWESOMENESS to squee over (and you can’t say I didn’t warn you)

let’s start by going through my FOXMA WISHLIST because there is WAY MORE to check off it that I thought possible in one hit!

Touching - bonus points if it’s beyond practical, like Foxy resting a hand on Eddie’s arm to offer comfort or Eddie gripping Foxy to emotionally steady himself

they flunked on the bonus points but still, FUCKING CHECK!

and you know what? I’m awarding A WHOLE SET OF DIFFERENT BONUS POINTS for Luscious Lucius Fucking ‘down boy I’m in charge’ Fox fucking MANHANDLING ED LIKE IT’S NOTHING because it’s EVERYTHING I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED IN MY LIFE and didn’t even think to put on the list omgomg!

like... I’ve seen a TON of fic and fanart with Foxy being physically dominant with Ed and I do think it makes all the sense characterisation-wise, but for some reason I’d never properly envisioned/embraced it as part of their ship/dynamic (perhaps because in my one and only fic I had Eddie being more dominating when it came to physical stuff due to various contextual reasons... or maybe because we’ve never actually seen Foxy get physical with anyone in canon before, aside from wacking Alvarez with that chair that time, after which he looked frazzled as opposed to the glorious calm and in control he is here so it didn’t really convey his ability to be so.... UNF. while physically taking charge...   idk)

(and juxtapositioned with Eddie’s epic flailing so they are just so perfectly, beautifully opposed)

(then the way Eddie, on seeing it’s Foxy, JUST.FUCKING.TAKES.IT, his fear and flailing dropping all at once as he submits and just holds himself all still and expectant under the hold, clearly THRILLED it’s Foxy who’s found him)

(and Foxy is only using his GODDAMN FINGERTIPS FOR FUCKS SAKE, so firm and commanding with so little effort I just - *fans self*)

I really can’t... there aren’t words for how ecstatic I am about this! 

I was watching with my good friend @enchantersnight, who will attest that I squealed and grabbed her in excitement (which she took with good grace considering she didn’t even know about The List, so must have thought I was just being a mad woman for no reason :p)

And the way they both wave their hand at the window together. And Foxy’s little satisfied nod because he’s not thinking of Ed as a criminal in that moment, all he’s thinking is ‘fuck yeah we just cracked it.’ And they both turn their heads all synchronised because they are so perfectly on the same wavelength, so completely lost in solving the mystery, the parts of themselves that match are so beautifully ALIGNED! 

Showing how they are similar people in many ways - check and check!   

Foxy telling Ed he is a genius and pleading with him to use his intellect for the greater good

K, we’re not all the way there, but HALF A CHECK, because -

Plus he explicitly said he needed Ed’s ‘expertise.’ All of which amounts to acknowledging (and appreciating!) Ed’s genius, so -! *hearts eyes*

...and there is still time for Foxy to plead with Ed to use his genius for good *crosses fingers*

Eddie calling Foxy ‘Lucius’ just the once as part of a serious, emotionally charged moment

Not really what I was going for (I was thinking more Ed yelling his name out of fear for Foxy, or as a desperate plea for Foxy to help him), but A+ for effort for Eddie’s wild yell for ‘Lucius’ here -

Because I love the fact that Eddie was so caught up in working the case at this point that he wanted to keep helping even without personal incentive :)

(aside: Eddie you bad bad bad man killing that innocent old lady though, that was really NOT NECESSARY, pls! ...but it was also somewhat hilarious, in a black comedy kind of way :p 

see - THAT’S the level of villainy/immorality I’m happy for Eddie to exist in, killing/torturing/maiming individuals, even innocent ones, yes, cool, because Eddie IS NOT A GOOD PERSON... but... not killing hundreds of innocents, including CHILDREN, in one hit, that’s... that’s a different kind of villainy, you know?)

One/either thinking the other is dead and being relieved to learn they are alive

Again, not quite. But Foxy does comment in the filing room that he thought Ed was dead. No, he doesn’t show any kind of relief that Eddie ISN’T, but since it’s now canon that Foxy somehow learnt of Ed’s supposed demise this opens up avenues for plenty of headcanons :) 

Because - WHEN did Foxy hear that Ed was dead? and HOW? and even WHY? Was he ACTIVELY LOOKING for news on Ed because he personally WANTED TO KNOW? Did it MATTER to Foxy if Ed was alive or dead? Did he feel a pang of sorrow/regret on hearing the news at the fate of a man he saw potential in to be better and wished that somehow Ed’s life could have been different?

(look, Occam’s Razor suggests Jim was probably looking for news on Lee and heard back that both she and Eddie died in the Narrows and THAT’S how Foxy heard about Ed’s death, but SSSSHHHH - I’m gonna imagine Foxy was making quiet enquiries for himself and no-one can stop me!)

We made it to the end of the points on my Wishlist that got fulfilled.

Now - let’s talk about THE OTHER STUFF that was amazing!

Lucius RELEASING ED and HOLDING HIM IN PLACE JUST BY POINTING A FINGER AT HIM LIKE FUUUUCK!

And again there’s no fucking hesitation. The SHEER CONFIDENCE Foxy has that he CAN AND WILL exert this much power over Ed just. Wow. Just wow.

...there’s something interesting to make of this maybe actually...because Foxy...wasn’t this...commanding, with Ed before. No he was never intimidated, but during the whole riddle crime spree and the confrontation with Harvey on the stairwell Foxy was... nervous around Ed? Like Ed was a live wire or dangerous animal, someone Foxy found a little UNPREDICTABLE and thus was less firm and more pleading with? But NOW... 

okay, the stakes are different here ofc - before there were lives on the line and Foxy’s interaction with Ed was the one thing that could save them, so that pressure would have made him hesitant to try and take control...

yeah, that’s it isn’t it - Ed needs a viable threat in order to exert power/control over Foxy (and anyone really)

but without that threat the balance of power absolutely lies with Foxy (so obviously here, with Eddie unarmed and in such a state of disarray! but was also true in that scene with them at the GCPD lab when Eddie was investigating the Red Hood Gang)

Then also EDDIE’S.FUCKING.SMILE!! 

Anyone else displaying this much power over him, exposing his vulnerability, his ‘inadequacies’ (so Eddie might see it), would surely make Eddie furious, scared even perhaps - he might rail against them, scowl, try to fight or run. 

But here with Foxy he just FUCKING SMILES. He is so GODDAMN HAPPY to have been caught by FOXY. He doesn’t try to fight or escape because HE WANTS TO HAVE A MOMENT WITH FOXY, he WANTS TO BANTER. Because, dare I say, he LIKES BEING IN FOXY’S POWER??

Likewise when Foxy busts out the blackmail THIS is Eddie’s reaction

THIS -

Just look at him he’s FUCKING DELIGHTED that Foxy has been smart enough to immediately suss out Ed’s desire for the file is something he can exploit.

And then the way he kinda gleefully tries to figure out what Foxy could possibly want from him - I ADORE IT. 

Because it’s become a GAME to Eddie now ofc - he and Foxy playing off each other. 

And it’s a delicious blend of Foxy being all controlling and also flippant in the way he talks to Ed, thus him gently leading Ed into taking it this way, and also Eddie’s clear respect and personal interest in Foxy making him inclined to put a positive spin on the situation, to find it enjoyable. And like... it doesn’t feel esp planned or manipulative on Foxy’s part? Their reactions to each other just feel... genuine? Obviously Foxy IS trying to convince Ed to help him but... the way he speaks to him and looks at him... it just feels like Foxy being NATURAL with Ed to me? Like, he’s not spending all the time carefully choosing his words and behaviour, calculating what he needs to do to win Ed over, he’s just... going with the flow? Reacting to Ed... in the way he WANTS to, and Ed is doing the same? 

Sure they’ve both got end goals they want to achieve, but during their banter those almost seem secondary, just for moment, to the mutual enjoyment they are getting from their interaction?

And yes, mutual - look at this and tell me Foxy isn’t having fun as well!

@vampirebillionaire pointed out it’s kinda crazy Eddie was able to physically capture a Street Demon thug, but can’t muster enough strength to yank a file from a scientist :p 

I like your suggestion, Daisy, that this adds to the ‘mind controlled Eddie’ theory - ie. when Eddie is under the influence he becomes more physically capable perhaps.

May I also suggest another possibility - that the file grab was just for show? Because Eddie desperately WANTS to team up with Foxy for a bit. But he has to convince himself it is absolutely his ONLY OPTION in order to do so? Because Eddie is a confused and repressed and psychologically mixed up prawn and can’t accept just wanting to work with Foxy just because. Plus a blackmail scenario/game has already been established. So to Eddie’s mind the only way that makes sense for him to work with Foxy in this moment is for Foxy’s blackmail to hold up. Meaning before Eddie can agree he has to establish that he CANNOT get the file by other means? Hence all the huffing and puffing and extra lunge at the end - it’s all him adding to the pretence?

...idk it’s prob too involved for what the show was actually going for, but it crossed my mind :p Felt like ‘Riddler logic’ you know? And involves a bit of theatrics, and Eddie lying to himself...

Anyway, the other PHENOMENAL THING about this scene -

You know, that riddle for ‘name’ that clever fandom people cleverly extracted from the voice over line in that dramatic pre-S05 promo? (’I will follow you until your death’) The one that lots of us were taken by because of the vague, possible nygmobblepot associations? (and some of us, ahem, one of us, even used to title a fic), but that was also suspected to be a possible exchange between Ed and a hallucinatory version of himself - maybe being about how the name and/or persona of ‘Riddler’ has been with Ed all along and will be part of him until he dies.

WELL TURNS OUT EDDIE SAYS THAT RIDDLE TO FOXY CAN YOU BELIEVE??

I mean, look, I know it’s just a riddle for plot purposes. But that doesn’t change the fact that Eddie, CANONICALLY, stands there, INCHES from Foxy -

Eddie investigating the crime scene and working it all out was some GENUINE PI RIDDLER SHIT right there *swoon*

I love the way Foxy just steps back and lets Ed get on with it. I flail over Eddie showing his respect for Foxy, but there was real respect in Foxy for Ed here, which was beautiful <3

On the rooftop - *hearts* over Eddie genuinely praising Foxy for figuring out it was the exact spot of the shooting from angles etc, showing he CLEARLY rates Foxy’s intelligence very high :) Only for Foxy to admit that he worked it out because he noticed the weapon’s casing had been left behind :p (which - SLOPPY of blacked out Ed now I think about it?). That was both a fun gag, lightly highlighting how Eddie sometimes misses the obvious and reaches for the most complex option when a much simpler one is on hand (making his advice to Oswald way back when about how sometimes the simpler solution is best really just... lolz... take your own advice Eddie, pls), as well as, I think, maybe hinting that Eddie really may be SMARTER than Foxy on a purely intellectual level - because it was potentially suggesting that Foxy could ONLY tell it was the right place because of the weapon case and might not have been able, at least as fast, to have worked out the angles etc like Eddie did. Maybe...

Eddie telling Foxy in complete seriousness that he hopes Foxy finds the criminal and makes them pay - playing out just like I hoped in the tags over here after seeing the Eddie preview clip of the episode, yes win!

aside: Foxy now has that weapon case and is going to see if it has clues as to the perpetrator - Eddie thinks it won’t but I wonder... while blacked out Eddie left himself a message... I wonder if it’s possible he may have left the weapon case on purpose in the HOPE that he will be found out? that someone will catch him and put a stop to him being mind controlled??

...in any case, this opens up the possibility of Foxy finding out the shooter was Ed and OMG I HAVE ~HOPES AND DREAMS ABOUT THAT

In my hopes and dreams Foxy simply DOES.NOT.BELIEVE that Eddie would/could have committed such a crime, at least not willingly. And especially since Ed literally helped him solve the crime and he saw and heard Ed be GENUINELY affected by the crime enough to want the criminal to pay - and yes, sure, Ed could have been playing him and faking that, getting a kick out of giving Foxy clues to his own crime, but Foxy just feels sure Ed was being honest on that rooftop, that he really didn’t seem to know he was responsible, and it convinces Foxy there is something much more sinister going on here...

*CROSSES FINGERS TIGHT*

(omg - we know Babs gets Eddie at some point... WHAT IF Foxy ends up trying to save Eddie from her??! UGH IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN BUT WHAT A DREAM! Foxy could even go to Oswald maybe to get help saving Ed, maybe providing evidence that Ed is in fact innocent... and in doing so he frees Ozzie from any personal anguish he might be suffering due to believing that Eddie really did commit the crime perhaps? even less likely, but I’m gonna roll with it for now :p)

Right one last thing. I did also have on my wishlist a proviso of the ‘talking in tandem’ thing -

When they talk in tandem they have to finish smiling at each other

Obviously this didn’t happen (POINTS DEDUCTED!!).

*chinhands* Tell me your thoughts about Nirvana on Fire! Orrrrr, if that is two broad a topic (since it's FIFTY FOUR DAMN EPISODES), tell me your thoughts onnnnnn...your favorite lady from the show!

Oh maaaaaan, okay :D I have just finished my WIP draft for my NIF fanfic (170k what the fuck), so this is a GREAT TIME to answer this! Thank you for such an inspiring topic!

It is such a good show. The costuming is often exquisite and obviously very carefully planned out, and the sets are also wonderful. Visually, it’s fucking stunning and just gorgeous to watch, minus some Not Great CGI here and there. The casting is also fantastic, and the actors are all so good - there’s so much subtlety and attention to detail. Even the minor characters are consistent and complex, and there’re a bunch of veeeeery small characterization details that are nevertheless continually incorporated, and I was so delighted when I started to pick up on them. Even the antagonists are well developed and make sense coming out of their contexts (for the most part, at least), and though they can be sympathetic to an extent, that doesn’t negate or minimize the genuine harm they’ve done or the way they’ve created their own downfalls.

Narratively and structurally, the show is a masterpiece as well. The political plots are very cleverly woven and intertwined, and characters’ motivations and ideologies are consistent and well developed. The amount of detailed foreshadowing is stunning, and every time I watch a scene or a section, I feel like I pick up new nuances. It’s just very tightly written. The last episode has some rather rushed pacing, and I have some issues with some things (there’s some fridging that I am Not About, for example), but overall, honestly, the writing and structure are fucking solid, and I enjoyed figuring things out as the story unfolded.

I also really like that, even though it’s a Magical Wuxia Illness, Mei Changsu’s illness and limitations are actually pretty fucking realistic. It resonated with me a lot, and it is, again, consistent throughout. He’s not well, and he makes things worse by pushing too hard, but overall, there are things he can do to mitigate the effects. There are consequences to things, and it comes through. Even secondary characters: Fei Liu is always treated with agency and like he’s actually his age, and Yujin’s eyesight is consistently shitty. Small things, but I really do appreciate it.

The major draw of this show, though, is its ethical and moral stance. It picks apart a lot of assumptions of power, and is very blunt and honest about living under a ruler who grinds down all dissent and promotes people based on his own emotional state. It’s a theme that’s developed throughout, and is critical of such self-serving paranoia. It’s also ruthless in its critique of privilege and the people who take advantage of it - that unthinking cruelty is the downfall of so many people who don’t think those beneath them are people.

It’s also a show about truth and justice and taking down a terrible government. There are so many characters who decide to contribute in what ways they can, and about the fear of what happens to those who push back, and about continuing when things are exhausting and seem to get you nowhere. It’s about making an impossible situation better, and about exposing convenient lies and giving justice to the dead. It’s about honesty and loyalty and actively making choices. It makes no bones about how hard and exhausting it is to fight back, but it’s also about hope. Hope, and seeing others clearly, and doing better even when you think you have nothing left to give. It is... in a lot of ways, it’s a story about people we thought were lost returning to us - literally or metaphorically. “What do we do with the time that is given us?”, y’know?

When good people band together and confront evil, we can go from surviving to thriving. I think that’s a message I really need right now, and it’s fundamentally a hopeful one.

It also has amazing friendships and the Only Redeemed Dad I will allow in media, so that’s a plus too. Please watch this show, because even though it’s a big time investment, it’s a really good one.

So, let’s finish off with some of my favorite ladies, because I cannot pick one, I love them all.

Nihuang: very badass and also gorgeous, sharp as her sword, that one. I love that she’s much more observant and politically aware than anyone ever gives her credit for, because she is so fucking smart, she is terrifying. I love her. It’s so cool to have a character who is a badass general and who can be just as underhanded and snarky as the main protagonist, but who is uncompromising about her emotions, too. She isn’t afraid of being sad, or of obviously loving her little brother, or of admitting that she’s upset about something Mei Changsu did. Also has many A+ looks.

Xia Dong: ALSO super badass and incredibly driven and loyal. I started the series all “but can I really love this essentially a private-FBI-agent?” and the answer is yes, yes I can. Loyalty is virtue #1 to her and everything else kind of derives from that, and the complexities of that become so much more clear through the course of the show. She’s smart, and clever, and she cares a lot about her people. She also loves her husband so much, she’s still grieving over a decade later, and she’s still so upset about the betrayal. I love her.

Consort Jing: quiet and wise and clever and beautiful. God, she’s so fucking cunning, and so very unassuming. Watching the way that she manipulates the situations in the court, and the way that she is so genuinely goodhearted and yet so ruthlessly intelligent is such a blast. A Good Mom and a Good Aunt, deserves every good thing in the world.

Grand Princess Liyang: Liyaaaaaang, she is amazing. Her story is SO FUCKING SAD but she’s so good. Her perseverance and her doubt and her bravery just reduce me to a puddle every time. She never gets a fucking break, and she has so much trauma and fear, but she is always brave, when it comes down to the wire. She also deserves every good thing in the world.

All the women in this show are good? They’re all interesting, and I wish we got to see more of them doing more things. I am keeping this list to just four, because otherwise I will be here all day, but man. This show has so many things to say about women and power and surviving in a sexist society, and it’s pretty fucking great.

Hey, I've loved reading your long Bubbline rants, do you have anything to say about their interactions in Elements and Ketchup? (Also, Marceline's presence in Bonnibel Bubblegum). As of now, where do you think their relationship lies and where do you think it's headed? Do you think they'll become explicitly canon before the show ends?

Hi there! You don’t know how amazing it is to hear that :D Thank you, it’s always great to hear that my rants aren’t just nonsense to others. I’m going to rant again to show how grateful I am, just a quick note first.

The reason why it’s been a while since I posted a rant about Bubbline is that I started doing regular reviews for Adventure Time about a year ago, and so that became my “AT thoughts” outlet. Well, I actually began with retrospectives and I’ve been doing reviews for new episodes since Season 8 premiered. I try to contain myself at least a little bit with these, although my inner shipper still shines through when talking about stuff like The ShirtTM, because who can resist that. I did write about “Elements” and “Ketchup” there, but I’m so glad you asked this because this way I can rant just about the Bubbline aspect.

It’s also a really convenient timing as I’ve been wanting to write about Bubbline, based on discussions I’ve had with friends and other ideas. Some of those might still happen, but at least this gives me an opportunity to voice some of what I’ve been thinking about.

Indeed, I do have a lot to say about their most recent episodes. First of all, can I just point it out that literally all of Marceline’s appearances since the beginning of Season 7 featured Bubblegum as well? Whether they are both main characters like in “Varmints” or “Broke His Crown”, minor ones like in “The Music Hole” or even cameos like “President Porpoise is Missing!” and “Wheels”. The only exception since “Varmints” is “Everything Stays”, where Marcy only mentioned PB, or I guess you could be really critical and say that “Ketchup” doesn’t count. But nitpicking aside, these last three seasons seem to have an agenda.

Not that I don’t see how the lack of Marceline as an individual character has been alarming but from my perspective, the last seasons are clearly going somewhere. I declared after “Stakes” that it’s basically canon and that feeling only grew stronger after “Broke His Crown”, but with that also came a worry that this might be it. After all these years of waiting for the creators to do something, I, along with many others, was worried that “blatantly obvious for those who want to see it but not quite explicitly stated” is the best we’ll get. How do I feel about this following Season 8? Well…

“Elements” wasn’t exactly about Bubbline itself of course, but it contained plenty of small moments that serves as further “proof” for those wanting Bubbline to become canon - and make no mistake, I’m a proud member of that group, but it still wasn’t actual proof, was it? We had Marshmeline staying loyal PB and being constantly by her side, her humming “Greensleeves” and even wearing the famous “What Was Missing” outfit. Uncivilized Elk did a wonderful analysis on what the use of “Greensleeves” might mean, and though I don’t necessarily agree with all of it, I definitely think that the choice of song is intentional and further develops the Bubbline relationship, even if only in a subtle way.

“Ketchup” is much more interesting in that it details what happened before “Elements”, in its own whimsical way. When reviewing the episode I mentioned how Marceline’s story could be interpreted in many ways, but an obvious choice is to take what she said with a grain of salt and apply it to how PB transformed into the pure candy elemental. I absolutely adore this episode and how it lets Marcy process her thoughts and feelings, I love how much she’s grown and how her relationship with PB– sorry, Lollipop Girl is portrayed. What we see is that Marcy fought against the elemental spell and tried to snap Bubblegum out of it (might or might not have even confronted Patience about it) but ultimately gave in so she could be by Bonnie’s side as the spell washed over Ooo.

What’s great about this is not just the very heavy implication that Marceline cares this deeply about PB. Well, that’s great, but it’s mostly just amazing to see how far she’s come since “I’m Just Your Problem”. She still has her own way of coping with things and some stuff is still too hard to talk about (like her mother at the end of the episode), but she’s trying. She admits how much this affected her and she admits how much she cares about Bonnie. This might not seem like a big deal now, but think back to Season 3 Marcy. Even though Bubblegum is strictly speaking not even in the episode, “Ketchup” is yet another milestone for these two.

I didn’t know how to incorporate my thoughts on Marcy into the “Bonnibel Bubblegum” review so here we go. It’s a shame she didn’t have any lines but that was most likely down to real life voice acting reasons, maybe they didn’t feel like dragging Olivia Olson into the studio for two lines. But even without saying anything Marcy’s presence is significant for the same reason that “Ketchup” was: it shows us how far our characters have come. The episode is clearly about the eponymous character and her past, but the scenes set in the present tell us that Finn, Jake, PB and Marcy (along with BMO, sometimes) just hang out as casual friends. Again, think back to “What Was Missing” and how they were almost forced to hang out together.

That being said, I have another thought regarding this most recent episode and the end of the show in general, which leads us into the last section of this answer. Where the Bubbline relationship lies right now and where it’s headed, hmm. Where it lies now, if you ask me, is in limbo. Throughout Season 7 we saw them talk through their problems, become close friends again and ever since then it’s been a ship tease and subtext paradise. I guess if you’re reading this I don’t have to explain how almost every one of their interactions could be interpreted as a couple, so just take that for granted. The subtext is there, hell, it’s this close to being actual text. But it’s not actual text, is it? And that’s annoying me more and more as each episode passes.

Look, Adventure Time only has 12 episodes left until the end. Around two hours worth of TV is all we’re going to get, and I would love to trust the creators but I’m growing anxious. There are a few characters arcs and storylines that need resolving and Bubbline is one of them. With episodes like “Marcy & Hunson” plus the inevitable battle of wits between Bonnie and Uncle Gumbald coming up I’m not really afraid of them not getting well-deserved conclusions as individual characters. Wouldn’t it be a damn shame though not to have a final scene between just the two of them though? And I’m not talking Korrasami level last scene, neither of them is the protagonist so I get that they are not the main focus of the show. But for all this build up to go nowhere, to stay in this limbo of just enough to see that there’s something but not quite there yet, now that would be a narrative nightmare.

I couldn’t hide the fact that I ship them even if I wanted to, so I’m saying this as a proud fan but also as someone who tries to view it all objectively: Bubbline has to happen at this point. Where do I think it’s headed? Well, it’s headed towards them being a couple, it’s been heading there for years now. From a narrative point of view, it makes perfect sense (this is one of the posts I’ve been wanting to write but haven’t had the time yet). It wouldn’t just be fanservice or giving into the pressure of representation - if anything, this would still be viewed as a move against societal expectations. I’ve talked about why it would mean a lot for Bubbline in particular to become canon, but it’s not just about the LGBT+ aspect of it. Every scene shared between these two have been heading towards a moment where they finally admit their love for each other.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful when I say all that we’ve had so far is not enough. If anything, all that’s happened since “Varmints” was unimaginable for me back when I started watching Adventure Time five years ago and the only major episode Bubbline had was “What Was Missing”. Even after “Sky Witch” I wondered if they were ever going to go anywhere with this great relationship. But they did, we’ve already seen such beautiful scenes between the two and by no means am I trying to undermine the importance of their friendship. The way these two found each other again after what was clearly a bad falling out is amazing. They mean the world to one another and no matter what happens, that’s canon. Bonnie and Marcy canonically care so much about each other that they are willing to face their own personal demons to keep the other safe.

So I do appreciate what we have right now and honestly if it wasn’t for the blatant “sub”text and the many signs, I would be happy with a Bubbline friendship. I would still ship it romantically, but if I didn’t see signs that the creators want to go for it I would be able to accept that. As I keep saying though, it’s too much at this point for it to go nowhere. I think they have to become explicitly canon before the end, in a way. If they don’t, all of this was for- well, not nothing, but for an underwhelming conclusion.

I’ve been thinking about this lately: what would I do if AT ended without Bubbline becoming canon? Would it affect the way I view the end of the series as a whole? Probably. And maybe this is more the shipper side of me speaking, but I don’t think I would be satisfied with the way they wrap things up if Bubbline doesn’t happen. Even if it does there are still ways in which the finale could be unsatisfactory, but at this point, Bubbline has also become a major factor. 

Because of all of this I really, genuinely hope that Bubbline does become canon by the end. I have faith in the creators and I don’t think they would queerbait knowingly. Would I say I’m sure it will happen, though? Not really. Again, 12 episodes left and so much to resolve, but the best we can do for now is appreciate what we have and keep on hoping. Hey, I never could have imagined Korrasami would truly happen, despite wanting it so bad and seeing the subtext, but maybe it’s safe to start expecting stuff like this.

Welcome back to my blog, lovelies!~ As Tumblr dies out, and people cling on to its last dying flame, I am back with another school project to speak about:

I’ll focusing on broadband, mobile evolution, social media being used for governance and politics (the good and bad sides).  At the end, I might even show a lil’ survey I did in my class for those who use Smartphones (if i get the chance, of course).

Now, let’s dive in!

The Modern Wonders Of Broadband

Before we can dive into this blog and talk about how it’s used nowadays, we must understand the core of this section of the conversation; what exactly is broadband?

Broadband is a high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies, which enables a large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously.   Or in commoner terms, ‘a high speed connection to the internet.’

Today, broadband is mainly used for that sweet, sweet, high-speed, super sonic wifi.  It’s also used for Cable TV, but be honest; most people don’t exactly watch Cable anymore. . .do we?

But that’s besides the point, of course.

The only thing that I can truly see is that broadband is much better and faster than whatever that old dial-up internet was.

Different types of broadband

DSL

The DSL (or Digital Subscriber Line) internet service makes its connection by utilizing unused telephone wires that cause no interruption to your telephone service. 

The speed you experience with a DSL connection varies with your distance from the switching station.  Your speed will be slower the further away you are and faster the closer you are to the switching station and this may be a deciding factor when you attempt to select between a DSL line and a cable connection.

Cable

Ah, Cable.  Something that I don’t watch anymore but is still pretty important nowadays.

Anyway.

The broadband cable connection is provided by the local cable TV provider.  Here, the cable Internet connection speed varies with the number of users on the service at a specific point in time. 

Given a specific geographical area, users of the broadband cable service share the connection bandwidth which slows the speed the more users are on the system.  This will occur at the peak times for example late in the evenings after the work day is over when many people will be accessing the Internet.

Somewhat misleadingly, often the cable company would estimate connection speeds that are based on the thinking that you are using the service. 

But that is clearly not the case.

The newest broadband service is fiber-optic, which is the fastest Internet connection thus far.  Plus, it has a really cool ring to the name. 

However, this type of Internet service is still in its infancy as its service areas are quite limited and because the laying down of the fiber-optic cable takes a while to complete. Wherever it is available, the cost not only competes with that of DSL and cable, but it provides a much faster connection than both of those services.

And it even LOOKS cool, too!

Satellite

The last and slowest broadband service is provided by satellite. Although this is a good replacement for dial-up for those people living in remote rural areas, the installation costs are quite high, but the ongoing monthly charges are competitive to both cable and DSL.

Can’t remember the last time I saw a proper satellite still in use.

Moving onto the next sub-topic, here are:

Caribbean Broadband Companies

In the Caribbean, there are 2 companies that I know are region-wide, and provide broadband services.

First up, Digicel.

Digicel is a mobile phone network provider operating in 33 markets across the Caribbean, Central America, and Oceania regions.

The company is owned by the Irish billionaire by the name Denis O'Brien, is incorporated in Bermuda, and it’s headquarters is down here in Kingston, Jamaica. It has about 14 million wireless users.

Quite a bit of people, huh?

They have a service which is known as Digicel 4G Broadband.  Powered by WiMax technology, it speeds up to 6 Mbps for uploads. 

You can stream movies, play games and video chat online to your heart’s content.

The prices for the pre-paid 4G ranges from JMD$350 to JMD$3000, for 1 day, 3 to 14 days, or even an entire month (30 days).

They even go as far as to supply fibre WiFi (which I’m just finding out as I edit this blog).

From download speeds of 50Mbps to 400Mbps, and upload speeds from 25Mbps to 200Mbps, and prices ranging from JMD$4699 to JMD$15,499, this is the type of high-speed WiFi I’d want for my own house.

Second up is Flow!

Under the parent company of Cable and Wireless, Flow is a trade name used to market cable television, internet, telephone, and wireless services provided by the company.   

They provide a broadband service from 40 mbps for downloads up to 100mbps for downloads, and a constant of 5mbps for uploads, ranging from JMD$4,999 to JMD$12,299 (+GCT).

Their best offerings come in bundle packages, where they offer Cable, phone services, and internet packages in one! 

Now that we’re done with the Broadband section of this blog, let’s move on to……..

Social Media Governance and Politics

Firstly governance.

The main point that I will focus on here is Political Participation.

Governments have provided formal online channels for citizens to report crime, comment on policy, or petition for change.   This is honestly a great concept as everything that is sent would be kept secure, and it would be almost certain that your voice would be heard.

Unfortunately, however, this is restricted to a small elite of internet users, and government websites are not popular. The citizens often use social media to organize activism and protests.

For example:

The ‘Jamaica House Petition’ is a governmental page that is linked to the office of the Prime Minister.  This page would allow you to create a petition that would allow you to engage the Prime Minister in an issue that you wish to address. If you gather 15,000 signatures in 40 days, your petition is reviewed, and if it complies with agreed standards, the Office of the Prime Minister will issue it as an official response.

It’s a great concept and all, and it would be even better if there were actually any petitions there for anyone to sign.

Anywho, moving onto Politics!

The main drawback, though, is that there is tons upon tons upon tons of controversy.  Depending on what’s being sent on can have a huge effect on how the world views certain candidates.

A Countdown of Our Top Blog Posts of 2018 (Which Was Your Favorite?)

2018 was a big (HUGE) year for EHD. The staff doubled in size (SAY WHAT?!?), we wrapped up the labor of love that was the Portland Project (stay tuned for more reveals in 2019), the mountain fixer is ALMOST DONE (and by almost done, we mean there are walls and floors and bathrooms and a kitchen…furnishings are still TBD-head to this post for the most recent update), we launched two super awesome new sections of the site-all the cool kids are hanging out in the Rooms and Shop page, are you?-so yeah, pretty epic. And just wait for next year. We're predicting that 2019 is going to be full of so.many.amazing.things, and we cannot wait. Hopefully, sitting here in 365 days, we'll all look back and say OMG WHAT A FUN YEAR, THAT WAS THE BEST YEAR EVER, but before we get there, we have to wrap up this year, and what better way to do that/get all nostalgic than to look back at the top posts we published these past 12 months.

We originally only planned on doing the top 10 posts of 2018, but how could this post, which set the tone for what's to come here at EHD, not make it in when it was just a 100 page views away from claiming its seat at the popular table? We write our own rules around here, and no one said a “Top Posts of the Year” roundup couldn't include ELEVEN stories. This post was honestly months in the making. With two heavy renovation projects, the whole “style. play. every day.” aspect of this site (and me) kind of fell to the side, and I'm sure the team could see me twitching from withdrawals. In this post, I take a deeeeep dive into my old homes, my style and what's next for me. It's a good one, so if you missed it the first time around, don't make that mistake a second time.

#10: 7 Things I Learned After Instagramming a Photo of Obama & Losing 4K Followers

I really hemmed and hawed about whether to hit “publish” on this one, but some of the team campaigned hard for it because we knew it would cause chatter (and boy did it ever create chatter-it currently has just about 900 comments…you guys had A LOT to say here, as I knew you would). Writing about what was going on in my head before, during and after I randomly and really without too much thought posted a doctored photo of Barak Obama on Instagram one weekend night, only to have a major exodus of followers. If you've ever wanted to read my thoughts about feminism, where I stand on posting personal views on politics and, well, basically, what I learned from this whole thing, head here.

#9: A Romantic Glam Bedroom Makeover with Opalhouse by Target

It's so fun to do inventory at the end of the year of the posts that hit the most with the readers, because it's one of those moments where we get reminded of the posts we published AND LOVED. We post roughly 260 posts every year, so it's easy to be like “Oh yeaaahhh” when you see something make the list. This is one of those posts. Not to say that we forgot about this post at all (it actually had a sister post-I was tasked to showcase Target's new Opalhouse line this spring and because I couldn't pick just one way to use the product in a room, I did two rooms, duh), but I sort of forgot just how sweet and great this room was. That headboard almost broke the internet (and was almost instantly sold out on Target.com for weeks and weeks). You can't see it in this photo, but the Art Deco-y blush velvet swivel chair we used in the corner of this room was also just SO good. All around, just one of those rooms you can't stop staring at (so for good reason it made our Top 10).

#8: My Kitchen Design a Year Later: Lots to Love & Some Regrets

Another post that sparked controversy in the EHD reader universe, except this time, I didn't really anticipate it like I did in the Obama post. This post ran on Arlyn's first day as Editorial Director, so since I was busy onboarding her, I kind of got to ignore the fact (for a few hours, anyway) that everyone was VERY, VERY upset in the comments that I would even think to change anything in my kitchen that I wasn't happy with a year in. Words thrown around by you guys: “frivolous,” “ridiculous,” “wasteful.” What I thought would be a fun idea to dissect what I did in the initial reno and what, in retrospect (and after living with things), I think could work better in terms of style/design and functionality, well…you didn't necessarily agree.

#7: House Tour: Mel's New Place Makes Us Want to Declutter Immediately

EHD veteran Melanie Burstin's house tour was a year (give or take) in the making. Back in early 2017, she revealed her previous apartment in Silver Lake she shared with her boyfriend at the time, but since has moved into a smaller place for herself that she repurposed many of her pieces into. I personally think it was fun to see the same furnishings used in different floor plans (so did you guys). Mel had been making guest appearances on the blog this year since going off on her own with her Etsy shopping series, but it was really nice to hear from her and see her enviably minimalistic design eye at work again.

#6: The Living Room Rules You Need to Know

I don't want to say too much about this post beyond the fact that it was super helpful both for us to have all in one place and, clearly, based on traffic numbers, for you all, too. We walk you through all the “design rules” you need to know about to get a living room that feels “just right” and pulled together, from furniture placement to rugs to lighting (like, did you know sconces should be placed 5 to 6 feet on the wall from the floor?). Consider it our 10 Commandments for arranging your living room (well…22 commandments, but 10 felt more poetic for that tagline). Yes, all rules are made to be broken, but we all need to know the rules first to know how to break them.

#5: “I Design, You Decide”: Mountain Fixer Style

Our very first “I Design, You Decide” vote! While I miiiight regret ever coming up with this “genius marketing” idea for the mountain fixer (not because I didn't want your input, but because it was OUTRAGEOUSLY TIRESOME to design two fully pulled together schemes for every room of the house that both Brian and I loved equally…yeah, what was I thinking?), it's fun to look back at a time before I knew how much time/money/energy this whole series would take. BUT GUESS WHAT? The house is nearly done with the renovation phase, and like I said in this post, I do plan on continuing the polling process, but just at a smaller scale (sofa selection, instead of an entire living room plan, for instance). In this first post, I introduced the two styles we were considering (Refined Scandinavian Chalet-what I really wanted-and Brian's dream, Rustic Scandinavian Cabin. You guys picked…well, click over to find out (or get a refresher) and stay tuned for 2019 for all the reveals we're going to be rolling out once I get it all furnished and styled out (though I'm in no rush and plan to take my time here).

#4: House Tour: A Warm Scandi-Inspired Home

Before we got to Mel's home reveal in August, we tested the waters of showcasing other designers' work/homes with Samantha Gluck's beautiful house. Taking our #4 spot proves you guys were both into her work (which isn't surprising…she's an EHD veterans-she worked on the Cup of Jo and Oh Joy studio makeovers) and seeing house tours. Plus, the reading nook in her playroom also took a top placing in our Best of Instagram post from last week, so overall…lots of favorites here with Sam's home. We promise there are more to come in the new year, and we'll keep curating them as long as you guys keep reading them.

#3: Hair Update: The Team EHD Reveals

Honestly, we had NO IDEA this post would somehow skyrocket to top 3 for the year (with only a few weeks really to get all those page views). We made a heavy push to the intro of this post as well as the reveals on Instagram and you guys devoured it, but once our friends at Cup of Jo also shared the post, as well, that catapulted this to the winner's podium FAST. And while the comment section on this one was a bit action-packed (a lot of you professed that you were disappointed in some of the reveals, that they weren't drastic enough, that no one dared to shave their heads/go bleach blonde/whatever is worthy of being a worthy “transformation”), it was still so much fun for us to experience-and write about-a different kind of “makeover.”

#2: 2018 Design Trends for the Bathroom

Last week, we broke down all the individual trends we uncovered and contemplated this year in this post[LINK], but we purposefully left out our larger trend predictions (like this bathroom one)because we knew they had been our most popular posts of the entire year and didn't want to show our hand too early. THIS ONE! We kind of gave it away in our #2 spot when talking about the sister post to this one (bathroom trends for 2018), but obviously, you guys were hungry for new, fresh, exciting ideas for the kitchen. We absolutely plan to do this one again in the new year, even though kitchen design doesn't turn over super fast, but there's always someone out there doing something fun and innovative that makes us go “OMG WE HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT THAT.” These first 12 design concepts we uncovered at the beginning of last year still feel pretty solid all these months later (though maybe things like terrazzo are still pretty niche), and we can't wait to see how many continue to play out in the mainstream and what else pops up to ogle and wax poetic on.

DEGRASSI SEASON THREE IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS OF A SHOW I HAVE EVER WATCHED ! So intense yet lighthearted and just so real - its beginning to give Skins, Skam, etc. a run for their money again. Everything in just ten episodes proves what wonders being picked up by Netflix has done for the show. Pointers ....

☆ THE PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS

 - Lola and the Gamer Club was so unexpected but so great

- Lola and Yael’s friendship was so amazing and one of the best female friendships to be portrayed on Degrassi IMO. Similar to that between Gamer Club and Lola, they’re such an unlikely pairing but Yael’s support towards Lola and her abortion during episode eight killed me, it was so beautiful

- Grace and Jonah are also one of my favourite friendships on the show bar the fact that I am receiving vibes that replicate season two Grace and Zig. Pleassssse just let there a be a bloody platonic friendship between a guy and a girl, Degrassi, plssss I beg

☆  PLOTS 

- I just really love how every character was depicted as so flawed and problematic yet loving and full of worth this season, it was so wonderful to see and it kind of gives hope watching. I’ve more confidence in myself and others after watching ? 

- The writing was A***** this season. I cannot find a way to criticise it really. Also, A**** writing. Eric, Olivia and Ana all need some kind of recognition after their time on the show following their exits next season - such incredible actors//actresses 

- The refugee plot was so so amazing and I really hope that the information we learn about Rasha and Saad’s backgrounds gives some insight to or a change of heart in anyone watching who has a negative outlook on the refugee crisis. Also, I love how Rasha is a refugee from Syria, muslim and gay, it was just incredible 

- I almost cried watching Zoe come out after watching her so clearly struggle in the past few seasons and it broke me when she moved in with Grace after being kicked out by her homophobic a*s of a mom. Zoe’s come such a long way - like, can we just see her happy now, or ? Also, can I just say that Zasha are one of my otps ? Coool (other two are Hael and Fronah.)

- Goldi’s plot !!!!!!! Her character development is ace and I just love how imperfect she can be but how she learns so much. Also, as somebody who cannot stand religion, I couldn’t help but admire and respect how dedicated she CHOOSES to be to her faith. Also, when she supported Rasha coming out YASSSSS 

- MAYAAAA MY BBY MAYA ! Her plot struck too many chords and it all made so much sense. In reality, Maya has been a ticking time-bomb for such a long time; she had to boil over at some point. Every tiny aspect of every one of her seasons was so important and poignant. It was kind of nice for her to have a happy ending for once. Also, they better not revert back to her old look next season - HECK NO, KEEP THAT CURLING TONG AWAY !

- We finally got an insight into Esme’s background ! Esme is one of those characters who’s problematic behaviour is sometimes too regular for me to understand or accept but after those final scenes in episode ten, wow ! Esme is going to NEED to have a more prominent role in season four - Chelsea really stole that episode as such a capable actress.

- Lola’s abortion storyline was flawless, it couldn’t have been done any better. It really was the best depiction of abortion in both literature and TV/film that I have come across or heard of. Everything from discovering that she had been taking the pill the wrong way to Yael telling her that she was coming to the appointment. The procedure scene was so so vital and important plus the interaction with the doctor was brilliantly written. I also thought that it was so important that Lola was the pregnant girl in that storyline after being fobbed off as the ‘bimbo’ for song long. Manny Santos-development vibes, yass !

- Episode five was probably my favourite episode this season. It ticked every box with both comedy and addressing the pressures and expectations of sexual behaviour and thoughts on both men and women. I had me both in stitches and in awe like IS THIS EVEN REAL 

- I enjoyed Lola and Miles’s platonic relationship so I was a little disappointed when they ‘hooked up’, especially since both are so often depicted as promiscuous and without a conscience. Oh, well. But besides that, I did love how supportive they were towards one another.

- Grace is making me so upset, ohmygosh, episode seven. No words. I was so glad that she changed her mind.

- Well, we can finally understand why Baaz acts like such a d*ck - he is insecure ! That scene where he is basically admitting to being jealous of Hunter was beautifully done and even more so when Hunter let him win the eh, ‘measuring’ contest.

- THE PERIOD STORYLINE OHMYGOSH NO WORDS I JUST LOVE THIS DAMN SHOW

- I haven’t really thought much about the Tristan in a coma storyline yet. I’m not sure how I feel about it uh

☆  RANDOM NOTES 

- Did everyone glow up this season or what ?!?!?!?!?!! Especially Hunter and Maya - DAMN ! In the early seasons of Next Generation, the then-cast apparently used to wear their own clothes in scenes rather than outfits from a wardrobe especially curated for their characters. It seems as if the current cast and crew are heading back this way (only have to look at Reiya and Hunter’s hair, plus Lola and Maya’s hair and outfits.) which I looove - realistic looks and all that.

- MAYA IS TALKING ABOUT CAM OHMYGOSH KATIE IS BACK OHMYGOSH INTERACTION BETWEEN MAYA AND MILES OHMYGOSH THIS IS TBT ON ACID

 - Saad’s camera ? Where can I get it ? Pls ? Someone ?

- “You know what they say .... Big feet ...” This show, I can’t handle it ohmygosh, bless the Gamer Club YES 

- Yael and Hunter are the cutest, I love them both as friends and a romantic pairing and I really love how the show are portraying their difficulties in finding a balance ! Also, we really saw a softer side to both of them and they’re just ahhhhh

- TWIN TIME ! TWIN TIME ! TWIN TIME ! We need more twin time and Hollingsworth sibling scenes in general 

- Am I the only one who was delighted that there was no sign of the Hollingsworth parents this season ?

Then she brushes her teeth, takes out her contacts, and watches a bit more. “While a bedtime routine can be a great time to include self-care and relaxing activities, I find that mindless TV checks those boxes for me.”

Keely Clark, also a mom of two, is a licensed clinical social worker who offers supportive counseling and coaching to moms as they navigate the transitions of motherhood at her private practice MotherBloom Wellness PLLC. Her straightforward routine includes: setting a timer for 30 minutes before bedtime as a gentle reminder to wind down; washing up; dimming the lights; changing into pajamas; lighting a candle, and applying her favorite scented lotion; and wrapping a heated lavender rice bag around her shoulders, or tossing it into bed to warm the sheets.

Think brief. Bedtime routines don’t have to be long and elaborate—unless, of course, you want your’s to be. According to Robinson, “15 minutes of purposeful activities that help you wind down may be enough to set the stage for sleep.”

She noted that these activities might be journaling, meditating, gentle stretching, putting on comfortable pajamas, or drinking a cup of tea. And remember that doing a relaxing activity for 5 or 10 minutes counts, too.

Don’t wait until the kids are finally asleep. That is, you can start your bedtime routine while your kids are awake, Robinson said. She shared this example: Everyone gets in their pajamas and reads together — “this works better for older kids who can read on their own and you can read your own material.” Or you practice a few stretches while your kids get ready for bed, she said.

Unplug — realistically. “[D]isconnecting from any blue light source for 1 to 2 hours before bed is optimal for settling our brains and nervous systems,” Clark said. But that might not be realistic for you. Which is why she suggested trying to unplug from all screens about 15 to 20 minutes before bed.

Sunit Suchdev, a life and business coach for moms who has twin boys, suggested creating a buffer between screen time and sleep time. “Read a book, chat with your partner, meditate, [or practice] deep [breathing].”

Use aromatherapy. “The limbic brain loves to create habits through association,” Suchdev said. “Diffusing the same oils every night can start to signal the brain that it’s time for the nightly routine and eventually, sleep.” Lavender and sandalwood are both potent stress relievers, Clark said.

Problem solve. Robinson suggested reflecting on the specific interruptions or challenges that hamper your bedtime routine and determining how to deal with them, “or work within those realities.”

For instance, if your kids always ask for water after they’re already in bed, incorporate water into their routine, she said. If you find yourself falling down the social media rabbit hole—and you don’t like it—install features or apps that help you limit your use, she added. (Or leave your phone in another room, and use an old-school alarm clock.)

Honor your bedtime. One way to do that is to literally write down your bedtime routine on your calendar, Suchdev said. Another way is to “set a limit on how much other stuff you will do before bed.” That’s because many of us keep doing and going. We (mistakenly) think we don’t deserve to wind down until we’ve checked off every task on our to-do lists, she said. And, if we don’t, we’re clearly “being lazy.” And so we do everything but relax.

However, remember that you’re not a robot; you’re a human being who works hard, and doesn’t have to prove their worth. So maybe you can do a few things on your to-do list, and save the rest for tomorrow (or delegate it).
