The goal of Hong Kong's new Palace Museum, a gift from Beijing to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the territory's return to Chinese sovereignty, according to the museum's director, is to introduce Chinese culture to the city's youth.
The museum, which covers more than 30,000 square metres, exhibits more than 900 artefacts that are on loan from Beijing's Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, including Qing dynasty portraits, calligraphy, and ceramics.
A hundred and sixty-six of those are regarded as "national treasures."
Prior to the museum's opening on July 2, the day after Hong Kong commemorates the anniversary of its handover from British to Chinese sovereignty, museum director Louis Ng stated, "We need to promote the transmission and dissemination of Chinese culture. We must provide greater opportunity for young people, in particular, to comprehend and value Chinese culture."
When the museum's designs were revealed in 2016, there was controversy surrounding them. Critics claimed there was a lack of transparency around the multibillion-dollar project and that it was presented as finalised without public input.
After the contract was made public, there was a time of consultation.
Paintings from the Tang and Song dynasties are among the museum's highlights along with its nine galleries.
The museum next to Kowloon's waterfront is supported by a $446 million donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and it will also feature 13 works on loan from Paris's Louvre Museum.

A room in Can Papiol house-museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Penedès, Catalonia).
Since the year 1790 and throughout the 19th century, this was the home of one of the wealthiest families in the small city of Vilanova i la Geltrú: the Papiol family, who owned many vineyards around the city. The house has preserved its 19th century interiors, and nowadays it's a house-museum that allows visitors to see what a 19th century upper class family home was like.
The house includes a library with about 6,000 books written between the 16th and the 19th centuries, as well as a music room, a billiard room, a ballroom where the family hosted music parties and literary meetings, a dining room, the bedrooms, a small private chapel, the servants' rooms, areas for servants to do domestic work and for farmers to do their work, stables, and a little Romantic garden.

Ceilings, plaster... Can't you just make it move faster?...
Lovely to be sitting here with you... You're kinda cute but it's raining harder...
Then you're drivin' me home... And I don't wanna leave... But I have to go
You kiss me in your car... And it feels like the start of a movie I've seen before... Before...
