God almighty – it feels wrenchingly sad and shocking to bid adieu to adored kitsch icon and pop culture fixture Pee-wee Herman, the madcap man-child character created by comedic visionary Paul Reubens (27 August 1952 – 30 July 2023). Last night Pal and I watched Reuben’s final artistic statement Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016) for the first time (I didn’t have Netflix when it first dropped) – what a joyous way to celebrate his artistry. (Full disclosure: I cried). Reubens made the world a more gleeful place.

It was such a joy to be able to see Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in the the theatre on 35mm! I wore an Ice Cream soup shirt, suspenders, plaid pants, white shows and a red bow tie!
All Pee Wee shows were sold out and everybody was hollering, clapping and singing along it was absolutely fabulous. 💛 🚲 🤡 👟 🦖

I would say most everyone is very saddened by the passing of Paul Reubens. He was very special to many, especially Gen X. He was part of a lot of our childhoods, in real time, as Pee Wee’s Playhouse began in 1986 when we were kids. Then later he became a familiar tv friend to other generations through reruns, VHS tapes, DVDs & streaming
I remember the magical feeling of a new Pee Wee's Playhouse episode every Saturday morning; then taking the Secret Word to school on Mondays & reacting to it with the other kids whenever it was said for the next few days 😁 I can't think of one person whose life was not made happier because Paul Reubens existed.
Pee Wee, Captain Carl & Jambi have been reunited in the great big playhouse in the sky ✨

Never got their bit
Before I move deep into the post, let's 🙏 for an entertainer who amused millions with their talent. TY 🙏🛐❤️🧸
What do I remember about his show?
> I was a quiet kid who used the silence to study my surroundings and think. Heck, Saturday mornings were when I'd catch up on schoolwork and study college players doing their thing.
Pee-wee made such a difference for GebZ kids that you can catch remnants of Paul's work today. Heck, u have a friend who was the genie in a box for Halloween.
Thanks so much Paul for giving us happies for years to come.

Paul Reubens (1952-2023)
I’m absolutely devastated to learn that Paul Reubens, also known as Pee-Wee Herman, has passed away after privately battling cancer.
I first came across his work, not through Pee-Wee but as Oscar Vibenius in a few episodes of Pushing Daisies; you can imagine my shock just two years ago when I got into TNBC and realised that one of the voice actors of my favourite trio of characters was in the first television show I was truly obsessed with and one that remains close to my heart. Despite only being in two or three episodes, he made such an impact and was by far one of the best guest stars on the show.
As I’ve mentioned, he was one of the voice actors who brought the trio of Lock, Shock and Barrel to life in Nightmare Before Christmas - I love those characters so much that I got a tattoo of them in 2021 on my left arm, and it’s one of my favourite tattoos I’ve ever gotten even now. I know that in the scale of things, especially given this man’s career, a voice role doesn’t seem like a huge deal but it does to me.
Once I realised that this man was Pee-Wee Herman, I of course had to check it out. I remember many mornings in summer 2021 being spent watching episodes of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse online, laughing at them despite the fact I’m a full grown adult and just loving the positivity and joy in them. Watching those episodes became a small little routine for me, bringing me something to smile and laugh at even as I dreaded another day of work or whatever the future held. For a small moment every morning that summer, they were a little respite.
This world has truly lost a bright, hilarious, witty and generous spark that can never be replaced.
