Se eu fosse você, teria vergonha de contar isso por aí, porque enquanto você estava JOGANDO VÍDEO GAME tem gente aqui que estava salvando princesas das garras malignas de uma bruxa má! Tem gente aqui que estava montando em dragões. Tá vendo só? Você pode até ser DISCIPLINADO, mas você não deixa de ser um baita de um ARROGANTE… Se, infelizmente, você tiver que ficar por aqui para estragar tudo, e acabar assumindo mesmo o papel de O DARLING PERDIDO na história PETER PAN… Bom, eu desejo boa sorte. Porque você VAI precisar!

RESUMO : James Darling (Sim, este é seu sobrenome de verdade, uma grande ironia, veja só) era, até pouco tempo atrás, um nadador profissional, natural do Queens, Nova York. Antes de se tornar um Perdido, ele estava focado em treinar para os Jogos Olímpicos. Agora... bom, agora ele está perdidinho da silva em um mundo que ele não entende muito bem, tendo que aceitar que pode acabar se tornando um personagem de conto de fadas caso alguém não conserte logo a situação. Ele está feliz com isso? Não mesmo. Mas ele não vê outra escolha a não ser lidar com a situação.

O ANTES

Se você, caro leitor, se interessa bastante por esportes ou pelo menos gosta de acompanhar as olimpíadas de 4 em 4 anos, então é quase certo que já tenha ouvido o nome James Darling pelo menos uma vez. Membro da equipe de natação dos Estados Unidos, você talvez se lembre. Um rapaz ainda novato, eu diria, pois participou de apenas uma Olimpíada até agora, mas que já está sendo chamado de o próximo Michael Phelps. Tudo bem, isso não é bem verdade. Só ele mesmo pensa assim. A verdade, no entanto, é que ele estava começando mesmo a se destacar, e a olimpíada na França seria sua grande chance de fazer seu nome! 

É, você leu certo. Seria, se ele não tivesse se metido na maior confusão de sua vida e ido parar em um um outro mundo, que ele não achava ser real nem em seus sonhos mais loucos. Mas vamos falar sobre isso já já. Primeiro, talvez você precise de um pouco mais de informações sobre ele, até porque ele é um nadador e não um grande jogador de futebol americano.

James nasceu e foi criado no Queens, Nova York. Sendo filho único, sempre recebeu muita atenção de seus pais, o que era bom, porque ele sempre foi um garoto cheio de energia para gastar e precisava de muita supervisão, ou acabaria quebrando a casa inteira (e ele mesmo no processo). Ele também sempre foi bem mimado, afinal, era só ele, mas isso não vem ao caso agora. Sendo tão ativo, era natural que ele se interessasse por algum esporte enquanto crescia e, depois de tentar vários, a natação o conquistou.

Percebendo bem rápido que era disso que gostava, ele passou a se dedicar 100% aos seus treinos. James sempre se sentiu muito bem perto da água, o próprio Percy Jackson, se me permite dizer. Nadar sempre foi sua paixão, e algo no qual ele era muito, muito bom. Começou sua carreira participando de campeonatos escolares, depois campeonatos regionais, estaduais, passando para nacionais e internacionais, até conseguir uma vaga na equipe olímpica dos Estados Unidos. 

Não foi bem o maior destaque em sua primeira competição oficial por seu país, mas não fez feio também. Voltou para casa com duas medalhas de bronze e uma de prata, e agora sonha com a de ouro. James treinou como ninguém para as Olimpíadas que estão chegando. Estava completamente focado nisso, quando o livro apareceu em sua vida. E aí, nossa, tudo mudou.

É aqui que a diversão começa.

O AGORA

James ainda está tentando entender como diabos foi parar naquele lugar de malucos. Sim, malucos. Personagens de contos de fada sendo reais? Qual é, que loucura era aquela? Ele nunca se sentiu tão perdido quanto quando se viu preso naquele lugar, só de roupão, touquinha e sunga (porque veja bem, ele estava treinando, ok?).  Se lembrava de alguns contos por ter assistido um ou outro filme quando criança e por memes na internet, mas seu conhecimento sobre o assunto sempre foi bem limitado, o que certamente já começou a dificultar sua vida. 

Não está muito feliz em estar preso nesse lugar novo, afinal, ele tem uma droga de Olimpíada para participar em pouquíssimos meses e ele deveria estar treinando, não estudando sobre reinos fictícios. Mas já que não tem muito o que ele possa fazer… decidiu não nadar contra a maré. Ou não muito, pelo menos.

CURIOSIDADES:

Nasceu em 27 de Novembro. Possui 1,89m de altura. (O cara é alto). E é bissexual.

Sim, seu sobrenome real é Darling, exatamente como o de seus supostos "novos irmãos”. É uma grande coincidência, ou ironia do destino. Talvez esse seja o motivo de ele ter sido escolhido para esse conto, quem sabe. Ele não tem todas as respostas.

James sempre foi mais inclinado para a Pixar, portanto ele é muito mais familiarizado com filmes como Toy Story, Monstros S.A, Carros, Procurando Nemo, Carros e os Incríveis. Infelizmente, para ele, nenhum desses reinos se encontra presente ali. Que saco, né?

Das princesas ele sabe só o básico e é muito provável que ele se refira a elas como “aquela do vestido azul” ou “aquela do vestido amarelo” e provavelmente vai fazer confusão com todo mundo.

Ele tem uma rotina bem rígida de treinamentos, que consiste em 3 horas dentro da piscina de manhã e mais três à tarde, com uma hora e meia de academia a noite. Em suas pausas, ele costuma cochilar, e jogar videogame com seus amigos para espairecer. Ele vai tentar manter essa rotina de alguma forma, ou adaptar para fazer pelo menos metade disso, ou vai entrar em colapso.

Gosta muito de estar dentro de uma piscina.

Não gostou muito de sua descrição na história, afinal, ele não se vê como o irmão “estraga prazeres”. Ele achou isso um absurdo total (mas… bom, ele pode ser sim um pouco rabugento, especialmente no começo.)

Mesmo assim, ele ficou feliz e um tanto quanto aliviado por ter tido a sorte de fazer parte de um conto mais “normal” (afinal, os irmãos Darling vieram do mundo real, certo? Apenas de outro país, outra época…pelo menos é do que ele se lembra do filme que assistiu anos atrás.), e de ter um papel relativamente importante. No fim das contas, ele podia estar em uma situação bem pior. Ele podia ser a hiena número 4….

O rapaz tende a ser um pouquinho surtado (não agressivo, só de dar uns chiliques aqui e ali quando tá muito nervoso).

O que ele mais sente falta é da musica e dos jogos do mundo real.

MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT 1776 BECAUSE WHY NOT:

-William Duell stayed with the show the whole time it was on broadway and did not miss a single performance.

-previews were supposed to last longer on broadway, but it was cut short because on March 14th 1969 (55 years ago today) Howard Da Silva had a heart attack. The guys got him out of the theater and they revived him, they wanted to immediately take him to the hospital but he refused, and said he wanted to open the show, and then they could do with him as they pleased. So he opened the show with everybody, and then immediately as the curtain came down, an ambulance was waiting for him outside the theater and he got in, and he had surgery that night and was out of the show for MONTHS. Thank god they still had Rex Everhart from when the show was out of town because otherwise they would have been FUCKED. The cast did not have a party because of this whole incident. But unfortunately, the main three, Bill Daniels, Ken Howard and Howard da Silva, only did 5 shows together on broadway, Ken Howard would leave 3 months into the show, and the next time they’d all work together would be for the film.

-Howard Caine was “fired” by Jack Warner from the film because he kept complaining about the heat. When Peter Hunt found out about this, he went APE SHIT and got Caine back.

-there are many new actors for the 1776 film than original broadway cast themselves. Peter hunt got this all wrong. Yes, some of the original cast was there, but no everybody. The originals include David Ford, William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Ken Howard, Ralston Hill, Emory Bass, Roy Poole, Ronald Holgate, William Duell, Virginia Vestoff, Jonathan Moore and Charles Rule. (John Cullum was in the Broadway production, but he didn’t originate Rutledge. Same with James Noble but he had been Hancock, not Witherspoon) the new actors include Donald Madden, Ray Middleton, Leo Leyden, William Hansen, Rex Robbins, Patrick Hines, Daniel Keyes, Howard Caine, John Myhers, Blythe Danner and Stephen Nathan. And also all the silent men in congress who don’t have any lines. So yeah, a LOT more new actors then OG cast members.

-when the broadway company went to do the show for Richard Nixon at the White House, the cast were persuaded to do it by the producers telling them they’d all get pay raises. That never ended up happening, and Bill Daniels was LIVID. They were lied to just to do a fucking show for Nixon, because 98% of the cast hated him. After that performance, Howard Da Silva joined an anti-war protest outside of the White House, still in full costume. He HATED Nixon with a PASSION because of his involvement of his blacklisting from Hollywood.

-Bill Daniels missed more performances than he thought he did. In his book, he mentions he only missed 2 shows out of his entire 2 year run. That isn’t true. Paul David-Richards, the OG Josiah Bartlett, understudied John Adams, and in his bio in the playbill, it says he went on at the very last second for Bill, and ended up doing 5 shows that week because Bill got sick. And Jonathan Moore also did one show as Adams.

-The cast referred to the song “Cool, Cool Considerate Men” as “Cool Conservative Men”

😊 The Late Mrs. Willoughby (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #2) (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - another perfectly serviceable, decently entertaining historical cozy mystery feat. Austen characters and their progeny. Plot's pretty basic but it's still cute to see Jonathan Darcy (autistic king) and Juliette Tilney (mom's adventure sense, dad's common sense) solving murders again. The 'obstacles' to their romance are typical for a series like this but still annoying [tbh in more deft hands they might be more angsty and less annoying but it is what it is]

😍 The Charming Man (Zenaidamacrouras1, author; Late_to_party_81, artist) - 65K, shrinkyclinks no powers AU - just a delightful fic with adorable art (TEXTILE ART!) - I'll let the author's summary speak for itself: "Tldr: Steve has an eventful three weeks. Longer version: Steve Rogers is quite happy with his pleasantly simple life working as a graphic designer, chatting with his best friend Sam who has the desk next to his, eating the same gluten free sandwich for lunch every day, and staring out his office window hoping to catch a glimpse of The Charming Man walking by. Pope Francis and Lula discuss Ukraine and possible trips

Pope Francis and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Wednesday discussed the situation in Ukraine during a telephone conversation in which the South American leader invited the Argentine priest to visit his country soon.

“Lula and Francis spoke on the phone. The president thanked the pope for his work for peace in Ukraine and in the fight against poverty,” the Brazilian government said in a statement.

“In the conversation, Lula also thanked the Catholic Church in Brazil for its work to preserve the Amazon, against the forces that attack the rainforest, and for the Pope's mentions of solidarity with Brazil in recent years,” the document went on.

“Pope Francis accepted to examine the invitation and the possibility of a papal visit,” it added. This would be Francis' second trip to Brazil after the one he made in July 2013, a few months after being elected to the throne of Peter, on the occasion of World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro.

After the performance of 1776 at the White House concluded, Howard Da Silva joined an anti-war protest outside of the White House in full costume and everything 😭 as he should tbh.

That would be a sight to see. Benjamin Franklin protesting outside of the White House 😭💀

Da Silva had obviously been blacklisted from Hollywood several years before 1776. He wasn’t allowed to do any films for a long time. Only Broadway shows. So that’s what he did. He was originally supposed to DIRECT 1776 on broadway, but obviously that never happened and the wonderful Peter Hunt got the job. Da Silva obviously wasn’t happy about it but whatever.

He was a very temperamental guy and very vulnerable after the whole blacklisting shit. (He got blacklisted for apparently being too “liberal” from Richard Nixon and that’s why Da Silva hated him so much even more than he already did).

One day, while rehearsing the number “He Plays the Violin” with Buckley, she accidentally referred to the number as “her number” when it really isn’t, so Da Silva blew up on her and I quote: “THIS IS NOT YOUR NUMBER! DON’T YOU EVER CALL IT THAT AGAIN!THERE ARE 2 OTHER PEOPLE IN THE SONG WITH YOU! HOW DARE YOU, IF YOU EVER…” and Buckley being 21 at the time, was TERRIFIED of him. I would be too. So another time during the number, Franklin and Martha do this waltz, and the stage was oddly shaped for some reason, so Da Silva would twirl her around, and at one point they were at the edge of the stage and he would softly tilt her hand towards the orchestra pit to show her that her life is in his hands and he could very easily drop her into the pit. (Yikes). So Betty went to Onna White one day, and said “I think Mr Da Silva is gonna throw me into the pit” and Onna laughed and said he would never do that, she wouldn’t allow that, but Betty was still upset about it, so Onna said to take him out to dinner and get to know him.

When Buckley asked Da Silva to join her for dinner, he was very amused by the idea but he allowed her to do that anyway. And that changed everything. He told her the story of his life, and it was very sad. They became very close after that. He even asked her in his Will to sing “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell at his memorial service. That she did, and now it’s one of my favorite songs. It’s beautiful and it reminds me of the late great Howard Da Silva. He was such a character.

Luckily, he changed his ways during the movie. He was such a trooper and caused no more problems. But obviously we cannot excuse his behavior towards Betty before she took him out to dinner. That was horrible. But luckily, he changed.
