Today: the Anniversary of the Battle of Pichincha
From Wikipedia: “The encounter, fought in the context of the Spanish American wars of independence, pitted a Patriot army under General Antonio José de Sucre against a Royalist army commanded by Field Marshal Melchor Aymerich. The defeat of the Royalist forces loyal to Spain brought about the liberation of Quito, and secured the independence of the provinces belonging to the Real Audiencia de Quito, or Presidencia de Quito, the Spanish colonial administrative jurisdiction from which the Republic of Ecuador would eventually emerge.”
Antonio Jose de Sucre, 27 at the time of the battle

La Virgen del Panecillo, Quito, 2008.
Eighth day of Christmas.
Forty one meters tall atop Panecillo, about 200 meters above the center of Quito, the statue dominates the city. It is the tallest aluminum sculpture in the world and one of the tallest statues in South America, taller than the famed Cristo Redentor in Rio, though that is atop a much higher rise.
