Plates of Cake - Got A Feeling That I Live Here

This is apparently the final Plates of Cake album — but if that's true, the Brooklyn-based band is going out with a bang. Got A Feeling That I Live Here is maybe their best effort yet, packed with early Big Star jangle 'n' chime, Some Girls swagger and ramshackle Crooked Raininess. Recorded by Ladybug Transistor main-man Gary Olson, every song here is a gem, highlighting the Plates' very tasty interplay and sweet songwriting. The quartet sounds very comfortable with one another, but they're still pushing ahead. I love the way that the almost eight-minute "Nickel" is bookended by soaring jams, climbing into the clouds. A perfect start to your Bandcamp Monday.

This is, apparently, the final Plates of Cake album, the last edition in a set of excellent guitar-centric, unjustifiably under-the-radar indie rock albums from the band headed by Jonathan Byerley. It is, like all the rest clever and hard knocking, unusually literate but not constrained by it, and full of layered, shimmering guitar textures. Byerley and his long-time collaborator Joshua Carrafa spent the pandemic building their own gear, Byerley constructing a Stratocaster-style electric and refurbishing a used Vox AC15 amp, and Carrafa experimenting with home-made guitar pedals.

You can hear their obsession most clearly on “Nickel,” which is long and radiant with twining, Television-like guitar interplay, one player crystalline and full of clarity, the other jetting off in rough, distorted bursts, all held together by the rhythm section, Ian Burns on drums and Aileen Brophy on bass. Byerley doesn’t start singing until halfway through the cut, and even then his voice is a secondary thing, hedged in and overshadowed by luminous instrumental clangor. Normally, you should pay attention to Plates of Cake lyrics, but this track encourages zoning out and drifting off.

Elsewhere the material is more song-like, though the guitars still dominate. “So Crude” chimes like a lost Big Star song, while “Over or Forever” chugs motorik-ally but also gets lost in the daydream. For whatever reason, Byerley sings falsetto in a bunch of these songs, which is fine in small doses but a little strained at length. “Everyone Got Over Last Summer (Except for You)” kicks the hardest, the drums right up front all the way through.

Though smart as always, these songs aren’t as lyrically jaw-dropping as “Gallery Girl” from the last album. Got a Feeling That I Live Here rocks in a less complicated way than previous albums. And that makes sense. If you’ve got to go out, why not go out with a banger? We’ll miss you Plates of Cake.

Hey, fellas

This is the cakeverse, my brand new obsession and the trope that I only found out about like an hour ago, but it is peak, trust me.

Here's the basic set-up:

It's a typical omegaverse esque au where there's three types of people; forks, cakes and normies (i usually like calling them plates, for the themes). Normies are just regular people, obviously, but forks and cakes are something else entirely.

Cakes: Normal people who taste delicious. Cake's bodies and bodily fluids (saliva, sweat, tears, etc) all taste amazing, like cake (or other foods, if you do prefer), but they can only be tasted by Forks, otherwise they taste like normal people.

Fork: People who can't taste (and sometimes smell) anything at all outside of Cakes. Forks are unable to identify taste, sometimes they even lose it with time, but they are the only ones that can taste Cakes.

The au is very interesting and has a lot of implications, scenarios, and ways it can be written, but something that stood out to me is how much i feel like this would do numbers in several fandoms.

Like, I'll prolly make an analysis of this au later in a post once I read more works based from it, but for now I just wanna say that PLEASE GOD WRITE SOMETHING BASED ON IT I BEG!!!

So it really does look like he brought him cakes. Some theorize he's wearing a turtleneck in the shot where he's going into the shop, so it's possible it's a cut from later in the series after he knows Gabriel is there and it's not cakes? I think it's likely it is cakes, but who knows. All I can say is this reached farther than I thought and I'm gonna be so disappointed for all you and me if it's not cakes he's brought his angel (maybe from the coffee shop? idfk)

Banana brownie cake

Ingredients:

6 ripe bananas

240 grams of almond or peanut butter (1 cup)

1 table spoon of coconut oil

3 drops of vanilla extract

160 grams of cocoa powder (2/3 cup)

chocolate chips and/or thinly sliced almonds as sprinkles

1. heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius/400 F

2. mix it all together in a bowl, first with a spoon to smoosh the bananas, then use a mixer for 2 minutes to get a nice, even consistency

3. put a baking sheet on a baking pan, pour the mix in

4. sprinkle chocolate chips and/or thinly sliced almonds on top before popping it in the oven for 25 minutes on 180 C or 350 F

5. wait for it to cool
