Week 7 - Video Interview

This week we interviewed Gabby from the Berwick Dodgers Baseball Club. This is the first time any of our group members have had to record or conduct an interview, thus there were several skills and techniques that were learnt and applied during the interview.

Firstly, sound mixing proved to be quite difficult on our first attempt so getting Gabby to clap before conducting the interview was a very helpful skill that was utilised. Furthermore, the lighting, framing and question content were all considered prior to the interview to ensure that all the elements of the interview were suitable for editing. Player interviews allow sporting organisations to give fans access to a ‘behind the scenes’ look at their favourite players and get to know their club on a more intimate level (Dwyer, 2011). Buying into the humanity within a sporting organisation and exploring their player’s various personalities makes the club appear more down to earth to their fans and therefore more relatable. Whereas, neglecting these facets of a sporting organisation can create an image of ‘elitism’ and ‘exclusiveness’, making it difficult for fans to visualise themselves within the club as they don’t align with their core values (Yavuz, 2016).

Thus, making fans feel more attached to their club makes them more inclined to purchase memberships, merchandise and increase their overall involvement with the club. As previously mentioned, this benefits the fans by giving them more of an in-depth look into their club in addition to providing them with additional club-related content. Opposed to their on-field personalities, player interviews allow fans to see more grounded versions of their club’s members and get to know them on a more intimate level. Increasing the relatability and personal connection to their club.

4 Billion Robot Genders

I can’t remember if I already posted about this, but Wheel of Fortune (2010, Wii) has an interesting Dual Gender system, but I don’t mean in the traditional binary sense.

Instead, every Player object has a Gender field, which can be set to any of  4,294,967,296 genders.

EXCEPT it turns out it only uses this gender field if the player is a robot. Player objects representing Humans have a Gender field too, but it goes unused.

(This is because for Humans, their Player object is backed up by a Player Profile object, which contains it’s own Gender field, allowing any of the 4,294,967,296 possible genders)

Sadly, the getGender method in the scripting language conflates the two gender values, so it’s not like there’s 4,294,967,296 robot genders and then another  4,294,967,296 human genders. It’s the same 4,294,967,296 genders no matter what. 

Anyway as for how the game interprets those four billion genders... in the WFCommonJunction::getProfileTexture method it sets the value “0″ to mean “male”, and the remaining 4,294,967,295 genders to mean “female”.

That’s just to figure out which head to display on the player selector though. Player/PlayerProfile Genders might have different effects elsewhere. 

Also these genders only matter if you don’t have a Mii head. If you do, it uses the Mii’s gender. (The Mii-gender-system is outside the scope of this article)

Manually Adding Mods to BG3

This is a quick tutorial for those who either can't get a mod manager to work, or would prefer not to use one.

STEP 1: Download the mod

The mod will come in a ZIP folder, so extract that. Inside, you should have two files: A PAK file and a text file called "info".

STEP 2: Move the PAK to the Mods folder

Copy the PAK file into the following location: C:\Users\[NAME]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods.

(You may want to make a shortcut if you plan on adding lots of mods.)

STEP 3: Editing the Mod Settings

Open the modsettings.lsx file using Notepad or Notepad++ (I recommend the later) found in the following location: C:\Users\[NAME]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public.

Before adding any mods, it should look like this:

Copy and paste the ModuleShortDesc node for GustavDev and add it below the first, so it now looks like this:

Be mindful of where the nodes start and end!

Now, open the "info" text file included with the PAK mod you just installed. It should look something like this:

This is where you'll find the information you need to replace the duplicated ModuleShortDesc you made. So in the example above:

"Folder" is "shibariwaluigiNPCEdits"

"Name" is "Shibariwaluigi's NPC Hair Edits"

"UUID" is "865d37c5-8c70-4614-b3ce-08df1cb904c4"

"Version" is ":null"

(Note: 99% of mods will actually have a version, I don't know why this one doesn't, but I got it to work just fine by entering ":null".)

Your modsettings should now look like this:

Repeat these steps for as many mods as you want to add!

Modding on Patch 7 of Baldur's Gate 3

I realise Mac does not have Patch 7 yet, but preparing for users needing help when it does arrive for mac.

1. Delete your modsettings.lsx 

Mac: User/Documents/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/PlayerProfiles/Public Windows: %LocalAppdata%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public Linux: SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1086940/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/PlayerProfiles/Public

2. Launch Baldurs Gate 3 Mod Manager / Vortex / or your mod manager of choice and check for updates. In BG3MM press F7 to bring up the update checker.

You can also use the in game mod manager (IGMM) as well.

For me I use both BG3MM and IGMM without issue, however I do advise where possible to mostly stick to one. You can download mod.io mods via their website page here: Baldur's Gate 3 - Mods or Baldur's Gate 3 Mods - mod.io

In fact if you like increasing your party size there is a mod I highly suggest: Adjustable Party Limit for Baldur's Gate 3 - mod.io as it also covers making sure you don't run into those pesty bugs we can get with party increase.

4. Go to your Mods folder:

Mac: User/Documents/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/Mods Windows: %LocalAppdata%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods Linux: SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1086940/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/Mods

5. If you use mods such as ImprovedUI make sure to have the version for Patch 7 and remove all old Patch 6 versions of that mod from the above mods folder, as it states on the mod page.

6. remove Mod Fixer from your mods folder. It is no longer required in Patch 7.

7. You should be ready to launch your game.

A note that the game currently labels non mod.io mods with an alarming triangle icon with a ! in the centre. It is okay to press continue when the pop up shows up.

If using controller switch to keyboard and mouse, as there may be a bug not letting you press continue on controller.

This icon is just to inform you that some of the mods are from external sources, and to also give you a chance to remove the mods from your load order should you wish before continuing. 

Mod.io and external mods such as from nexus mods work fine together.

Temporary fix for anyone who's unable to play patch 5 of BG3 due to the "different mod settings" warning

You'll need: - lslib tool - Notepad++ (or any other notepad program) - To back up your saves before touching them (on Windows, mine is located at %LOCALAPPDATA%/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/PlayerProfiles/Public/Savegames/Story)

Instructions: - Run ConverterApp.exe from the lslib tool - Click the PAK / LSV Tools tab - Under Extract Package, click the three dots to the right of Package path and find your chosen save's .lsv file in your save directory (it'll be inside any of the folder's along with an image) - Click the three dots to the right of Destination path and direct it to some random folder for now (it can be deleted later) - Hit Convert - Click the LSX / LSB / LSF /LSJ Tools tab in LSLib - Click the three dots to the right of Input file path and find the meta.lsf you just extracted, then copy and paste that directory - Inside the Output file path box, paste the entire meta.lsf directory, but change .lsf to .lsx - Delete your old meta.lsf - Open the meta.lsx file in Notepad++ (or any other notepad program) and scroll down until you find the mod(s) preventing you from loading your saves - Delete the entire paragraph of said mod, from <node id="ModuleShortDesc"> to </node> - Save - In LSLib, convert the meta.lsx to meta.lsf much like you did above, just in reverse order - Delete the meta.lsx file - In LSLib, click on the PAK / LSV Tools tab - Under Create Package, click the three dots to the right of Source path and find the extracted folder you've been working in - Click the three dots to the right of Package path, name the file the same as the original .lsv, then set it to a random folder - Click Create Package - Copy and replace your newly created .lsv file into the same directory you originally used under %LOCALAPPDATA%/Larian Studios/Baldur's Gate 3/PlayerProfiles/Public/Savegames/Story

That's it! If you did everything correctly, you should be able to open your game and load that edited save file just fine.

Hey, saw your mods post, and this is what worked for me.

First, you need to delete and re-download the bg3 mod manager, don't open it tho. If you don't already, have your mods pak files saved somewhere handy.

Then you need to go into file explorer and delete the modsettings.lsx file. Make sure you can see hidden files in your settings. Follow this path: This PC\Windows(C:)\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public

After deleting, verify games files and launch! Now go into the official mod manager and download the improved UI mod from there.

When you exit out and launch the new bb3mm it should no longer interfere. Put all your other mods back, you should no longer need mod fixer or the old improved UI.

What I need: PC: Save file with a specific cutscene you want a picture of (often useful for lightning or poses, especially romance scenes.) ⇨ You can find your savefiles in \AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public\Savegames\Story. ⇨ Copy the folder you want to a different folder, right click and compress to ZIP File. Upload this to an online storage space or ask for my Discord to share it with me. I'll take as many screenshots as I can.

PS5(/PC optionally): Send me your Tav's character creation sliders. These screenshots will only be early Act 1 as I can't play through the entire game. You can write these down or take screenshots. ⇨ Important: For things like tattoos, hair highlights & greying intensity, make-up settings, make sure to include the numbers & color names!

In case of mods: PLEASE let me know which ones you use. Best choice would be to either send links OR a zip file with the mods you use.

how to roll back your game version & play the early access version of bg3

because all the people in my notes talking about being sad about never getting to play during ea are making me sad. you can still get in there!! easily!! and you don't even have to uninstall the current version to do it! you can have the current game & the ea version at the same time and switch between them by just moving around a few files

all you need to do is follow a slightly tweaked version of this guide on how to roll back your game to a previous version--slightly tweaked in that this is a guide for people whose games are broken and yours isn't (hopefully?) but more on that in a sec

you need two different id numbers to download, the "main" depot's (1086941) and the "bin" depot's (1419652). the very last update to the early access game before its full release was hotfix #32. if you're just interested in playing the early access version in general, i'd suggest going with this one! but i'll also be putting in the ids for the various other patches for anyone interested in earlier versions of ea

the "main" (1086941) id is 2986558115270870303 and the "bin" (1419652) is 3491586966951526173, so in step 3, your console commands would be "download_depot 1086940 1086941 2986558115270870303" and then "download_depot 1086940 1419652 3491586966951526173" (without the quotation marks)

after you've gotten that downloaded, those slight tweaks come into play. since your game is (hopefully) not broken, in step 6, when it tells you to "Go to %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\ and delete there everything except PlayerProfiles folder," make a new folder somewhere easily accessible (i just keep mine on my desktop homescreen), give it a recognizable name like "bg3 full release" or smth, and toss all those files into it for safekeeping instead of deleting them

then, make a copy of the PlayerProfiles folder to go into %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3, and continue with the rest of the guide from there

hopefully, everything should work and you'll be able to play the early access version!

if you need to make space, you can just delete the files in %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3, replace them with the original files from this folder that you moved to their own folder earlier, and go back to playing the full version of the game

OR if you have enough space and just want to go back to playing the full release version for a while with the option to go back to ea later, you can make a second folder in that same easily accessible location, name it something like "bg3 ea," and move the ea files from %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3 there for safekeeping while you switch the original files back in. and then whenever you want to go back to ea, you just switch them out again!

important note: back up your saves often!! if you forget and go to launch the regular full release version out of habit instead of launching via the exe file, it can & will completely wipe your ea saves!

if you just want to play ea generally, that's all there is to it, but for anyone interested in the earlier versions, i'm also including the ids for everything back to patch 5 or 6 (more on that below) under the cut!

steamdb's "main" depot ids go back all the way to the beginning of early access in october 2020, but the "bin" ids only go back to september 2021. i have no idea why or if there's a way to get around this to allow access to the super early versions of the game (let me know if you know), but from what i recall, most of the big changes came post-patch 6 (which dropped in october 2021), so i don't think you're missing all that much here

i'm going to list 2 different versions for each patch--the version of the patch that dropped and then the very last hotfix of that patch that was released before the next patch's release. i strongly recommend using the pre-patch hotfix versions since they'll be the ones that's already fixed any major bugs found in the patch, including the ones that caused crashes (which weren't common but did very much happen from time to time), but since there were sometimes changes made in the hotfixes between patches, i'm including the raw, sometimes buggy initial patch itself, too, for anyone who wants the true ea experience

whenever a patch dropped, there was usually a patch announcement post that included a long list of everything added/changed and a community update post that highlighted & went into more detail about some of the biggest, most significant additions/changes shortly after. i'll be linking both of them for each version so you can see what was added in each patch & decide which you'd like to see!

Step 1: Unzip the .zip file you downloaded to find a .pak file and a file called "info".

Step 2: Place the .pak file in the following folder: C:\Users\[Name]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods

Step 3: Open the "modsettings" file using Notepad found in the following folder: C:\Users\[Name]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public

Step 4: Copy the following and paste it immediately below, so you should have two identical nodes back to back like this:

Step 5: Replace the Folder, Name, UUID, and Version fields with the information found in the "info" file included with the .pak file. So for example, if you're installing the popular Basket of Equipment mod, it would look like this:

You have to do this for every mod you want to install.

If you don't have an "info" file, that means the modder deleted it because they did not consider that some people prefer or have to install mods manually. Unfortunately you either cannot use that mod, or you need to go through the process of extracting all the files and then repacking it yourself using the Modders Multitool.
