Cartaz para LETTER FROM THE POND, Agosto 2022
LETTER FROM THE POND, curta-metragem de Lana Almeida e Manuel Bivar, integrada no projecto theponds.info

Enchylium polycarpon (syn. Collema polycarpon)
Shaly Jelly Lichen, gilled tarpaper lichen
Hey, it’s been way to long since I brought a jelly lichen to the proverbial table! Jelly lichens get their texture form the Nostoc cyanbacteria that make up their photobiont. E. polycarpon is a foliose jelly lichen that forms round cushions 2-10 cms wide. The individual lobes spread out radially from the surface and are deeply branched, and the upper surface is dark olive to black. Keep in mind that they are squishier when wet, but gets thinner and leafier-looking when dry. They produce numerous glossy, plane, apothecia toward the center at the terminal tips of the lobules or on lobe margins. You can find these squishy boys on moistened, exposed rock surfaces pretty much all over--ok, not in the Australia but most everywhere else. It is rare, but widespread. Jelly lichens, being dark and gelatinous, can be difficult to identify with the naked eye. Often times, the internal structure and the spores have to be viewed under a microscope to determine the species. For example, E. polycarpon house 8 spores at a time in individual asci (singular ascus: pouches that hold spores in the apothecia), and the ascopores are pointed, and divided into 3 subsections. But hey, if you don’t feel like cross-sectioning an apothecial disk to count the spores, at least you will be able to recognize that you are looking at a jelly lichen, and can appreciate its adorable squishiness.

#TuesdayTidbits How to Clean Water Spots Off Your Leaves
I recently purchased an elk horn fern (Polypodium polycarpon ‘Grandiceps‘). It is a gorgeous plant but is covered with hard water spots. Until I wrote my first book, I didn’t know exactly how to get them off. Elvin McDonald gave me the tip to use lemon juice. It works like a charm!
