Time for another edition of my bi-annual new manga recs
Super Psychic Policeman Chojo: A fun comedy manga about a psychic policeman who is kind of a dick (but in a fun way) and the antiques he and his partner get into. A very enjoyable read. Background characters include two kids Chojo bullies that are Ness and Lucas from Mother as well as a card game obsessed kid named Itz Miturn
Navigatoria: The Earth has finally has claimed its first planetary territory. Each nation sends one student to represent their nation in a challenge to see who gets to claim this new land. Our protag Manabu couldnt care less about representing his oppressive controlling home land and seeks to win solely so he can create a place free enough for him to be with his sweetheart, a romance forbidden by his country. Think Highschool Shonen meets Political Thriller.
Centuria: 101 slaves are taken aboard a ship set for sale in a far off land. During the journey a vicious storms hits and the crew decides the only way they live is if their cargo doesn't. After 99 of the slaves are killed the Sea God intervenes, saying it will provide its protection and the power of 100 men as long as one of the two remaining slaves agree to die. Our protagonist volunteers but the other slave, a pregnant women who has grown close to our hero makes the choice for him by removing her unborn child from herself and jumping to the sea. The young man now charged with unworldly power and the sense of duty to protect this infant deals with the crew and makes his way to this new land for a new life.
And last one for today: Psych House: A light hearted manga about a house for young people with supernatural abilities. Only Six chapters in so far but it is very enjoyable. Main character wears a bucket for a hat, how can it not be fun?

One stupid thing about Psych House isn't the manga itself, but how Japanese parents are against it because one of the main characters is a shop-lifter...said shop-lifter is an impoverished starving high schooler whose mother is in the god damn hospital.
A billion manga featuring overly sexualized minors and they say nothing, but a main character doing crimes out of necessity as a commentary on health care and poverty-THAT is where they draw the fucking LINE?!
Japan can be...REALLY fucking dumb sometimes, not sure if more or less dumb than the US, but they're up there, they're up there.

I should probably be catching up on all the manga I'm behind on, but me being me I decided to check out some new Jump titles instead, starting with this here, Psych House.
The premise is very simple; in this particular version of Anime Japan, some people have supernatural abilities called Psychs. Our protagonist, Nemuru, is a kind but somewhat cheeky young boy who can change his size, and in the manga's inagural chapter he helps out a girl named Kotone, who's been using her ability to teleport objects to filch from a local grocery store.
I'd describe the manga as....endearingly amateurish, maybe? The bones of a good series are here, but it's difficult to take too seriously anything that treats stealing---especially petty theft of food, by a starving person, from a market---as a huge moral dilemma. Especially when, as in Kotone's case, her situation is so ridiculously pitiable. Her mom's in a coma for no obvious reason! She's been starving herself because she knows stealing is wrong! She's a good girl at heart who just wants to make her ma proud by going to college and getting a good job! Oh no, oh my! It's all a little much.
Keeping in mind that Jump's target audience is still at least ostensibly young boys, maybe this kind of pat Morality 101 stuff isn't the worst thing in the world, but kids deserve nuance, too. Maybe that's why Kotone gets off scott-free here when Nemuru invites her to live at the sharehouse alluded to by Psych House's title.
I could see this becoming funnier and more compelling with a bit more focus, so I'll probably keep up with it for at least a few chapters. After that, who knows?
By the way! Don't confuse this with Hiimote House, an anime of a somewhat similar name. That series has basically the same premise but could not be more different from this one. Although, that said, give Hiimote House a try sometime if you're in the mood for something delightfully weird.
