"The book has seen immediate success in 2023, debuting as a number one New York Times bestselling novel. Readers love the irreverent fantasy world and the witty characters trying to make a living in a villain’s evil lair. Sure, the villain equips the lair with a top-notch break room, HR, and healthcare, but there are still the trappings of a villain’s daily activities, reminding employees they work for a bad guy. If you, too, can’t get enough of this world, read on for eight funny, romantic, and fantastical books like Assistant to the Villain!
The following books like Assistant to the Villain give readers who are eagerly awaiting book two something to read in the meantime. They are a combination of fantasy romance books that have a dash of action, romance, and comedy to keep any Hannah Nicole Maehrer fan happy. I am head over heels for the odd little subgenre myself, so I guarantee these books like Assistant to the Villain will hit the spot."

Another EXCELLENT release by writeblr's own @ashen-crest, I cannot say enough how much I absolutely loved this book. If you haven't checked out the Lutesong Trilogy yet, I highly recommend you go check it out. The characters are absolutely delightful, this is one of the few (only?) romances I've ever read that had me actually literally crying at the end, and the worldbuilding is really reminiscent of the spirit world in ATLA (especially the episodes with Hei Bai and the Painted Lady). If you like anxious bard bois, nerdy determined politician girls, and friendly overprotective feral shapeshifter spirit children, this is the book for you

chayscribbles’ monthly writing update ☆ september 2022
oh hey there. haven't done one of these in a while huh.
☆ STATISTICS.
words written: embarrassingly few
projects worked on: Andromeda Rogue, Andromeda Rising, Secret Space WIP :)
proudest accomplishment: ummm i read a lot
books read: The Stray Spirit by R. K Ashwick (aka writeblr's very own @ashen-crest!!!), Fortuna by Kristyn Merbeth, Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (just started)
☆ GENERAL COMMENTS.
(i know this is a writing update but i really like putting little reading updates here as well lol. book thoughts in short: Stray Spirit was a 5/5 and very cute and cozy; Fortuna was a 4/5 and is VERY Chaycore with a family of smugglers in space trying to stop an interplanetary war while dealing with their own personal drama; and Nona i've just begun but i am already losing my mind in the best way.)
(maybe if people are interested next time i'll make a separate post for reading updates.)
writing was honestly abysmal this month, i had a few flashes of motivation but most of the time when i sat down to try to write all i would get was a sad trombone noise in my brain. i really hesitated to even make an update for this month but here it is. it's gonna be short.
more specific wip-related comments + featured excerpt below.
☆ COMMENTS: ANDROMEDA ROGUE / ANDROMEDA RISING
the climax continues to vex me. every time i think i've figured it out i realize i haven't figured out anything at all. i'm too close to the end for me to give up now but i am sooo frustrated.
i'm hoping to be able to just blitz through this final act during NaNo just to get it over with, but that means i need to actually figure out what the final act looks like so i don't have to think about it in November. so while using October to plan it out would be a good idea i also feel like i should take a prolonged break before November... but i won't be able to relax until i know i have a plan... so basically pain and suffering <3
in the meantime, i've decided, against my better judgement, to start rereading AR1 right away instead of waiting to finish AR3. i'm hoping it might give me a bit of motivation and maybe inspiration for this bit i'm stuck on. (it hasn't, but it has reminded me of bits that i'd forgotten about that are better than i thought they were so that's something i guess.)
☆ COMMENTS: SECRET SPACE WIP
i'm still not ready to talk about this wip on writeblr but in between bouts of AR driving me mad i worked out Secret Space WIP's plot a bit to try to keep myself sane :')
also wrote a few scenes in the first act. i'm already at 7.5k total for this draft oops :')))
if you want ✨exclusive access✨tho you can dm me for the link to my discord server where i have spilled some beans on it ;))
☆ FEATURED EXCERPT.
sorry for being such a downer in this update. have some FinnPetra Fluff/Angst with no context <3
“Come back to me,” she whispered.
He knew it was foolish to make such a promise, but still, he gently took her hand between his, the best he could in the tangle of leaves, and softly said, “I, Finneas Robyn Becker, swear by the stars that I will do whatever I can to come back to you.”
A shiver coursed through Petra's body as he completed the ritual by tracing his middle finger down her palm, the pad barely brushing over her skin, then brought her hand up to reverently press her knuckles to his lips.
☆ TAGLISTS. let me know if you want to be added/removed to either.

Extraverted | Sensing | Thinking | Prospecting
Entrepreneurs always have an impact on their immediate surroundings – the best way to spot them at a party is to look for the whirling eddy of people flitting about them as they move from group to group. Laughing and entertaining with a blunt and earthy humor, entrepreneur personalities love to be the center of attention. If an audience member is asked to come on stage, entrepreneurs volunteer – or volunteer a shy friend. Entrepreneurs are the likeliest personality type to make a lifestyle of risky behavior. They live in the moment and dive into the action – they are the eye of the storm. People with the entrepreneur personality type enjoy drama, passion, and pleasure, not for emotional thrills, but because it’s so stimulating to their logical minds. They are forced to make critical decisions based on factual, immediate reality in a process of rapid-fire rational stimulus response.
A S T R O L O G Y
♈︎ SUN : ARIES
The ruler of Aries is the planet Mars, which symbolizes energy, health, fighting spirit and leadership skills. People born under this sign are courageous and decisive in most situations in life. They do any work with enthusiasm and confidence in their abilities, but they often lack deliberation and patience. They have great enthusiasm and desire to always try new things, and they are creative and intelligent enough to handle even the most difficult tasks. They use their extra energy to play sport and they especially like risky and physically demanding types of sport activities. They are physically very talented and courageous and that is the reason why such a high percentage of top athletes were born under this zodiac sign. If they fail, they can get irritated and angry, but their emotions do not last long, because in their essence they are not bad people and it will waste their time. Their occasional impatience is their stumbling block. They should therefore choose friends who they know well and who they trust, so that they will accept their advice and who will slow down and rectify their hastiness. Despite these shortcomings they are people with integrity who like to keep their promises.
♏︎ MOON : SCORPIO
Scorpio Moon in Scorpio creates the need to delve into your feelings as deep as possible and this brings great vulnerability. You never forget anything that was done to you. It’s hard to force you to do anything. Rarely, it is possible to influence you with kindness. You need a deep emotional relationship, even if it is not easy and you are forced to change many things. Shallow relationships do not satisfy you, because they are not purifying enough. You have an unmistakable ability to detect the emotional state of others, even if they try to hide it. This gives you the ability to very effectively hurt or heal others. Your emotions can be extreme, from sympathy to contempt, from passion to coldness. It is necessary to get rid of the fear of betrayal, abandonment, and that you lose what you love. If you do not get rid of your fear, you will lose exactly the things you are afraid of losing.
♊︎ ASCENDANT : GEMINI
Gemini Ascendant is associated with curiosity and interest in how things work. Versatility and adaptability are your advantages, but these traits can lead to fragmentation of interests. These people can do everything, but they do not excel in anything. They do not like to choose only one thing if they have more options. Their mission is to disseminate information. If the horoscope has a water or earth character, then this person needs to develop analytical and objective thinking. If it is of airy and fiery nature, then the mind is very restless, you understand everything very quickly, but only by the head, body and emotions remain untouched.
Sun and Moon Summary
Excitement and thrill are always a part of your life. You move ahead in the world because of great concentration and ambition. You love competition as a result. You are defiant and independent and at times this can be your undoing. Aggression is hard for you to restrain and you do not accept compromise well. Those who stand in your way get no sympathy and you have a drive for life that includes the entire spectrum of the spiritual, emotional and sensual. Mars rules both of these signs and according to mythology Mars also rules passion and war. The result is an aggressive person. Regardless of what you do, fun generally involves a fight. This includes business, love and life itself. Doing something partway is not part of your character because you are an extremist in spirit and thought. The result when you fail is a complete tragedy and when you succeed a total victory. Advice should be listened to at times though, so the next time there is a disagreement, do not be so resistant and prepare for battle, but rather listen carefully. You might learn something. Others might have something helpful to say so compromise sometimes. You are very creative and have an enormous amount of willpower, but you cannot really succeed until you learn to work in cooperation with other people. Constructive and positive outlets need to be found for your aggression so they can be channeled for success. Your concentration is good and you have an excellent intellect. You want to dig deep with your pursuits and are not happy just to get superficial impressions. There are Aries-Scorpio social activists, scientists and scholars. You have the power of self-rejuvenation as do all Moon in Scorpio people. You may get in trouble at times or even fail, but you always have the ability to bounce back. You are a courageous and freedom loving person. Sports like swimming, jogging or tennis as well as creative endeavors like art can release anger better than getting upset with your spouse, co-worker or children. There is a pioneer inside you and great accomplishments are possible with your ambition and enthusiasm. Exploration of the world and seeking adventure when you are young are very likely. You can be very hard to control early in life though, so some professional training is a good idea. Great success later in life is attainable if you are guided properly.
Zodiac Compatibility
Best: Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Leo Worst: Cancer, Capricorn, Taurus, Pisces
M O R A L   A L I G N M E N T : C H A O T I C  N E U T R A L
A chaotic neutral character follows their whims. They are an individualist first and last. They value their own liberty but doesn’t strive to protect others’ freedom. They avoid authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. A chaotic neutral character does not intentionally disrupt organizations as part of a campaign or anarchy. To do so, they would have to be motivated by either good (and a desire to liberate other) or evil (and a desire to make those different from themselves suffer). A chaotic neutral character may be unpredictable, but their behavior is not totally random. They are not as likely to jump off a bridge as to cross it. Chaotic neutral is the best alignment you can be because it represents true freedom from both society’s restrictions and a do-gooder’s zeal. Chaotic neutral can also be a dangerous alignment when it seeks to eliminate all authority, harmony, and order in society.
A B O U T (tw abuse)
Minica is the second born child of Francis Faust and Dahlia Hannigan. Coming from a long lineage of hunted witches, Dahlia had kept the truth hidden about her daughter’s nature and attempted to stifle her magic as long as she possibly could. Why you ask? Dahlia would say it was to protect her young child from the dangers of the occult world. The real reason? It was a hidden fear and jealousy that her daughter had magic running through her veins and she did not.
This made growing up difficult. Especially in her teen years, where her father’s drinking and abuse would worsen. All the while her mother’s neglect couldn’t offer any solace in a toxic household. At the ripe age of thirteen, Minica began noticing she had a unique set of abilities she could tap into. Sudden bursts of magic, stoked by anger and fear, would start to become unmanageable in an unwitting child. Though she tried her best to hide this from her parents.
Near the end of high school, Minnie would find kinship in a small teenage coven, where she started to unravel the truth about herself, her abilities, and the history of her own family. . . Confronting her parents only proved to be a step in the wrong direction, as the use of magic brought upon an irrational anger and fear. They attempted to bind her magic, in some sort of botched ritual gone wrong. Bound and tormented in the basement for days, Minnie would tap into a darkness that helped set her free. The flickering of a fire that was used to threaten her own life would magically engulf her family and their home.
It was when the Faust residence burned down, that Minica had left the town running. She would begin a solo journey searching for herself and trying to find more answers. However, everything kept drawing her back to Ashwick, and for as long as she tried to stay away, the recent passing of her mother finally drew her back in.
Q U I C K  F A C T S
She grew up in Ashwick but has been gone for over 10 years. She’s been back in town for only a few months.
Her mother recently passed away from a mysterious illness that she is investigating.
Her father has been permanently hospitalized from the burns he suffered on the night the home was set ablaze. She has not seen him since.
She is a recent addition to the Nox Coven and has become fairly advanced in her abilities.
Razzles are her favorite candy.
W A N T E D  C O N N E C T I O N S
FAMILIAL: She has one younger brother, as well as cousins and aunts/nephews that could live in the area! They would be estranged, so rekindling a relationship would be a priority!
FRIENDLY: Friends from work (she works at the bar), coven friends, or even girls from the makeshift high school coven she was in would be wanted!
ENEMIES: She gets along with most people, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that she is an absolute menace. She gets into trouble a lot, and that could be a source for conflict. Can be something big or little. Just give me drama!
EXES/FLINGS: Self-explanatory. Could be an old high school sweetheart, something that fizzled out awkwardly, or maybe in a big catastrophe. The more conflict the merrier.

heyy Tori, happy STS!! I'm curious to know about your recent reads - what was your favorite book/short story/screenplay/whatever that you've read this year? any that disappointed you (feel free to ignore if you don't wanna spill any tea lol)? or, if you haven't read anything, first, I see you, and second, any book you'd particularly like to get your hands on?
Hey, Cee! Thanks for the ask, love!
I'm gonna real with you, the only reason I even remember what I've read is because of Goodreads. 🤣 I'm realizing more every day that I have very little object permanence-- or whatever permanence, I don't know.
So let's see a few highlights:
All The Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace
So, if nothing else, this book kept me on my toes the entire time. I'd think I knew where the story was going and it would go the complete other way. While the princess and the mermaid don't get together like a small part of me was hoping, I'm incredibly attached to the depictions of these characters. Looking forward to reading the sequel!
A Field Guide To Mermaids by Emily B. Martin
This made 7-year-old me very happy. Not only is it written like mermaids are simply another part of our world, it's illustrated absolutely stunningly. Ms. Martin, you have my whole heart. ♥️
A Rival Most Vial by R. K. Ashwick
New comfort read acquired!! Oh my gosh, I don't even know how to sum up how happy this book made me. Such a wonderful read, with a stunning world, and absolutely delightful characters. I rooted for these two idiot boys the entire way through-- harder than I think I've ever done before. ❤️ Thank you thank you thank you.
Skyhunter by Marie Lu
Oh. My. Gosh. So coming from one of my favorite and most trusted authors, I went in with high hopes. And they were beyond exceeded. This is such a stunning world filled with glorious characters. I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel. Thank you, Ms. Lu for another lovely read.
Daughter of the Deep
Absolutely stunning! I always forget how fantastic Mr. Riordan's novels are and it has been several years since I've gotten to read one for the very first time. Such a rich and beautiful story pulled from a world many are unfamiliar with. Adding to his collection growing on my bookshelf.
Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer
This is one of my new favorite romance novels! And I'm still internally squealing about it! Honestly, I was a little doubtful to begin with. I've become extremely critical of romance novels over the past year or so, but I knew I had to give one of my favorite authors a shot. And I was not disappointed. The main character is downright WRONG in this book, which I absolutely adore, and so it's more of a self-discovery (even though the love interest is delightful as well). Thank you, Marissa Meyer, for making me grin at a book for four solid hours.

“Did Pearce give you money for lunch?” she asked Ambrose. It was odd seeing her and Banneker without their usual shop attire. No gloves, no aprons, no goggles or welding masks. Simply tunics and vests, like what Ambrose wore.
“Ah, no, he didn’t,” he said, looking through his coin purse. “But I should have enough.”
Banneker rolled his eyes. “I got this one.”
Before Ambrose could protest, the artificer dropped a handful of coins into his purse. Ambrose stiffened and pawed through them, trying to count the new coins. If Master Pearce noticed the extra money…
“I’ll give you half-off on your next vial,” he said quickly. “That should settle the debt—“
“It’s not a debt, it’s a gift,” Sherry sighed. “Now, if you get lost, we’ll be in Vendor’s Alley for most of the day. You need anything, we’ll be right there.” She squeezed his shoulder.
Welcome to Potion Con by R. K. Ashwick.

ARC Review: A Rival Most Vial by R. K. Ashwick
Tumblr media
I received a free copy of this book from the author (@ashen-crest) and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. However, I now have a paperback copy on order because Holy Sh-- this was so good!!
R. K. Ashwick made herself comfortable on my list of favourite authors after her debut novel, 'The Stray Spirit'. There's a freshness to her authorial voice that makes her books an utter delight to read, and time slips away from me the moment I start the first page.
With 'A Rival Most Vial' she's cemented her spot in my top ten favourite authors. I didn't anticipate buying any paperbacks this year, I've got bills and a holiday to save for, but I simply had to shuffle around some finances to add this one to my shelf.
The rivalry between Ambrose and Eli is perfectly balanced. It doesn't cross into anything groan-worthy, and I didn't get second-hand embarrassment for either of them, which is a common reason romance-rivalry's aren't commonly a favourite trope of mine.
But, as usual, Ashwick had me falling in love with all her characters. Ambrose and Eli, of course, but also all the other members of Rosemond street. Dawn is a delight, Tom's freaking adorable, Sherry's brilliant and Banneker is a laugh, but besides the main characters, Grim's quiet protectiveness might be my favourite.
I don't know what else to tell you without giving away spoilers, because this plot was so perfectly woven together that every element I want to gush about, leads to another that I want you to read and discover on your own.
All in all, I adored this read. It's my first paperback purchase of the year; potentially my only paperback purchase of the year, and another of Ashwick's wonderful stories to add to my collection.

"In this age of ever-expanding nerdery, there is a fantasy romance book for every type of geek—including, of course, those of us who love a good tabletop role-playing game like Dungeons & Dragons. To understand the existence of DnD-inspired fantasy romance books, you only have to look to the growing popularity of both DnD and high fantasy romances."

Day 14 of the #writerfriendschallenge - Currently Reading?
I don't read much when I'm writing. I tend to alternate. Read and no writing, or writing and no reading.
So my TBR pile is getting frankly ridiculous because I've been writing a lot lately.
I do try and read one ARC from a fellow indie a month though!
Recent Reads include;
Soul of the Sorceress by Cassandra Diviak
A Rival Most Vial by R K Ashwick
And I STILL have The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff on the coffee table waiting for me to get to it.
