Greece evaluates sale of Mirage 2000 jets to India 🇮🇳
Although the expected selling price is modest, Athens sees an opportunity for broader strategic cooperation with New Delhi.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/08/2024 - 19:28in Military
The leadership of the Hellenic Air Force is exploring the possibility of selling the 18 Mirage 2000 EGM/BGM to India, a proposal that was communicated to the Prime Minister's office and the Ministry of National Defense of Greece.
The aircraft served until 2022 in the 332ª "Hawk" Squadron, and most of them are not in flight condition, while some were cannibalized to keep the others flying. However, it seems that there is fertile ground between the two parties and do not rule out the possibility of the subject of the sale of the fighters to be discussed during the future visit of Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis to New Delhi.
Squadron 332 struggled with problems of availability of the Mirage 2000, resulting in the abandonment of some aircraft on the runways of Tanagra and others cannibalized because they were beyond the operational life.
At the end of 2023, New Delhi decided to communicate its interest to the Greek part in acquiring used Mirage 2000, as it plans to keep these fighters in service for at least another decade. Athens, aiming to further strengthen defense relations with India, has already decided to sell the retired Mirage. The Air Force General Staff expects to profit
Tumblr media
However, the criterion for its sale is more political than economic. In the General Staff of the Greek Air Force, which is directly involved, they do not expect profits. On the contrary, they maintain modest expectations regarding the selling price of aircraft, which are unfortunately in poor condition. The experts' estimate is that, at best, they will be sold for a few million euros.
These 18 Mirage, which carried the weight of the interceptions in the skies of the Aegean Sea, were withdrawn from service in January 2022 with the arrival of the Rafale. The aircraft were inactivated due to lack of support long before the arrival of the new French fighters. However, there are still users of the French delta fighter, such as India, which maintains about 50 aircraft in three combat squads and may be interested in supplementing any losses or renewing its stock of spare parts for existing ones.
The Hellenic Air Force is also evaluating the future of the newest Mirage 2000-5 operated by Squadron 331 "Teseu". Although the support contract has improved its availability, concerns about its compatibility with evolving technologies and high integration costs, such as the proposed Link-16 terminal, have led to a reassessment.

Tumblr media
A second batch of three Rafale fighter jets arrived at Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat on Wednesday evening after flying non-stop from Istres airbase in France, taking the total number of aircraft in the fleet to eight, officials said.
This is nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore.
The first batch of Rafale jets was inducted into the IAF on September 10. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on October 5 said that the induction of all 36 Rafale jets will be completed by 2023.
These are India's first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. The newly inducted fleet has been carrying out sorties in eastern Ladakh, where Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in a bitter border row for over five months.
The Rafale aircraft flew for over eight hours before landing at an IAF base. They covered a distance of over 3700 nautical miles with three in-flight refuellings. Read More

First batch of 5 Rafale jets takes off from France for India
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: The first batch of five Rafale jets on Monday took off from France for India, officials said. The multi-role fighter aircraft are scheduled to arrive at Ambala air force station on Wednesday, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 Rafale jets for the Indian Air Force under a Rs 59,000-crore deal. The fleet is expected to significantly boost the IAF’s combat capabilities at a time when India is locked in a tense border row with China in eastern Ladakh. Indian Ambassador to France Jawed Ashraf interacted with IAF pilots before they took off from France. “Bon Voyage: Indian Ambassador to #France interacts with the Indian pilots of the Rafale. Congratulates and wishes them a safe flight to India with a single hop,” the Indian Embassy in Paris tweeted.

The first squadron of the Rafale jets will be stationed at Ambala air base. The five Rafales are scheduled to be inducted into the IAF on Wednesday afternoon. However, an IAF spokesperson said a formal induction ceremony will be held in mid-August. Official sources said the Rafale jets are likely to be deployed in the Ladakh sector as part of the IAF’s efforts to enhance its operational capabilities along Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in view of the border row with the country. The aircraft is capable of carrying a range of potent weapons. European missile maker MBDA’s Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile and Scalp cruise missile will be the mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets. Meteor is the next generation of BVR air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) designed to revolutionise air-to-air combat. The weapon has been developed by MBDA to combat common threats facing the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Sweden. The Meteor is powered by a unique rocket-ramjet motor that gives it far more engine power for much longer than any other missile, said an official. Besides the missile systems, the Rafale jets will come with various India-specific modifications, including Israeli helmet-mounted displays, radar warning receivers, low-band jammers, 10-hour flight data recording, infra-red search and tracking systems, among others. The IAF has already completed preparations, including readying required infrastructure and training pilots, to welcome the fighter aircraft. The second squadron of Rafale will be stationed at Hasimara base in West Bengal. The IAF spent around Rs 400 crore to develop the required infrastructure like shelters, hangars and maintenance facilities at the two bases. Out of the 36 Rafale jets, 30 will be fighter jets and six will be trainers. The trainer jets will be twin-seater and they will have almost all the features of the fighter jets.

India informs France of its decision to acquire 26 Rafale Marine jets
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/11/2023 - 09:00 in Military
India formally communicated to France its decision to acquire 26 naval variants of the Rafale fighter for the Indian Navy, starting the acquisition process under an intergovernmental structure, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.
In July, the Ministry of Defense approved the purchase of Rafale Marine jets from France, mainly for deployment on board the locally built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
The issue of the acquisition of the Rafale Marine jets figured during the recent visit of the Minister of Defense, Rajnath Singh, to Paris.
India sent a letter of requisition to the French government, formally communicating its decision to acquire Dassault Aviation jets under the government-to-government structure.
Negotiations on prices and other details are expected to take place after the Ministry of Defense receives a response from the French side, people familiar with the matter said.
Tumblr media
Earlier this month, the president and CEO of Dassault Aviation, Eric Trappier, visited New Delhi and discussed various aspects of the proposed acquisition by India.
The Ministry of Defense said in July that the acquisition of the jets along with associated auxiliary equipment, including weapons systems and spare parts, would be based on an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) and that the price and other terms of purchase will be negotiated with the French government after taking into account all relevant aspects.
The Indian Air Force bought 36 aircraft in flight conditions. There is an opinion in the IAF that it should opt for at least two more Rafale jet squadrons.
Defense and strategic ties between India and France have increased in recent years.
In July, India and France announced a series of innovative defense cooperation projects, including the joint development of jet engines and helicopters and the construction of three Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy.
The two strategic partners also expressed a commitment to cooperate in the co-development and co-production of advanced defense technologies, including for the benefit of third countries.

UCAV Programs Around the World & their Development in India.
Drones - both, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV) – have become part-and-parcel of 21st century warfare. They provide the user with an incredible amount of firepower and battlefield information without endangering human lives. Over the years, most military powers have created a space for drones in offensive airstrike, ground support and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) roles. However, the novelty of the Predator and Global Hawk programmes have in many ways worn off, and the next level of drone-human interoperability comes in active function, i.e. developing units made up of both piloted and unmanned platforms. These new prototypes are attempting to incorporate 4th Gen. fighter aircraft technology with existing network-information systems in order to minimise the risks posed to human pilots, while simultaneously enhancing overall air superiority.
Tumblr media
Current Developments
There are a variety of programs taking place around the world that are dedicated to developing such interoperable air units – the Boeing X-45 in the US and the Dassault nEUROn in Europe (developed by a consortium of France, Italy, Switzerland etc.)  being the most famous. Russia too is in the running, with its Sukhoi Okhtonik-B (or, Su-70) program which had its maiden flight last year; many speculate its design is derived from ongoing western prototypes pioneered by Boeing, General Dynamics and the like. Even China is reported to have developed a similar concept – the Gongji-11 (or, “Sharp Sword”).
Many of these programs date back to the early 2000s when the aviation industry was developing testbeds for low-observable platforms, whose technology and design would then be incorporated into the 5th Gen. fighter aircraft we know today – the F-35 and the Su-57 for example.
Uses of Interoperable UCAVs
In fact many of the specifications displayed by these UCAV prototypes – particularly their stealth qualities are directly appropriated from these fighter aircraft programs. The main aim of these projects is to develop a tighter informational loop that affords greater tactical advantages to the piloted vehicle, which is why along with the technical development of the UCAV, the industry is doing its best to improve the system interoperability between the drone and its designated partner aircraft; in the case of the nEUROn, it is the Rafale M, and as for the Su-70 it is reportedly Russia’s latest 5th Gen. aircraft, the Su-57 PAKFA. Along with a heightened level of interoperability for tactical advantages in the battlefield, the testbeds are also used to inform Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programs. However, the development of stealth UCAVs are also regarded as the future of aerial combat, resulting in the complete removal of piloted aircraft.
India’s Use of UAVs
India does operate a small number of UAVs, particularly in surveillance and reconnaissance roles; these are the Searcher Mark I and II, and the Heron purchased from the Israel Aerospace Industries’ Malat Division. Recent purchases of the Harop allow for a wider array of missions in electronic warfare and hunter-killer roles. Absent in this procurement is the development of high-tech, multirole UCAVs such as those outlined above. This is mainly because a vast majority of military missions in India are directed towards border security and counter-insurgency operations in the North and Northeast. However, India’s recent capacity building initiative in terms of air superiority and air defence, shows a rekindling of the type of conventional superiority required of a military power of its stature.
In that vein, India’s multiple defence public sector undertakings (DPSU), specifically the Defence Research and Development Organisations (DRDO), Defence Electronic Applications Laboratory (DEAL), Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Defence Avionics and Research Establishment (DARE) and Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) have been on course to develop indigenous UAVs and UCAVs; most notably the Nishant, Rustom and the mini-UAV, Suchan. The indigenous line of UAVs are to be used in ISR, targeting, weapon guidance, battle damage assessment, artillery fire correction, weather data collection, search-and-rescue missions and more.
Tumblr media
The DRDO Ghatak
More recently, India’s UAV development program has grown beyond mini-UAVs to High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) vehicles, and even projects similar to those such as the FCAS programs undertaken in the West. Of these, is the DRDO Ghatak, or in its departmental parlance the Autonomous Unmanned Research Aircraft (AURA).
Still in the testing phase, the stealth wing flying testbed (SWiFT), is the design definition being conducted at the aeronautical department of IIT Kanpur. With a fruition date set for 2032, the flying prototype is said to have the ability to maintain a low-radar cross section, drop laser-guided munitions, conduct electronic and signal intelligence missions etc. The program is also apparently based on the erstwhile Kaveri jet-engine program, and now runs parallel to India’s development of the Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA) – the next step after Tejas programme. With work still being defined in terms of design and aeronautics, IIT Kanpur had reportedly run a flight test using a 1:1 prototype fitted with a Russian NOP Saturn 36MT engine in early 2019.
Conclusion
While India still has ways to go before it operationalises and reaches the level of technological innovation of the West, Russia or even China, it is important to note that it is keeping an eye on global developments as it searches to build its own cutting edge air-superiority technology. Furthermore, recent acquisitions such as the Rafale, additional Su-30MKIs and the MQ-9B Guardian will give India the intermittent leg-up it needs; more interesting is the joint-development MOU signed by DRDO and the US’ Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to design air-launched drones. Hopefully, with complete squadron strength following the induction of the Tejas, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will be able to induct UCAVs that augment the country’s conventional superiority, both tactically and strategically. These developments will in many ways actualise the IAF’s change in posture from denial, to punishment.

Meteor is the next generation of BVR air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) designed to revolutionise air-to-air combat. The integration of the 120-150 km range missiles will take some time. * The Rafales will also be equipped with MICA weapon system which is integrated into IAF’s Mirage 2000 aircraft. * The jets will have a combat range of 780-km to 1,650-km depending on the mission. * They will have 13 ‘India-specific enhancements’ such as radar enhancements, Israeli helmet-mounted displays, low-band jammers, ‘cold start’ capability from high-altitude regions, 10-hour flight data recording, infrared search and tracking systems. * These enhancements will become fully operational after ‘software certification’. * French defence major Dassault Aviation, the company which manufactures Rafale, has since October 2019 handed over a total of nine aircraft to the IAF. In September 2016, the Indian government had placed an order of 36 Rafale jets with Dassault Aviation in a deal worth Rs 59,000 crore. * At least 12 Indian Air Force pilots have been trained in operating Rafale jets while several others are undergoing training. Maharashtra Elections 2019: "We Could Have Struck Balakot From India If We Had Rafale," Says Rajnath Singh
HIGHLIGHTS
He said fighter planes were meant for self-defence, not for aggression
On performing "Shastra Puja", he said, "Om depicts never-ending universe"
Congress had accused Mr Singh of "drama" over performing the puja
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said had India possessed Rafale fighter jets earlier the IAF would not have needed to enter Balakot in Pakistan to hit the terror camps.
Addressing a poll rally for BJP's Mira Bhayander nominee Narendra Mehta in Maharashtra's Thane district neighbouring Mumbai, Singh defended performing ''shastra puja" while taking delivery of the first Rafale jet in France recently.
"Had we possessed Rafale fighter jets we would not have required to enter Balakot and launch a strike. We could have struck at Balakot while sitting in India," he said.
Mr Singh reiterated that the fighter planes were meant only for self-defence and not for aggression.
On a controversy surrounding the "shastra puja", Mr Singh said, "I wrote ''Om'' on the plane, broke a coconut (as per tradition). Om depicts never-ending Universe".
"I acted as per my faith. Even other communities like the Christian, Muslim, Sikh etc worship with words like Amen, Omkar etc. Even when I was performing ''shastra puja'', people from communities like Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists were present at the event," he said.
At a ceremony in France on Tuesday, Mr Singh formally took the delivery of the first of the 36 long-awaited French-made aircraft acquired by the Indian Air Force. He also took a sortie in the two-seater jet.
The Congress has accused Mr Singh of "drama" over performing "shastra puja".
On his Rafale sortie, Singh said he had asked the flight captain to fly at supersonic speed.
"Only I and the captain, who was from Paris, were there inside the plane. I wanted to experience the supersonic speed," he said.
Linking the supersonic speed with governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Singh said, "Our government is progressing at supersonic speed while the Congress and the NCP are going down at supersonic speed".
In his speech, the BJP veteran accused the Congress of practicing "divide and rule" policy to pit one religion against another.
"But the BJP government does not want such feuds between communities and castes," he said, adding that no communal riots had taken place under the BJP rule since 2014 unlike the days when the Congress used to be in power.

Japan and France will conduct the first joint jet fighter exercise
The exercise continues a trend of expansion of Japan's security ties with the European powers, while France looks to the Indo-Pacific.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) announced on July 18 that Japan and France will hold their first joint fighter exercise in Japan next week.
This represents a historic milestone in the defense and security ties of the two nations amid China's military increase and regional assertiveness.
With the main fighter of the French Air and Space Force (FASF), the Rafale, flying to Japan for the first time later this month, its first joint air combat training will also demonstrate France's strong commitment to expanding deployments in the Indo-Pacific in an attempt to strengthen regional security.
Tumblr media
The exercise will be held from July 26 to 29 at Nyutabaru Air Base, in Miyazaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, as well as in the airspace of the Kanto region of eastern Japan, according to JASDF.
JASDF is participating with three F-15 and two F-2 fighters, a KC-767 in-flight refueling and a C-2 transport aircraft, while France is in the field with two Dassault Rafale fighters, an Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft and an Airbus A400M transport aircraft, along with a contingent of about 120 people.
Tumblr media
“We believe that the joint exercise will deepen the mutual understanding between Japan and France, promote France's involvement in the regions around Japan, and become a significant initiative for the realization of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu said at a regular press conference on July 18.
The chief of staff of JASDF and the chief of staff of the French Air Force will hold a joint press conference on July 27 at Nyutabaru Air Base, where the Rafale will arrive. In addition, on July 28, a joint France-Japan exhibition flight, including Rafale, is scheduled to take place at Iruma Air Base and the area around Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park in Saitama province, according to the French Embassy in Japan.
Tumblr media
The exercise is part of the Pegasus 2023 mission, a long-range transcontinental power projection exercise that the French military is conducting from June 25 to August 3.

France has long considered itself an important stakeholder in the security of the Indo-Pacific, due to its overseas territories in the region. It is the only European country with a permanent naval presence in this part of the world. More than 90% of France's exclusive economic zone is in the Indo-Pacific - including territories such as French Polynesia and New Caledonia - and about 1.6 million French people live in the region.
Tumblr media
Admiral Pierre Vandier, Chief of Staff of the French Navy, said in an interview in Tokyo in November 2022 that it is important for countries operating in the Indo-Pacific to maintain dialogue with China and that the deployments of the French Navy in the region - including those in the Taiwan Strait - are not intended for any specific country.
Tumblr media
“France values freedom of navigation, but we also do not want to provoke a specific country. I think the route we take [in the Taiwan Strait] will change every time,” taking into account both the United States and China, he said at the time.
This is in accordance with the philosophy of the Emmanuel Macron government in France. Macron refused to see the Indo-Pacific region divided into two blocks by the China-U.S. conflict; instead, France is seeking its own “third way” to ease tensions.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, JASDF also recently held its first joint exercises with the German and Indian air forces in Japan. The exercise with German forces took place in September 2022 and the exercise with India in January.
Japan apparently aims to strengthen defense ties with several countries, keeping in mind China's growing assertive military activities.
